Insert symbol from font file

Hi, I was wondering if there is some way to insert a symbol from a font into the document. I think it would be nice to have some sort of 'insert symbol' option with a window that let's you choose a font from those installed on the system or open a font file and presents you with the glyphs in that font. Then you select one (or even more) and it gets inserted in the document as a path. I would be really helpfull if you have some fonts with graphics. Facundo -- =,=

3d type effect.

It is well known how to create drop shadow effects in various tools including inkscape. What I am asking about is a true 3d effect, such as you see in the opening credits of movies in the 1930's and 1940's. I can see how one can do it manually, with two representations of each character overlapping and lines drawn by hand between corresponding vertices. But is there a less tedious way? -- John Culleton

change the drag line

When I'm creating straight lines with the Bezier tool, sometimes i have to trace over black lines. The current Bezier tool line is "red'. Is there a way to change the default color of the line to white or some other color? -Christopher

installed bar code font wont appear

Hi All, I wanted to add some barcode information to my work in Inkscape, but for some reason Inkscape wont display for me to select the barcode font "Code EAN13" . But in GIMP, Ms Word, Excel and other programs in windows, I can see and select the font and it appears just fine. Being able to work with Adobe Illustrator files in Inkscape (workaround)

Hello, I would like to share something that I have found extremely helpful, before I migrated completely to linux I had adobe illustrator and photoshop etc. But then I left window because of all its problems and now I use linux exclusively. The problem that I had faced in the past was whenever I had to use drawings I had made in adobe illustrator cs and obviously because of format differences I couldn't open them with inkscape. Well today I was excited to have found a workaround to this problem. before I continue you will need to have the program called GIMP installed in addition to Inkscape Here is my solution: 1) Go to the folder where you have your adobe illustrator file 2) Right click on the adobe Illustrator file and choose to open it with GIMP, this will cause GIMP to load 3)GIMP will ask you a few things via a new window you, if you know what you are doing feel free to modify them if not you can just click ok 4) Once the file loads in GIMP you can go to file-->Save AS, then type the name that you want and change the extension of the file to JPEG. After you do that click OK 5) when you click ok GIMP will notify you that it needs to export the drawing, go ahead and slide the quality to 100% and click ok 6) after your drawing has been converted to JPEG open up Inkscape and go to --->File-->Import bitmap, then browse to the folder where the JPEG file is stored and click open. This will then place your drawing in the INKSCAPE program. 7)When you have the drawing there you can use the Pen tool in Inkscape to trace over your artwork once you are done you can discard the imported JPEG and save your file as native inkscape file. As you can see this solution requires some work to be done but hey, at least you are able to use your Adobe Illustrator files and not panic about not being able to open them like what happened to me in the past. I hope this helps, if some one else has an easier solution feel free to let me know. I want to dust of my programming skills and thought I'd play with inkscape in my spare time. Trying to use Eclipse on a Ubuntu 7.04 system. I did this command to copy the svn locally: (/home/wes/inkscape) svn checkout https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/inkscape/inkscape/trunk inkscape Now that I have the source code how do I make it run in Eclipse? So far I have created a new project called WesInkscape in the dir /home/wes/inkscape/src I can't seem to build it or run it. The inkscape wiki page for eclipse doesn't help. Preventing patterns from shifting

Hello all, I started a drawing on a US Letter–sized canvas; it contains a lot of objects that use patterns as fills. To share this drawing, I want to crop a lot of whitespace from the edges. When I do that, however, the positions of the patterns within the objects all change. Is there any way to "lock" patterns so that moving the objects doesn't change their appearance? How to export a pattern filled-shape to be imported correctly by Adobe Illustrator and Firefox

Hi! What is the way AI and Firefox to understand pattern fills of objects, created in Inkscape? I can't achieve this, getting no fill at all when opening in AI or Firefox. I've noticed that the image itself is not embedded inside the SVG. Is there a way to embed it inside? Maybe some Inkscape options that I didn't find?

Strange movement during scaling

Dear all, I have trouble with Inkscape while scaling objects or changing the width of lines. E.g. if I draw a polygon with the line with width=1, then I can have all the vertex of the polygon placed nicely on a grid. If I now change the line width to e.g. 0.5, then suddenly, all the nodes are off grid!! Does anybody know how to prevent Inkscape from this?? Best regards Georg P. Israel

Export bitmap function stops at around 900KB, instead of exporting the entire 5MB svg graphic file onto my desktop.

Anyone know how I can keep the process from stopping when it's only about 20% done?? I have a PowerBook G4 with a 512MB RAM card (original equipment). I tried upgrading the RAM to 1GB but that didn't work any better.? I want to eventually translate my Inkscape svg file into jpeg format so I can get the thing printed at imagestation.com. A question about node positioning.

Hello, in the past I designed a lot of civic arms using Freehand 9 and MX, and became quite friendly with it, though I always had to run it in VMware. I was long since then on the search for a replacement, and years ago stumbled upon sodipodi and now inkscape. It fulfills almost all my needs, and far exceeds (in terms of usability w/ keystrokes, cloning/mirroring etc.) the possibilities I came to use in Freehand. One thing though remains, which I'm at a loss in making them work as I want them to. a) If I have a path, which is made up of various nodes (as happens with every shape, say a circle and a square, merged into a a b +-------------+ | | | | | | | | + c + d \_ _/ --_ _-- --+-- e shape. This later is comprised of five nodes (a..e). But if I want to place them on predefined positions, there's no possibility to do so, e.g. having Node e on (300, 0). I can either use the mouse to drag it near this point (but will never manage to do it exactly), or use the XML editor, in which I don't see the point (b/c it's such a royal pain searching through it and finding finally this point. obviously this should then be done for all five points) I can also use the grid and snap to grid functions, but I don't want to be limited to only integer numbers, sometimes I want a point to be at 0.155,10.245 (or something else), So: is there a possibility to enter the coordinates one drags the node with the mouse (this would certainly also be cool for the handles of nodes) -- cheers, Alex -- Cheers, Alex

Using Wacom Graphire 4 in GIMP (Mac OS X/X11)

Hi! I am testing a Wacom Graphire 4 tablet in my Mac (PPC) and appearently I can't use its pressure sensitivity in GIMP. Has anyone managed to use a graphics tablet in GIMP, under Mac OS X? Is X11 for Mac compatible with this feature? I also tryied in Inkscape, but it only behaves like a mouse, pointing and clicking, with no pressure signs... Anyone can help, please? Seeking Inkscape Teacher for SVGOpen

Hi- We are looking for someone to teach a half-day course in using Inkscape for SVGOpen 2007. SVGOpen is an annual SVG conference, and this year, it is being held in Tokyo. The class would be the afternoon of September 4, 2007. https://www.svgopen.org/ The teacher should be very familiar with Inkscape, and would ideally have some knowledge about the SVG format. This is not intended to be a design course, but it would be nice if the teacher has a good design sense, or even training in design. If the teacher is comfortable with other design tools, such as Illustrator, that might help in answering student questions. The teacher should speak adequate English, but a Japanese translator may be available. The class should give a broad overview of the functionality of Inkscape. Beyond that, the subject matter is left to the discretion of the teacher. The teacher would receive a free pass to the whole conference. I'm attempting to use the Effects on Mac (PowerBook G4, 10.4.10) which utilise some Python libraries what I've understood. I've followed the instructions found at : http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX#Enabling_python_eff… installed PyXML and numpy and even changed the Python version to 2.4 thinking that PyXML functions with that, but still no go. The instructions found in the above link states that on OS X 10.3 the file path to the site-packages folder is different than on 10.4 which in my case isn't so. The Python packages which I have (2.4 and 2.5) are separated according by framework: /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/python2.3/site-packages not like this: /Library/Python/2.3/site-packages/ Can the problem be laying here which in that case what is there to be done?

Text over an arc for a logo.

This is an interestng problem that was posed on another list. It involves text enclosed in a rectangle which is altered with a shallow arc across the base instead of a straight line. Therefore the text becomes progressively smaller toward the center and then increases in size again toward the right side. The text remains vertical. The serifs follow the arc. This url points to an example: http://www.saylesdesign.com/portfolio/corpident/project4zoom.htm Further the designer wants the two characters at each end to remain unchanged. The arc takes up 1/3 of the rectangle's width. The text has spaces in it, such as "Joe's Bar and Grill." Problems with Connector Lines

Hi, I have problems using the connector lines. I am editing a document with medium complexity (not too many objects) and at the beginning it worked fine, but after a while the connector lines started to behave very strange (only in this document). When I draw a new connector line, lets say from one circle to another circle and I connect it from the center of the first circle to the center of the second circle it would always snap to the top of both circles and not to the center. Also, the connector line would render on top of the two circles, not below, as it used to behave at the beginning. If I start a new document, everything is fine again. Is there a document specific setting for connector lines that I screwed up? I also checked that the two circles don't have the "inkscape:connector-avoid" attribute set to true in the SVG tree (XML editor), which is not the case. Any ideas what might be wrong in my document? Book on Inkscape

Hello, people. I may have missed it on the mailing list, but I don't think anyone has commented on this book, and I don't see an announcement on the website either. Since, as far as I know, this is the first Inkscape book to be published, I'd say that it should deserve a bit of publicity. So, the data: "Inkscape Starter Kit", by Emilia de Castro Guerra, published by Pearsons Education France, some 250 pages, plus CD-ROM. Amazon link: http://www.amazon.fr/Inkscape-Apprenez-pratiquez-cr%C3%A9ez-1C%C3%A9d%C3%A9… I've found the book quite nice for beginners. It would be useful for people wanting to give courses on Inkscape, so that the students have some guide to follow. There are also some tricks and in-depth exploration of functionalities that can be helpful to more advanced users, if only to formalize all that things that we learned by trial-and-error and instinct. Unfortunately, the book is in French (techie and simply written, I suppose, because I don't know the language but I was able to understand most of it). It'd be interesting if they translated it into english or other languages.
