How to create a new node at the intersection of 2 straight lines

Hi. Could anyone tell if there's a way to place a new node at the intersection of two straight lines (without converting each line into a shape by adding more nodes, then doing something like path merge/union/intersection on those two shapes etc). Also, would the same procedure work for two beziers splines? Thanks, Jaime

install/un-install and 'libXinerama.1.dylib' problem

Hi all, I hope this is the right place to post this, apologies if not. Happy New Year anyway. I had Inkscape (IS) installed a long while ago and it worked ok for a while. I had some novice but useful results. i am using an G4 iBook 933 OSX 10.4.8 After a longer while it became impossible to open either an old or new file in IS. I uninstalled IS but was unsuccessful in my attempts at re-installing for similar reasons as I have just encountered today. Today I have tried to install IS again, all seemed to go ok, but when I started Inkscape up, it got the Apple X11 programme going and then the IS logo appeared in the dock but nothing else whatsoever. I trashed the IS app and now it won't let me delete it from the Trash, even though nothing is open, and shows a trash error msg as follows: 'The operation cannot be completed because the item "libXinerama.1.dylib" is in use.' Does anyone know what may be going on? What solution might there be? Many thanks regards Gareth

PDF output...

Hi folks, I'm trying to work out a way of integrating Inkscape into my workflow. Indesign CS2 doesn't support SVG import. Saving as PDF from Inkscape seems a wee bit flaky - I used a pattern fill in a couple of places, and that had disappeared when I opened the PDF. The EPS export, of course, doesn't support transparency - I suppose I could 'flatten' the transparency somehow, so it appeared to export - but that seems a lot of work. EPS export also seemed to screw up the fonts, but that's no surprise, and I can export them as curves - but it also lost the pattern fills. PNG export works fine, but then I'm up against all the 'issues' of using bitmaps. Ho, hum. Frustrating. Of all the drawing packages I've tried since switching to the Mac, Inkscape is the most promising - far easier to use than Illustrator and with a similar (but better?) feature set. A 'pukka' OS X version would probably answer the PDF export problem, since printing to PDF on the Mac works so well - I often use it where other export methods fall down. I must find a way around this issue - I'm b*gg*r*d if I'm going back to fighting with Illustrator when I need a drawing. Phil

I may have found a bug...

...But I'm not sure - it may just be me not understanding how the package works. I can create new layers (apparently - at least the dialog appears and I can type a new layer name in it), move stuff to other layers and that sort of thing, but I can't open up the layers dialog - CTRL- SHIFT-L does nothing at all as far as I can see. Also, is there any way to lock the contents of a layer? If I go to Global Inkscape Preferences, I can check the 'Select only within current layer' box, but even if I then go to the layers menu and select 'Switch to layer above', the objects on the layer I've just moved from are still selectable. Apropos letter spacing

Could the alt modifier key not be hardcoded for that function, i.e. customizable as already done for some other functions? Reason: the alt key is used for accented characters on a Mac, hence not usable as a modifier for people with native languages using those accented characters. This leads to impossibility to use the letter spacing function.

please test the proposed perspective extension

We have a new Perspective extension in our patch tracker: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1600298&group_id=9… It's very useful potentially, but for some reason, I can't make it work properly, although it reportedly works for the author and another user. I would appreciate if more people could try it out and report their results. Note that to use it, you will need to install Numeric Python: http://numpy.scipy.org (in addition to regular Python). To install the extension, place the inx and py file from perspective_v0.3.tgz into your extensions directory. Please share your experience - thanks! -- bulia byak Inkscape. Dear Inkscape Developers, THANK YOU so much for creating this amazing program! For a long time I have wanted to have the capabilities of something like Adobe Illustrator but I could never justify the cost for an occasional use. I just discovered Inkscape and within a few hours I was able to do useful work with it (well- creating holiday greeting cards, if that's useful!) I'm running on Windows XP, generating a PS output file and converting that to PDF with Ghostscript for laser and inkjet print. It looks great. All the built-in features I've tried work smoothly and I was particularly impressed by the ease of use, and output quality of the built-in bitmap-to-vector converter. People, Saving as: - eps - produces usable but not great output - odg - does not seem to work? - pdf - produces very rough output? I would like to output directly to PDF or to consolidate pages in Open Office and then export to PDF - is there improvements to these output formats? Thanks for nice software! Blur Breaks on Export

Ok, so I have this strange tendency to answer my own questions shortly after I post them, but I really needed that image, so I figured out how to alleviate the symptom. I think my last post still showed some kind of rendering bug. The reason why I have the crazy shapes at the edge of the drawing is because when you export the drawing, it cuts things off where it sees that the edge should be, ignoring the blur. This should be fixed. An auto shadow/glow tool would be fun too. Perhaps I should go file some bugs. -Brian

I'm not sure how I would report this as a bug, but I have got this SVG in which the blur never exports correctly to bitmap. It always shows an artifact in the blur, and I can't tell exactly what is causing it, becasue it only shows up after the export. I am using Inkscape 0.45+devel, built Dec 14 2006 on WinXP. -Brian

Postscript fonts not being recognized

I'm running Inkscape v0.44.1 on Windows 2000. Recently I installed several adobe postscript fonts and Inkscape is not recognizing them. I have Scribus installed on this machine as well and it recognizes all the new postscript fonts. If I run notepad.exe I can see the postscript fonts as well so I'm pretty sure they're installed correctly but I just can't seem to get Inkscape to see them. Any suggestions? Also by not recognize I mean when I open Inkscape's font selector I don't see the new postscript fonts. Thanks, Kevin

Bug Hunt for 0.45

Hi all, We're ready to move into the bug fixing portion of the release. Traditionally, we specify a point target for us to reach, and award us points based on the severity of the bug: 3, 6, or 9 points for low, medium, and high. But this time, to encourage work on old bugs, lets give double points to fixes for any bugs that have been open for a year or more. Bug Hunt Goal: 300 points Current: 0 points Low: 3 - 6 pts Med: 6 - 12 pts High: 9 - 18 pts We especially need testers (and bug fixers) for Windows and OSX. A lot of bugs have accumulated that only show on those platforms, so they are difficult to test. If you are a Windows or OSX user, you too can be a big help, simply by browsing the bug tracker and see if you can reproduce the bug, and then add a comment on the bug one way or the other. Introduction - and help!

Hello folks, My name's Phil. I'm a 'house-husband' these days, though until June I was a low-temperature physicist, working in the research labs at Lancaster University. My wife and I had this long-term agreement that when she got promoted to Professor, I would 'retire', run the household, look after the kids, etc. And lo and behold, she did, so I did! Best move I ever made! When I'm not cooking, cleaning, washing or acting as the kids' taxi service, I'm involved in a variety of projects for a variety of people requiring me to produce drawing and lay out pages. Page layout is almost all done in Indesign CS2, but, since switching from PC to Mac I've (thus far) dismally failed to find a drawing package that doesn't try to fight back. I'm a fairly recent (autumn 05) switcher from PC to Mac (dual 2GHz PowerMac). There's only one thing about my PC which I miss, and that's Xara (I used Xara right from it being called 'Xara Studio' up to the name change to 'Xara Xtreme'). Xara Ltd are (or were?) supposed to be sponsoring an open source version of Xtreme to run on the Mac, but there doesn't seem to be any progress - I suspect that the advent of Macs which can run Windows has removed some/most of the impetus behind this. The only thing I don't like about my Mac is the lack of a decent, usable, drawing package. I don't want to change to an Intel Mac (yet), and even if/when I do, I really don't want to run Windows on it - I started using a Mac to get away from Windows (sorry, to any/all the Windows fans here - I just got fed up with it!)! So I want a drawing package that runs under OS X. Illustrator is so clunky it's untrue - I *can* use it, but fighting it to get it to do what I want robs me of all my creativity; Canvas X is a bug-fest; Eazydraw doesn't have enough features and is too 'eazy'; etc; etc. I've just downloaded the X11 version of Inkscape. So far so good but... The text on things like rulers is so tiny that I can't read it. Is there any way to make it bigger? I've trawled through the document setup and preferences and can't find a way to do it. At the moment it makes using it *almost* impossible. My screen isn't exactly huge, but neither is it tiny - it's an Apple 20" Cinema Display. The 'tooltips' appear under the Dock (which I usually keep on the LHS of the screen), unless I undock the toolbar, in which case the tooltips appear *under* the toolbar: AARRGGHH!!! Either way, they're unreadable. Probably won't matter once I get the hang of the package, but for a newbie, it's a PITA! The size of objects seem to change as one changes the thickness of their outline - seems odd to me - it makes aligning things a bit 'hit and miss' if you then go back and edit them later. Admittedly, Xara had a similar (but not identical) issue - it's the one and only area where I think Illustrator is superior. Thanks, Phil I used to earn a living, now I have a life!

Inkscape and GPU

Hi list, Does inkscape depend of how fast my GPU is? From what I understand GPU allows for hardware matrix/vector calculations and vector graphics is all about those. But does inkscape use the GPU or does it use CPU rather? I heard Macromedia Flash depends on GPU. Karol

The survey is terribly written: it doesn't account for individual graphic artist work against a set team of graphical developers. I do not know of an Open-Source equivalent to Adobe bridge (which I haven't used in a multi-user environment), so I suppose a point can be made against OSS provisions for large-scale work (e.g. vector design -> color/texture providers -> layout implementation -> content management of some sort) at present. However, for single-man jobs, it has been me experience with OSS user base that they are, quite simply, more aware of extended abilities of the software toolset in their disposal than most users of "well locked up" proprietary stuff. Naturally, the preceeding argument is made about college kids doing web-design. When it comes to digital artists of highest caliber, there is no question that their experitise would be honorable regardless of which package they choose for themselves. I'm definitely interested in seeing the results of the survey, mostly due to the fact that no single good conclusion can come out of it. The "practical exercise" section of the questionaire is a complete joke that ought to take less than 30 seconds to finish INCLUDING the loading times of GIMP splash screen and initial "deep thought" phase of Inkscape. Last question: am I the only one of the opinion that most if not all OSS, graphic or not, has better documentation given out for free than most of the fancy (read: expensive) packages provide for extra dough? -ilya.

I am trying to answer some severe critics from bryce and mental on my questionnaire: 1. For getting a larger sample size, be sure that I am posting my questionnaire not only on an Inkscape mailing list but also eg in an Adobe forum. 2. I didn't take Scribus, because its targeting mostly people active in print 3. its "just" a survey for my master thesis and it would go beyond the scope to consider all proprietary and OS packages available. 4. science is always distorted and subjective! 5. the questionnaire is only a part for verifying my thesis, I will also use other research methods for getting answers. 6. I am further using ISO 9126, the standard for software testing 7. A research under a scientific aspect has to set up a hypothesis and verify it. I don't know if the answer to my hypothesis will be yes or no, so one shouldn't derive that I am for or against OS. To let you know, I am a great supporter of OS and so it came to my mind as a professional user of graphics software why programs like Inkscape and Gimp are not widely in use compared to e.g. Photoshop or Illustrator! So how would it sound to you if the hypothesis claims: "Inkscape is mature for a professional workflow, so it isn't widespread and this is because it's free"! Anyway, I am glad to get feedback!!! It is hard to stay neutral on that matter, and I'll try to rephrase my question in the survey.
