I have only recently come across Inkscape am very impressed by the software it is very natural and easy to use. I am using Inkscape 0.4 something I know this is still being developed but Inkscape 0.39 does not seem to work with the graphics tablet I am using. The only criticism I would have is with the file dialog that does not show the network directories in windows. In 0.39 the file dialog seems fine. I download the most up to date exe file but I still don’t know how to get to the networked files. I am not sure if this is a development request or a bug or I am simply not using the dialog correctly. P.s. I hope that I am posting to the correct news group. Help Needed: Web content contributor

Heya, Would anyone be interested and willing to commit to helping update the content on the Inkscape website? The website's been vital to Inkscape's success, yet we're a bit short staffed at the moment; those of us who have maintained the website have also been getting into doing coding more, so we've spent less attention on it than we did in the past. If you're looking for an important way you can contribute to the project other than coding, and you like putting stuff on websites, this'd be a great way to participate in the project. Basically, the job requires staying in tune with what developers are working on (via the inkscape-devel@ list), and posting news blurbs to the homepage to the Inkscape homepage to keep people up to date on happenings. In addition, the site could use fleshing out more, with new examples of Inkscape in use, more documentation, and so forth. The work requires that you're comfortable using basic HTML and know how to check stuff into and out of CVS. The dynamic parts of the site are done using PHP, so knowledge of PHP is a plus, but not really necessary. I'm also looking for someone who's been with the project for a while (even if you've just been asking questions or submitting bug reports so far). Hey everyone, I've put up 0.40pre4. This will be the last pre-release assuming no surprises. There are some new tutorials and updates to the layers GUI elements in this release. Along with several bug fixes. NEW: calligraphy and tracing tutorials

Today two new tutorials were checked in: Calligraphy and Tracing (in Help > Tutorials). Calligraphy tutorial describes in detail the capabilities of the improved Calligraphy pen tool. A brief history of the art, parameters of the tool, useful tips, and many examples from simple strokes to complete lettering projects. Tracing tutorial explains all the options and parameters of the Potrace interface for bitmap tracing, with tips and examples.

Announce: Change to Inkscape Wiki

Everyone, Due to rampant spammer abuse of the Inkscape wiki, we've been forced to make a change to its usage. >From now on, whenever you edit a page, you must also type in the word 'NOSPAM' into a new entry box at the bottom of the page. If you do not, an error message will display; you can click back and add the NOSPAM and resubmit. This change will fake out the spammers, because their spambots won't know to do this step, so will be blocked. Possibly the spammers will catch on to this defense; if so, we'll invent new countermeasures. Thanks go to Kees Cook for implementing this for us. :-) I apologize for the inconvenience of doing this; I know it's a hassle, but if it eliminates the hassle of having to revert pages and delete spam in order to use the wiki, I think it will be worth the trade. If not, and you have an idea for a better solution, please let me know. Hi everyone, I have been trying to compile Inkscape .40rc3 for about a week now with no luck. I keep getting dependency errors. I am trying to compile on both SuSE 9.0 and Fedora Core 3 with the same error...I am not at the computers right now, so I can't remember the exact error. The main problem is that I easily compiled .39 on the SuSE system, but I don't know what I am missing with .40 and the subsequent releases. What packages are needed when going from .39 to the future versions? Thanks, Lee

Cut segment from circle, extend bezier curves from cut points

I have a logo I'm trying to reproduce in inkscape. The logo is based on two concentric circles, with segments removed and curves extending inward and outward around the circles. One extension extends both ways, so some sort of T-intersection with the curve will be necessary, or a second extension that runs into the first, collinear at the join. I've done a little experimenting, and I think I can eventually cut a circle-like path to remove a quarter segment, but then it isn't a circle anymore, with any node movements distorting the curvature. If possible, I want to lock the circular segments to their original curvature and center point. The segments to be removed are less than a quarter, so the endpoints need to move to less of an arc along the circle path. The C's represent the points at which I would like to cut the circle and have the freedom to add bezier extensions. Extension '1' can have a smooth curving joint with the cut point. Extension '2' only need meet extension '1' collinearly, and more or less at a right angle to C. The L's and R's are only intended keep the mail client from mangling (hopefully). They line up on the left and right columns, respectively. On the second of the two circles, the two inward extending curves will have to be joined in a smooth intersection after some bezier curvature. Overlaying background-color circles to represent cutout arcs would be less than optimal, since I may want to do curved endcaps and drop shadows or other filtering (when supported) on the unified curve. Can anyone suggest to the newbie a good way to make a stable, easily manipulated construction of the above curve in inkscape-cvs? Thanks.

With more layers functionality, additional bug fixes, calligraphy tool improvements and more the 0.40 release is starting to shape up. This has prompted the 0.40pre2 release to be created. Please take a look at this release and help us find more bugs!
