How 2 mask an arbitrary object with a grid of only whole smaller objects?

Hi, I'm moving over to Linux & Inkscape from Windows & Adobe. I'm working on learning the tools and methods in Inkscape. Got a lot of it figured out. Pretty similar actually. I do have a test case that I'd appreciate some help figuring out: Given an arbitrarily shaped object, how do I mask out a tiled pattern, using only complete tile objects? So for example, starting with (1) main object is a red, 8inch diameter circle (2) mask object is a black, 1inch square I want to mask (1) with (2), so I end up with a bunch of complete (no clipped, or partial) 1inch red squares on a grid, contained inside the boundary of the original 8 inch circle. I've figured out Tile Clones, so I can manually make a grid of mask objects larger than the original object. I guess I'd put together two layers -- one with the original and one with the mask later -- and intersect them. Is there a way to do this in (more?) automated fashion providing the sources only for (1) & (2)? Cheers, Jim

Trouble to save svg and export to pdf

Hi, I have a figure with 4 levels and different types of elements on these levels. the important part is a png image where I removed the background to have colour shining through. However I donot succeed in saving the svg file and exporting it to pdf: the png figure is not shown. Do you have any idea what triggers this behaviour? Other similar files are properly saved and exported. Enclosed are two screenshots to show what is shown in inkscape (1) and anywhere else (2), for example in windows explorer which is examplary for Acrobat and anyother program. You will notice that the next figure 127BK is shown properly, demonstrating that with the first figure there is something fishy. Thanks for your help Bernhard

node sculpting behavior

Hi Friends, When I first started using Inkscape, which was version 0.44, node sculpting had a different behavior than it has now. I want to ask if it would it be possible to provide the previous behavior, as an option, perhaps using key modifier, or option on the control bar? I'll try to describe, with attached screenshot (sculpt2.png). You can see that dragging the right end node, with Alt key results in the nodes wider apart in the middle, and closer together on the ends (no matter whether I dragged from the right or left side, the result is the same). I'm not sure exactly in which version this changed. But previously, dragging the same right end node would result in nodes wider apart, the closer they are to the node being dragged. Since I can't show an example, imagine it's the same right end node, and it would behave much like a rubberband...or elastic string -- stretched more near where the force is applied, and less on the other end. And so the nodes would be progressively closer together, the further they were away from the node being dragged. One thing I used to like to do, was find an end node of a spirogram. Select all nodes except the other end, then Alt + drag the first end, and it would unravel the spirogram from one end to the other. One of the first images I ever made with Inkscape is also attached, the unravelled spirogram. You just can't do that anymore, with Inkscape, afaik. To be honest, I loved that old behavior and used it a lot. I haven't found many uses for the current behavior. I guess it can make a good bell curve. But I think both behaviors are useful. Would it be possible to provide this optionally? If so, I'd like to make that a feature request. (Unless it already is??) Thank you very much, brynn

Freezes when saving svg created with Chrome's SVG Crowbar

Dear list, I work a lot with d3.js to create charts and other visualizations, and I have to export static versions of them every once in a while. After searching the web it turns out that Chrome's plugin called "SVG Crowbar" (https://nytimes.github.io/svg-crowbar/) is currently one of the most reliable tools for that. It works quite well indeed (except that any style written in CSS is not taken into account, which is fine). But after some editing in Inkscape, saving the file makes it freeze completely. I have no choice but to kill Inkscape manually. Does anybody know what goes wrong ? Cheers, Pierre.
