Bug in layers

Hello, There is a bug in the layers code when loading an SVG document with a single group (g element) and adding layers to it. In this case, Inkscape will sometimes show "Root" as a layer and when I move objects between the layers, they get sometimes lost. I even had the effect that I moved six elements and afterwards, three were in the layer and three were gone. A couple of undos usually get the objects back. I'd propose that you create a new artificial layer when a document has none and the user adds one (ie. after adding the first layer, the user will have two layers). Alternatively, move all objects into the first created layer. Or, even better, realize layers with classes. Since an object can be in several classes (you have to separate the class names with blanks, I think), objects could be in several layers at once. Regards, -- Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla a.k.a. Box around text when exported as EPS

I'm trying to convert a bitmap of a logo to vector. Trace did a pretty good job, but some of the font serifs weren't quite right so I kept the rest of the image and then recreated the text using the text facility in Inkscape. It all looks fine, but when I export to EPS and then place that into pagemaker, etc. I'm left with a box around the text I created. If I take the SVG file and open it in Illustrator it's fine. If I save as EPS in Illustrator, it's fine. Is this a bug in the EPS export facility in Inkscape or am I doing something wrong? Bending text box

Noob question about shapes

Hi, After only just discovering Inkscape, I'm just practicing drawing simple, cartoon animals. One thing I'd like to do, but cannot figure out is how to draw an egg shape. The elipse is easy, but how do I narrow the top to make it look more like an actual egg? inkscape and unicode font not working

Hi, I'm trying to use inkscape to open a svg file generated by lilypond but I'm having some problems: inkscape shows boxes instead of music notes. I do have the corrected fonts installed (have tried them with other programs). I could narrow the problem down to this: 1. put the emmentaler fonts in ~/.fonts 2. run fc-cache 3. open inkscape, select the emmentaler font from the text tool 4. type ctrl-u e125, that should give me a notehead glyph but I get a non-printable character message instead this url has the otf font and a "print out" with the font glyphs (from fontforge, useful to know the unicode code) in case someone feels like taking a look: http://www.pedrokroeger.net/inkscape/ I thought the problem was related to some library, but firefox can render this beautifully using the emmentaler font: <html>  </html> I'm using inkscape 0.43, fontforge 20060125, and pango 1.10.2. inkscape-users, New to inkscape. Read through most of the docs and searched quite a bit before posting. How do I integrate open clip art and inkscape? OR how does inkscape make use of hte XML that comes with open clip art? NEWBIE: drawing maps ?

Please, I am considering the use of Inkscape to draw simple maps. The main problem I see so far is the indication of roads. To do this I need to draw sets of two parallel curves a small distance apart. For rivers I need the same feature, but I need to colour the region between the lines. I also need to create my own objects that I can place anywhere on the map: bridges, canal locks, compass points etc. But I get the impression this is quite easy. How can I go about this ? Hello all, I'm a new inkscape user with what may be a dumb question, but I haven't yet found an answer through web searches or the mailing list archives. What I want to do is add a gradient to an object which is neither a single linear or elliptical gradient. (In particular, I'm trying to achieve faux-3D bubble effects for web graphics.) I can imagine two likely ways to do it: 1 - Apply multiple linear gradients to the same object and manually adjust their axes to achieve the desired effect. 2 - Apply a gradient that is defined by the orthogonal distance from the edge of an object rather than the distance from some fixed point. But, I can't seem to find any way of doing either in inkscape. Am I missing something? Does such functionality simply not exist (yet)? In case it's useful to the next person searching for help on this, here's my workaround: For object that can be decomposed into a small number of linear sides and involved a flat foreground and background color, I've been mimicking option #2 above as follows. I create an object with solid fill and then overlay it with thin rectangles aligned along each edge. Each rectangle is then given a gradient from background color to transparent. It works well for something simple (like a rectangle), but becomes prohibitively complicated for complex objects. Finally, I want to offer thanks to the developers. I'm very impressed by Inkscape. Haven't come across another piece of software that so perfectly strikes a balance between an intuitive, natural interface and access to a rich feature set. (It more than makes up for the list of pesky gnome libs I had to install in order to get the thing up and running.) Nicely done! - Erik

Problems with configure

OS:linux FLAVOR: Mandriva 2005LE In attempting to install InkScape I ran into the problem that configure cannot see libgc: checking gc.h usability... yes checking gc.h presence... yes checking for gc.h... yes checking for GC_init in -lgc... yes checking libgc version 6.4+... no configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc Initially I did not have libgc install but did install it and added the line /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf as suggested by gc instructions. I even went so far as to reboot the system--- to no avail. BTW: gc6.5 was installed. Cannot print to letter size paper

I am trying Inkscape and so far so good except for one thing, I cannot print to letter size paper. This is 0.42.2 in Suse 10.0. Printer is Laserjet 2300 (postscript) on USB. Set the media size to letter in yast, and then in KDE control panel to letter. Also set the print to PDF and Print to postscript to letter. Gnome configuration does not have anything that I could find for printing configuration, however, evolution and other gnome apps print fine. Why does not Inkscape have a printer configuration if it does not use the default cups config? Not much on the wiki about it either. Would sure like to use Inkscape, but unless I can print to letter size, it will be useless. Art

Hi Thank you for reading my post , and I'm sorry if this place is not suitable place for this question I have a long list of all pixels in a bitmap for example , i have all X,Y of all pixels and now i want to draw the bitmap using those X,Y s Problem is that i send all this points to a Robotic like machine , and machine will use this points to draw the bitmap (by using sequential hits) on a metal surface. as you know in such machine we should minimize head (mechanical tool that hit the surface to make the bitmap) movement to achieve better overall performance . Now i should find an algorithm or method to sort those X,Y points in a way that head movement become minimum. is there such algorithm around ? Please if i post in wrong forum , let me know right place for this kind of questions Thank you.

"Crayon" color picker

This may be semi-off-topic, but if anyone has an answer for me, it may be the diverse group that uses Inkscape. My primary OS is Mac OS X, although I spend a lot of time in Linux and Windows. One feature in OS X that I just love for some reason is the "crayon" color picker. Does anyone know of anything similar to this that is available for Linux and/or Windows?

Dumb Inkscape questions...

Hello all. A couple of dumb questions (or maybe one two-part question). How do I change the default fill and stroke colors? In other words, right now if I use the "star" tool, the fill color is yellow. How do I change that. Same question on the strok color. I know the answer is probably very simple. I just can't find it. clipboard not working?

Hello again, it's me with yet another issue with Inkscape 0.43, this time the clipboard. I don't seem to be able to copy elements from one window to another. I do remember, however that this was possible to do with Inkscape 0.42 and 0.41; on 0.43, however I'm unable. Whenever I copy a group, shape or anythin of the sort to the clipboard, change the window and try to paste it, I get a message that the clipboard is empty. I assume that each window has, then its own clipboard, as I can paste stuff copied from a window within that same window; either that, or two different Inkscape will spawn two copies of the program and thus two clipboards. I still have to see how does opening a new .svg from the "Open" dialog within the application reacts instead of launching Inkscape from the MIME association in the filemanager (GNOME and Nautilus in my case)... Little, tiny update: Indeed. Apparently when opening an .svg from the filemanager other than the one you are alrady working with, it will spawn a new copy of Inkscape, and thus a new clipboard, where as when opening another .svg from within Inkscape, the two windows will share the same clipboard... Still, I don't remember this behavior with 0.42 and 0.41. I know I have already answered my original question, but still, why is this the case? And (I know there's going to be people who won't agree with me on this) this is actually a great thing! As you can work on several projects at the same time several files each with several instances of the program opened, and they will not interfere with each other. Excellent!

gradients in objects

Why do gradients seem to be a separate entity from a shape? I'm currently trying to draw a shape and have its color as a gradient, using the fill tool. However, when I move the shape around to where I need it to be placed, it would seem as if the gradient is a separate object, as the shape "decolorates" as I move it about the canvas. How can I make the gradient "stick" to the shape? Is it even possible? Thank you.

problems with dual displays

Help someone please. I've been using inkscape on a laptop with dual monitor output. My main window is on the default desktop, and all option etc. windows are on the extended desktop (windows xp). I'm now working at home and don't have a second monitor. Unfortunately I forgot to move the "document properties" dialog back onto the default monitor before shutting down inkscape. So now when I try and open up the dialog it doesn't appear. Where are the settings saved for these dialog boxes so I can "edit" it back onto the default monitor? There doesn' t appear to be an "open dialogs on default monitor" option. Many thanks Mark

I read the SVG spec and i find that SVG itself has all shapes that i need as basic elements. so my first requirement is satisfied with any OSS Graphical SVG editor. 2-second feature is , CAD like capabilities , there should be some kind of ruler , Grid to guide the users about what they are drawing and a precision about 1/10 mm . 3-one thing that is very important is , software should be able to return all points in the drawing pane , for more explanation : imagine that i draw a line on the GUI interface (in drawing pane) , now i should be able to retrieve all of its points , or at least all important points (Start and END). by all points i mean the pixels or logical points that are arranged side by side to produce the shape. for example a circle could be produced by an 80 side polygon , i should be able to retrieve each side (which is a line) start and end coordination. 4-This requirement is something that made me crazy right now -i developed an application with Delphi but i stopped with texts there is no way that i can find al points that produce some parts of a character in Delphi and graphical pane that i used for drawing- The software that I'm going to start and complete in *Java/C++/.... *based on one of the available OSS editor should be able to give me important points or all drawing points of texts that are reside on its visual editor. for example , you imagine that some one need to mark an HLM on one of its metal surface , he/she come to my software and write that characters on graphical editor pane , s/he change is font... and then press the Mark button , Now i should be able to retrieve all points that created H (or all important points that one can create H using them and some simple drawing algorithms) and send them to Serial port and from there to mechanical sections of machine. right now all section of machine are complete , my Delphi software can communicate with it (I simply can arrange a java or C++ software to communicate with my hardware controller) Now my question for help is more clear , so i would welcome any comment / help / advice on this topic I should say that , i find some suitable DXF library in Java which i can use to import DXF files into my java application , I know XML processing so processing SVG files would not be so hard for me to learn.

I'm trying to compose a small comic, and I'd like to create the panels and layout in Inkscape. Is there any way to take an arbitrary closed path (not necessarily a square) and use a raster image to fill it? The closest thing I could find was to import all the raster images, convert them to patterns, fill the shapes using those patterns, then rescale the shapes while toggling on/off the "Transform shape along with object" button until the patterns fit correctly. This whole process is extremely awkward and time consuming, and it would really be convenient to just fill a shape using an image, without first having to import/pattern/transform an image. Is there an easier way? Thanks, Chris

Inkscape PDF output

Hi, I have a question about PDF output. When you look at the screenshot http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/8774/bildschirmfoto40ji.png you can see the inkscape window on the left side and on the right side the corresponding pdf. I created the pdf with inkscape 0.43 on Debian linux with the "Save as pdf" command. As you can see it's not very nice. When I "Save as ps" without converting text to path, I can import the ps into scribus and create a pdf from there. Then at least the text is antialiased, but the rest of the drawing still looks ugly. My question: Is there currently any way to create antialiased graphics / text in the pdf? Is there any software that does nice svg-->pdf conversion? Linux or windows, I don't care, I just need a good result. For now I have found a workaround: I export as hi-res png then I can use imagemagick to convert to pdf, but I would prefer a solution which does destroy the vector information of the original file. how do i clear the settings for a shape

I have added a star shape to my drawing and changed the number of nodes, size and rotation, to a point where it no longer looks like a star. Now when ever I add a new star shape to my drawing, it remembers my previous edits. How do i clear this sticky setting and revert back to the default shape thanks sanubolu

Default line width

Is there any way to set a default line width? Inkscape seems to always wants to use zero width, which isn't very useful, especially for line and bezier drawing! It also doesn't seem to remember the width from one line to the next. Is this intended, or a bug? Using v 0.43 on Mdk 10.1 -- No Sig
