Best Practices for making maps

Hello all, At the suggestion of a friend, I have downloaded and installed Inkscape on my home PC running Ubuntu. What I would like to use this program to do is to create maps. The maps in question would be maps of a fantasy world (like what you would find on the inside cover of a copy of The Hobbit). Inkscape looks like it would be able to pull this off fairly well, but I wanted to run the idea by the list to see if anyone had done this before. If so, do you have any suggestions on how to make the experience easier? I figure I can't be the first person to do this, so... Also, how hard is it to make an object that is reusable? For instance, if I made a really cool graphic that represented a castle, how could I easily reuse it in multiple maps? Different style when printing using filter effects

Hi! Im wondering, if is it possible, what many CAD application has, namely when I print the drawing, it applies different style and not the normal one. Im thinking like: When viewing vs. when printing(exporting as pdf) black ->black red -> black yellow -> dotted line green -> dot line dot line etc Maybe a button or a menu item to apply the alternate style (before exporting as pdf) and after it, to remove. Or similar to the viewing possibilities (this one would be the best solution so far, but require programming skills): -Normal -Outline -Simplified/Technical/Black&White I think it would be useful for the drawing community too, for ex. somebody need to design a logo in color and grayscale (or when printing in black and white). As a short term solution I think Filter effects is the easiest solution (no programming required). Can somebody help if is it possible or where can I start? new autopackage install - no icons in toolbars

Hello all. 0.46 Development Version available as Autopackage or ZeroInstall?

People, I am hanging out for v0.46 but have had problems building the svn version in the past (Fedora 6/7 - now on 8) - can I get v0.46 via Autopackage or ZeroInstall somehow/somewhere? (Sorry for the duplicate post -- first msg was sent before I was subscribed) I have some files in Illustrator's AI format (from Illustrator version 8 I believe). According to the Inkscape wiki, only AI version 9 or later can be opened by Inkscape. Does anyone know of a conversion tool that can open my v8 AI files and convert them into a format that Inkscape can open? Thanks, Michael

Equation Graphing (like geg) in Inkscape?

People, I would like to able to produce graphs from equations like geg (Graphical Equation Grapher - uses gtk): http://www.infolaunch.com/~daveb/ A found a suggestion that this is possible in inkscape: http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TufteStylePresentation but I can't find any more info about how to do this - can someone give me some info? Ideally it would be great for Inkscape to be able to read a script with the list of equations (using some acceptable syntax) and plot them along with axes, grids, area selection, zoom etc. geg has limitations wrt displaying grids, exporting to PDF etc. It seems that this would be useful addition to Inkscape? Using textures

Ok, I tried creating some textures to fill in various items in an inkscape drawing that I'm using to test. I created the textures in GIMP and saved them as PNGs. Performance has been abyssmal, even with small numbers of polygons. Is there a different way I'm supposed to be doing this? Will --------------------------------- Never miss a thing.
