Trivial information, for the most part... but after playing around with Inkscape all last week I made the decision to use it as my primary webcomic drawing tool: http://ubersoft.net It's not on the same level as Illiad making the switch, but still... it seems to hold up fairly well in my "production environment." Cannot import vector images?

Hi! I just downloaded and installed Inkscape (for Windows, my Linux desktop is currently running a slightly outdated distribution, so I don't think I can install it there until I upgrade). However, I am quite amazed that I cannot seem to be able to import other vector graphics formats, just bitmap formats. Is it supposed to be able to import vector graphics, and there's just something wrong with my install (it did complain about not finding Perl, even though I do have Cygwin with Perl installed)? I have a couple of vector images in Micrografx Windows Draw format (.drw) that I'd like to convert to SVG. I exported it in Draw to all the vector graphics format I could find, but Inkscape didn't seem to understand any of them, the file selector just listed raster graphics formats. -- \\// Peter - http://www.softwolves.pp.se/ I do not read or respond to mail with HTML attachments.

NEW: HSV => HSL

* In the color selector widget, the HSV tab (Hue, Saturation, Value) is replaced by HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness). The HSL color space is similar to HSV but is more convenient because it better reflects the intuitive understanding of what "saturation" and "lightness" are: o In HSL, the Saturation component always goes from fully saturated color to the equivalent gray (in HSV, with V=max, it goes from saturated color to white, which is counterintuitive). o The Lightness in HSL always spans the entire range from black through the chosen hue to white (in HSV, it only goes half that way, from black to the chosen hue). Stroking imported bitmaps

Can't quite sort this out. I'd like to import (or open) a bitmap -- say, a rectangular jpg photo -- add a stroke, round the corners, etc. It's pretty clear right away that the imported bitmap won't accept a stroke. I haven't found a way to make Inkscape think of it as an object. It seems to be permanently an "image". The next thought I had was to draw the "frame" I wanted (rounded rectangle) on another layer, convert to path, select the rectangle and bitmap together, and Join. No go. The bitmap is still not an 'object'. So far I wasn't surprised. While I'm not visualizing it completely, I know that vector-based tools are reluctant to embrace bitmaps. There's a negotiation layer full of assumptions, and most just stay away. Most recently I tried to fill my rectangle frame with an object-to-pattern made from the jpg. This came very close, but the fill made arbitrary tiling assumptions and refused to start at 0,0. I'm sure I'm over-thinking this. But it would be a boon to use the same, consistently stroked frame for stuff I compose in Inkscape *and* the occasional photo. Any ideas? What am I missing? Snap to objects?

Hi Inkers, is there any way to make objects snap to each other in inkscape? E.g. when I move a square close to another one, the corners would get magnetic. Or when I want to draw a vertical between two parallel lines the start and the end of the vertical should snap to the parallels. I have found nothing in the settings and using guides can not always be an suitable substitute. And usualy I can't work with grids, for I'm working with scans of hand drawings which I "vectorize". select arrowheads?

Hi! I've done a very simple drawing: a straight line (a rect) and then I changed the stroke style to add an ending arrowhead. Now I can select the rect (it is an object) and I can do things with it: change its color, resize it, etc. But I'm not yet figuring how to select the arrowhead so that I can, for example, change its color to match the rest of the line. I drag, click, shift-click, etc. to no avail. Anyone can give me a hint? In Adobe Illustrator once you add an arrowhead to a line, it is added as another object, though initially grouped. How is this dealt with in inkscape? I'm using inkscape-0.41 on FreeBSD-4.11 (i386). Thanks in advance, Fernan

Scaling problems when printing with 0.41_1

Hi, I'm using linux operating system, suse9.2 distro, I started with inkscape with the version inkscape-0.40-1.static.i686.rpm and everthing worked fine but when I updated to inkscape-0.41-1.static.i686.rpm The printings, in bitmap postscript, of my previous, and new documents (A4, landscape) are no longer good. What seems to happen is that the drawing is scaled up and does not completely fits in the page. Thanks, António Tomé. P.s. Exporting to PNG/Cropping question

I'm trying to reproduce an effect I was able to create way back when I was using a program called Photo>Graphics on the OS/2 platform. Essentially, it could be set up so that when you defined a page size and then exported to a raster graphic (in this case PNG), any part of the image that exceeded the page boundaries was automatically cropped. Saved SVG doesn't match GUI

[No luck searching archives on this.] The Inkscape document I've been working on for a few hours does not save what's on my display, either in Inkscape or plain SVG. It's instead saving-off a mystery document with artifacts from prior versions of my document. Bitmaps export fine. I've also copied over my visible elements to a fresh doc, but it suffers the same problem. Saving worked properly for awhile, but at some point it got confused -- perhaps when I briefly opened a second instance of Inkscape. This doc is naturally intended to be my master, so I'm worried. Does anyone know a way to recover from this? I'm gonna keep this doc open until I find a solution, unless Inkscape crashes first. [Ubuntu Debian, Linux 2.6.8, i386, Inkscape .40] Thanks. Introduction

I just signed up to the list today. I've been testing Inkscape privately and am impressed enough with it that I plan to be using it heavily. This is described as the "User's List" on Sourceforge, as opposed to the "Developer's List," and since I'm not a developer this seems like the right one for me. But I have a question: what is appropriate Inkscape discussion here, and what is not? What I mean is: it may be entirely appropriate to ask questions about how to use the program, the best way to optimize it, sharing tricks and tips... and it may *not* be appropriate to request features or critique how some features are implemented. I'd like to participate responsibly and can't find any guidelines that outline what the limits of conversation on this list are (there were not that were immediately obvious to me, at any rate -- I may have overlooked them). At any rate, I plan on using Inkscape (on a Mepis partition) quite heavily and am moving from CorelDraw (on a Windows partition), which is what I've been using for the last four years or so. NEW: Unsetting paint and painting clones

New in CVS: * Unsetting paint and painting clones: Both Fill and Stroke tabs of the Fill&Stroke dialog have a new mode button, "Unset paint" (with a question mark icon). Pressing this button removes the fill or stroke property from the style of selected objects, which has the visible effect of painting them black. The usefulness of this is that clones of such an object can redefine the unset fill or stroke, which means you can have clones painted differently from their original and from each other. Just use the Fill&Stroke dialog on a clone to assign it any kind of fill or stroke paint (flat color, gradient, etc.). Moreover, you can unset paint on some of the objects in a group, clone the group, and paint the clone; only those objects with unset paint will accept the paint, while others will retain their original paint.

Inkscape for AI users: a revert war :)

Recently the wiki user Kwixson has significantly expanded and rewritten the "Inkscape for AI users" document on our wiki. Some of his edits seemed strange to me, and I proposed my variants. Unfortunately we could not reach a consensus, so after several mutual reverts we decided to post here and ask for the help and judgement from the community. The latest revision with our extensive comments is here: http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?IllustratorUsers Below I briefly list the things I disagree with. 0. To begin, I really appreciate the input on this document from the user who obviously knows AI well. This is some kind of expertise which I personally lack, so I would not be able to write such a document all by myself. Obviously it must be written from an AI user's point of view and use AI terminology and concepts. 1. However, Kwixson's approach seems to go further than that. He apparently wants this document to describe _only_ those things which you can do in Illustrator, and describe them exactly _the same way_ as one would do them in Illustrator, even if Inkscape offers more convenient methods. I think this is wrong. 2. With Kwixson's approach, Inkscape would always seem inferior to AI, because you can't win just by copying. You can't be a better Illustrator than Illustrator, you need to be different to be better. And indeed Kwixson's text has a generally condescending tone and phrases like "is much less responsive", "is not as intuitive" etc. We need to be honest about Inkscape's weaknesses, but these judgements were often not based on any real weaknesses. 3. After all, who is this document for? Those who like AI the way it is will never switch, so it seems stupid to target them in such a document. I think we need to target those who are used to AI but are looking for something different and better. And therefore we must stress our strengths and differences, explaining them in a way which is easy to understand for AI users. Now on to specific examples. A. Kwixson has removed my mention of keyboard accessibility, in particular keys for screen-pixel-sized transformations, claiming this is not important. I've seen this attitude before from other AI users; they tend to dismiss this because they don't have it. Those who are really using Inkscape (or Xara, where I got the idea from, though by now Inkscape's keyboard is superior even to Xara) will disagree. B. In the section on shapes, Kwixson has removed my explanation of the difference between a shape and a path and the unique features that shapes offer. Instead he inserted an advice to do Ctrl+Shift+C (convert to path) as soon as you created a shape, to be able to node-edit it! This is because AI does not have shapes as such, treating everything as paths. I think this is plain stupid. Inkscape's shapes are clearly superior to those of any other program I know, and we must present them as such. C. In the section on Node tool, Kwixson provided some very cumbersome descriptions of how to convert a segment from curve to straight line and how to continue a path. When I proposed much simpler and more straightforward ways to do the same, he insisted that his descriptions closely match the way AI does this and therefore must stay. Once again, I don't see why one should go through all this when there's a much simpler way. Disclaimer on this point: I cannot even claim to completely understand Kwixson's descriptions, so I may have missed something important in them. Please anyone who knows AI's path editing, review these paragraphs and let us know what you think. Any feedback will be appreciated. I'm crossposting this to the user list too.

[Apologies for reporting here but sourceforge will not let me post with lynx-2.8.4 (can someone tell them?)---it says something like wrong filename for upload but I did not give any.] Here goes: Self-built on PPC. Start up clean. Click text, click canvas, type a few keys, then type Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V: voila 100% CPU. Chosing Paste from menu works as usual. Thanks for it all, ralf

Conversion to pdf

Hello, Just discovered Inkscape and I like it. Great work. I designed a flyer and want to send it to some people so they can print the flyer. I always did this in OpenOffice.org Draw and exported the flyer as pdf, so everybody could easily open it. Now I've used Inkscape to make my flyer and want to do the same. I wanted to open the flyer in Draw and use the functionality to save it as pdf but that won't work. Alse the standard svg and eps won't work. Maybe an idea to implement in the next version of Inkscape. Export to pdf. But for now.. Is there an other way to create pdf from the flyer I created in Inkscape?
