Drop Shadows

I see in the Help file 'tips' that blur drop shadows are not yet implemented. But that I should read the [[usr]/share/extensions/inkscape-shadow.README file. There is not such file that I can find in the Linux file tree. I do see .sh files and a svg_dropshadow script. Can anyone tell be how to do blurred drop shadows in Inkscape now, in version .41? I'm new to Inkscape and Scribus, coming from InDesign CS and Paint Shop Pro 9. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. NEW: flowed text UI

* Inkscape now features a complete support for flowed text: o Creation of flowed text is simple. Just drag anywhere on canvas (except over an existing text object) using the Text tool to create a rectangular frame. After you release mouse, the frame is created and you can type text into it. o Resizing a frame is as simple as dragging the handle in the bottom right corner to change its width or height. Drag with Ctrl to restrict resizing to horizontal or vertical. Such resizing can be done by Text tool, Node tool, or any shape tool; however, only Text tool also highlights the frame border when a flowed text is selected. o Transforming a flowed text is straightforward. It is selected as a single object including both the frame and the text, and can be moved, scaled, rotated etc. * Dragging with the Text tool creates a regular flowed text object whose frame is internal (does not appear as a standalone object on canvas) and rectangular. You can, however, create a different kind of flowed text: linked flowed text that can use as its frame any existing shape, including non-rectangular ones. It can also use a chain of frames, with the text flowing from one frame to the next one in chain. o To create a linked flowed text, select a text object and one or more shapes or paths, then use the Flow into Frame command (Alt+W) in the Text menu. When two or more shapes or paths were selected, they become a chain of frames for this flowed text. o A linked flowed text is in some ways similar to a clone. It will reflow when the frame is changed, but it is a separate object that can be moved away and transformed independently from its frame. As with a clone, when a linked flowed text is selected, you can use Shift+D in Selector to jump to its first frame (this is useful if the frame is invisible or locked). o Statusbar description of a selected object will identify regular text, flowed text, and linked flowed text as different kinds of objects. * Full on-canvas editing of flowed text is now possible. Just click in any flowed text object with text tool and type - the text will reflow automatically within its frame. Letterspacing and linespacing adjustments (but not manual kerns) work in flowed text as well. * The Unflow Text command (Alt+Shift+W) converts a flowed text into a single-line regular text object, cutting its link to its frame. * Another command, Convert to Text, also converts flowed text to a regular text object, but does this preserving appearance (i.e. all lines are kept where they were). The resulting object does not reflow anymore but it is still editable. Saving as .ai doesn't work

Hi, when trying to save an Inkscape file as Adobe Illustrator .ai, I get the error message saying that the file cannot be saved. What am I doing wrong, or is this some kind of bug? I am using the "Save as ..." option, with .AI selected (Inkscape 0.40). cleaner markup SVG ellipse rect polygon?

I realise Inkscape inherited a lot of code from Sodipodi and Sodipodi was using SVG as a means to an end rather than trying to produce clean markup that could be easily edited manually but what I would like to know is if there are any plans or exisiting request for Inkscape to use the standard ellipse rect and polygon tags? (If I could think of something to search for I might stand I better chance of finding an existing RFE but a quick skim of the first few pages didn't turn up much). I grabbed a nightly build and produce a simple file with a Rectangle, an Ellipse and a Star but when I inspected the markup all were represented in the file using Paths. (From a techincal point of View it is interesting that Convert Object to Path doesn't actually convert anything.) I realise the Inkscape ellipse supports more functionality than can be represented by an ellipse but I think using the tags where possible would produce much cleaner markup which is very useful to people like me who like to obsessively tweak their images and carefully hand edit the markup. iiim or something used in FC3 needs Ctrl+Shift+Space to switch input methods. But this interferes with inkscape's key bindings. is there any way to resolve this situation. Currently, I have been typing somewhere else and pasting into inkscape. Thanks Bal

effects menu

I run debian unstable. I installed inkscape 0.41 from the official packages and from sources around 10 times now. And I always get the same window at the beginning: The failed extensions have been skipped. Inkscape will continue to run normally but those extensions will be unavailable. For details to troubleshoot this problem, please refer to the error log located at: /home/sunny/.inkscape/extension-errors.log one by one i found all the dependencies until I have left two of them: Extension "Grid" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: plugin location: path string: grid Extension "GIMP Gradients" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency:: type: plugin location: path string: gimpgrad On the other hand I don't get to see the effects menu, so i have no effects at all ¿is it because of these two extensions? I followed http://www.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?GettingEffectsWorking or tried because in inkscapre prefs, misc, i don't have "Enable script effects". I set it manually in preferences.xml adding show-effects-menu="1" to no effect. I installed python, python-xml, perl, libxml-xql-perl. I did ./configure --with-perl --with-python and recognized them perfect. ¿am I missing something? I noticed this two are the only one plugins out of all listed in the extensions directory. Hi! I'm experiencing reproducible crashes of both inkview and "inkscape -s" when going forth and back in a number of files. "top" output shows that the process is eating more and more memory (also when displaying files that have been displayed before!); finally it crashes. This is Inkscape 0.41 on NetBSD 2.0/i386. Is this a known bug? I was unable to find it in the sf.net bug tracker. Cheers, Christoph

I have imported and traced a favorite Dilbert cartoon with inscape-CVS (as of today). The source image was of marginal quality, so the lines need quite a lot of cleanup. It shouldn't be too hard to adjust, and the result will be well worth the effort. The cartoon strip has three square panels. With each panel there are elements such as characters, desks, etc. I removed any shading from the source bitmap, so its just line art. - How do I break the monolithic traced path into separate objects for each square panel? - Within each panel, how do I snip and cut each character/prop element to be on its own path? Both of these operations figuratively involve defining a few construction lines and saying 'cut here'. Is there a literal way to use this concept with the cut, union and difference tools? Thanks, I think once I have the elements separated, my existing experience with inkscape will be sufficient to finish.

Inkscape-0.41 develops make errors

Hi all I'm trying to compile and install Inkscape-0.41 from source on Linux. Quick question about multiline...

Hey all... So, I think that I have some of the basics for flow charting down. I have one decided not to use the flow text as it seemed too difficult to work with right now. I am currently using a combination of a text object and a shape from the openclipart program to make my shapes. Now I have run into the case where I can not seem to get a carriage return in my text box's. I have included the file, since XML is nice and small, so that you may see what I mean. Several of my decision points could be expanded into two lines. I do not want to have to make generic decision points for single and two line entities. Can anybody give me a little assistance here or have I explained this in such a perverse way that I have confused everybody? Justace

*PLEASE FORWARD AND POST LIBERALLY* June 10, 2005 UTC — Release 0.14 of the Open Clip Art Library (www.openclipart.org) is now available for download on-line as an individual package consisting of 3415 images submitted by over 200 artists from around the globe. The project has progressed much this month on the future core of the Open Clip Art Library, the Document Management System (DMS) and more infrastructure has been implemented for the website due to user-demand. In addition to the aggregration of developer blogs at Planet OpenClipArt (http://planet.openclipart.org/), the project is now using the freedesktop.org provided bugzilla bug tracker (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?product=openclipart.org) to focalize feature requests and bug reports related to clip art, dms, the website, and other concerns. And, in response to people having difficulty contacting developers, there is now a contact form on the main project page. With regards to the Open Clip Art Library's growing release size, there is now an SVG-only package. And, for all those Windows users out there, the project is now providing a Windows installer that supports 40 languages and allows users to install and uninstall versions of the library package safely and securely. Now is the time to contribute artwork to the library and help develop the infrastructure which allows for easy clip art distribution. All summer the project is looking for summer themed artwork. What a great time to get out of the heat and lend a hand to the ongoing development for the project. Or, go outside and get some inspiration for making some artwork for submission.
