Snap problem

This is something I've been meaning to comment of for ages :? I've been in the habit of grouping objects for schematic components then surrounding them with an invisible bounding box (thinnest possible line with no colour) that is 1mm grid aligned. This has worked perfectly on older versions of Inkscape so I could quickly and precisely position these objects. However with 0.47 the snap behaviour has become extremely difficult to handle. It seems now that every single point in the object will try to act as a snap focus and accurate positioning is a nightmare :( Can anyone suggest a way to get bounding box only snapping? -- Will J Godfrey http://www.musically.me.uk Say you have a poem and I have a tune. I think so, unless someone else has a better idea. If it's any consolation the scale factor is predictable, you would need to make your original drawing 80% of its current size. Unless Illustrator allows you to change the screen units. printing from inkscape not the expected size

Hi I'm posting this for a friend so if you need more info I'll have to ask her <grin> My friend has a canon IP5200 printer and when she prints from inkscape the image comes out smaller. For e.g. trying to print and cut a 14 x 28 oblong. All measures up in inkscape, paper set to A4 both in inkscape and the printer, convert to png, print and hey ho.... my oblong has printed out as a 13 1/2 by 27 oblong. Does anyone have any ideas how to get the canon to print at 100%, she does not seem to have a 100% setting or it is not printing at this, I'm not sure which. she is having problems printing direct from inkscape so is exporting to png and printing that as I understand it. Filters Not Saved with PNG

I have created a graphic with multiple layers. One of the layers is some text. I have applied a drop shadow filter to the text. When I save the file as PNG, the drop shadow is not saved. I have also tried applying a gaussian blur to the text layer and to the text layer after converting it to an object. The blur is not applied. Export SVG: Size doesnt match original file

Hi, i use inkscape to convert Illustrator-AI-Files to SVG and noticed some size difference between the original ai-file and the converted svg-file. The converted file is about 1cm bigger. I tried command line and GUI. If i use Adobe Illustrator to save the AI-File to SVG there everything works fine. The Image size of SVG and AI match. thanks! Tobias

command-line export SVG with area-drawing: Workaround via PDF, but exported area is wrong!

Hi, i have to export an Adobe-Illustrator (AI) file to SVG with export option "export-area-drawing". I know this option is not available on SVG-Files jet. So i tried a workaround.... I exorted the AI file as PDF with area-drawing and then to SVG. This works fine, but....... the exported area in the pdf file is wrong.... the image is truncated... 2 px from image top are repeated at the bottom.... So, the easiest way to solve my problem would be to use "export-area-drawing" on SVG files. but the roadmap doesnt say whether this option is possible in the future....or does it? New version of Alchemy is out w/ SVG support

SVG to finally gets some support from MS?

It seems Microsoft has applied to take part in the W3C SVG working group. Could that means they are finally coming around to supporting SVG in IE (after attempting to develop their own web vector format as part of WPF). Future plans for speeding up Inkscape?

I was wondering if anyone was planning on mods to speed up inkscape's interface and 3D ops? I.e. where it "feels" like it could really benefit would be use of 3D hardware acceleration in doing some of it's on-screen rotations and movements. Other areas with more 'niche' or smaller payoff would be using CUDA-based highly parallel processing (I hear that CUDA libs are good at scaling many points in parallel), followed by multiple CPU cores, and use of 64-bit instructions. I think the most bang for the buck and most general would come from using 3D HW accel and moving to the extra memory provided by 64-bit. I know that running out of memory is where Adobe Illus. quickly fails on larger vector drawings, especially in the undo/redo system. It's amazing what Inkscape can do and how easy it is to do thing when it comes to vector stuff, but my version (.47) doesn't seem real stable after I've been running it for a while. All of my long edit sessions in _playing_ with advanced features have ended by it crashing. I wasn't trying to do anything in particular so I don't remember the workflow I did each time, but it was usually after it had been up a while. Only once did I actually get to a point of saving an output w/o it crashing. I'm a complete novice when it comes to computer art/SVG art, so I'd sure I was doing something that was 'unreasonable'... :-) I didn't try to report the bug at the time as I'm sure the developers have their plate full with other problems and since I'm not real familiar with correct operation, I didn't want to be told that I wasn't using the product 'the right way' and by being a beginner, the crashes were due to me trying to do things that I should have done differently (though I tend to believe programs shouldn't crash in such situations, but there could be workarounds that would be known if I was more adept with the program). I can try to report bugs if I'm not made to feel worthless for reporting them if I don't also include fixes for them...like I have got on some projects...(oh the joys of open source projects :-) ). I feel that Joshua (not me) summed that up nicely. It boils down to that we are an open and welcoming community. Feedback is welcomed and appreciated, and the more info you can provide, the better for experience for everyone. We don't tend to take issue unless you want to complain and suggest how we can do it better. We don't know better than you, and we won't (generally claim to) know what's right. Tell us. Making a dial

Hi all, I'm about trying to make a dial by following the tips on Tavmjong's web site at http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles-Tricks.html but I just can't figure out how to handle the parameters within the 'tiled clones' dialogue. I managed to set the center of rotation, and checked 'exclude' for the columns, but how do I proceed after that? (I selected P1 translation.) For a start, I just wanted to make a dial composed of 4 short strokes, at 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270°, but even this seems to be difficult. Sorry, but the rows/columns part is a bit confusing to me. Animation in Inkscape

Hello I am a newbie to Inkscape and scripting in general. I am trying to build an animation extension with Inkscape for doing simple animations as a project in my multimedia course. For that I need to add a timeline in Inkscape and write the timing data for a particular object manipulated by the user into my animation file. Is this possible with Inkscape extensions? I have tried a couple of times to learn Python, but I am an old fogy and keep coming up against a wall whenever I try to get my head around the whole object oriented programming thing (yes, I know, Python can do procedural just fine...but it seems like OOP is a sort of central concept to a lot of what python is capable of..) Anybody got any good recommendations for books for learning Python? Especially ones that actually give a clear explanation of the the whole OOP thing in a Python context? I've found stuff that kind of explains things for other languages, but that doesn't help with understanding things from a Python specific point of view. I've gotten a Python for Dummies book...but...it seems I am too dumb even for that. I'd really like to get a handle on this, since Python scripts both Gimp and Blender as well as Inkscape. I've been tinkering with computers for over 20 years, but my programming experience, what there is of it, is pretty much in procedural. Some Pascal (back in the 80's), various flavors of BASIC, mostly on old Atari 8-bit machines, some on Commodor64, Action --think of a cross between C and Pascal, it ran on the Atari--, and lately, Tcl/Tk (Not explicitly OOP, but it is supposedly capable of it), on Win and Linux.

It's how I'm doing most of the scenes for an animated book trailer I'm working on. Status of dbus capability

Howdy, I just built inkscape from bzr and ran import dbus bus = dbus.SessionBus() inkdoc1 = bus.get_object('org.inkscape', '/org/inkscape/desktop_0') doc1 = dbus.Interface(inkdoc1, dbus_interface="org.inkscape.document") im = doc1.image(100 ,100, '/home/ktenney/Firefox_wallpaper.png') Which worked on a dbus branch a while back. Now it starts inkscape, but d - was the dbus code merged? - if so, how do I enable/use it? - if not, where is dbus capable code? Thanks, Kent

graphic tablet problem

I am having problems with my wacom intuos 3 tablet. It works on all the tools and when I go to add it, it appears to be there but I can't change any of the settings. It works in other programs like PSP ok and I have the latest driver installed. I am using inkscape .46 and .47 and can't get it to work in either. But strangely (no idea why I tried this) the erasor seems to work ! No idea why. Can someone help me here please ? cheers, Jo
