Can inkscape export an .ai file?

Hi, I've read in the docs that it can, but I don't get that as one of my choices in the SaveAs drop down list of file extensions. Do I need to install something else to get Adobe Illustrator export working? Thanks ,RQ

It seems that even the latest Slackware is missing a jillion libraries needed by Inkscape. But I note there are complied rpm versions for other versions of Linux. Are these self contained? Or do they need the jillion libraries at runtime? SVG source images get goofed up when combined

I often use Inkscape to build network diagrams. I've collected a number of SVG images (mostly from Tango Icons) which I use as objects in those diagrams. On my Ubuntu Hardy box today I discovered that once I get a number of objects into a document, if I import a single new object, the colors on it get all messed up upon import. This never happened before. Opening the object alone, or importing it into a new document works fine. Have any of you seen this behavior in .46? If so, have you figured out a work-around? Might it have something to do with the (new?) color management stuff? I chose not to attach files to the list because they are rather large, but I would be happy to send examples to anyone interested in exploring this off-list. -- -Regards- -Quentin Hartman-

Word balloon tail fill question

Hi, I have an issue with creating the tails on word balloons for a comic with Inkscape. Keep in mind I'm a brand new user, so I'm sure the solution is a simple one. I use the ellipse tool to create the word balloons themselves, and I use the Bezier tool to create the "tails" to/from the balloons. My problem is that I'm creating the word balloons and tails *on top of* art (utilizing the Layer tool), and I can't find a way to fill the tails solid with white, to prevent the artwork from showing through. I understand how to fill the ellipses themselves and keep them solid, but the tails I can't seem to figure out. Can someone help? Inkscape to Silverlight

Hello all, I'm using the xaml save function in Inkscape to create maps to use in silverlight. The two problems I have ran into are: 1. Inkscape saves the name of an element as name="" instead of x:name="". 2. The lablel of an element is completely dropped instead of converting it into the tag="" attribute in xaml. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can make this change? Thanks in advance

"chisel effect" with filters?

I am using a recent nightly build (and really like the filter effect defaults provided). One think I can't figure out is how to add an exponent to a blurred layer to make embosses more like chisels. Attached is an example from xara that I am trying to emulate. Any suggestions from the filter effect gods? -Rob A>

If I draw an object, e.g. a filled Rectangle, and then press F1 for the selector tool, I can click anywhere inside the rectangle to have it selected and the modifier-drags appear on the corners. previously (opensuse 10.3) I could do the very same with the mouse, and to my knowledge, this is also the intended behavior. Now, I can draw the object as before, but after switching to the selection tool, I cannot select the object with the pen. I either have to lasso it by dragging a bounding box around it, or 'double-click'/triple-click or whatever on it, but not too fast, otherwise it switches back to edit mode (F4 in the case of my rectangle) If I click on an object with the mouse, the mouse cursor remains the same as by simply hovering over an object, i.e. the hand. If I hover (not press) with the pen, I have the same hand, but once I press on the object, the pointer-cursor reappears. Does anybody have an Idea as why this is happening. Calligraphic tool Thinning/thickenning not working at all

Hi, I'm an Inkscape newbie (but not to vector graphics GUIs). I've found a great (and short) tutorial on simulating engravings with Inkscape ( http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.46-engraving1.png). I'm sure most of you have read/seen it, so I hope someone can help me out on this. I've been following all the steps without any trouble up to "Thinning/thickenning". When I press ALT and drag the cursor (either with Wacom pen or mouse) I get a new path, no thickenning or thinning anywhere... I've tried it right after drawing the paths, after unselecting and selecting them, after unselecting and selecting just one, with the mouse, the pen, the eraser,... getting always de same result. On the status bar I get the hint inviting me to press ALT+drag, but won't work for me... Any clues on what's going on and why can't I use this promising tool?! I'm using freshly installed Inkscape 0.46 on Kubuntu Hardy (8.04), with a Wacom Intuos A3, and brand new PC. Thank you in advance. Cheers, P.S.: this is my first post ever, anywhere. Thank you very much for your replies. it was a flowed unflowed text problem. I did not know there were differences in creation method between click and click and drag for text. thank you for teaching it to me! this also solved some problems I had with pattern-filling! thank you.. it is a great improvement for me, even if it would be nice if coders will be able to let all the types (flowed - unflowed and coverted to text) work the same way.. anyone of them as qualities and difects.. but there is no way to use all the qualities of the three. Inkshape does not work on MacOSX

I run system 10.4.11 on an iBook G4 (this model: http://support.apple.com/specs/ibook/iBook_G4_Late_2004.html). I've downloaded Inkshape and followed the described procedure. When I open the program, another program called X11 also opens. A few seconds after, Inkshape quits, leaving only X11 open. This happen every time. I've tried to download Inkshape again a few months later, and the situation is still the same. bern

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone might be up to manning a booth for LugRadio Live UK? http://lugradio.org/live/UK2008/ It is coming up fairly soon, but as of the beginning of the week they still had some room for exhibiting. I won't be able to make it, but the one in the USA was very good. If anyone could make it there to have an Inkscape presence, we could get together demo art, fliers that can be printed, etc.

Hi everybody, thanks for all the replies, and sorry if I'm not replying you, due to an exam I haven't got much free time. Hystrix.. what do you mean with flowed text? And how to unflow it if necessary? please notice that I've got the italian version of inkscape. I wanted to switch to the english one, but I don't know how to do that as well.. !! Thanks ROb for the example.. it is working, so that helped me understanding that my problem is nor a corrupted installation nor a wrong procedure. Can it be due to font choosen? Tracking dependencies

Hi guys, There's a side issue that's been kicking around for a while now. Inkscape doesn't really have it's dependencies explicitly listed. So things may or may not work for certain users trying to build on certain platforms, OS versions, etc. For example, I put in a patch recently that uses g_timeout_add_seconds (). In the documentation on it, the function is listed as "Since 2.14". So that bumps the requirement to have glib2 >= 2.14. However that would make things no longer work on Fedora 7 and instead bump Fedora 8 as the minimum there. Since that's only a year old, the might be a bit too soon to bump. Anyway, this highlights a need we have to be tracking what we bump and what impact it will have. This is something that even non- programmers can help with, so I've added a quick section and link to the Help Wanted wiki page: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ HelpWanted#Determining_Dependencies A first step would be if people skimmed through the glib and gtk+ docs looking for newer functions. Then adding those that are in our codebase to the "Functions Used" table on the wiki could really help: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ Tracking_Dependencies#Functions_Used Then if someone has a distro they care about, they can add it and/or fill out details for at at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tracking_Dependencies#Distros Finally, the developers can get a handle on creeping dependencies, and perhaps add a few #ifdef's or alternate methods where needed in order to keep things sane.

Hello everybody! Does anybody know how to use text as object-mask? I need to cut a text in a picture so that the text would actually be transparent! The goal is easily achieved converting text in path, and grouping it with a background, and then using it as a mask for the picture. But in this way I'm loosing the chance to change what is written in a second moment. Reading some references, I saw that text objects should work as any other objects about masking, but they they don't. What am I missing? Lucio

Hey Everyone There was a great thread about SVG and the web a few months ago. I re-read it but I am still a little confused about something. I have a long term project that will involve charting and mathematical processing of peaks that are plotted out. An SVG based chart might be just the thing. The scientists that would use this could be prompted to download Firefox as this online tool that I am hoping to create could save them a lot of money over the desktop versions out there, so IE is not an issue. So to get to the point I was just wondering about the state of SVG support now and guesses on the state a year from now. I would also love to make this site SVG only, any guesses as to when someone could make a fully functional SVG only site? Google does not index SVG only sites but Google can basically only see text. Do you think I would get blacklisted if I created a text only site and found a way to re-route Google through browser identification? Any thoughts on other work arounds? I am also trying to learn about open source flash. With proprietary flash distributed so far, does (open or closed) flash present a serious danger?If not is there another? I know SVG is great but I heard that Beta was also better then VHS, the best technology does not always win, what is standing in our way? My plotting application would be an enormous investment of time, is it possible that SVG will end up another Beta? Please delete the "subheading SVG vs Flash" if you have other SVG web thoughts, I loved the last thread and I would love to read any discussions pertaining to SVG and the web. ThX-Patrick

It is! (When I apply the mask I don't actually see the bitmap) I even tryed selecting all the stuff in a different order.. no way! :( Lucio ...Yes, I did try it. Thanks Rob, but.. did you try it? Is it working for you? It doesn't for me. Neither in home computer, nor in the one I have got where I work.. As far as i use some text, grouped or not with some background, the bitmap just disappears completely when masking it. I am looking for a book cover illustrator. I read this article http://www.linux.com/articles/114172 about using inkscape to design book cover. If this mailing list is not appropriate for my request, please kindly suggest another forum. The idea of the book cover is to include the FSF gnu, McKusick's daemon, and Ewing's penguin. Exporting Inkscape SVG to Corel and other apps

Greetings I made a logo for a client who lives in other city. I'm sending him the source vectors for him to print and work the logo there, so I need to be sure about Inkscape SVG support in other apps. The logo is all paths and includes a shadow (blur effect). Setting ICC profiles in Preferences

I have Inkscape 0.46 (with liblcms_1.dll in C:\Program Files\Inkscape\ installtion folder) on Windows XP SP2 (and all patches until present). In the **Color Settings** control panel , I have set the device profiles as follows: @ 'Displays' -- BenQ E2200W (Digital) on Radeon 9200 Series @ 'Printers' -- Epson IJ Printer 06 on Epson Stylus CX6900f (multifunction) @ 'Scanners' -- Epson Stylus CX6900f/CX7000f/DX7000f scanner - reflective The **Color Management** page in the **Inkscape Preferences** dialogue neither displays correctly nor allows profiles to be specified. In case the embedded pixmap is stripped by the listserv: @ **Display profile** display <none> and a profile cannot be set. (Fallback is to mark 'Retrieve profile from display' but I do not know if this is actually happening. There is a manufacturer supplied profile for my LCD monitor. @ **Device profile** drop-down is distorted and does not allow selection of the inkjet printer or an industry CMYK profile such as SWOP ( US Web Coated). I would like to use colour management in Inkscape if I can, particularly to preview graphics intended for a particular press and paper stock. But first some answers to a few questions: @ What is Inkscape's working colour profile, if any? Adobe RGB 1998? @ Where do you store ICC *.icc or *.icm profile files on the Windows version of Inkscape? Or does it use the Windows system profiles in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\color ? Any advice about getting the colour-management functionality in Inkscape to work will be gratefully received.
