Another similar issue: unicode seems to be broken on the latest snapshot. All unicode characters automatically get moved to the top of the page, and it is impossible to move them from that location. Sorry for the continuous stream of problems. -- Richard Kowalczyk <richk@...489...>

Snapshot Problems

I needed some of the recent improvements - specifically, flowed text and the ability to change the format of individual characters, so I downloaded and installed a snapshot. However, I am having problems with files converted from ps. The import that worked find on the 0.41 release is not importing properly with the snapshots I have downloaded (inkscape-20050429-1520, inkscape-20050501-1240). Specifically, the text and the path's are no longer "lining up". I attached a screenshot of the 0.41 release of inkscape (on the left) and the snapshot (on the right), as well as the svg file. The intermediate skencil file looks fine (in skencil). As a side question, is it a bad idea to email this list with problems like this (snapshots)? Should i file a bug instead? English tutorials converted

May 1st, 2005 — Thanks to the active help from the community, all English tutorials that we had in SVG are now converted to DocBook! From within Inkscape, they are still available as fully editable SVG which you can play with, but having the DocBook source makes it easy to produce any other formats or renditions automatically. In particular, all converted tutorials are now availble in HTML, linked from our Documentation page. What's next? We have several of the tutorials translated into several languages. simple pattern fill won't print, but it shows up in Inkscape

Hello all, I'm getting the hang of Inkscape after using it for a few months. All is going well, but I'm hung up on a problem with pattern fills. Here's the situation: I'm running Inkscape .41 on a Debian Linux system (unstable). I have a document with a simple cross-hatch pattern fill. (I actually borrowed it from this helpful tutorial: http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/samples/patterns.shtml) The pattern fill shows up properly in Inkscape, but it's not visible when I print. I don't think it's a problem with my printer driver, as I've printed both to the actual printer (Lexmark E210) as well as the generic CUPS-PDF printer, which generates a PDF file. In both cases, the shapes in which the fill should appear are simply white. I've attached the file--it's only a few KB. If anyone is able to help, I'd much appreciate it. CVS Build fail

You really ought to link to them from /win32-snap and /download.php I converted the transparent stop to an opaque white stop. The gradient now shows up in Photoshop CS and GSview 4.6/GS 8.14. However, as you noted yesterday, the repeating nature of the gradient is lost, so I just get purple and a lot of white instead of purple, white, purple. The text still fails to show up in Word 2003 and Publisher 2003. Obviously a bug in Office's EPS import. Perhaps it doesn't handle PostScript Level 3. This is annoying, since I need to use the logo in Word and Publisher documents. [Later] I had the bright idea of finding an external tool to convert EPS to WMF (Windows Metafile). ImageMagick can read WMFs, but can't write them. PsToEdit converted the EPS to WMF. A more-or-less correct preview of the WMF shows up in the File Open dialog launched by Word's Insert > Picture > From File, but the entire picture renders as a blank white rectangle. Aaargh! [Later Still] I played further with pstoedit after I discovered the EMF format (Windows Enhanced Metafiles). "pstoedit -f wemfc" kind of works. It generates an image that Publisher can display. Plus, it scales up when you zoom in, unlike imported EPS. However, the gradient is gone, leaving me with a black outlines around white text. Worse still, the colors in the drawing are inverted. Royal blue has become pale green; lavender -> pale blue; pink -> mid blue. Other tools show the EMF exactly the same way, so this is some funkiness of pstoedit. /George

[This bounced twice yesterday. Third time's the charm.] I created a logo where I have a text outline filled with a gradient. Looks great. Unfortunately, when I convert it to EPS, the gradient fill is lost. The text outline shows up as empty in both Microsoft Word and Photoshop. Is this a limitation of EPS itself or of Inkscape's EPS convertor? (I'm sure I've seen gradients in PostScript documents, so I suspect the latter.) Some fonts simply don't work in Inkscape. For example, "Modern No. 20" is rendered as Arial. It's a TrueType font and otherwise unexceptionable. problem with the text tool and the font size after importing a svg document

Hi, I have a weird problem, which might be a bug actually, but I am not sure. Maybe anybody can help me. The problem: When I load document curves.svg (which you can download from my pc, sorry, but it kind of the only example I have). do a wget to get it: wget http://volition.wustl.edu/curves.svg Then, load it and try to draw some text anywhere. If you use the text tool and type, the letters will be larger than anything on the canvas. As you can see, no matter where you try to type text, the letters will be absurdly big. So I have to scale down these supersize letters into something around .03 pt. That is the size of the letters that I managed to create (the "200 ms") for example. The document curves.svg was made with pstoedit to transform a postscript file into svg. That transformation worked fine! How come that the font size of letters becomes so unusual after I import the file curves.svg? How can I solve this? Is this a bug, or an error in the loaded file curves.svg. Thank you very much. Inkscape and Inkview for presentations

I have been thinking about using Inkscape and Inkview as a replacement for powerpoint (one of the few reasons to reboot to Windows). I decided to give it a try recently, and it is great in some respects, and lacking in others. I thought I would describe my process, and some of the issues I am running into, and see if anyone has any suggestions. The process: (1) I create one, or multiple template slides (in Inkscape), that have placeholders for the title, substitle, and content (although this could easily be generalized). (2) I create a text file (called the outline file) which describes the slides, including titles, content, and the template file to use for each slide. (3) I have a python script which uses the template files and the outline file to create svg files for each slide. (3a) The title and subtitle are easy - they are just inserted into the proper placeholder in the template svg. (3b) The content, which includes equations, is more complicated. It is run through LaTex, and converted to svg, then inserted into the template svg. The conversion process is LaTex -> dvips -> pstoedit -> skconvert, which provides an svg file that I can process to get the text part, and insert into the template svg. (4) I can edit each slide svg file in Inkscape to make any changes necessary. (5) View slides with Inkview. My questions: (a) Is there a better way to do this? I could do everything in LaTex, but I then I lose the ability to tweak the result, such as moving pictures around, or changing font sizes, etc., like I have in powerpoint, or Inkscape. (b) Is anyone else using Inkscape for presentations? Interested in using it? (c) Step 3b is pretty poor right now - I am still working on it, but the conversion process basically creates a seperate text element for every letter. I can do some processing to improve on this, but it is very inelegant. Anyone have a better idea? (d) Also in step 3b, I am losing some greek letters (but not all) in the conversion from LaTex to svg. I have not tracked the cause of this down yet.

make fails on cvs-install

I downloaded from CVS, ran autogen and configure. But I'm afraid I´m running into lots of dependancies again.... Autogen compained about missing intltool, but that I could install from Suse CD. After that configure complains about error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape but on my Suse 9.2 box /usr/lib/libgc.a /usr/lib/libgc.la /usr/lib/libgc.so /usr/lib/libgc.so.1 /usr/lib/libgc.so.1.0.1 is installed. Latest Nightly Build Problem

Last night I downloaded the latest Autopackage nightly build (Linux). The installation process quit with an error (sorry, I don't have the specific error message onhand) when I tried to install it. I don't know if this was due to a problem on my machine or a result of an error in the process of creating the autopackage build, but I thought I'd mention it on the offchance the package is bad. Or something. Anyway... does anyone know where I can get the build *before* this latest one? :) Christopher B. Wright (wrightc@...537...)

CMYK-colors wrong

Hi there, I have an CMYK eps-file here and when I import it in inkscape the colors are completely wrong (too colorfull, obviously not properly converted to rgb). When I change the CMYK values by hand, the colors are too dull. I always thought that Inkscape would support CMYK? If so how about an option like in Illustrator, to set the actual color format and the one of the imported/exported file? Tutorial conversion

We started to convert Inkscape tutorials into DocBook, with SVG and HTML (and potentially other formats) generated automatically by XSLT stylesheets. The Basic tutorial in English was the first to be converted; here it is in HTML: http://inkscape.org/doc/basic/tutorial-basic.html (obviously there's no interactivity in HTML, but at least it's now printable). If you want to help, pick your favorite tutorial (drop a note to the devel list first, to make sure it's not yet taken), check out the doc-docbook module from our CVS and follow the instructions in the file README to convert it into DocBook and extract illustrations as separate SVG files. This is simple work but it will be great help to the project, since it will make much easier to update tutorials, translate them into other languages, and write new ones. Oh, and if you want to edit or translate or tutorial, please wait until it's converted and work with the DocBook version. (Better yet, convert it yourself :) -- bulia byak Inkscape. Units of coordinates

Hi, In Inkscape 0.41 on Suse 9.2, I always set the rulers and everything I can find on measurement to millimeters. Only the cursor coordinates, in the bottom left corner of the main window, is shown in some other unit (100 mm = 125 units). Is it possible to set this to mm's too?
