Converting Type to Shapes

Hi! I've been using Inkscape to do some typographic designs, and I can use the text tool to make a single charachter and then use the "Object To Path" command on the Path Menu (CTRL SHIFT C) to convert it into an editable shape I can control with the node editor, and make its bounding box fit tightly around the shape so I can use the Align and Distribute palette to place it just right. However, when I write a line of text, I'd like to use "Object To Path" to convert the text into a group of objects, which I can then ungroup and rearrange using Align and Distribute. When I do this at the moment, all the letters appear to be one object. Any tips? :-) -- Regards, Dave

Bounding boxes and patterns, cloning, etc...

Greetings! I am a long time Freehand user (still using Fh8 on the mac) and I am trying to switch to Inkscape. I playing with it for a few hours last weekend and I have a few questions. FH8 used to have 'replicate' and used to remember the offset of duplicate options so one could easily duplicate a set of things over and over. For example, if I wanted to build a grid, I could draw a line then duplicate it once placing it in the right place then hit the duplicate key over and over. I've been trying this with patterns and cloning and I have problems with bounding boxes. It looks like the tiling wants to tile base on bounding box, but the box is outside of the actual area by some amount like the size of miters, or lines or soemthing. i.e. The bounding box doesn't bound to the node points, but to the line. This makes it impossible (as far as I can tell) to make a pinstripe pattern. Anyone encountered things like this before? I'm using Inkscape 0.44. Thanks for any help! -Andrew

If you have worked in technical support you find many more users are like this when it comes to their computer. without really trying inkscape has been successful in attracting artistic users who want inkscape for their various kidns of crafts work it will help if things can be kept simple with one right way to do things and not too many assumptions made about inkscape users being experts at technical drawing and wanting many different possibilities to achieve the same end results, as it is the results that matter. > - My claim of different scenarios for drodown and palette > (see above) Hope you will consider my counter suggestion and perhaps further describe how and why you use the dropdown. scaling geometry but not Stroke

I find it hard to create a collection of shapes that are different sizes, yet have the same thickness of line. Currently I create shapes with the tools on the left, such as a circle. when I am done creating a circle I find that if I want to make it a little smaller (reduce diameter), the thickness of the line is also reduced when the circle is modified by the provided handles. Is there a UI feature I am missing that will allow me to change the size and shape of a object, without changing it's line size? thanks for fun app. I apprieciate any help! -Lucas

Setting locale

I'm using Inkscape on a Windows XP with the locale set to hebrew (israel). I've had no problems until now but I just downloaded a development snapshot (the new gradient tool rock! and windows stay on top!) and now the entire UI has switched to a right-to-left UI with bits and pieces of hebrew stuck here and there. I remember GTK was supposed to respect a language setting in the enviroment variables - if you added LANG=en it would ignore the system setting on Gimp. But this didn't work for Inkscape when I tried it. So, is there any way to make inkscape ignore the windows set locale?

"union" for single shapes?

Is there a command to eliminate overlaps in paths (especially calligraphy paths), i.e. to create a path that is just the outside of a particular path? I can sort-of achieve this effect by drawing an overlapping path and unioning the two, but I would like to be able to do this without the extra 'helper' path. -- Mathew (sorry, .sig file is on the other computer)

version `GCC_3.4' not found

Hi, Just tried the new inkscape-0.45pre1.x86.package that is advertised on www.inkscape.org. I am getting these errors when trying to launch: [mimooh@...1459... ~]$ inkscape inkscape: /lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by inkscape) inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by inkscape) The GCC_3.4 one seems to be fatal - inkscape won't launch. This is my configuration: [root@...1459... ~]# rpm -qa | grep gcc libgcc-3.3.6-4 gcc-dirs-1.0-2 gcc-3.3.6-4 gcc-c++-3.3.6-4 [root@...1459... ~]# rpm -ql libgcc /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 I would say I use a rather fresh distro (PLD Linux) and I just upgraded libgcc package. What is the problem then? Karol

Embed objects as links?

Hi, First, I'm a new and very impressed user of Inkscape. I'm no drawing application expert (far from it), but to me it seems that a lot of careful and creative thinking has gone into designing the user interface, and the result is very enabling. An issue has arisen that I bet has been asked before; if so, my apologies (I did search for it). My daughter and I are are using Inkscape to try drawing a new set of icons for an open-source educational game (Tuxmath). These icons contain a number of distinct objects (penguins, igloos) that can be mixed-and-matched, and the individual ingredients can change (the penguin can flap its wings, part of the igloo can melt, etc.) We're now to the stage where we're trying to combine these ingredients into whole icons; however, we're noticing that as we improve as artists we'd like to, for example, go back and fix up our igloo a bit more---but then we find ourselves making the same changes (or delete, copy, paste) in all the "derived" files that use the igloo + other ingredients. I'd like to find out if there's a way that these improvements can be propagated to all of our combined icons without having to manually copy-and-paste. Basically, is there a way to embed an object as a link? And then have future edits build from there?
