Locked objects

Hi all I discovered today that you can edit a locked object - size, shape, position colour of fill and stroke, alpha value (but not position), copy ... maybe other things ... while keeping it locked. Just TAB to the object and do the adjustments. Maybe everyone knows this if so my apologies. Regards, Adam

Pango testing - help needed!

As you know, we recently switched our text system to a new library called Pango. Now that some of the worst bugs and regressions are fixed (definitely not all), and we need your help in testing it thoroughly. 1. Here are the confirmed Pango niceties so far (i.e. what is tested and works): - Text is much smoother. No more ugly autohinting gaps between letters in small sizes. Letters move smoothly when you change letterspacing by Alt+< and Alt+>. - Auto kerning pairs (from the font) now work. For example "AV" will now be kerned together automatically in most decent fonts. - On Windows, non-ASCII text works (tested with Cyrillic). Localized font face names (such as "italic" translated into a local language for Windows fonts such as Arial) are no longer a problem. 2. Here is what SHOULD work now but is not yet tested because we don't speak these languages. This is where we need your help: - Right-To-Left text (Hebrew, Arabic) and BIDI (bidirectional mixed text) seems to work but I'm not sure. - Contextual letterforms that depend on the position in a word and script-specific ligatures (Devanagari) should work. - Chinese and Japanese need testing, especially for how good vertical text works (it is enabled by a button in the Text and Font dialog). 3. And finally the things that don't work (yet): - Symbol fonts seem to have problems, at least the symbol.ttf from Windows. Any help or insights is appreciated. - Fuzzy font matching that worked in 0.38 is not reenabled yet. (No warnings on font substitutions, etc.) Only Italic and Bold faces within a family work so far. This is being worked on. So, grab the latest CVS and play with text as much as you can. We're interested to hear any reports, positive as well as negative. Hi everyone When compiling inkscape 0.38.1 in macosx I get this error: nr-type-directory.cpp: In function `bool ink_strstr(const char*, const char*)': nr-type-directory.cpp:302: `strcasestr' undeclared (first use this function) nr-type-directory.cpp:302: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in.) Exporting question

I am not a visual person. I am not a designer, not a drawer, not a painter, not a photographer. I'm a man of words, really, if I need to be creative, it's words. Having said that, can I sue you for the time I've lost playing with Inkscape? No? Goddamnit. It's wonderful. Intuitive. The 'everything should be keyboard accessible' philosophy rocks. It has everything. Yesterday I tried, to amuse myself, making a mockup panelling for a comic that I'm working on with a visual artist (you guessed it - I mostly do the words :P).. it's incredible how painful proper layout with CSS can be. As these things go, 'to amuse myself' turned into a holy crusade and I would not rest until I could churn out professional layout mockups by the dozen. So I got Inkscape. The next 2 hours were spent rotating and resizing stars and occasionally saying 'wow'. I shake my angry fist at you all. Now I don't ONLY write here to stroke all of your egos. I have a little problem. Actually I feel ashamed to ask, because I'm sure newbies have stumbled over this a hundred times, but I could find nothing in either the archives nor the Wiki, so I'll ask here and add it to the archives: When exporting my wonderful drawing, I get a certain problem: First couple of attempts, all was black in the png. Now, after making a somewhat more complex .svg, PART of it shows up in the export. Please refer to http://ubermutant.de/~bringa/page1.svg (16k). In this mockup, only the mocked magazine cover on the right hand side shows up in an export. (I needn't mention that you shouldn't look at the content.. this is a mock-up only :P). If anyone could clear this up for me, that'd be great. One could also have some sort of Usage-related FAQ in the Wiki, and this would be a good first item to start with, I think. Daniel

Hi all, I think that it could be a good idea to have a "pot of painting" tool. (I would say a tool to create a new object compared to the layouts which surrounds it) I think that the booleans operation should be able to apply on a group of object. And a really thanks to the Inkscape's team to make possible this great SVG editor (and sorry about my wrong english :-) ) A sensitive-all option About the "Gradient Editor", sometime, when I modifie a parameter, it's directly apply to my gradation, and sometime not... bezier tool settings

Hi all Is there any way to adjust Bezier curve helper points so that they remain aligned, i.e. they remain on a straigth line that runs over the central point? In this way, curves don't make sharp turns unless helper points are over the central point. If this is not implemented, I could help with it if someone could point me to the file. I have already done this in a java plugin for ImageJ. Albert

Sizing :)

Hello people :) I have made a logo of a project and now want to use it. But I want it to be 90x90 px and the borders to be a square. The logo now is very big and the size of the document is very big. Is there a way to automatically reduce the size to 90x90 or something near this and to place the object in the center vertically and horizontally.

This is my story on compiling and running Inkscape in macosx 10.2.8 with XDarwin and a gnome installation. Thank you to Colin in this mailing list for sharing his experience on similar compiling problems in Solaris. Albert ============= OS: macosx 10.2.8 Need a gnome installation. Now, ./inkscape in src folder works, but prints many critical problems. It all has to do with hard-wired links to /usr/local/share/... folders, non-existant when not installed. make install WORKS without printing errors. Good.

Menu font size

I was wondering how I can could the menu fonts in Inkspace; it displays display significantly larger than other GTK applications. I found that by modifying the gtkrc files in \Inkscape\etc\gtk-2.0\, I could get the size I wanted by replacing this line: # gtk-font-name="tahoma 12" with this one: gtk-font-name="verdana 6.5"

Inkscape is spectacular -- feature requests?

Hello! Inkscape is really spectacular, and may once and for all rid me of my chronic dependence on Illustrator. The 0.39 sources compiled on my debian box with minimal hassle, and I'm quite happily using clones right now. But what I'd really like : ) would be some way of storing the original source for a clone in a file. I use Illustrator / will use inkscrape almost exclusively to diagram the internal guts of digital systems, with lots of symbols for flip-flops and the like. Thus it would be great to have a system-wide "register.svg" file that I could use as a base for the clone objects. I'm somewhat familiar with SVG and XML, and realize that this might not be possible. Has anyone else wanted this sort of feature, and if so, has there been any thought as to how to implement it? I'd be willing to try and hack on it (I've got some gtkmm background) if I wouldn't be stepping on anyones' toes ,and someone could point me in the right direction. Last year I kluged together a C program that makes my school timetable in SVG for me out of a plain text definition. I kluged further to make it do generic tables to help my old one-banana job at Coles. This year I rewrote it from the ground up. terminology - help needed

There are going to be three "toolbars" in Inkscape: 1. Under the menu, horizontal, with buttons for common non-tool-specific operations such as Open, Save, etc. 2. Below 1, horizontal, with too-specific buttons and controls (exists now and is called "top panel" or "aux toolbar"). 3. Vertical at the left, with tool buttons. The question is: How to call them? They are all "toolbars" technically but using the word "toolbar" without distinction is going to be very confusing. Even using "toolbar" for 3 only is going to be confusing because people are used to calling "toolbars" any horizontal rows of buttons. So the names need to be unique but at the same time descriptive and short. Most importantly, they must stick. "Top panel" for 2 did not stick, somehow. Here is the best I could think of: 1. Commands bar 2. Tool controls bar 3. Easy testing of Inkscape builds on Linux with Autopackage

Hi Guys, One of the cool new features for this upcoming release is something called 'autopackage', which if it works, promises to make it very easy to install Inkscape on Linux, especially if you're using an RPM-based system. But to make sure this works we need folks to test it out. It's easy to do so. Docking

Hi all Using Gimp 2 on Windows XP, I "undocked" the tool options palette by mistake - how can I re-dock this? Note that on my (XP) display, there is no double line at the supposed docking position at the foot of the box (if you follow me!). I would send a screen shot but I think attachments are stripped by the list server? Adam

svg_annotate (and announcing SVG::Metadata 0.05)

Since adding metadata to your SVG files is cumbersome, especially when you have a lot of files, I've written a script 'svg_annotate' to perform this work. This script is now included within SVG::Metadata, and takes advantage of its data structure. You can download it from CPAN, here: http://search.cpan.org/~bryce/SVG-Metadata-0.05/ The README has instructions for installing it. Briefly: $ perl Makefile.PL $ make $ su # make install You will probably also need to install XML::Twig. You can also get this from CPAN and install it the same way as above: http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/M/MI/MIROD/XML-Twig-3.15.tar.gz Then, to use svg_annotate to add metadata to all files under directory 'my_art': $ svg_annotate -a "My Name" my_art/ This will add metadata to any files that don't already have it, including setting the license to Public Domain and the title to "My Name - <filename>". (You can override this if you want; see the manual page for svg_annotate on CPAN). Let me know if you run into issues. Bryce

Project Status Tuesday, June 15, 2004 The past two weeks have seen a great deal of progress on a number of important efforts, the most notable one, of course, is the Pango conversion. Several people have been hard at work researching, implementing, and testing this out, but the major thanks go to Fred for his patch that gets us much further along than we had expected for this release. Additionally, pattern fills were introduced, orphan collection was created to garbage collect leftover gradients/markers, and there was additional experimentation and changes to how inserted images are handled to make them more useful and usable. Mental has been working on C++-ifying a lot of code, most notably the sp_object_* to SPObject::*. Ted has introduced a number of improvement to the file dialog and file handling, adding better support for other file formats like EPS. Ishmal has introduced his EMCAScript code into the main codebase and is working on hooking it up for use with SVG files. Peter is working on fixing the units to be more sensible (px, pixel, etc. are proving to be rather confusing). More details on these changes are in the ReleaseNotes in Wiki and will all be included in the 0.39 release. There have also been a number of noteworthy non-coding events for Inkscape the past two weeks. An article by Bryce about Inkscape was published on OSNews earlier this month. It was picked up by Slashdot and other sites, and brought in a good bit of traffic. Several people are helping to move the nightly snapshots to less bandwidth-sensitive machines. The Open Clip Art Library has been picking up a lot of new contributions from artists, and is currently focusing on better capturing the metadata in the SVG files. Cedric has expressed an intent to develop an Inkscape Manual, based on the manual he had written for Sodipodi. This will nicely augment our tutorials, providing a more advanced reference for knowledgeable users. Rejon will be giving a presentation on Inkscape and OCAL at the SVGOpen. Whew! And there's probably a lot more that I forgot! As you can see, it's been a very actively busy couple of weeks and tons of stuff has been achieved. Now that the Pangoification work is looking like it will be done soon, it is time to think towards making a freeze and working towards packaging the 0.39 release. We probably need another week or two for further code settling and bug fixing, and probably a week-long freeze prior to the release. So that suggests a late-June/early-July timeframe for the release, but we'll see how things come together. There aren't really any Father's Day type images, though; they're actually all UK road signs. ;-) Nineteen items passed a validation against the OCAL File Guidelines, and these are included in this release. The items that failed were missing RDF metadata sections and did not indicate title, author, and license. A listing of files scanned and a log of the testing results is included for review. A Makefile is included for installation on *nix platforms via the command `make install` as root. `make uninstall` also works. On Windows, users will need to manually install to their preferred directory. While not many items are included in this release, the focus has been to find and establish a process for accepting, checking, and packaging the files. Hi, In first, thank you for Inkscape and for all your work. I think that you are habit to hear congratulations, so : here are some questions and some suggestions.... Is there a way , in the "Fill & Stroke" display, to set the unit of the color ? (for example : #00 to #FF, 0 TO 255, or 0% TO 100%) I don't see options about 'lock an object', is it possible ? I think that it could be more convenient, when the user open a svg file via the main window, and when this window is "not in use", to open this file in the main window And sorry for my language which I feel very brief, but I'm not really a master with regard to the english language :-/ ... Hi all Bear with me if these are dopey questions: Objects appear to have a default opacity (0.75 from the XML editor?) but the item properties dialog box says opacity = 1. So: What is the default opacity and how does one adjust the default? Why do objects that I edit in the XML editor to opacity = 1 still appear on screen as having an opacity? It's two different opacities. 0.75 is the fill opacity, it's set in the Fill & Stroke dialog, Fill tab, it only affects fill. The Object Properties lets you set an overall opacity of the entire object (both fill and stroke). FWIW, I am doing a small project - as a means of learning both Inkscape and Illustrator - on both in parallel and I am already listing comments on what I am doing in each program - that is, I have got my own comparison chart building up. I am not a great believer in these comparisons as they are very personal, depending on each person's background experience, whether they are a keyboard" or "mouse" person, how and in what order they like to do things and so on. As illustration, I worked for 40 + years in the construction industry and it was never possible to say that that project was better than the other one, there are so many different parameters in the contexts. I suspect there will be no "better" program, just "different". My point is that I would urge caution when claiming Inkscape is better than anything because there is nothing stopping people from using both. Inkscape can complement and become part of a graphic designers toolset, think of the users, comparisons dont really benifit them. Hi, Though I've only been playing with inkscape for a couple-three weeks (since the icon-designers' interview), and my only scripting expertise (outside of some rather crude personal shell scripts) is php, I'd love to help out if I can, because I well know this fabulous tool is going to become very important as svg is necessarily implemented in the WC3. I've been looking at autopackage, and feel I could take up that if the need arises. Also, readme's and wiki's are right up my alley. Also: * Code is checked into a subdir of inkscape_project/ I think I could write that one ;-) Anyway, after /. you'll probably be getting a barrage on your request from the more able, but just in case.... axlotl

Hi all, As Bob mentioned, the visit from Slashdot cratered our nightly Win32 snapshot server, and we need some help coming up with a better solution. No Inkscape experience needed, just need to be familiar with SourceForge, scripting, and compiling apps. The snapshots have proven useful in letting users test out and report on recently implemented features without having to compile it themselves. So this is a pretty highly valued service for the community. What we need going forward is a script or set of scripts that: * Checks out from CVS once a day and compiles for Win/Lin/Mac both debug and optimized. (e.g. via SF compile farm?) * If compilation is successful, post the packages to mirrors (e.g. SourceForge). * Allows users a place on the web to go to to get the latest version * Creates and provides autopackage versions (the AP folks are doing this for us currently, so this may not be necessary but is worth considering if it's not hard to do.) * Doesn't place the administrative responsibility on a single specific person * Code is checked into a subdir of inkscape_project/ * Has a README and/or wiki page explaining install & usage If you'd like to work on this or a piece of it, let me know and we can work out the details.
