Transfering between layers

I am at the new and learning stage with Inkscape Layers - I am importing vector graphics that was previously was on different layers, that information has been lost in the transfer and I am now trying to re-establish the layer detail. I simply want to move items from Layer 1 to the new layers I have established, the help files don't seem to cover this. All and any suggestions most welcome. With thanks, Terry

Why don't we add a third option "Move to layer ... ", which opens a sub-menu with "Layer one", "Layer two", "Layer three". This is much faster, as we can choose the desired layer directly. As an example in our xml document we would have a flagnote "FL1" talking about a part of the SVG graphic we want to point attention at. When the end user would be reading the xml document, they could click on the "FL1" located inside of the SVG and it would take them to that part of the xml document that describes that SVG. So, how do I create that link from the SVG "FL1" to the xml document "FL1"? Remember that the svg is imbedded with in the same xml. Some days, it's not even worth chewing through the restraints. New drawing tool idea

Hello, For the past month I have been thinking over an idea I would really like to see made in an opensource vector program. Inkscape is my favorite so I'm posting this here. I think this would be a really great tool but would also take quit a bit of work (or at least I think it would, feel free to prove me wrong.) What I want: The tool is somewhat of a line tool. Similar to the freehand tool in that it creates a vector line, but enhanced. The differences would rest on the that is drawn. Instead of the curves that the freehand tool draws, the line would be composed of joints evenly spaced apart (the spacing would in general be small, but be user customizable). Each joint should have their x,y cords as well as a width property (it may be better to organize that different, but each joint needs to have this property, which would be a variable number set by a stylus used to display the line, I'll get to this in a moment). In addition a joint must be able to reside in multiple lines. The reason being so that two lines can "connect" to each other. Each line would simple be a stroke; the button clicks, the mouse moves, the button lets up - a line. So say you draw a line in the shape of a big C. Then you want to join the open end and have tails sticking out on ether end. You would start above the C shape on the rightmost side and draw your line down. As you draw you can hold down on CTRL to connect the line to any other you pass over (Or maybe have it so after you draw the line you can press a hotkey and it connects itself to any other lines it intersects with). That's all for the user drawing the lines, now for how it would display it. I'm not totally sure about how to do this (as if I am on any of this) but I was thinking it should draw out to look like a pen or pencil stroke (maybe have the general width be user defined so it could look big and fat to like a brush stroke). This is what I was wanting the width attr in the joint for. Maybe for displaying it create a line (or rather a complex polygon shaped like a line) that moves through all the points with the width (distance between the two edges on the sides of the line) changing with the width attr in the joints. Did any of that make sense? Ok, two more things. Coloring and editing. For editing I want something cool :) What I was thinking was that you can press down on CTRL or right click or something near a line and start drawing. As you go it moves and morphs the line to how you are drawing. It would have to automatically add and remove joints to keep evenly spaced. Is that at all clear? Lastly the coloring. I don't know how this could be made into inkscape easily (not that any of this would be easy) but I would want the ability to be able to fill in enclosures in the lines (also be able to change the color of a line but that wouldn't be difficult.) I could only really think of one way to do this. It would find all the joints of the lines that it needs to fill in and create a polygon from them (the joints). Perhaps have them be the actual joint objects (is this very feasible in C/C++?) so that when a line is moved after it is filled in the fill would update with it. Anyway, that is what I would really like to see in a vector editor like inkscape (I would love to see it in inkscape.) There are probably still several design holes that I overlooked but I think I conveyed what is in my mind. This would take a lot of work but I think it would be a very valuable tool to have. I tired playing around with it myself using cairo and PyGTK but wasn't able to get very far (I need to learn to stay as far away from the DrawingArea and Pixbuf/Pixmap as possible... ether that or get it figured out once and forall). If anyone thinks this would be cool and might want to implement it that would be awesome! At the moment I couldn't really fund anyone to do this and I'm not even sure this is something that would be wanted in inkscape. Colour of End Markers

Stupid question, for which I apologise, but can anyone tell me how to apply a coloured stroke fill to an arrowhead end marker? The line that it terminates is filled and stroked to my satisfaction and I'd assumed that end markers would follow suit, but no, they remain stubbornly black. I've searched 'Help@ and Tavmjong's splendid Inkscape Guide to no avail, so here I am with what must be an FAQ. Peter HB

I know adding prefs settings for individual shortcuts is evil, but since we don't yet have a UI for editing keymaps, and these features were requested A LOT, I think in this case it's justified: * You can now enable Space+mouse drag to pan canvas, as it does in Adobe Illustrator. This mode is enabled by the "Left mouse button pans when Space is pressed" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog. By default it is off and pressing the spacebar key switches you to Selector and back, as it always did in Inkscape. * By default, rotating the mouse wheel scrolls the canvas vertically and Ctrl+wheel zooms in and out. Now, if you turn on the "Mouse wheel zooms by default" checkbox in the Scrolling tab of the Inksape Preferences dialog, this behavior is reversed: mouse wheel zooms without Ctrl and scrolls with Ctrl. This new mode should be familiar for users of AutoCAD and CorelDraw. * In the Zoom tool, right mouse button always zooms out instead of calling the context menu (which is rather useless in this tool anyway). -- bulia byak Inkscape. Ruler Preferences

By default, the rulers on an Inkscape document have an origin in the lower-left hand corner. Is there a setting or pref or config line I can change to move the origin to the upper left-hand corner?

Objects along path.

Hello, I wonder if it is possible in any way to apply an object to a path like in Corel or Illustrator. I.e. an object which is stretched and deformed along the length of a path. I could e.g. take a triangle and applying it to a path would yield a path with a spiky tip and a blunt base, the with of the triangle. If that object was life, i.e. changing the original triangle would change the path, that'd be even more useful. Another nice feature would be the ability to set the width of a path wither anywhere or at least at any knot -- w/o converting the path into outlines. Cheers, Moritz

Font disappears after upgrade on OS X

I upgraded inkscape from 0.44 to 0.45 on OS X. One of my fonts is no longer available, and of course it's one I was using for a project. The particular font is Onyx, for what it's worth. I tried running fc- cache -fv as myself and as root; fc-cache gives no errors but inkscape still can't see my font. I tried copying the font from my home directory where it was into the system font directory and no luck there either. Can anyone help me get inkscape to see this font again? John Haiducek

Hi Lynx, Have you tried snapping the center of the small circles to the contour of the big circle? Snapping options can be controlled in the document properties dialog. If you make sure that the center of the whole group of small circles is coincident with the center of the big circle, you can also make the small circles tangentially aligned by holding CTRL-SHIFT while scaling the whole group of small circles. If you want to try the snapping though you might want to use one of the latest precompiled versions (windows only) or compile the SVN version yourself, because snapping has improved a lot since v0.45.1 Diederik > Hello! > > I'm wondering how to aligne circles along a big circle and along a spiral. whiteboard

Hi there, does anyone used the whiteboard function succesfully? I tried 3 different jabber server and two of them (jabber.org and amessage.info) brought my a "login: no second SASL challenge offered by server" error and afterwards crash inkscape with an "internal error." The third server (gmx.de) worked. But i can sign into the other two with pidgin without a hassle, so any guess whats the problem? A not implemted auth type in inkscape? Espacially that jabber.org didn't work disappointed my a bit. greetings, Florian

problem with the scribble-xinput program of gtk

Hi, I compiled the source code scribble-xinput.c and excute it. When I click on the "Input Dialog" button, a window pops out, In the window, There are several devices to choose from: pad-cintiq21ux stylus-cintiq21ux eraser-cintiq21ux cursor-cintiq21ux and several Mode: Disabled Screen Window If I choose stylus, then choose screen, there is segmentation Button press on device 'stylus-cintiq21ux' I get "segmentation fault (core dumped)" If I choose other combinations, then nothing happened, I tried to print out the device source, and it is null. I do have a tablet that works for inkscape, which in turn use gtk. I really don't where the problem is? Does anyone have similar experience or know how to solve it? should be code? or my tablet? or something else? Embedding SVG in webpages

Hello, I know this isn't exactly an Inkscape issue, but I gather there is some knowledge in this group so I'm asking here (and before getting tarred and feathered over at comp.infosystems.authoring.html for non-topicality). I want to embed an SVG image in a webpage using the <object> tag. This works well, but I'd like the image to be scaled to a certain fraction of the page's width. After all, the "S" in SVG stands for scaleable. But when I add a "width" attribute to the object tag, it just cuts off the embedded image rather than scaling it. I know SVG support is missing or buggy on most browsers, but I'd still like to experiment with it. I'm using Opera 9.20 on Linux. Unfortunately, Inkscape's command-line parameter --export-width isn't honored with the --export-plain-svg option; otherwise I'd just do some downscaling in my webpage-generating makefile. possible bug: page vertical resize changes coordinates

Hi there, I'm using Inkscape 0.45.1 under MacOSX. I have a problem when I resize a page vertically: the elements of the drawing move with the resize, because their distance remains fixed from the _top_ of the page, instead of from the bottom of the page. When a page is resized vertically, the height of the page changes. The bottom is the zero, so it remains fixed, and it is the top that moves. However, the coordinates of the elements of the drawing move with the top. I think this is not desirable: their coordinates are from the bottom of the page, so they should remain in the same position in respect to the bottom of the page. Unfortunately, this is not what happens. For example, if I align my drawing with the grid and then resize vertically, the elements are completely misaligned, because the grid remains fixed from the bottom of the page, but the elements don't. This does not happen when I resize a page horizontally. In that case, it is the right border that moves, but the elements of the drawing maintain their positions in respect to the left border, where the horizontal zero is. This is the desirable behaviour, IMO. I am thinking of filling a bug report, but I'm new to Inkscape. I want to be sure that I'm right and that this is indeed a bug and not a feature that was implemented for some reason that I don't understand. Can some one comment on this? Thanks, Paulo

Thanks for the clarification, this explains the behaviour. However, I think it is an error to implement things this way. Either stay with the other illustration programs' way (0 on the bottom left corner), or with the SVG way (0 on the top left corner), but don't mix both ways in one drawing.
