group items on separate layers

I have two items in Inkscape 0.45-1. Each item is on a separate layer. When I group them together they become grouped on the same layer. Is there a way to group items yet retain their layer state so that I can control visibility? Hmm... heathenx

Using raster effects in development builds

I am using the .46 dev (Nov 30) build on Windows XP and would like to use the raster effects, but I am not sure exactly how to get them working. I understand that I need Imagemagick, but I am not even sure which version of Imagemagick to get seeings that I do not know any programming language. Think I have a issue with Inkscape

But not sure, a week or so ago I noticed a problem but kept working with it, I don't remember it from before so may be I just noticed it, who knows, but here is the problem, This is the steps, open Inkscape Change to landscape and letter Select outline mode Import Pic or image, Here is the problem, The pic does not show, I just get a box with arrows, if I then go and choose normal my pic shows ( I honestly don't remember it doing this before) so may be I should be selecting normal till after I do that trace bit map, is so that fine, but the real problem is below. Then I make a bitmap copy Then trace bitmap. But them my other issue is, if I move the box with the picture at all, the picture inside the box moves so that you only see parts of the images, like the box is rolling around over different sections, its very annoying, and don't remember it doing that before, I have uninstalled it and restarted and reinstalled and it is still doing the same thing, I am running 44.1 as I had loaded 45 before, and it has a know bug with saving, so I removed it, Am I just loosing it, or is there a problem with my Inkscape. Problem with Inkscape 0.45.1 on Gentoo

Since performing a recent upgrade on Gentoo (which included updating a LOT of core libraries, as well as upgrading Inkscape from 0.43 to 0.45.1), I've had problems with fonts when importing SVG files. An example of the output is: http://www.msl.ri.cmu.edu/~gch/2007/inkscape-problem/ Basically, I have a workflow where I export SVGs from Matlab, then make minor changes to the figure in Inkscape, and then export an EPS graphic which is used for scientific publication. Currently, it seems like the imported fonts are being very messed up, like all text bits being centered at one point, etc. You can see it in the figure above. The same file opens fine with Mozilla Firefox. I realize that, given that a lot of libraries were recently updated on my machine, this may not be an inkscape problem. What other packages could be causing this? I do not see problems with any other programs on my computer ... Thanks, and I hope I can get this fixed soon! libxml2 and autopackage

Hi folks, I'm trying to use the perspective tool with .46 installed with autopackage on Ubuntu Gutsy. Inkscape complains that I don't have libxml2 but I do, so I'm guessing it doesn't know because it's an autopackage install? If so, is there a way to convince Inkscape that I do have libxml2 and tell it where it is? Thanks, Matt

can't save as dxf

When I try saving a plain SVG file into DXF format, Inkscape locks up on me. This happens with .45.1 on my Mac PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz w/ 1GB RAM 10.4.11 w/ 11 GB free and with the 27 October autopackage version on Xubuntu Linux 7.10 with Celeron D 2.93 GHz with 512 MB RAM. No other problems.

Fedora Package Maintainer

Hello, Denis Leroy e-mail me off list and mentioned that he's no longer interested in maintaining the Fedora package of Inkscape. If there is any other Fedora packagers that are willing to pick it up, that'd be great. what is the best way to include Inkscape graphics into LaTeX documents?

I have several options: 1 - export as a large png and then include that: works, but it's not optimal (not scale-free, for instance) 2 - export as eps: somehow, I can't ever get the graphics to fit in the figure block that I create. The image is always way too big (i.e. it's not properly scaled to fit in). 3 - export as pdf: same problem as eps. Would it help to define a page border or limits that exactly wraps the entire drawing? My drawings are usually larger than the page limits. If so, it would be great to have such a checkbox when exporting to pdf or eps: create page border to fit drawing. Any help appreciated. including art in a text block?

Hi all, I'd like to include svg art in a text block. Something like: A-->B ...where '-->' is an arrow that I draw using the line tool. I would like that art to flow with text, staying always between the A and the B, even when I change the text. Is this possible under inkscape? (Note I don't just want to use arrows, so the solution of using a font with an arrow character won't address my problem). Do I need to create a custom font with the relevant art in it, or is there an easier solution? Thanks very much! -Tom

export to bitmap not working

I just installed 0.45 and I have a problem. I tried exporting my page, a flyer, to pgn, but it did not work. My flyer has many different text objects and one imported jpeg. Now, when I exported it to bitmap the resulting png it was totally black EXCEPT for the imported jpeg, it was correct. But again, the rest of the page is totally black. Why is the export not working correctly? tj

Maarten van der Velde In Windows XP I see them as real regular thumnails in the Windows Explorer. Problem is, they don't scale. So, using a 128x128 thumbnail size, my 32x32 icons stay insignificantly small in the upper left corner. But it is great help browsing them. I installed the player, but I only see the svg icons and not thumbnails. Also each time I tried the player it kept crashing. With the message of Renesis player has encountered and error and needs to close. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better pen pal. XICC support

I finished getting base XICC support in. It works for me with two monitors, including changing dynamically as profiles are attached or removed or as windows are moved across displays. Give things a run through and see how it goes.

bold some words issue in OSX

Hi all, I need to bold some words in a text object. This works fine on Linux & Win, but under OSX (10.4.10 & X11) i can't even have bold in Verdana. This Wiki FAQ looks related: wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ # 3.10 Inkscape does not see some of the fonts (Mac OSX) but seems problematic (i use FireFox a lot). Is there a way to overcome this issue? install some fonts in X11? or maybe compiling inkscape to run without X11? thanks in advance, iuri

I just checked and it seems irfanview can (with a plugin) handle svg files - it has a thubnail/folder browser -- check it out. :: I confirm Irfanview has an SVG plugin, and it works just fine (although filled areas look funny) Cédric

That's actually what linux does.. If you just need to do that and no fast integration of that with other works, you could at least try a live version of .. ubuntu (the one I'm sure is doing this..) Looking for tutorial on editing the source of SVG files

Inskcape Users, I'm creating a bunch of line art drawings in SVG that I will then edit within PHP to do some dynamic transformations before displaying on the web. I'm trying to find a readable and helpful set of instructions on how to manipulate groups of objects to do the following: Scale group with X and Y proportioned Scale in X or Y separately flip on vertical axis Refill colour on all group elements jitter slightly points in group overlay SVG files onto one another So far I've been able to figure out how to change the color on one object, but not on a group. Outside of the very technical W3C documentation, I'm not finding much in the way of user friendly tutorials.
