trouble installing Inkscape 0.92.2 via Homebrew

document properties window

texture extension

Why is inkscape no longer able to handle jpeg files

I have win7-64 and are running inkscape .92, gimp, lightroom and many other programs. The jpeg files from lightroom 4.4 are no longer accepted by inkscape. Everytime I want to load a jpeg it throws an error. Very strange! Once converted by gimp to png they are accepted. Most propably this is a bug. Please let know what to provide to report the error correctly. BTW Where do I find the saved files during a shutdown? custom objects?

extension categories vs menu

Hi Friends, As I mentioned in a different mailing list, I'm working on creating a centralized list of all the external Inkscape extensions, which I'll add to the list of tutorials that I've created on my website/forum (https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php). I have them all listed (not uploaded yet), and I'm almost finished categorizing them, as best I can. I'm going to list them according to where I expect they would show up in the current Extensions menu. I think that will make it easier for users to find them. As soon as I finish, I'll probably ask for help (maybe I'll even post the request later in this same thread, because I'm very close to finished), because some of them I don't even understand, and others don't understand well enough to know where they should belong. Plus, many of them could really fit in more than one category. But meanwhile, I'm a little confused about something in the current Extensions menu. I notice that the Stylesheet submenu is separate from the Web submenu. I'm just curious why Stylesheet isn't a submenu *under* the Web category. Can someone explain? Thanks for your help, brynn

Yesterday was SMIL and today is Mesh Gradients

Hi fellow inkscapers, I was amazed to read that inkscape already has Mesh Gradients (since version 0.92) just like Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator got this exact same feature in the version 8 (released in 1998). 20 years ago. But it seems that Mesh Gradients will be removed from the SVG 2.0 specification. My question is WHY? That made me really sad and wondering: isn't there anything we can do to prevent that from happening? Can we make a petition or talk to Mozilla/Chrome/Opera/Vivaldi browser so they can implement this and this feature, as soon as it gets traction, to be kept in the 2.0 spec of SVG technology? Ideas anyone? Is this too unrealistic or we can do something about it? I remember google chrome almost removed SMIL feature from Google Chrome but then the feature got traction and started being used more and more... so they kept it.

Website Testing (upgrades)

Dear Devlopers and Users, The Inkscape Website is going through some upgrades, from python 2.7 to python 3.5 and from django 1.8 to django 1.11. There's a pile of other upgrades since I rebuilt the dependencies from scratch, but these are the main ones. I've deployed the new version to http://inkscape.sandcats.io:8091/en/ and I encourage people to hit the website and test functionality. Try different things and feel free to report issues to the inkscape-webgitlab issues tracker if you can (to keep the mailing list clear) but if you can't issues track, then fallback to emailing here. When ready, we'll hopefully be deploying this new version to a new server too, so it's all moving hopefully forwards. Thanks for your help everyone. Measurement preferences

I work exclusively in millimetres, but Inkscape keeps reverting to pixels. This is extremely annoying, and I can't seem to find any way of *permanently* setting all such measurements to mm. Set default behavior to "No guides"?

Hi everyone, I recently upgraded my operating system (from debian 7 to debian 9) and I'm slowly adapting to the more recent version of Inkscape (0.92.1). One thing I noticed is that the "Guides" are activated by default when I start Inkscape. To deactivate them, I have to go through "Document Properties", select the tab "Guides", and un-check the box "Show guides". My question is---Would there be a way to have these Guides deactivated by default? So I wouldn't have to do this everyt time? Any suggestion would be highly appreciated. Thanks! Pierre

Is PixelSnap extension working for you ?

Hi community ! In inkscape 0.92, Debian testing, I don't manage to make Extension > Modify Path > PixelSnap to work. Not sure if i'm beeing dumb because I don't use this extension regularly. Tried with a minimal 32x32 pixel document, two squares converted to paths, one with fill, one with 1px stroke. Previewing or Applying the extension seem not to change anything. Tried selecting the objects, being in "edit node mode" or not, with and without the nodes selected. Is it working for you in 0.92 ? Thanks for any clues, and have a nice day all ! Victor

weird installation error

Hi all, I recently attempted to install Inkscape. I did not throughly read the documentation, so I ended up installing Inkscape without instaling Xquartz. When the dialog about X11 appeared, I became confused, returned to the website, saw my error, and installed Xquartz. Now when I click to start Inkscape, nothing happens - no dialog to specify the X11 path, nothing, no icons appear. I tried uninstalling Inkscape (dragging to trash, emptying trash) then reinstalling, but I still get no UI nor any option to specify where X11 is. I'm extremely confused on how I can recover from this error state - does anyone have any suggestions? - Greg

Question about finding an object in the SVG code that corresponds to what I see in the GUI but isn't clickable . .

People, I have a PDF that was itself an export from a CAD (DWG) package (which is not accessible anymore). I have imported this PDF file into Inkscape and have successfully deleted most of the objects I don't want in the drawing but there is one, major, obvious object left and I can't click on it to delete it so I thought I might be able to work out what the object is by looking at the SVG code . . but that is nearly 3MB in size . . I attach a JPG of the drawing (I can supply the SVG if someone wants to have a look at it) - the main problem is the white rectangle which looks like an extension of the road. Minor problems are lines and a little rectangle to the right of the white rectangle. The original drawing was all green in that area so it seems those objects have been added on top (there is only one layer in Inkscape). Can anyone think of a way of finding those objects - either in the GUI or by looking at the SVG code so I can delete them? using a group for a clipping path

Hi Friends, It's just come to my attention that it's possible to use a group as a clipping path. Should that be possible? If so, don't the multiple objects have the potential to cause trouble, if the file becomes very large and/or complex? I mean, if nothing else, it certainly has the potential to add unwanted or unneeded weight to the file. Just on observation, it's not possible to edit the clipping path, when a group is used. In my simple test, the green clipping path is only showing around one of the objects in the group. And it's displaced. There's an SVG file attached to this message: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=1160.0 The silly distorted face is a group which is ready to be used to clip the dark blue rectangle. So you can see that it does work to use a group for a clipping path. And if you switch to the Node tool after that (and enable the clip path button), you can see that the smile path is displaced, and is the only part of the group which is showing as the clipping path. Is all this expected behavior? What legitimate purpose is there, for using a group as a clipping path? I've always gone to such pains (apparently) to use a single path for clipping. I guess if a group can be used, then a compound path, with mutliple subpaths could be used as well? I just don't understand why it's possible. Thanks for comments. brynn
