After you import your bitmap, go into the "Document Properties..." dialog and select "Fit Page to Selection". Defining a clones group as a mask

It seems a group of clones can't be defined as a mask. I drew 1 ellipse shape and cloned it 2 times. Then I grouped the 3 shapes and defined it as a mask to an other shape. It seems only the original shape is used as a mask, the others are ignored. Worst when disabling the mask, only the original shape is restored. The group is lost and all its clones. Try to define the 3 red ellipses as a mask to the black ellipse using the attached file. Am I missing something ? Clone across files

Hi, is it possible to clone an object/group across files? I tried using clone, but pasting into another file results in an orphaned node (apparently the reference is only valid _within_ the file with the original). Is there some other way to achieve something like this? I want to prepare a set of slides with the same background. I can of course select and copy the background from one slide to the next, but if I want to change something on it then I need to go over all files again. Is there a way to define an object/group in one inkscape file and then link to this in another inkscape file? For plain XML files it would look like below, but I don't know, if this would work for SVG files and if I can use the XML editor in inkscape to achieve an effect like this. Embedding/linking bitmaps

Is there some way to embed bitmaps in SVG? I was looking at a file I made with a bitmap in it and noticed that the absolute path to the image was hardcoded into the .svg, making this svg useless on any machine but my own. So is there some way to embed bitmap pixel data in SVG? Does the standard even allow that? Aside from that is there some way to get Inkscape to copy linked images to be side-by-side with the svg and use relative paths rather than absolute paths? Does the w3c have some sort of .jar-like standard for creating svg bundles that include both a main svg and associated bitmaps and other linked content all-in-one? That seems like it would be the ideal solution. --bb

Group a shape with a text object

Hi there, I'm new to Inkscape but I want to know if it's possible to group a shape with a text object like you can do in Adobe Illustrator? In other words if you draw a square that you want to color programmatically, that square will need a text object grouped to it, e.g. 'My Square' and finally save it as SVG file. Adding lines to a path

Hello all... Sorry if this question is unclear/confusing and if it is rather simple, but for the life of me, I've not been able to do it. I have a closed path (by that I mean a shape with a "closed" border, a border in all faces), my problem is that I want to add a line which crosses the shape from one side to the other, but I want to do it so that the line seems to be a continuation of the border (and ideally become part of the shape or object), the problem is that I don't know how could I do this? Heck, I'm not sure if I make any sense at all... Thus far I've tried drawing a single line with the bezier tool, but trying to "merge" the line with the rest of the shape using the stroke tools doesn't yield the desired effect... And I'm quickly running out of ideas, maybe what I want is not possible and I'll have to manage both parts (the shape and the line) as different objects grouped together, or it is possible, but I haven't found how... Any hints?

Of cut, paste, and crop

Hi list, I suppose this is slightly OT. I need to copy and paste a portion of my figure over to Word. I realize that I can't just do an Edit -> Copy -> switch to Word -> Paste (although that would be nice). So, I have to do it by creating a new file, save it as EMF file, and then switch over to Word, do an Insert -> Picture - From File. That works. However, the resulting figure is a full page figure - with lots of empy space. I also realize that there is no crop feature in Inkscape. So, can somebody please point me to a tool that can crop the EMF file so I can import it into Word? Thanks, -- John Henry

Karol, Thanks for the reply. Well, yes and no. :=) Following your advise, I discovered a way to do it. After pasting the objects onto the new page, *don't* do the "Fit page to selection" from the object property. That won't work. Instead, invoke the "Document Property" function from the top (under File), and then select the "Fit page to selection" from there. The whole page then shrink down to the size of the object - rather then trying to explode the object up to the size of the page. Works perfectly. :=) Thanks for your inspiration. Thanks for the reply, Aaron. I don't want to work in PNG mode because there is an obvious quality disadvantage when I resize the figure later inside Word. That's why I am using EMF. The quality is very good in EMF mode. I have recently asked how to easily scale multiple objects, including characters, and then later scale only to a particular font size. Somehow, this is difficulty to do in inkscape (but I hope there is an easy trick!). It is much easier to understand the problem if you see what I mean by example. Folks, I am trying to get a tight bounding box around a single exclamation mark input as text at large font size, selected, converted from text to path, and saved as a PDF, from within Inkscape. I have used Path-> Object to path and File -> Document properties -> Page -> Fit page to selection and exported as PDF. There seems to be a margin beyond the object at the bottom, and the top of the object is cut off, possibly by the same amount. This is seen when viewing the exported PDF at 6400% in Acroread. The dotted box that appears in Inkscape when the object is selected appears perfect. The settings for snapping to grid/object/path have been toggled with no change in behaviour of the exported file. I can post PDFs illustrating this if told where to post them. Is this a bug, and if so, is there a workaround? Thanks. Chandra 30 Apr 07

For design reasons, it is easiest to scale all objects first, then select the text tool with the same objects selected, and then setting the ORIGINAL font size in the text tool bar. And often, I need to scale the drawing as a whole in a non-aspect-ratio-keeping way. Because the original aspect ratio is not kept, it would indeed be extremely helpful to be able to restore text objects to the original aspect ratio. The way I do this now is going into the SVG file, but that is inconvenient. One of the 'dangerous' things is that right now, text objects with the same font size can be of different sizes, depending on their set aspect ration in the 'transform scale(a,b)' part of the xml text object. The way to solve it is to take the 'transform etc' part out of the xml. Maybe one could write an EFFECT for this, or write a simple shell script. I say that this is dangerous because I think it is a little bit counter intuitive that a text object with the same size can have different actual sizes. It is really easy for a user to get confused. For example, if you have two text objects that APPEAR to be the same given their font size, as shown in the tool bar, there is no way to tell which one is in the original font aspect ratio and which one is in the non 1:1 aspect ratio (unless you look at the transformation part in the xml, I guess). You can select all text labels and set any >font size for them. Thanks for picking up on this. It turned out that what I described was due to the particular development version of Inkscape. After I checked the stable version 0.45 it works as you say. As you say, rescaling fonts in inkscape correctly changes the font size in the font-toolbar. What I do not understand is how you get the 'original' aspect ratio of a text object. For example, if I do the following: 1) Make text object in fontsize 32px 2) Select the text object, make it very wide, for example 3) Select it with the text tool again. Now set back the font size to 32px, and it will still not have the original aspect ratio. Is there a way to deal with this? Hello, I have a problem with several guide lines which I want to remove but doing it manually is a tedious work. Is it possible to do it at once? XML editor doesn't help here since I can only select one guideline under <solidpodi:namedview id="base"> node. I thought to open the xml file in an external editor and then remove the guides while the file is open in inkscape. But then how to update the canvas and is it safe to change an xml file from outside while it is loaded in inkscape? regards, Seweryn Kokot

L-System, Whirl, and System Requirements

First I'd like to say that I'm very impressed with the level of talent and artistry in the inkscape community. Makes a hobbyist like me feel like a definite poser. The L-System I really like this feature. I was just using it to draw the the teeth on a gear. I don't fully understand how it works though. Obviously A though F will draw a line forward the specified number of steps. G though L move the cursor without drawing. + and - designate a right and left turn respectively and | (i think it's the pipe symbol) is 180 degree turn. I am having a hard time with the "[" and "]" that designate remember point on stack and return to point on stack, what's meant by Axiom, and what happens if an X or Y is thrown into the function definition. Also, does anyone know a good page/reference for most of the famous fractals? Whirl Whirl also has me a little stumped. I would think that x,y coordinate specified in the dialog would define the axis of rotation. I've tried several times to make an object whirl around it's center of mass/symmetry without any luck. I've use the points designated by the selection dialog which didn't seem to work. I'm guessing it's one of the corners of the bounding box. The I tried putting guides through what I thought was the center and using those values. No luck there either. My System My system seems to get really bogged down when ever I have any significant amount of nodes/objects for inkscape to keep track of. I'm running Windows XP with a 2.4 GHz Celeron and 640 MB of ram. I think this is going to become a significant source of headaches for me in the near future. I want to upgrade. Thoughts about minimum requirements for working comfortably on a Mac? I was thinking of trying a Linux system, but decided against it after installing Fedora Core 6 on my PC. I ran into too many compatibility issues with modems, monitor, printers, and other input devices. But, that's a discussion for another forum. Thanks for some great software. I hope I can contribute in the project in the near future. ~Aaron

Greetings, all! Not much was "done by hand" in this case. I used 3 very "disturbed" stars with various settings (Unioned together) to create the basic shape. The highlights and shadows are merely a matter of making offset copies of my base shape, doing a difference of an offset and the original for each effect, blurring the results, then grouping and clipping the two lighting effects. This allows me to change the base color to resemble ink or paint or even glowing toxic waste. Also, I've made some improvements to the results of my technique. The new splat is much smoother looking than my initial posting! More liquidy-looking gooeyness!!! I'll definitely put a tutorial together over the next few days. - Tony
