Crash on Change Document Properties

I'm using Inkscape .48 on a Kubuntu 10.10 system with 8Gb of RAM and plenty of drive space. Any attempt to modify Document Properties results in a crash. I've tried it with both a new (blank) load of Inkscape as well as a couple of different pre-existing drawings. It always says "Inkscape encountered an internal error and must close..." Can not build inkscape-0.48

Batch conversion of ai/eps/cdr to svg

I'm trying to do a batch conversion of 340 eps, ai and cdr files to svg files using Inkscape via the command line. I've previously tried to do this using uniconverter but got lots of errors, whereas Inkscape via the gui was able to open and convert them without fail. The problem I'm having is that there doesn't seem to be a way to open anything other than svgs from the command line. Trying something like inkscape -f infile.eps -l outfile.svg gave me: "infile.eps:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0 ^ ** (inkscape:12078): WARNING **: Specified document infile.eps cannot be opened (does not exist or not a valid SVG file)" Is there a way to do this? Resize an image from the command line

I want to scale an SVG file/object while preserving h/w ratios. In the gui, this would be done by clicking on the object, choosing object-->transform-->scale-->preserve ratio-->(enter scale) then file-->properties-->resize canvas to fit object. As you can see, that's a lot of work for an operation that should be really simple. Anyway, I tried figuring out how to use the shell mode, and didn't manage it. I assume I need to use the verb "DialogTransform" but that's as far as I got. Any help would be appreciated. -- 𓆦

howto copy part of a path

Mis-behaving 0.48

I am using the standard 0.48 installation on Windows Vista and Inkscape has started mis-behaving. I'm getting the attached extension-errors.log file created. I've tried reinstalling Inkscape, but this has not cured the problem. What's happening and what is the solution (in simple language, please!). Jon

Broken PDF file produced

Hi again ! I would like to add some more data to my previous mail. I'm using Inkscape 0.48. I assumed the faulty PDF file I obtained was due to my modifying the XML file directly. But it's actually not the case as it also happens with another document I didn't modify this way. Please let me show you some sample files : 1) http://mahen.free.fr/inkscape/Plaquette%20-%20Int%c3%a9rieur.svg as you can see, there is in the bottom right corner a polygon which is filled with a pattern which contains many spirals 2) http://mahen.free.fr/inkscape/Plaquette%20-%20Int%c3%a9rieur.pdf here is the resulting PDF On my computer : - the PDF takes about 5 to 10 seconds before being displayed !! (core2duo 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM). While the PDF file produced by inDesign (from which I exported this svg before modofying it under Inkscape) was displayed instantly (but, the inkscape produced .pdf was almost 10 times heavier, it seems a couple of parts were converted to bitmaps, I wonder why). - the bottom-right pattern is invisible (under evince / Ubuntu 10.10) when looking from far away. When zooming in, you can make out the polygon shape but it's filled with some kind of random pattern - if I scroll in the document, from the PDF reader, it even makes it *crash* and slows down my system a lot ! (of course, there was no display problem under Inkscape itself) It seems using some exported .svg files definitely don't please Inkscape a lot. Or this kind of patterns at least... Issues with patterns (including crashes)

Hi everyone ! First : thanks for the amazing work done by the Inkscape developers ! I'm a new casual Inkscape user :) I'm using it at the moment to carry on the work done by someone who owned inDesign. Thus, I used an .svg file that was exported from this piece of software. The export went fine overall, except some fonts issues (for instance, I could only select the first line in text frames) and colours were generally not good. I fixed almost anything by rewriting the text and changing colours but I encountered a few issues and problems in general with patterns. Indeed : in the document, there are a few polygons which are filled with a pattern which consists in many spirals. For some reasons the colours went wrong during the export but I couldn't change directly the colours used in the patterns. (more generally, I didn't know how to apply the same colours to many objects at the same time) So I converted the pattern back to an object, changed to colours, converted it to a pattern, and applied it to the object. So it did the trick. However I had many issues in the process : 1) Inkscape completely filled my memory twice and the kernel had to kill the task. This happened when using several times in a row the functions to convert patterns to objects or the contrary. All of a sudden, the hard drive began to spin non-stop (I have no swap but 4 GB of ram) and I could barely move my mouse cursor. It also happened when I was using the "node" tool to change the position / rotate etc. the pattern when applied to an object. 2) I managed to crash inkscape when undo-ing some operations that were involving a pattern <-> object conversion Also, I was wondering if there was a simpler way to handle patterns ? (edit them afterwards / change their colours / remove them from the list ?) 3) to make the operation easier, I decided to change some colours directly in the pattern definition in the XML file. It seemed to worked : the drawing was displayed properly in Inkscape or when exporting to .png. But when exporting to .pdf, the modified patterns were invisible or trashed when zooming in. Oops ! Can you guys please tell me if I should file some bugreports ? Maybe those bugs are known and fixed in the upcoming 0.48.1 ? (I'm also the one who filed the bugreport involving a font that was not displayed properly in Acrobat Reader under Windows, but was OK in Linux / OSX....) PS : I may upload the .svg file somewhere, if some of you are curious ! Best regards & thanks again to the team ! Mahen

Hi, My name is Hiran, and I am using Inkscape for designing. I am using it for nearly 3+ years. I remember the old version having an option of Whiteboard. I haven't used it, as I don't had any collaborative works to do. But currently when I checked to use it, I found its removed from latest versions. When I asked in IRC, some one told me that "Pedro" module is removed since it needs from the scratch coding to work properly. I want to know more details. Is the old code available. bug when importing ai

Hi, When importing an .ai file with an object having a "blend mode" to multiply, the "blend mode" is lost. I can't find a bug on this. Is it a known issue ? Can I open a bug ? Benoit

Shawn, I think we all understand that the problem you're addressing is a serious one. Inkscape will render older images based on 90ppi at a smaller size when it changes its definition for pixels per unit. Since there had been discussion of absolute size in the thread, I thought that the conversions might be of interest to those who might have a project that requires absolute sizing, even though it is of no help to you. <snif> And thanks for the heads up about 2.54cm/inch. I've been using some sewing books which make recommendations of rounding to the 10th rather than 100th perhaps because they were using pencil & paper, and it worked well enough for them personally. This is ultimately garbage advice, so thanks for pointing that out. crjw and John Culleton, Your examples and information were fantastic and useful. My biggest reason for using printer's points is to sidestep the differences between Gimp's ppi/ppcm v. Inkscape's ppi/ppcm. I use Gimp to clean up scanned images before working in Inkscape. Many older patterns are exactly 1/4th scale, so the Gimp to Inkscape workflow results in a bit of extra work. Gimp uses 72ppi, Inkscape uses 90ppi for the time being. As John pointed out, the value of 72.72 for a printer's point is outdated. So I did some research: Printer's points, inches, cm's, mm's, etc. are reconverted back to pixels by each rendering platform according to its own ppi/ppcm definition. So yes, they're always accurate. Also, Inkscape defaults numeric precision to 8, and will pad numbers with 0's to match the precision setting. Wikipedia's page <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_%28typography%29>explains that 72.72 was set in 1886, and was changed in 1959. inkscape autosave directory

hello, i was just wondering about the autosave path's options. would it be possible to add a variable to the autosave path, so all of the autosaved files would be put into one directory with the same name as opened file? for example, if i would be working on /random/directories/someFile.svg, i would want all of the autosaves in /random/directories/someFile_autosave thanks for any answers, ~Adam

Consider the following: -a road map -a circuit board design -a floor plan -a sewing pattern All of these drawings accurately reflect some physical entity. Usually measurements or coordinates of the physical entity are known and can be expressed in standard units such as meters, miles, inches, mils, etc. My only reason for writing this post is to point out that it is possible to enter coordinates into an SVG drawing in their native values... regardless of how big or how mall the unit is. e.g. a map can be created where path coordinates are specified in miles. -in this case: 1user_unit=1mile. e.g. a sewing pattern can be created where path coordinates are specified in cm. -in this case: 1user_unit=1cm. If necessary the drawing can be scaled with a transform, a viewBox, or a combination of a transform and a viewBox. As pointed out by others: when using a viewBox the whole 90DPI issue goes away! Below are a couple of examples of how a sewing pattern can be done with SVG using a "user unit" of 1cm. Don't try sewing the pattern at home! Both drawings are identical when printed (except for color). Both drawings will print on 8.5"x11" (letter size) paper. Line thickness is exactly 0.05cm (half a mm). The drawings both consist of: 2 squares exactly 8cm x 8cm 2 circles with radii of exactly 4cm For variety I used a "<rect>" element for one square and a "<path>" element for the other. (No reason for this other than to show there are different ways of drawing objects). And likewise, I used a "<circle>" element for one circle and a "<path>" element for the other. There are also two attached bonus drawings that show how the height and viewBox parameters can be adjusted to print the drawing at proper scale on two half size pieces of paper. Admittedly this would be more useful for drawings that don't already fit on 8.5"x11" paper! All drawings will load into Inkscape... and they can all be converted to PDF. But it can be a little awkward using Inkscape to modify a drawing with a viewBox. -crjw

fantastic lxml

Hi, all. Last week I tried to use, for the first time, the perspective extension. A message was complaining about the *num* Python package. I use a MacBook so, to install the num package I use MacPort. I use MacPort a lot and never had a problem before. After installing the num package the extension complained about the lxml package for libxml2 library. So I installed it using, again, MacPort. Now I cannot use any extension. Every single extension complains about the *lxml* package, but it is installed. I am aware about the bug of Inkscape in this matter. What I didn't know is that it will affect every extensions. Before that I was able to use others extensions like the *lorem ipsum* text generation. Now I am not. Someone had solved this issue? Please help. Alessandro Antonello
