printing problems in 0.43

Hi all, I have problems with printing since 0.41. I set page A4, draw graphics and print. But all is moved by half of a page up on paper. I've made it by Print direct.. "| lp" before, but this function disappeared. Running on gentoo64, cups-1.1.23-r4. All other apps are printing well. Any ideas? Mac OSX 10.4.3 issue

Hello, I had recommended Inkscape to a friend who, it turns out, uses Mac OSX 10.4.3 and he had trouble. I thought I'd pass along his response (see below) just in case it's helpful to the developers and just in case someone can pass along a fix. PDF bounding box on Linux

When I SAVE AS pdf a drawing with a custom page size, the PDF always looks like it's on A4 paper---even when the drawing is a fraction of that size. Is there a way to get a proper bounding box on the drawing? I've found that the only thing that works is to save as EPS, then use eps2pdf to convert the drawing. It works, but it rasterizes the drawing in evince and looks like crap. There has been a lot of traffic on the mailing list about PDF, from which I've gleaned that there are problems with PDF, but I wasn't able to nail down exactly what works today on what platforms, and how best to convert an Inkscape drawing to PDF today. System font size on windows

Can anyone out there help please? I've just upgraded from .42.2 to .43 and now all the menu and status bar fonts are too small to read. I'm running on Windows XP. I can't find any settings in the program to change. I've read the posting about changing gtk-font-name="verdana" etc. Although this just change some displays, it doesn't change the top menu line, or the status line at the bottom of the window. Version 42.2 was displaying at a size that was quite readable. Help. Thanks Mark.

I wouldn't have minded using Linux, but I still don't have mine talking to my favorite printer. I did find this utility that got the job done: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=141842 It has about the nicest UI for this type of thing I've seen with plenty of control over the paper orientation and overlap. If they ever do integrate such a feature for native svg files, I'd like to see something like this. Unfortunately it requires the use of an intermediate bit mapped file (PNG is ok). By default Inkscape exports bitmaps at 90 dpi. You will probably want to increase that (from the Misc tab on Inkscape Preferences dialog) to something closer to your printer resolution, but the file sizes grow quite fast. Output goes to a PDF file. I hope someone finds this useful. Bob M

Is it possible to print canvases that are larger than the printer's paper? I have several drawing on "tabloid" sized canvases that I would like to print on two (or more with some overlap) pieces of US letter sized paper. This is also known as print tiling and I even found an RFE on it: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=967795&group_id=9… Unfortunately it doesn't look like any action has been taken. Hi, Sorry don't mean to nag if this has been discussed before, but why are people allowed to attach files on this mailinglist? Why can't they just link to the files like on other lists? For example I only have 30MB space, it fills up pretty quickly with 680KB-lists (and atleast my client shows the attachments like text, having it as a link would save time checking it out too). Connectors and grouped objects, etc.

Dear All, I'm continuing in my attempts to draw block diagrams using Inkscape's new features, and I've just encountered some odd behaviour with connectors and grouped objects. I have a rectangle with a text element on top of it. I want to draw arrows between these blocks using connectors. There are a couple of ways that I can do it: I can group the text with the rectangle, and use the center of the group as the anchor for the connector, or I can leave them ungrouped and use the center of the rectangle. If I use the center of the group the problem is that the connector becomes detached if I ever ungroup it. Ungrouping is not unusual; although I can edit the text without ungrouping, I need to ungroup in order to reposition the text within the rectangle. If I use the center of the rectangle for the anchor, the connector seems to become disconnected if I group the rectangle and the text. There are also problems with connectors and snap. It looks as if an un-anchored connector end does not obey any snap rules, or the limited-direction feature that the line tool has when you hold down ctrl while dragging. Also, "Select All" followed by "Transform - Move" seems to not move the connectors. Are these known issues? Is this code evolving in CVS? Cheers, --Phil.

Trouble with 0.43 reading 0.40-saved works

Dear Mates, I'm having some very painful troubles with the brandnew 0.43 release. Namely, when I try to open SVG files that I saved with 0.40, font elements usually get shifted, and stars, circles, and squares get totally black, even if they were supposed to be yellow with red border colour. This is kinda problematic because I don't have 0.40 installed along with 0.43, but sometimes it'd be pretty handy to work with these antique resources. Now, it's possible that someone already asked this stuff earlier here, or it was an officially announced 'Known issue,' however I haven't found anything very certain so far. Should I reinstall 0.40 and leave advancement for the pros? Or can it be solved somehow with 0.43? Thank you in advance, Gabor Nyeki. --- No funny stuff here.

resetting clones

Hello everyone, just a quick question about ability to "reset" clone of an object. When I create clones on an object, I can manipulate them at my will (to some extent). Namely, I can stretch them, rotate them and so on... Is there a way to undo these transformations and reset the clones to the current "image" of the original? I realize that this sounds like a non-sense.. why did you modify the clones in the first place, right?! The answer is that I use Inkscape to annotate my plots generated by Matlab. Sometimes I replace Matlab's markers by mine: I create the marker and then clone it as needed. Now and then, it turns out despite my best efforts that it would be best to scale the whole plot.. maybe along the y-axis only... In this case the clones stretch, which is somethign I don't want. And since there are many clones (sometimes even thundreds) it is tedious to replace them again. Thank you for any insights!! Happy holidays! David

Using clones for boxes with text in block diagram

Dear All, I am about to start drawing some block diagrams and thought I ought to check out the new features that Inkscape has gained since I last did this sort of thing. For an example of what I have in mind, have a look at http://decimail.org/docs/overview.html. Basically it's just a collection of boxes with text in them joined with arrows. Obviously the new connectors feature will be useful, though I look forward to more flexibility about where the lines can join the boxes. I'm also considering using clones for the boxes. What I'm after is a way to be able to change things like colours and line thicknesses just once, and have those changes affect all of the boxes of that class. Is cloning the best way to do this? It seems to work, but there is one problem. Normally I put some text inside the box and then group the box and the text. But if I then clone the group the text cannot be editted in the clone. Maybe cloning isn't the right solution to this problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Many thanks, --Phil.

libstdc++ in autopackage build

Hi list, Autopackage build from 03.12.2005 depends on libstdc++.so.6. PLD Linux is known from having fresh packages, but I have only got so.5. Manual linking so.6 ends with errors and won't let inkscape start. [root@...1357... lib]# rpm -q libstdc++ libstdc++-3.3.6-3 [root@...1357... lib]# rpm -ql libstdc++ /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.5.0.7 /usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/libstdc++.mo /usr/share/locale/fr/LC_MESSAGES/libstdc++.mo Also there is always the warning (non fatal) about libpng problems. PDF support in Inkscape - users needed!

Hi all, If you're an Inkscape user who has run into issues with poor PDF capabilities in the past, we need YOU! Over the past year we've gotten *so* many reports about various troubles with PDF (and Postscript) support in Inkscape. For some people it just works, for others it works after a lot of fiddling, and for many it fails to meet expectations. We want to change this! :-) In fact, by this time next year, I think we could completely reverse the situation, to where Inkscape has the *best* PDF and Postscript export and import of all drawing tools out there. In the past, users have said they'd like to contribute to help make Inkscape better in one way or another, but often we've been able to meet those requests just for free. Unfortunately, PDF support has proven to not been one of those cases; it's not an area that generally attracts developers to work on it voluntarily. So what we'd like to try is to set things up so the community can contribute towards sponsoring this work. If we can get enough pledges, and a concensus on a plan of what to do, then we'll collect the funds and contract someone to perform the work. What we need *right now* though, is to know what the issues are that we need to solve. This is where you come in. Tell us what problems you've had with Inkscape PDF/PS or features you think are critical. Community support for creating PDF Export/Import feature

A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet Brandon Sanders when he visited OSDL about a conference he's organizing. He's also a long time Inkscape user and fan. Brandon's also involved in IBESI, an org that helps ordinary people create and run R&D projects. He's been looking for good guinea pigs. It struck me that this could be one way to meet our PDF export/import needs. It seems to fit Brandon's model very well. The community needs this feature badly, and users may be willing to fund development if there's a solid plan and concensus. Problem using Inkboard

With a friend we try to use the Inkboard. We both have a laptop with Ubuntu 5.10 and Inkscap autopackage with Inkboard. We use the gristle.org jabber server, we see each other via gaim. But when I try to invite him with inkboard, there is no invitation dialog on the other side. I See him connect or deconnect on the bottom of the Inkscape windows but cant share anything. Have you some positive experience with inkboard? Thanks (and sorry for my bad english)

Moving Objects and Gradient Anchors?

Hello, To start off. I love working in inkscape. It allows us Linux guys to compete in the Windows world. Great Job! I am trying to move an object in inscape that has multiple layers and gradients. Everytime I move the object the gradient anchors stay where they use to be screwing up my gradients for the object. Is there a way to get the gradient anchors to come with the object when I move it? Thanks

Howto make 3D and transparency

Dear readers, I was wondering, is it possible to make bar charts like this one? http://www.heko.dk/~maj/bars.gif So far have I only tried to make simple 2D drawings in Inkscape. So does anyone know, if it at all is possible to make 3D stuff and transparency like this in Inkscape? Lots of love, Louise

PDF Export/Import via Cairo

Hi all, I talked with Carl a bit more today about the PDF functionality with Cairo and what it'd take to use it with Inkscape. Here's some additional info. Carl, correct me if I've captured any of this wrong. Some clarification on libsvg, when Carl said he wasn't supporting it, I interpreted this to mean it needed another maintainer. He clarified this; the reasons he had forked libsvg from librsvg originally was to try out replacing its libart backend with a cairo backend. Now that librsvg uses cairo as it's back end, there's no reason for libsvg to be used, and in fact it lacks capabilities that are in librsvg. So... The plan going forward would be this. svg2pdf as it exists now is probably ok for a start; it's at least better than we got now, and fits within our existing system. I think it's mainly going to be a packaging issue to hook it into our extension framework. Beyond that, svg2png needs to be modified to use librsvg instead of libsvg. This is probably a fairly simple task, as svg2png is a really short bit of code. I told Carl about UberConverter. He wasn't sure if the design of Cairo's PDF functionality would match UberConverter's structure, so a crs2pdf via Cairo may not be the right approach. Carl also mentioned something called Poppler(?) which does PDF _import_, that works in conjunction with Cairo, and that would give us a good round-trip to and from PDF. This sounds worth checking out. Bryce
