saving palette settings and random tree positining

I really like the new palette at the bottom of my screen. But..., I noticed that Inkscape does not remember my Palette settings after I have quit Inkscape. Is that intentional? Another question: Why does the random tree (as in effects) always appear (at least in my latest CVS inkscape version) at the top left corner *above* the page boundaries, instead of the center of the page. The latter would IMO be more user friendly. Finally: When I select to fill an object with a radial gradient, Inkscape always selects to have the full transparency at the borders of the object and the none-transparency at the center of the object. That is fine, but often I just need to have it the other way around. What I do it manually edit the radial gradient to get it my way. It there a 'one-click' way to quickly reverse the gradient? These are really minor issues, but any advice is highly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there, I am extremely curious to know how to resolve a challenge posted in Tavjongs Inkscape book: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/ch19s01.html I really love his book, it is my (the?) ultimate guide to Inkscape. I still don't know how to recreate the spiral, though, and I can't wait anymore, I *have* to know it *now*, right now :) BTW, there is an inkscape unrelated issue with this list, namely that there is a lot of spam in the inkscape-user list. I am sure I am not the first one commenting on this, so forgive me. What is the best way of dealing with it? Thanks. Gilberto

easy way to transform svg to ps and to pdf

We all know that you currently cannot "save" a pdf or ps file with transparency/gradients, but we know that you can 'print' transparency/gradients by selecting the print as bitmap. The resulting PS/PDF is obviously not vector oriented anymore, but from a pragmatic point of view that doesn't matter. I use this 'trick' from the command line inkscape options to quickly transform multiple svg files into pdf files. Just take the following lines and put them in a file. Make them executable (chmod 755, at least for linux/unix platforms). And then call it svg2pdf . It works fine and I find it very useful. If you use one argument, it will create a file tmp.ps, which you can easily transform in a pdf file using ps2pdf. If you use 2 arguments, the first one is DPI and the second the svg file. How to translate Inkscape

Hi, i'm an adobe illustrator user but interessed in inkscape for months. I'd like to update inkscape's french translation to make it a little bit more professionnal (some expressions are quite childish in my opinion). Hi everyone, This is a big thank you to everyone working on inkscape (and scribus too). I've just started to work with inkscape and scribus and the results are fantastic. I've just gotten better results from them than Illustrator, Photoshop and Imageready produced. I've been using Adobe for a decade and using Inkscape for a few weeks. To experiment I used an .eps that was produced using Adobe Illustrator. It had been sent to me by a designer, I had to generate images for the web. Last week, on my Mac, Illustrator wouldn't open the eps file! I used Cenon to open the eps and saved as SVG. When I opened it in Illustrator the paths were out of whack and the fill colours were gone. (This could be the fault of Cenon but Illustrator should open it's own files.) I coloured the solids and saved as png using "save for web" options. The overall result was better than the versions sent by the designer but the colours are flatter than the original eps and there is an obvious halo on the edges beside the transparent field. The results were OK. I made various copies of the image using Illustrator, Photoshop and Imageready trying to improve them. This took about three hours. Today, on FreeBSD/KDE, Inkscape wouldn't open the eps file. (the web site says it does eps! It wouldn't open .ai either) I used Scribus to open the eps and saved as SVG. When I opened it in Inkscape the fill colours were missing in some places but because the paths were correct re-colouring the solids took very little time. I exported as png. The result is gorgeous. All the colours are exactly the same as the original and the edges beside the transparent field are smooth without haloing. Side by side, in comparison with the others, they look great and the others look awful! This took about half an hour. How much better can it get? thanks to everyone who has put their time and effort into this project, you've made wonderful software. malcolm

Printing in OSX

Hi everyone, I am using version 0.43 on OSX 10.4 with Xcode 2.2 tools and was happily printing from Inkscape with pipeline " | Canon i860 " when it quit working. I haven't done much to Inkscape, but, did replace my Fink with latest version and I occasionally tweak my X window.app. Can't remember if any thing coincided with the failure of Inkscape to print. I am using preview in this emergency, but, don't care to rely on this path for long, preview won't print transparencies. Thank you for any help Dan Daniel Culver danielculver@...107...

Poor performance browsing remote file systems using save as etc.

Hiya guys, this is my first post. I have read the DOCs and tried a google for this info. I am using inkscape on both MacOSX and Win32 for my PhD thesis diagrams. Its excellent, all credit to you guys for producing an excellently usable vector package. My comment is it is extremely slow (up to 15s to display the contents of a directory) when using the save as or open or any file handling through the GUI. In fact its so slow I use the OS finder/explorer as much as possible (1 -- 2s to display) to get about giving inkscape direct paths via cut and paste. Is this a known issue? Is it caused by trying to generate thumbnails for each file? I am using 0.43 at the moment. Cheers, and hope this hasn't been addressed elsewhere. Matthew Swabey
