ABLEConf this weekend in AZ (and a request for images)

Hey all, This Saturday, September 20, 2008 in Tempe, AZ (USA) the first ever ABLEConf will be taking place. I will be doing a presentation as well as Q&A session on Inkscape there (in addition to the many other speakers that will be there that day). If you are in AZ I'd recommend coming if possible. Additionally, if you are in AZ and not in the Metro Phoenix area, people from around the state are trying to arrange ride shares to reduce the cost for everyone making a trip. To find out more about the conference, the location, and the ride sharing go to http://www.ableconf.com/ Additionally, I was asked to put together a gallery of images created with FLOSS tools. So far I have mostly gathered illustration and some design work from some Inkscape users via deviantart, however a lot of people have not responded to messages (a lot of people don't log in as much as they used to). So... that leads to the following request: If you have any images created/edited/composited with any FLOSS tools such as Inkscape, The GIMP, Krita, Karbon14, Blender, Scribus, or your other favorite open source apps please get in contact with me directly. We'd love to display your work and credit you appropriately (it's a great way to get free advertising if you're looking for contract work). Note that were looking for Illustrations, Design (web, logos, marketing materials, etc), diagrams, blueprints, photography (obviously color corrected, manipulated, etc), industrial or trade related images, and the list could go on. A focus of the conference and this image gallery is to show the small businesses how versatile and powerful the tools available are. JPG-Import

Hi, I mostly use the newest builds from inkscape.modevia.com/win32/ For some time now I'm not able to import JPGs bigger than 30 kb into Inkscape. I first have to save them as PNGs, then I can import the images. The last build with which the JPG-import worked normally, was 19770 from august 30. Is this a known thing, or is it a misbehaviour just on my machine? Regards, Hago

OT? SMIL seems dead, alternatives?

I registered with smil@...2562... I was notified of my acceptance but my questions but they were never posted. There is no SMIL player in the Ubuntu repositories. I don't really want to manually compile one, or use a windows based one, or pay for one. SMIL just seems unsupported. From what I have read, streaming video has made SMIL less desirable. I don't have any real experience with it but it looks like a great idea. I would love to be able to use this to animate my SVGs and to control the audio. I could convert the video after to another format for mass viewing. Is there another alternative to SMIL?, something that can be used to dictate the timing of individual images and audio files? Sorry if this is off topic-Patrick

Windows printing problem

Some time shortly after the Devlibs update, the windows printing went wierd again. To test I drew a simple rectangular object of 1/2 a page or so and saved it. Then I printed it to a pdf pseudo printer to generate a pdf, first using vector printing, then bitmap. The svg is fine, the bitmap pdf is fine, but the vector pdf comes out scaled down to approx 40% of the original. I tried this with the latest svn to make sure it wasn't fixed and the problem is still there. I tried to install that extension in inkscape 0.47svn but it refuses to work. Apparently the .inx formatting changed and the extension hasn't a valid code for the new inkscape. Could you please ask the autor of the script to fix it? I'd really like to test it since CMYK output is one of the things that are keeping me from adopting inkscape as my main (and only) vector illustration application for print. I'd love to see this extension as part of inkscape. A separated CMYK tiff exporter using the output of this script would be terrific. I'd also like to know if the CMS code is taken in account to do the separations. If not, maybe the separate+ GIMP plugin would be a good place to start.

SVG web kick start?

This might be a really dumb idea but here goes....... I wrote a script in Python using urllib2 to retrieve data I need for my business. I wonder if we could create a scraperbot(and I would need help) that would read the text component of SVG only sites. Perhaps we could then mirror all this data somewhere else so that the search engines would index it? I bet this would not count as duplicate content as the first SVG site was not indexed anyways. In effect I guess what I am proposing is a mini-me-google bot, if the search engines won't index it we could do this for them. -Patrick

Animation via png frames from Inkscape

Hi, I have been thrashing around the net looking for a solution and thought to ask here because I can't get no satisfaction ;) I want to draw the frames of a small animation (ajax throbber) with Ink. Ideally I would do this: 1. Draw the frames - all on one layer. Use tricks like interpolate etc. 2. Select everything and press *magic button* which would a. Split each object to it's own layer. So I can at least pull it into Gimp and animate/export from there. OR b. Allow me to export each to a png *without* anything in the background so I can go directly to imagemagick to make the final gif. The problem with things as I find them now (and I hope I am missing the obvious) is that exporting includes stuff that's underneath the bounding box. I want a clean single object/layer in my PNG per frame, not one including all the stuff around/behind it. A kind of 'batch export each item while hiding *all* others each time' option. Any hope ? \d
