Exporting a pdf with an Inkscape generated png

Hi, I'm using Inkscape to create a book cover that'll be published through Amazon's CreateSpace service. CreateSpace requires a pdf. I can output my Inkscape svg as a beautiful pdf except for one thing: I'm using a few blurs in the book cover and, of course, they don't render correctly. So I thought about outputting the whole cover as a png (which renders everything correctly, including blurs), importing the png back into Inkscape, and then outputting that as a pdf. I figured that, going that route, I'd need the png to be of sufficient size so that it'll print correctly at 300 dpi - since the png is no longer vector. So, is there a way to "tell" the resulting pdf to use my gigantic 2400 x 1575 pixel png but fit it in an 8 x 5.25 inch document? Hey all, I just received word that Inkscape has been selected as a mentoring organization for Google's Summer of Code (GSoC) 2009. Let's make our fifth year, the best yet! Will any potential mentors quickly chime in so we have an idea of who wants to participate this year? As things have been before, we will have to request the number of slots we would like. Knowing that, the sooner we can get a feel for how many people want to mentor, the better. This would also be a good time for any potential student participants to start putting together their proposals. PNG output is not anti-aliased well

Hi We are the makers of the Tomahawk Desktop operating system (http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/). We use Inkscape (ver. 0.46) to create all of our vector graphics. Certain graphics we created are not sharp, ie. not anti-aliased well. editing freehand

I often draw a wiggly line, then realize that it's not quite right, and I'd like to redraw part of it. Ideally, I'd mark a part of it to be replaced, and then free-hand draw another pieve of wiggly line to replace it. Now the only way I've found to edit an existing line is by adding and removing control points and turning the tangents -- far too cumbersome for what I'd like to do. Is there any way to accomplish what I'm trying to do? To edit a portion of a line freehand? -- hendrik

Felipe, I have a statistical relationship in mind and I find it is convenient to use Inkscape to create the graphs of what I think it should look like under different conditions. Having done that, it would be nice to be able to extract the formula for each curve that I have drawn. The curve of the relationship that I am thinking of should have only a single y value for each x coordinate, so it should be a function. eraser tool opinions?

Now that the Eraser tool is in SVN for quite some time, what do people think of it? Is it useful? In what mode do you use it, if at all? Disclaimer: as you may remember I was against this tool from the beginning, considering it redundant. Its Delete mode is equivalent to Alt+drag followed by Del in Selector, and its Cut mode is now equivalent to Alt+drag in Calligraphic pen which I just added: * When drawing with <b>Alt</b>, Inkscape <b>subtracts</b> the path you have created from the selected path (with <b>Shift</b>, it adds to the selected path). This allows you to quickly patch or fix problems in a stroke you have drawn without leaving the tool. Prezi-like functionality

Hi list, Probably some of you have already seen Prezi, an web application for "non-linear" presentations. That doesn't sound too clear, but see http://www.prezi.com for an example, or http://www.aether.hu/prezi for an introduction. It basically breaks the traditional slide-show format of presentations and turns it into a fancy dynamic flight-simulator-like concept. Very refreshing and ubercool after years of Powerpoint slides :-) As far as I know, there is currently no other software doing something like this. But IMHO, Inkscape would be very much suited for this. Currently, it has the ideal editing tools to compose the presentation material itself, but it lacks the animation interface to provide the navigation and zooming aspect in the presentation itself. With all the SVG animation plans, Prezi-like presentations would seem to be within reach. My question: are there tools/applications available that provide the zooming/path-based animation functionality for Inkscape-produced SVG files? Or can this be done using Inkscape itself and scripting (Javascript?)? I suppose the latter would come down to hand-coding and building a lot from the ground up, or are there tools available that can help with that? Opinions and suggestions appreciated, wwwald

Trim/extend feature questions

Hi! I would like to achieve a trim/extent feature like in many CAD-like application can be found. Here is a little screenshot what I trying to do: http://khiraly.googlepages.com/trim_extend.png Here are the steps what I did: There are two lines and a circle, so 1. I converted the circle to path 2. I opened up the circle 3. I duplicated the line, and go to the Path->Cut Path menuitem 4. I repeated the above step to the other line Sadly this precedure involves some imprecisement, I zoomed into, and created this screenshot: http://khiraly.googlepages.com/circle-imprecise.png Can somebody propose a precodure where the result is mathematically correct, and does not have imprecisement? Needless to say, that I cant union the three paths together... Or should I wait until a trim/extend tool arrives? (I use rev 20844, from today) Any ideas? Best regards, Khiraly

Enlarged Area of Drawing

Hello Inkscape List, Thanks for a wonderful program. I have a fairly simple question which I can't figure out from internet searching. I am making a diagram and I would like to have a box in the upper left hand corner of the drawing show an enlarge portion of my drawing. 1) Is there an easy way to do this? By easy I mean if there an option for a box that limits graphic to inside the box... kind of .svg within an .svg? 2) If not and I have to do it manually, then I will relate my other problem right now. I was going to do this manually by drawing a rectangle then simply copy/paste the necessary items into my box to manually create the enlarged area. But for some reason whenever, I try to draw rectangle I get nothing but a box of dashed lines that disappears as soon as I don't click on it. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? Anyways thanks alot in advance. Inkscape new Interaface Icon sizes

Hi, I am trying to update the default icon set. I' ve Installed development versions os inkscape in both Linux and Windows There's a new interface options in setting where you can choose from small/medium/normal icons (cool). normal :: 24x24 px medium :: 16x16 px ?!? small :: 16x16 px Can anyone (developer - probably not the best place to ask this!!!) confirm that this is the way inkscape is going. previously some icons were 22x22 px I am considering doing two icon files - 16x16 :: small - 24x24 :: normal It would be even better if both icon's sizes could be in the same place so that inkscape picked the correct size. Plácido Sousa sent an improved version of the current default icon set to the user list. It's a clear improvement over the current, and in my opinion, it should be made the default set since there is no consensus about the Tangoified theme and the default has some evident problems. The proposed set from Sousa is a polished version of the same icons we have now, so the familiarity won't be a problem and the people -like me- who think the current set needs desperately some love will be more comfortable with the new look. What do you think?

Great work Plácido! I think you really worked around the most evident issues of the theme and achieved a very coherent style. Even though I still prefer the Tangoified set, I think your theme is a clear improvement and it should replace the default set asap. I'd like to know what the rest think. In my opinion your set should be the default if there is no consensus about the Tango set. Gez

Hi all, I've been improving (I think!) the inkscape iconset (work in progress). I've resized and simplified some of the icons to make them look better in my Linux distro (Ubuntu 8.10 - haven't tried others). If the feedback is positive I'll try them in Microsoft Windows to see what I can do! (Sorry! why doesn't this work?

I am trying to make a simple wedge shape that is 1/6 of a hexagon. So I used the polygon tool to make a hexagon. I convert it to a path. I duplicated it, shrunk it down some and used a boolean operation to cut a smaller hex shaped hole in the exact center of the larger hexagon. Then I used the node tool to select the extraneous nodes and delete them. Now I have two lines, both part of the same path, but not connected. When I select two end points on the lines and try to join them with a new segment, I get an error saying I haven't selected two nodes!!! So just for the heck of it, I used the bezier tool to make two separate lines, combined them to a single path and then tried to connect two end nodes with a new segment. Worked just fine. I could try to do the shape I am after this way, but getting everything positioned right might be something of a pain. I am just wondering why the first technique doesn't work. Seems like it should...

installing inkscape on a gentoo webserver... help !

Hi everybody, I'm a french user, writing in english like i can, sorry by advance :) I'm trying since many days to install inkscape on my gentoo webserver, but i was not sure it was possible. Couldn't download 'baselayout-1.12.10.tar.bz2'. Abor * Fetch failed for 'sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.10-r5' * Messages for package sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.10-r5: * Fetch failed for 'sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.10-r5' I had this problem 3 days ago, but after many manipulations and the emergements of depedencies, and the ./configure installation of 0.46 version via a tar.gz file, this had finished to happen.
