gamma-correcting SVG files?

Hi all -- I'm new on this list. It's very impressive how Inkscape is coming along! I have a large set of SVG files (665 of them) that I've exported from Macintosh Adobe Illustrator and am now hoping to be able to work on exclusively in Inkscape. (Bye bye proprietary software!) As part of the process, I need to gamma-correct all these files, since the gamma correction on a Mac is different from the one used on Linux and Windows. In the past, I've done this by taking the EPS output from Illustrator and munging it using a kludgy perl script I wrote. (I convert the figures from EPS to PDF, and include them in a book done in pdftex.) I'd like to be able to do this to the SVG source files now, and solve the problem once and for all. Can anyone suggest an easy way to do this? Can this be done in Inkscape, and, if so, can the operation be scripted? Or is there some other utility that can do it? As a last resort, I could look into writing a less-kludgy Perl script using XML::LibXSLT or something, but I'm hoping for an easier way. TIA! On a related note, it occurs to me that if Inkscape has a test suite of SVG files, some subset of mine might be a useful addition to it --- if so, let me know. (They're technical illustrations from a physics textbook.) For example, when a new release of Inkscape comes out, it might be a good workout for it to see if it can read in a bunch of files, and render them as PNG without choking or producing an empty output file on any of the inputs.

Inkscape for Mac OS X

There is no other way than fink to install Inkscape under Mac OS X ? Because I will not install 100 Mo of packages and binaries requested by fink only to be able to use Inscape .... There is really no one binary somewhere ??

Large EPS filesizes

Hi, I am using 0.39 and have an inkspace-generated SVG that contains several images that I want to include in latex as EPS. When I indivually place each image in the page, change page size to match image size and print direct, I choose various resolutions such as 72DPI, 300DPI etc. The output filesize is the same no matter what DPI setting I choose. The issue is the size of the file, it is common for the file to be 7MB which results in the latex-generated postscript document being too large for me to email. Perhaps I am using the wrong procedure to generate an EPS, either way, I'd like to have smaller EPS images :) Kind regards, JoeBloe

Fonts and TextFlow

Hi I'm new to Inkscape so forgive me if these are silly questions. I'm looking into using Inkscape to make a sprite based webcomic, but I've got a problem with some of the fonts I want to use. I've installed some fonts from Blambot (you can try some from http://www.blambot.com/dialogue.html as samples), but while they work with other Windows apps (like OpenOffice) they don't appear in the list of available fonts in Inkscape - they're just not there. While I was looking through the screenshots I found one which showed text being confined to a shape (http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.40-CVS-linux-flow-01…) but I can't work out how to do it. Can it only be done through the XML editor? If so how, and will it ever be made available through the front end? I'm using Windows 2000 and one of the snapshot builds from http://cortijodelrio.net/, though the fonts didn't appear with 0.39 either. TTFN, Ed

auto-increment object id's?

hey, i use inkscape a lot - it is my primary svg editor - and i'm very impressed with it. but there's one thing that frustrates me, and that is the way it handles auto-id assignment. ideally i'd like to be able to select a group of objects, set the ID property of one, with a -1 at the end, and have the rest all be enumerated based on the first one.. is there any way to tell inkscape to use specific id's for objects, and auto-increment properly? i've dl'ed the code and had a look at the sd-object "sp_object_get_unique_id" function, but it doesn't look to me as if theres' an 'easy' way to get it to handle auto-increments properly without majorly restructuring things .. anyone got clues? -- ; Jay Vaughan

Actually, the "printer" is an online service that only accepts either CorelDRAW, Illustrator, or Freehand files, but I can at least ask them if they accept PDF as well (since Postscript or EPS doesn't support gradients, as someone wrote here on the list). Copying objects

Hi! How can I copy an object from one drawing file to the another one? For example: - I make draw1.svg, where one of the objects is a composite between a curve and a triangle, each with it own customization. - I start other project, draw2.svg, and I note that I need exactly the same curve and triangle. - I don't want to redraw them, I just want to copy from one to the another. pixel measurement

Hi all, Just a quick question. Previously when I worked in Illustrator or CorelDraw, I set the measurement to pixels, since most of the stuff I was doing was for the web. I noticed in Inkscape that the global preferences set some things with pixels, but you can't set the overall measurements to pixels. Is there a reason for this? I've been getting around it by designing in point measurements and then changing the DPI when I export to bitmap to get to the pixel size I want. At least the proportions work ok when I do this. calligraphy fun + new screenshots

Until yesterday, I considered Inkscape's calligraphy tool pretty useless. It was too weird and not really suited for any real work. It turns out I was wrong. The problem with this tool was that its most useful mode - flat nib - was disabled and there was no UI to enable it. As a result, the Angle control had no effect because the "pen" was actually more of a "brush". I fixed this, and even made the transition from flat to round a gradual one, controlled by the new Flatness control (0 = round nib, 1 = flat nib). (Actually 0 is not "round", but the pen is always rotated perpendicular to the stroke direction; any suggestions for a better term?) I also added a Thinning control which tells how much to change the width of the stroke depending on velocity (0 = uniform width, >0 makes faster strokes thinner, <1 makes faster strokes broader). I also changed the defaults of the rest of the parameters. With these changes, the tool is now capable to do some real calligraphy. Hello, I've just compiled 0.40pre1 and wanted to give some feedback: - Like 0.39, very large paths (4000 nodes) are very slow, especially during zoom and when I go into node-edit-mode (inkscape spends a lot of time drawing stuff that's off-screen). - While dragging with the middle mousebutton, inkscape should stop drawing when I move the mouse. That would prevent these nasty "hickups" when panning and allow to pan in models of any complexity. - Is there a way to leave the "cut object" (used in cut path) alive? - There should be a way to set the layer of an object; using "next layer" and "prev. layer" is ugly. - I'm editing a vectorized image (a scan of a map). Unfortunately, the "strokes" of the original image were converted to polygons by potrace. Is there an easy way to turn them into lines? - I'd like to have a way to split a path at a point (turning that point into two endpoints, leaving orientation, etc, alone). Can you add that, please? Ideally, the tool should use a crosshair which snaps to the closest path and whenever I click, it should cut the path. - How do I join the ends of two paths? - Is it possible to create a polygon by specifying a set of paths? The idea is that I have N paths which are the borders of an area (a land on a map). Now, I want to be able to create a polygon and the borders from the paths. The borders themselves should get special styles (border to the sea, to another land, province, etc) while all "borders" of an area joined should give the outline of the background. Even better: Two adjoining lands would share the same border. When I move a point of the border, I change the border and the two "land areas". Can I do that in inkscape? Embedded fonts in SVG files ?

Dear Inkscapers, I wonder how hard it would be to provide a feature to save the fonts along with the SVG documents, and even maybe use them in future usage of this document... Except for the delicacy of font-parsing, it tastes like something that would be useful to all! thanks paul PS: I seemed to notice that InkView didn't support embedded font, at least yet.

Glue : SVG Support ? Inkscape Sypport ?

Greetings My goal is to implement in Inkscape the equivalent behaviour of "glue" as found in Visio. In Visio this is exhibited by creating two "lines" and then dragging the end point of one line to coincide with the end point of the other. The behaviour of these "lines" are defined such that when a "coincidence" event occurs the end points are "glued", ie a transformation of one of the lines (e.g a translation) causes the end point of the other line to continue to coincide with the position of the other end point (i.e the end of one line "follows" the position of the other). It would be nice if, within Inkscape, I could specify such behaviour, but its absence would not be fatal because I have other means of specifying the content of the SVG that would be input to Inkscape. Firstly, are there any elements within the SVG specification that would naturally allow this behaviour to be defined?. Unfortunately I am not in a position to specify the glued coordinate as one that is part in a single polyline. I am constrained by a requirement that this behaviour be exhibited between two distinct geometric elements. I initially had in mind providing an identifier for one of the points in one polyline. I could then define a point in the other polyline as a reference to this identifier. But I dont think SVG's element and attribute structure allows this. Secondly, if the SVG specification supported such a semantic, would Inkscape reflect this in its behaviour. That is, if (to take one possible solution) one point were defined as a reference to the other, would Inkscape know to update all points that were defined by reference. Just a quick note that I added an initial layer to the default template. Now new documents will be created with "Layer 1" active. Also the hide/lock buttons now at last look correct (though they are not functional yet). This means that Inkscape's face is now fit for shooting. Please send here (or submit to patch tracker) your screenshots showing the nice things you are doing with Inkscape CVS. The more complex and beautiful is the stuff on your canvas, the better. Show something that not everyone can do! The best shots will be published on the site in time for the 0.40 release.

Duplicating à la Illustrator

Dear Inkscapers, As the tutorial says.... duplicating is one of the most common operations. In illustrator, I had the habit of doing the following which turned out to be quite useful: select something, then alt-drag it... it'll be duplicating. Actually several other places with a duplication "modes" exist. For example all transformations have a "copy" checkbox... That's particularly nifty when combined with Illustrator's "repeat last command". For example one can easily rotate by 45 degrees with copy, then request repeat-last-command 6 more times to get the objects spread around in all 8th of the circle... Making a horizontal sequence of strokes is another example. How does it sound ? paul

Hello, When starting Inkscape on WinXP I (always) get the message ** (indscape.exe:3984): WARNING **: Invalid UTF8 string passed to pango_layout_set_text() And a dialog pops up. I cannot read the end of that dialog since it is not resizeable but it starts with my 'My Files' ('Eigene Dateien' - in german) - Directory... best Steffen

cannot import raster-images

Hello list, At first: do i have to wirte my question in english? German would be better. When i export my .svg document from incscape to .png and watch my .png in other programs like e.g. gqview or others the background of my grapics is filled with grey and white squares. How can i tell incscape to export with white, or other colored background? Witch linux cad- program does incscape work together best? I Have also installed 'qcad' and 'xfig', and i am trying to draw living rooms from upside, and want to transform it in 3D view. It would be great, if i cold import a scanned image into the program, and work with it. best regards : Istvan

Fill Opacity

Playing with .40cvs from a couple of days ago. Brought in an SVG, from .39, with some rectangle gradiant fills and now they are partial opacity. Noticed in the XML editor that fillopacity was set for .75. Could only find the setting in the XML editor and changing to 1.0 fixed that object. Using potrace to produce SVG files for Inkscape

Some of my initial attempts at using potrace to produce electronic components in SVG format for use with Inkscape can be seen at the URL below. The embedded figures are in SVG format so you will need a browser with an SVG plugin or save the figures and open them in Inkscape. http://www.isu.mmu.ac.uk/~za9ra01/svgstuff/svg-libs.html I have another Inkscape SVG file containing a collection of various transistor symbols which I have not put up on the web yet. Has it only been ONE year? Yep, today, October 26, 2004 is Inkscape's first anniversary. This time last year we registered Inkscape with SourceForge and poured ourselves into converting it over to C++. Our first public announcement of the founding of the Inkscape project occurred a bit over a week later, on Nov 6th, to be followed closely by our first release to Freshmeat on Nov 10th. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3416220&forum_id=3970 It's been an amazing year with the project. We've had five very solid releases, each a major advancement over the previous. We've taken a project from scratch to being included standard in nearly every major Linux distro. Tens of thousands of people use Inkscape today! Most importantly, we've succeeded in building a very open and prolific development team, and have been fortunate in gaining a very supportive and friendly user community. For the year to come, I think we can look forward to gaining solutions to many of the features and issues we're worrying about right now like PDF, extensions, Gtkmm, etc. CSS will probably be a major effort, but one we'll gain a huge amount of benefit from. I think (hope) we'll see expansion of Inkscape's audience to include technical drawing in a big way. I'd like to put some effort into building up a healthy donation system since we already have users asking about that. I also hope we can continue to expand the size of the development team and the userbase. We should continue to encourage users to peek under the hood and fiddle with stuff; I'm hopeful the extensions system will also provide an easy way for users to get involved. We would also do well to expand our efforts at demoing and presenting Inkscape at trade shows and conferences. As far as I can tell, that's not an Inkscape error, but a GTK+ one. It seems to be that the file dialogs won't allow you to build filenames/paths that do not map into the current "filename" 8-bit encoding. If you have multilingual support (via Microsoft MUI or some such), you could try switching to a language that has those characters, then switching back and using the MRU list to access them. Also (and if you can't switch language), you could use some text editor that supports UTF-8 to edit your preferences.xml directly and stick that name into your MRU list. Hmmm... I wonder if it's time to use Inkscape to draw a little 'zone' diagram of the program and all the different points that could be affecting non-ASCII names? Hmmmm....

Hello, I searched a way to export my graphics as eps (to use them with latex) but couldn't find an option in inkscape. Is it possible at all? If not, does anyone know of a tool that converts svg to eps? (Or even a better, more comfortable way to include svg in latex?) regards Steffen

Call for bug check

Can anyone on Windows check the following bugs for me? 925033 win32: non-ascii filenames still don't work 934062 win32: international characters in home path 1052307 Saving fails because of UTF-8 Error In generall, the steps to check these are 1) run a version of Inkscape that is belived to have the bug 2) try to reproduce the bug 3) report if it was reproduceable or not 4) once the bug is being reproduced, update to a version of Inkscape that should have it fixed 5) try to reproduce the bug the same way as worked for step 2 6) report if it is still reproduceable. With that in mind, I mainly need to get people to verify the bug via steps 1 through 3. Getting them checked on Windows 95/98/ME and also on Windows NT/2K/XP is helpful, as they are very different bases. Thanks, Jon

Shape-tutorial

Hello, I've just stumpled over the new tutorial on shapes and played around with it. I've noticed that some features described in the tutorial won't work with me. Most of the CTRL+click and Shift+click things do not work, e.g. I also couldn't find the handles for resizing an ellipse. There are just the two handles for creating arcs. I am using Inkscape for windows. Must be a build from last week... Before I forget: The tutorial is great. I learned a lot. Inkscape is marvelous! :-) best regards Steffen

When I see the work done by Bulia for his tutorials, I much more see this document as an example (a kind of Inkscape in action) and it can't be compared to the complete and exaustive presentations of the fonctionnalities brought by Inkscape tutorials. -> I'll create an "Examples: Inkscape in action" page on the Wiki, and add this there. Guys from www.linuxgraphic.org have issued a lot of excellent tutorials/examples : I'll ask them permission to perform some other translations and then bring them on the same wiki page if they agree. two new tips from the tipsandtricks tutorial

I added two new tips to the tutorial. Feel free to send me your favorite Inkscape tips for inclusion - preferably something non-obvious, useful, and not documented elsewhere. Clipping or masking a bitmap By default, an imported bitmap (e.g. a photo) is an <image> element which is not editable by a Node tool. To work around this, convert the image into a rectangle with pattern fill by Alt+I ("Tile"). Now this object can be converted to path, node-edited, intersected with other shapes etc. In Preferences (Misc tab), you can set the option of always importing bitmaps as tiles. Open dialog as an object palette If you have a number of small SVG files whose contents you often reuse in other documents, you can conveniently use the Open dialog as a palette. Add the directory with your SVG sources into the bookmarks list so you can open it quickly. Then browse that directory looking at the previews. Once you found the file you need, simply drag it to the canvas and it will be imported into your current document.

Little suggestion for "sticky" bitmap exporting

Dear Inkscapers, Here's a first suggestion: a feature I would have wished since ages in Illustrator but... never had a chance to provide... When you export as bitmap a document from a design program, you often want to export it several times. I'd love Inkscape to have a checkbox in the export-as-bitmap dialog that says "and export every time I save". Another file-menu-command such as "export-again" would also help. And maybe "settings-set-for-export" may make sense (at least in some future). paul

selection cue

A long time ago, when Carl proposed the box selection cue (every selected object is enframed by a dashed box), I did not want to make this the default because I found it to be too intrusive. However, since then I grew to like this more than the default selection cue (every selected object has a diamond mark in the top left corner) and I find that I use the box selcue all the time. It's not so intrusive once you get used to it, and it gives a much better idea of the object extent and is nice for aligning things. Also, previously the selcue was only displayed in selector, where the scale/rotation handles make the selcue box a bit redundant; now however the selcue is displayed in most other tools that have no other handles around the selection. Hence a question: would you agree or disagree if I make bbox selcue the default? In case you don't know how to change it: Preferences > Tools > Selector, change "Per-object selection cue" from "Mark" (current default) to "Box".

difficulties with ill2svg

Hi List, I am discovering InkScape with great pleasure. It seems to have the confort of Illustrator, of which I've been a fan since version 3.2, but adopts more standards, and maybe even more interactivity! One project I'd like to try is to bring the library of plan-sketches of our furnitures from Illustrator to InkScape... But I am encountering at least the following two issues: - shapes that have "zero-stroke" (that it "printer-dot-thin" more or less) are filled with black - no text is imported I am on the impression that, most probably, I am using a wrong version of the Illustrator documents... but ill2svg says nothing about the supported versions... My attempt was on Illustrator 8 format (Mac line-endings) and Illustrator 5.5 format (Mac line-endings).... should I go as far as Illustrator 3 ? thanks paul
