Multicoloured radial gradient -- how to?
by Hedley Finger
I want to create a representation of the HSV cone similar to that at
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HSV_cone.png> to show how it is
derived from the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:CIExy1931.svg>. I want all the
labels, arrows, and the wedge cut-out in this graphic -- which is
unfortunately a PNG and not a vector graphic -- to be removed.
If have tried using the clone tool to obliterate the unwanted arrows and
letters, but cannot get a clean blend, not even with a blurred brush
tool. One approach would be to treat a vector circle as the top of an
apple pie, and create a series of wedges like slices. Then, in each
wedge (slice), create a gradient from the edge to the tip. But I can't
figure out how to blend adjacent wedges.
Is there another approach to get a continuous rainbow of colours around
the perimeter of the circle, and then do a radial blend from white in
the centre to the perimeter?
I use The Gimp for pixmaps and Inkscape for vector graphics, and also
Scribus. If you don't have experience with these programs, can you
describe what to do in general terms, not in specific PhotoShop,
Illustrator, or InDesign terms. It shouldn't be too hard to translate a
general description into the necessary actions.

Hedley

Create the same size square box every time
by Glenn, Skeeter
Right now to creating a box with the F4 key or "Create Rectangles or
squares" pick and sizing the box to the size I need, to create a box at
the size I need already.
We only use Inkscape to create a 1/8 square box....That is it, nothing
more. But we need this box to come in at the same size every single
time. If I could have a presized box already made and just pick "Create
box" and know it would always come in the right size that would be
great.
Any ideas?

Avoiding artefacts in Inkscape SVG --> FrameMaker, PDF
by Hedley Finger
I have been using FrameMaker with DITA-FMx to develop a book. In
FrameMaker you can create composite graphics consisting of imported
pixmaps plus text frames, text lines (graphics text), rules, shapes,
etc. These do not export to DITA XML so I have been creating composite
graphics in Inkscape.
Unfortunately, when imported into FrameMaker you often get strange
artefacts: rules that were never drawn in the first place, random
rectangles overlaying the objects, etc. I tried exporting to PDF via
the Cairo engine but then my clipped pixmaps didn't (although, oddly,
they always imported perfectly into FM!).
The answer is to save as standard SVG in the Inkscape Save As dialogue,
ignoring all the dire warnings about losing Inkscape-specific aspects.
Be careful: this Save As turns into an "export from" because, when you
try to close the "saved" file, Inkscape informs you that it is not saved
and do you want to save it with Inkscape features. This will overwrite
the file you just "exported" unknowingly.
Anyway, this seems to solve all the problems with artefacts. I mention
it to the DITA and FrameMaker community in case this affects other
editors or tools.

Hedley

svg font problem
by Patrick Gundlach
Hi,
I have an exported illustrator 11 svg (Generator: Adobe Illustrator
11.0, SVG Export Plug-In . SVG Version: 6.0.0 Build 78) and inkscape
0.46 (downloaded today) on Mac OS 10.4.11 (intel)
This svg contains lines such as:
<text id="XMLID_11_" transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 78.3657
15.3501)"><tspan x="0" y="0" style="font-family:'MFCom-Cn'; font-size:
8;">XHIV</tspan>
But inkscape does not recognize the font-family style information,
the font gets rendered in bitstream vera, 12pt. When I edit and save
the file, the style gets written as
<svg:text
transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 78.3657 15.3501)"
style="-inkscape-font-specification:MF Com Cn;font-family:MF Com
Cn;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;font-stretch:normal;font-
variant:normal;font-size:8.00000017px;text-anchor:start;text-
align:start;writing-mode:lr;line-height:125%"
sodipodi:linespacing="125%"><svg:tspan
style="font-family:MF Com Cn;font-size:8.00000017px;-inkscape-
font-specification:MF Com Cn;font-weight:normal;font-
style:normal;font-stretch:normal;font-variant:normal;text-
anchor:start;text-align:start;writing-mode:lr;line-height:125%"
id="tspan2328">XHIV</svg:tspan>
(the output looks ok)
So there is a different font-family name. But when I understand fc-
match correctly, I have set up an alias for that:
$ fc-match 'MFCom-Cn'
mfcomcn_.pfb: "MF Com Cn" "Regular"
What can I do to get the correct font? The main application is the
automatic transformation to pdf (--export-pdf ..., -z) with inkscape.
Thanks,
Patrick

Low PDF export quality
by Máté Salát
Hello,
If I save the attached SVG file in PDF format I get a bed-quality result as you can see on this picture: http://screencast.com/t/NdZg030ee.
How Can I improve the quality of the PDF export? It would be nice to store the same data in the PDF file what is in the SVG.
Thanks, Máté

Re: [Inkscape-user] Inkscape won't start on OS X Leopard 10.5.2
by Jinzhi Lei
Thank you. Michael.
I download a Inkscape 4.5.1 and it works. I seems that the newer version 4.6 doesn't work.

Yes, it seems that a new version of Xquartz has changed fontconfg and caused this problem in Inkscape. I'm currently overseas without a good internet connection so I haven't yet worked on an official fix.
In the meantime, you should be able to fix the problem by opening Terminal.app and typing "mkdir ~/.fontconfig". Then rerun Inkscape.app and it should start okay.
Cheers,
Michael
