Is there a way to change the default line width?

I've looked for this feature, but haven't really known *where* to look, so I thought it might be worthwhile to shoot a question to this list -- just in case it isn't there. The default line width is 1px, or .8 of a point. There are some drawings where I'd like to set the default line width to 2 points, or 1 point. As it stands, I've been changing the width manually after I draw it, which for complex drawings can be a pain. Is there a way to change the default line width overall and per session? If not, I'll add it to the bug tracker because that would be a really useful feature. Christopher B. Wright (wrightc@...537...)

I just read the disheartening news that Inkscape doesn't support multi-page documents. This would mean that one can not print a custom sized document that is larger then one sheet of standard size paper from Inkscape. Is this true? Can more than one sheet of paper be placed next to each other on the screen and can a drawing "flow" from one page to the next page (for example, 4 sheets of 8.5 x 11 inch paper, placed next to each other on the screen (zoomed way out), and a line drawn starting at page one, to page 2, page 3 and ending with page 4)? This way a drawing can be continous and then printed page by page and cut-&-taped together to form a large sized document (a lot of work but....) Any other suggestions? Printing Documents

Thank you for your help with Inkscape questions... I would like to introduce Inkscape to 4-5 students who love to draw. In order to help them, I have to have things worked out so that there are no problems. Kids love to show their work so I need to work out some printing problems. I want to print custom sized documents (24 to 40 inches long x 8.5 inches wide in either landscape or portriat) from Inkscape, using an HP Deskjet printer and banner paper, but I can not get a continuous print-out of the document. I have every setting that I can find in both the application and the printer set-up to print on continous, banner paper with no result (first page prints then everything comes to a stop). Does Inkscape have some sort of limit to printable size? I would image that there are a lot of you out there drawing and printing to custom sized paper some incredible drawings and other art work. Would you recommend not printing from Inkscape? If so, what are your suggestions and/or workarounds? svg to png problem

Hi, I have been using Adobe Illustrator for years, just found Inkscape and like it a lot! There is one problem that I could not find a solution for and maybe someone can help me with it: I imported bmp graphics from Gimp, put several together and added vector graphics in Inkscape. When I am exporting the graphics to png for input back into Gimp, I get thin grey lines at the borders of the originally imported bmp graphics. These lines don't show up on screen or when I print from Inkscape, but they are there in Gimp and MSPowerPoint. Any idea how I could avoid those lines? My workaround is to save the graphic as jpg in Gimp and then manually errase them, which is no fun. Thanks for any suggestions in advance, msb

I am very interested to know how other Inkscape users print their documents. What printer do you use to print custom sized drawing, etc.? Can you tell me what the majority of Inkscap users use Inkscape for? Inkscape for presentations... linking to svg files?

I've wanted to try making a presentation with inkscape for a while now, and in an attempt to avoid real work I started playing around with inkscape tonight to do just that. I'm curious what method/workflow other people have found that works for this sort of thing. One idea was to create a series of individual files for presentation; the problem then is that I frequently find myself wanting to have some consistent background text on each slide, and if I need to edit that background I don't want to have to open every single file. So i looked for a way of inserting a link to an external SVG file, with no avail; finally I just inserted a link to a PNG and modified the svg in emacs to point to an external SVG file. Imagine my surprise when it did exactly what I wanted! I now have a base template for generating slides where the bottom layer is by default 1. locked. 2. linked to an external SVG file. Unfortunately, it appears that inkscape is rasterizing the included file before displaying it. Is there any way around this? What methods have other people found to be effective for creating slides for presentations? Former AI Users - How do you save for the web?

I have a question for Inkscape users coming from Adobe Illustrator. How have you rebuilt your "Save For Web" workflow in Inkscape? Reading through the mailing lists I've come up with my own (incomplete) solution, and I'd like to see how I can improve it. I've only recently - since the 0.44 release - started using Inkscape (I was waiting for the layers pallet.) Once I got the hang of the export bitmap dialog box, I was pretty happy. Currently I have a layer on top of my full page mockup called "export" (which could just as easily be called "slices"). On that layer I have a set of unfilled, unstroked rectangles. Each rectangle has the id set to a unique name (header_bg, button_bg, etc.) and when I need to export a .png to be referenced by my .css file, I select the rectangle choose File->Export Bitmap, click the Selection tab, and export the selection out at 90 dpi. All is well. But sometimes - typically after I've had sign-off on a full page illustration, but before I've started my HTML mockup - I need to export all the selection rectangles at once, and I haven't really found a way in Inkscape to do this. From the mailing lists I know that there was an extension (SVGslice) that exported slices and html, but I'm having trouble running it on XP, and don't really need the .html anyway. In the future, as browser support improves, I'd also like to be able to export individual .svg objects that would be referenced by the .css or .html files. Again, the mailing lists have been helpful with suggestions on how to keep libraries of individual .svg resources and import them into one file (e.g. import character illustrations into a comic strip), but our workflow goes the other way. In our department we use AI, and now Inkscape, to design web application UI/UE. First we create a series of sketches, developing the UI elements in the context of the full page to the point where we have a tight, accurate illustration that gets final approval. Then we create a mockup with .html, .css and .png files that is developed into a series of prototypes until the final template files are delivered to the software engineers. Our sketches-illustrations-mockups-prototypes-templates thing works pretty well, but I feel like I'm pushing it when I try bring Inkscape into the workflow. Inkscape is great with a create-one-from-one workflow, but mine is really a create-many-from-one workflow. So I'm not sure if I'm asking the tool to do something (save multiple selections as bitmaps to a directory of my choosing, and warn me if I'm overwriting an existing file) that it was never intended to do. Just to cover my bases, I know that I could export out a bitmap of the full page illustration and then cut it up in The Gimp, or use ImageMagik, but that's one of the (many, many) reasons why I've soured on Adobe's tools in the first place. Having to launch big apps to do simple (To me, anyway. I'll understand if what I've described above is actually complicated to code.) tasks. So, thanks for reading this far. I'm just one data point, but I'll bet there are other disgruntled AI users who are looking at Inkscape that realizing, "Hey, I *can* use this in production!" Especially those of us who are really focused on eventually delivering .svg assets. So to those AI users: How have you rebuilt your "Save For Web" workflow in Inkscape?

Hi, I'm using the stable .44 on Windows XP and experiencing a (subjectively) strange behaviour. Summary ------- When working with straight lines (contour, no fill),I have to enter numerical values for height multiple times to end up with the wanted value. The values approach the wanted value for a few steps instead of "getting it right" the first time. Question -------- Is that a feature or a bug? Example ------- Created a vertical, straight line with the SHIFT-F6 tool (can't remember the the english name at the mo), height is 95,286px, width is 1px, but should be exactly 100px. 1st time entered: 99,950 2nd time entered: 99,999 3rd time entered: 100,000 Comments are appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi all, I'm very new to Inkscape and the possibilities that are made possible with a tools like this, so please forgive me if my question is obvious or otherwise stupid... But I have already searched for an answer to the following on the net and I cannot see how it is done. I would basically like to archive the same "fade out" on a new image as seen on the attached image. If you put this picture on a dark background, you can see that it kind-of shines. I have tried with the "Blur Egde" tool (as well as many other approaches, but none of these give me the same illusion. So... how do you get the same effect? Is it possible at all? -- /tonny

It renders the same for me (Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe) as it does in FoxFire from the web. You may be seeing a hardware problem. Thats a 2M file (map-save.svg) and when opened in Inkscape it caused my page file to increase by about 450M, also max's out CPU usage (2.5Ghz, 512RAM). imigital On Fri 8/25/2006 12:14 PM Carl R. I just got around to trying Inkscape today. I had downloaded it a few weeks ago, and one thing and another kept getting in my way of trying it out. But I am working on a Mac application and needed some "decent" icons, so today was the day. MAN! I'M BLOWN AWAY! I've used Illustrator at work in the past, and Inkscape, to my eye, does it ALL. Very, very nice app. It now sits in my doc right next to GimpShop. Keep up the excellent work. There are those of use who can't afford Adobe's offerings that appreciate what you're doing. I'm having difficulties getting inkscape to properly render some SVG files (using version 0.43 on a fedora core 3 system). An example file is here: http://edwards1.phy.ohiou.edu/~brune/map-save.svg inkscape map-save.svg -z -w 600 -e test.png does not render it properly (e.g. compared to batik). Also the image is not displayed properly if I open it with inkscape. Curiously, converting to eps works fine: inkscape map-save.svg -z -T -E test.eps I also find the same problem running on windows XP (installing Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe). Is this a bug? pdf export and images

hi, i'm using inkscape 0.44. I want to export a drawing containing imported png images to pdf. It contains transparency. with 0.43 it worked quite well except for the transparency. in 0.44 with windows the transparency worked. with linux not. and with both I encountered the problem that the images were not contained in the final pdf. Can't export to PNG.

Hey, Inkscapers, I have a new install of Inkscape 0.44 running on WinXP and I don't seem to have the export to PNG option. It's not in the File..Save As dialog. Ctrl+Shift+E/File->Export Bitmap does nothing. I guess a dialog is supposed to pop up here but all that happens is the screen flashes and the window loses focus. Any ideas? Thanks, ===Blake===

I would like to create something like the yellow-pink egg as shown in the easter egg tutorial (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1493939&group_id=9…), however, without black borders at the top and bottom of the yellow area. Another example for what I want to achieve is http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b4/Inkscapepiom1.png/… The wings of that insect have a darker area which touches the border of the wings (I don't want there to be a gap between the darker area and the border though) but does not have a border itself. I had a look at all tutorials I could find so far, but none of them gave me a hint. I hope that someone can enlighten me :) Regards, Florian

Font size change not working properly

Hi all, I open with Inkscape a SVG document created with another app. Most things look fine, but I would like to change the font size of text objects. After I select a few or all characters using the text tool, the Tool Control Font Size tells me the size is 15.023. Therefore choosing 18 in the pop-up menu should make the text slightly bigger. On the contrary, my text becomes tiny (totally unreadable). If I do the same thing, but using the Text and Font dialog, I enter 18 as the Font size, but when I click on Apply this is changed to "1.6199" and my text is tiny. On the other hand, if I select all the text using the Selection tool then switching to the text tool, the size change works fine, both through the Tool Control and through the Text and Font dialog. I've made a poster of 5000 x 8000 pixels (the canvas in document preferences). I would to print it as is, without losing one single pixel of resolution of the images I've stitched into the poster. I would appreciate some clarifications: - How is one to print the poster now at maximum quality? - Can I choose to export to eps? I did that two weeks ago in an ubuntu-dapper machine, but now in this kubuntu-dapper laptop I can't see how to export to eps from the Inkscape's menus. - How can one control the quality of the saved .png when exporting a bitmap? How does the '90' DPI default resolution in inkscape preferences relate to this? Thanks for any insights. Albert

Graded fills in EPS figures

Hi I understand that, in order to be able to render graded objects correctly when used as EPS files (e.g., in LaTex, GsView etc.), I have to remove transparency and use two different colours for the grading. How do I do this? Also, why does an EPS figure created by Adobe Illustrator not have this problem? I'm using Inkscape 0.44. Thanks. Remove unecessary nodes from path

Hello, "Simplify path" has the disadvamtage that it cuts so many nodes away that the new path looks different. Is it possible to get a second version of that command which tries to remove as many nodes as possible without changing the shape? Tracing comics

Hello, I have an image with relatively few colors (32) but only about eight of them are really used. It's a comic-style drawing, so there are many, large color areas. The rest of the colors is used to antialias between these 8 colors. When I try to trace this image with multi-scan/color, I get paths with a large number of nodes (roughly 6000 per color). These cannot be reduced because the colors immediately start to leak. One of the problems is a red blob at the bottom of the image. Without stacking, the result is not very good. With stacking, I get an insane red path behind all the rest of the image! Therefore, I'd like to discuss these optimizations: 1. First find out which color is used how often. Then for tracing, sort the colors from least to most used. This way, seldom used colors will only need small paths. Even better, if colors don't overlap (just do a simple bounding box check), handle them as one layer. 2. First, create one path which contains all the black parts of the image. Then, while looking for other colors, ignore the black pixels. Instead, while searching, simply go on as if the black pixel had the same color as the non-black pixel you just came from. Only remember the position of the last non-black pixel. When you hit the next non-black pixel, compare it with the last one. If they are equal, connect the two (as if there was no black between). If they are not, use the stored position as the border. Finally, after all colors have been traces, overlay the group with the black trace. This should give much better results for comics because the black lines cut the other colors into very many small areas. Maybe the "foreground" color should be configurable to allow to do the same with images which use white lines, etc. Regards, -- Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla a.k.a. Greetings, I have a HPphotosmart 1315 printer with XP. I only get the 115 meg print file no matter what way I save it.... Is there a patch yet or a work around.... this is a great program, but this large print spool bug is stopping this in it's tracks for me. [Q] Inklscape on WinXP with Wacom Intuos 3 - slow!

Hi, I have a Wacom Intuos 3 Graphic Tablet, and I'm trying to use this with Inkscape on WindowsXp. And it is slow!I Movement of the cursor, without even moving anything, lags behind about 1 second. I noticed that I have the same problems with .43 and .44, and I'm sure it worked before on .43. I have once done an update of the wacom driver, but I'm not sure when my problems started related to the update time. Sadly I haven't used inkscape quite some time (it woas so painfully slow ;-) . BTW, my current driver version is 4.96-7. Does anyone know about these problem. And, preferably, what to do about it? Thinks, Ingo

Printing to different paper sizes (Win32, Inkscape .44)

Hiho, what is the best way to print a drawing to different paper sizes (A4, A1)? Say one has a drawing that was made for page size A4 (using the borders that inkscape draws when setting that pagesize in the document settings), and wants to print it on A1/A0 (or a .ps file with that size). Simply selecting a larger paper on the printer options doesn't work as expected - inkscape will not use the whole paper, but only a part of it that has the size A4. I could resize the whole drawing to match the new paper size, but re-doing so for every new print (or whenever the papersize changes) is a bit annoying, and sometimes inkscape messes it up. So is there some print-option that allows to "resize drawing to match paper size" or similiar? The question already came up some months ago on this list, but it seemed like noone knew a solution. inkscape and version control/document management

Anyone using Inkscape with CVS or any other version control or document (CVS/Subversion) management system (WebDAV) on a regular basis? To rephrase I am wondering if anyone is checking their SVG documents into a version control system (VCS) of some kind? The reason I ask is I have noticed a trend of requests asking for various advanced Save and Undo features. The task seems like it would be better served by using a document manage system of some kind, and I suspect it may there may be users doing something similar already. I know Adobe includes WebDAV support to provide some basic document management. I also vaguely recall Gnome VFS can be built to include support for various file systems including ones like WebDAV but I do not know if anyone is secrectly using Inkscape with Gnome VFS and WebDAV enabled. I am hoping that if people are already using document management systems or more complicated options such as checking all their files into CVS then we might be able to discuss it here. Afterwards summarising it in the Wiki might help users make the most of the features Inkscape already has rather than attempting more awkward approaches involving undo histories or autosave features. NEW: interruptible display for better interactivity

Just committed: * Interruptible display: Previously, Inkscape could not do anything until it finishes the current screen redraw. Now the redraw is made interruptible, so that Inkscape responds to mouse and keyboard input and can abort the current redraw and start over if you do some screen-changing operation. As a result, Inkscape now feels much snappier and more interactive. So, while redraw is not really any faster now, it _feels_ much faster, especially for things like zooming, scrolling, etc. Enjoy. I fixed a couple bugs that were exposed by this change, but there may be more. In particular I suspect there might be a crash when you quit Inkscape while it's redrawing. I got this crash a couple times but it's very hard to nail it down. If you can cause it reproducibly please let me know. Other than that, it's working perfectly for me in the last few days. Special characters and other issues

Greetings! I'm extensively using Inkscape - Windows version 0.44 by arranging scanned sections map back together. I find the program much better than MS Visio Professional 2003 that I was using before. It a faster screen rendering than Visio using the same hardware. Thank you for making Inkscape! I hope that with this comment I could help make Inkscape much better. I notice the following quirks that I hope anybody can answer: 1. Whenever I resize the bitmap figure (the scanned section of a map I am trying to recreate), while pressing the Ctrl<key> and moving the corner section of the figure to resize it properly, it keeps going in all directions making an imperfect resizing. Any thoughts on why this is happening and the fix for this? By the way, the figures are all in jpg format and normally about 1 MB or less. There are times that the inkscape svg file I am assembling can have about 21 figures, meaning a total of 21 MB. 2. When using the text tool, I would like to add special character such as "ñ" using the Alt <key> -164, it won't show the said character. Why could this be and how can I go about it? "Fit page to selection", maintaining grid?

Hello! Is it possible to have the new "Fit Page To Selection" feature maintain the relative grid placement of the objects? I use inkscape exclusively for technical illustration and proper grid placement is really important for my diagrams. At the moment (0.44) the grid seems to be anchored in the lower-left-hand corner of the page, and "fit page to selection" appears to move the bounding box of the selected items such that the bounding-box lower right corner is coincident with the page lower-right-corner, and then crop the excess page. If there's some simple way of getting around this, I'd love to hear it. I've now made over 300 diagrams in inkscape, and it's just been a wonderful experience. Thanks! ...Eric

Display problems in Firefox and conversion problems in Acrobat

Hi, I've some problems with a inkscape graphics. I've running 0.44 on winXP. Inkscape displays the graphic as I want. Firefox crashes on the svg completely ("The memory could not be read"). I've also exported that graphic as pdf but but Acrobat reader 7.0 crashes as well ( a number value is out of range). inkscape .44 paths problems

+ several new features in the Inkscape .44 seem not to be working for me ? The two I was experimenting with were in the new paths submenu... ...one of these "flatten bezier"... the other one was "add nodes"... both of these seem to be asking for an object converted to a path. So, I used Object to Path for a bezier curve, and a straight line... now, supposedly, I have two paths to work with... but I cannot flatten the bezier... and cannot add nodes to the straight line... not by clicking on them... not by selecting them, and clicking the function... after a while, I gave up :-) How does one work with these new functions ? Possibly, they are just on the menu, but not working yet ?
