0.48 extensions question

I downloaded the portable version of 0.48 from PortableApps. I can't seem to get the render functions to work in the extensions menu. I tried rendering a gear, the sphere, and a barcode. Nothing happens. The extension appears to work, but when it is done, there is nothing on the page. I do not get any error messages, but could I be missing a library or something?

SVG 2.0: What does Inkscape want?

Hi, I've been asked to sit on a panel at Open SVG 2010 titled "Graphical Effects Beyond SVG 1.1". I'll have five minutes before the discussion begins to present Inkscape's hopes for SVG 2.0. These are the things that I can think of at the moment. Please add to the list: 1. Markers that can inherit parent attributes (e.g. marker fill takes parent stroke color so arrow heads are same color as path). 2. Mesh gradients (Diffusion curves?). 3. Vector effects (see: http://dev.w3.org/SVG/modules/vectoreffects/master/SVGVectorEffectsPrimer.h… ) 4. Multipage SVG's. Thanks, Tav

You should always include these details in bug reports. You need to know what Nautilus is doing with the file. It may not be invoking Inkscape. Presumably running Inkscape directly and loading the file from within Inkscape works? Prior to discovering this problem, were you able to load an .svg in Inkscape by double clicking in Nautilus? Or was this the first time you'd tried. Does Nautilus offer a right-click Open With... option? If so, can you select Inkscape from that list, and does it still crash? For me, dbl-click opens the .svg in Eye-Of-Gnome, and right-click open with opens it in Inkscape, if I select that. I'm using Ubuntu / 10.4 / xfce4. Cheers -Terry

Some usage questions and observations, mostly about paths

I'm currently drawing a lot of maps, especially with municipality boundaries etc, this means a lot of closed paths, which should fit together like a puzzle. The snap function is a great help to this, but from another source I got some parts where the path is not closed, but the start and endpoint is there twice, without being connected. Now I can select both start and endpoint, and click on the -o o- v --o-- button (join selected end nodes) in the toolbar. Is there a shortcut for this? There isn't even a menu entry... The same is valid: I have selected a subpath between two nodes, is there a way to add nodes in between other than the (+)-button in the toolbar? (I know of the double click, but if I want fast a lot of new nodes, this becomes rather tiresome. Another thing with nodes: if I select only a few nodes from a path, and press the arrows, only these nodes move. The transformation tool though operates only on the entire path, so I cannot move a subset of nodes in a path by a fixed amount of pixels (e.g. make a zig zag line by selecting only the even nodes and moving them up a fixed amount). I have only one object, let's say a rectangular shape on the canvas, from 100,100 to 300,200. If I now select 'adjust canvas size to object' from the document settings, the object in the xml still has 100,100, 300,200 as coordinates, but a transform(-100,-100) applied to it all. How can I apply the transformation to all objects, so that the object's coordinates (in the xml) would be 0,0 - 200,100? And last, how does one make a distinction (and possibly convert) a path with absolute coordinates (uppercase M at the beginning of the path) to a path with relative coordinates (lowercase m)? I think this should be as easy as changing the path's direction -- cheers, Alex

During this development period the team focused again on stabilty and correctness. More than 60 bugs have been resolved since the release of 1.3.7. In particular, import filters and PDF export have been improved. Intersecting lines

Hi all, I have two intersecting lines drawn with bezier tool. I need a tool that split these lines at every intersection, but I'm not able to find the right tool in the path menu. Cannot get condensed fonts

Hello, For some reason Inkscape does not show me the condensed fonts on my system. I am running Ubuntu (Lucid) and I have some DejaVu condensed fonts installed: % ls /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/*Condensed* /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansCondensed-BoldOblique.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansCondensed-Bold.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansCondensed-Oblique.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSansCondensed.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerifCondensed-BoldItalic.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerifCondensed-Bold.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerifCondensed-Italic.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSerifCondensed.ttf So I go to inkscape, select some text and click on the little "T" button to get additional font options. There, I select DejaVu Sans and under "Style" I see options like normal and Semi-Condensed, but I do not see Condensed. Does anyone know what's going on? Is it possible that DejaVu does not actually *have* condensed fonts and all the files that say "Condensed" are actually mislabeled and they are really only semi-condensed? I'm struggling with node selection

Hi! That's my first try with Inkscape and I think I've broken it. Every time I select 2+ nodes with the "Edit path by nodes" tool the critter add 1 other node between the 2 selected. Inkscape problem or broken svg ?

Hi, have a look at http://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/SVG , there's an embedded SVG graphics. When I dowload this svg from http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikibooks/de/7/72/SVG_Buch01.svg I can use it with rsvg, but not with inkscape. inkscape just shows a completely empty canvas. (using inkscape 0.47.0 from ubuntu 10.04). Is that a problem of inkscape or a problem of the svg file? regards Hadmut

Inkscape just stop

Good day. Using inkscape about to finish a drawing I get a screen that say INKSCAPE HAS STOPED WORKING. I am fairly new to the program and enjoying it a lot, I have still got to learn a lot about the use but have made a lot of drawings that really impressed me. Another point how do you upgrade inkscape I can't seem to find it. I am running Windows 7 Professional and have seen that it is not on your list for compatible programs, could this be a problem I use to run on XP Professional with no problems at all and that was before the 4.8 upgrade. weird behavior of gear renderer

I make use of the gear renderer all the time and haven't run into this before, I don't think. I am running 0.47, downloaded just today from inkscape.org, on mac OS X Leopoard. When I render a gear, I cannot get the boolean operations to work with it. So if I want to make a "hole" in the center of the gear, I can't put a circle there and do a difference operation to cut a circle into the center of the gear. >From a 2D standpoint, this would not be a big deal, but since I import the gear .svg files into Blender for later 3D operations, this is something of a problem. What am I doing wrong, or what is it about the gear paths that is preventing this?

(Sharism is discussed here: http://freesouls.cc/essays/07-isaac-mao-sharism.html) I also recently got the opportunity to present the work as a rotating show (with Charles Viera) at Princeton Public Library (65 Witherspoon, Princeton, NJ), produced by Janie Hermann, and sponsored by the Princeton Arts Council. Importing eps image.

I want to import an eps image that is 15in wide x 12 in high. Even if I preset the page size to those numbers the import reverts to 8.5 x 11. language problem

Hi, if I put the cursor over one of inkscapes tool-icons, a line pops up, that describes the function of the tool. I would like to know, how this sort of pop-up-line is called in english. In only one of this pop-up-lines I found also the keyboard shortcut for the tool (shift-F2). I would like to ask the devellopers to put the keyboard-shortcut in the pop-up-line of every tool. It would help a lot to all the people who don't use inkscape every day. Thanks, Hago

Downloaded the 0.48 alpha package and started to play with it. My first interest was the capability to use CMYK colors. Before 0.48 the doctrine was that you could use three out of four CMYK colors but not 4 out of 4. With 0.48 as you move one CMYK slider one of the others tends to jump back to zero but not always. By fiddling some I was able to establish rich black at 60,40,40,100. Given that internally Inkscape is still using the RGB color model I wonder if this is a color that will actually be used for output. There are several swatch bars available but none seem to be expressed in CMYK terms. If in fact all possible CMYK colors can be expressed in RGB terms then it should be possible to use pseudo CMYK colors on the Inkscape color bar and pass these shades on to e.g., Scribus in RGB format. Hi, I'm trying to import some pages of pdf files generated with LilyPond. I need to import the scores as pdf, ps or eps because there are built-in postscript drawings that could not be generated by LilyPon's svg backend. I have made a copy of LilyPond OTF fonts into /Library/Fonts (have also tried ~/.fonts and ~/Library/Fonts)... (the files are: CenturySchL-Roma.otf CenturySchL-Bold.otf CenturySchL-BoldItal.otf CenturySchL-Ital.otf emmentaler-11.otf emmentaler-13.otf emmentaler-14.otf emmentaler-16.otf emmentaler-18.otf emmentaler-20.otf emmentaler-23.otf emmentaler-26.otf emmentaler-brace.otf) I can use these fonts if I start a new document in InkScape, but it fails to find the fonts if I try to open or import a pdf page. It seems to be an "import" issue, because I can open these files in Illustrator (I don't want to use it) and the fonts are recognized by the inkscape if I try to create new texts... Could it be a Inkscape/import bug? Does anyone have any suggestion about how to load the ps/pdf/eps lilypond documents? thanks, josé -- http://zepadovani.info
