Hi, I'm trying to draw some boxes with pattern fills similar to those we can find in Xfig. If I understood, we have to manually create a pattern by using the option "Objects to Pattern" and after apply to my boxes. The problem is that I'm having problems to create those patterns. Depending on the size of the boxes, the result is very different.... Has anybody tried to draw boxes with those patterns we can find in Xfig? Or know how to do this? (I'm using inkscape 0.44) Thanks, Marco

selecting rectangles making me crazy!

Hi, I'm a new user of Inkscape 0.44.1 as distributed with Debian Etch. I'm very impressed with the features it provides, but some basics are escaping me. I'm working with a postscript file, converted via pstoedit -pta original.ps output.svg I import output.svg into Inkscape with no problem, and the image displays the image and text labels exactly as it should. I need to mark up the image with transparent boxes. I draw the boxes using the rectangle tool. However, I when I try to reselect them it gets very weird. Clicking on a rectangle actually selects a different rectangle, lower on the image than where the mouse is pointing. The other rectangle has a dotted outline (bounding box?) that is many times bigger than the rectangle itself. I managed to fix this before by playing with the snapping options in document properties, but I am not able to repeat that early success. When I open the shapes tutorial I can draw and select boxes normally, and the dotted outlines appear to (almost) exactly match the outline of the rectangles themselves. Please, what am I doing wrong? This is very frustrating, and I'm sure it's something really simple that I'm missing. -- Regards, Tyler Smith

Tablet Tricks?

I got myself a new Tablet and have been playing with it in Inkscape. I really like the calligraphy tool but I think I need practice with the sculpting tool. I wonder what other tricks Inkscape might have for tablets, or even just techniques people have found useful. It would be nice to be able to tune a shape without individually selecting nodes. I imagine something similiar to Photoshops blur tool to manipulate a shape, which might sound like the sculpt tool but is different because it would be indipendent of the nodes. Yeah, I'll do whatever I can. I haven't done any work with linux. Been meaning to install ubuntu one of these days but haven't had a reason. I was wondering if it was still a problem in linux as the wacom driver is different. Of course it may still be a problem, I don't know exactly how these things work. Comparable program tutorials

I was wondering since tutorials are severely lacking in Inkscape. Which program(s) (Illustrator, Coreldraw, ....) is Inkscape the most comparable to in terms of functionality. Because I seen where people have taken for instance Photoshop tutorials and replicated them in the Gimp. Problems loading svg files

Hi I`m using inkscape 0.44 on Ubuntu 6.10 Linux. After saving a normal svg file as 'inkscape svg', this file cannot be loaded anymore. Error-Message: Failed to load the requested file If I save the same file as 'standard svg', it loads without any problems. What's going wrong there? Regards Reinhard

toshiba m7 convertible tablet

Hello, I'm new here. I have a toshiba M7 convertible laptop tablet. In any mode but landscape primary (you flip the screen and can choose to have it in portrait mode to write on like a pad of paper) the tablet input still thinks it is in primary landscape or something and the axis' are all off so when i draw something with the calligraphy tool it is not where the cursor is. it works fine with the mouse. from what i have researched it has to do with inkscape (and the gimp) using the older wacom API as opposed to the newer HID that does not support rotate. Is there a workaround or fix for this? Maybe editing some variable to make it think it is always in portrait mode? I really don't want to have to go back to illustrator, but will have to if I have to turn my whole tablet around backwards to use it with the usb and lan ports all sticking at my stomach. i am using windows xp tablet edition. does the custom linux wacom driver work with screen rotation? i could install linux if i had to. or is it hard coded in the program and have nothing really to do with the wacom driver? Wondering why Ink is running slow.

Hello, I don't really know how to phrase this, on one hand it may sound like I am whining and on the other it's a real issue I experience. If this should be in another list or posted as a bug report, just yell. I think I'll just jump in. The thing : Inkscape 0.45 gets gradually slower and less responsive over a period of time. My system : Old AMD Athlon 1Ghz, 1 Gig RAM, Ample drive space (IDE), Nvidia something or other card, Kubuntu Dapper. The caveat : For some reason or other I have the very real (and seemingly unique) experience with GTK apps all running very slowly -- well the gui response makes them appear to be slow. Apps like Firefox and OOO and Gimp and wxPython stuff and Tomboy, etc, are all painful. Still, I am used to that basic sluggishness. I have been using Inkscape quite a lot in the last week doing icons and other designs and for the first ten minutes or so it's allright. Even fairly complex drawings (stuff all over, many layers, some bitmaps) are not a problem. After that, the refresh rate begins to slow. After about half an hour, it's in the order of seconds, not milliseconds. It's like move 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 re-draw, with big black squares gradually filling-in. I have found that I cannot leave tool dialogs open -- especially the fill/outline one. I must open one, use it and then close or shade it and move it off the canvas area. After 30 mins to 1 hour Inkscape really becomes impossible to use. I cannot select a single node without a long pause as the mouse freezes and then suddenly jumps into life (dragging the node radically). At this point I save my work and close the app. I wait for a couple of minutes and re-start it. All is well for a while. Repeat. BTW - what I am describing is not an illusion of slowness, it really does get slower. Oh yeah, one more thing, when I close Firefox it seems to give Ink a boost in speed but it does not last. So, what's going on? Am I running some processes or other apps that are known to interfere with Inkscape? Is it more of a GTK thing? Is my AMD chip a known culprit? Is my RAM bad perhaps? Dashed rectangle

I guess I have clicked something I shouldnt have! After having used the shapes tools (star, rectangle and circle) for a while, something happens so I only get a dashed rectangle instead of the shape. PostScript fonts print as Courier when Inkscape exports to EPS

When I save a drawing as EPS, and print it, some or all of the PostScript fonts are incorrect, and show as Courier instead. (When I view the EPS in Ghostview on Linux, everything looks fine.) Here are two slightly different cases: 1. Font is Helvetica Narrow Bold: All text items print as Courier. I get a similar result when I run the EPS through Adobe Distiller (which I did just to see what's happening); it reports: Helvetica Narrow-Bold not found, using Courier. Helvetica Narrow-Bold-ISOLatin1 not found, using Courier. 2. Font is Times Bold: First text item prints correctly, others print as Courier. When run through Adobe Distiller, it whinges: Times-Bold-ISOLatin1 not found, using Courier. Note: only one message, not two as above. My messy workaround: ------------------- If I edit the EPS file (diff shown), it works. (I.e. insert an extra dash in the font name wherever it's used, and use the original font name, without the -ISOLatin1 suffix.) 65c65 < /(Helvetica Narrow-Bold-ISOLatin1) /(Helvetica Narrow-Bold) newlatin1font --- > /(Helvetica Narrow-Bold-ISOLatin1) /(Helvetica-Narrow-Bold) newlatin1font 88c88 < /(Helvetica Narrow-Bold-ISOLatin1) findfont --- > /(Helvetica-Narrow-Bold) findfont Is there a better solution to this? inkscape doesn't like my serial wacom tablet

hi, i've been following the thread about inkscape running slow. there was something that the poster said that triggered this email. it had to do with a dialog box going blank. that's the problem i have with the external devices. first inkscape said there was no external devices. i reset the external devices to normal, reset the settings on my tablet and rebooted the machine (w2kSP4,786mb ram,pIII 450mhz processor - and yes it runs the program ;^) - with a serial wacom gd (#1) tablet). when i opened the external device dialog box the wacom puck shows the settings, but when i try to look at the stylus and eraser settings, the box settings disappear and it seems that the function locks up except for being able to exit. i don't remember this being a problem in 0.44. any ideas? oh yeah, it happens in gimp too. dwain -- dwain alford p.o. box 145 winfield, alabama 35594 u.s.a. tele: 205.487.2570 cell: 205.495.5619

Snaping to Objects

Hello, I have a problem regarding the "Snap nodes to Objects" feature. When I created a simple test document, the feature worked as expected. I drew some straight lines and moved them and their ends snapped together. When I tried exactly the same thing in a more complex document (not too complex, a 33kB SVG-File), it didn't work any more, "Snap nodes to Objects" appeared to have no effect at all. The fun part is that I tried copying the objects in question back into a plain document - and then it worked again. Any ideas? Thanks Marc -- Dipl.-Inform. question about eps under inkscape

I tried to export a graphic I created in Inkscape to eps. It worked, sort of. It seemed to trash my gradients, making them solid, and it looked like there was no anti aliasing. IMO a much better improvement of the guides would be colored guides, so they could be distinguishable. To Scale Drawing

I'm using inkscape for crime scene drawing. It works great and is very easy to teach. I have tried to do to scale drawings and been unable to do so. What I'm looking for is 1 inch = 60 inch type feature. I'm fairly certain there is no easy way to do that now. I was wondering if this was a feature that might in enough demand that it maybe included in future releases? If not any ideas on a work around would be great.

Determining the size of selections

I know in the gimp when you use either the rectangle or elliptical selection you are able to see what the size of the selection. Is there a way in inkscape to determine the size of lets say square or circle. Because right now it seems that I am just guessing as to the dimension even with the ruler in use. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Cheap talk?
