Adding Fonts

I am running Inkscape on both Windows XP and Debian Linux. Is there a way to add fonts to the program? I couldn't see anything in the menus or help that discussed this. (Although I could have missed it.) How do you add fonts to Inkscape under the two different systems, and what font types/formats are supported? Thanks, Landon

XML Editor Units

I finally got a couple of books on SVG and started to use the XML Editor feature in Inkscape. I've been using Inkscape for a couple of years now, but never messed with the XML Editor. I'm confused about one part of the XML Editor, however, and I wanted to ask about it. I usually have my documents set up to work with the units in inches. However, I noticed the XML Editor was using a different unit value. Why is there a difference, and what unit is the editor using? I'd like to use the same units in my drawing as are displayed in the XML editor. Thanks, Landon

compilation problem on Ubuntu Warthy-Warthog

Although configure script does not give any errors I get an error during the make operation. The error starts with the following lines: In file included from ui/dialog/dialog-manager.cpp:21: ui/dialog/align-and-distribute.h:93: error: syntax error before `;' token In file included from ui/dialog/transformation.h:23, from ui/dialog/dialog-manager.cpp:34: application/application.h:51: error: syntax error before `*' token In file included from ui/widget/unit-menu.h:16, from ui/widget/scalar-unit.h:19, from ui/dialog/transformation.h:25, from ui/dialog/dialog-manager.cpp:34: Then follows a millions of other errors, but they might all be due the first error. I checked line 93 of align-and-distribute.h and it defines a Gtk variable. I have both gtkmm-2.0 and gtkmm-2.4. I appreciate any help on fixing this problem. Thanks.

Text Background Color

Hello, I am wanting to create highlighted text (i.e. have a background color). I've read that the SVG standard does not support this, so I was wondering if there were any work arounds possible like creating a rectangle that just matches the bounding box of the text or something like that? I'd like for this to be a dynamic solution (i.e. if I change the text I don't have to manually change the rectangle, too). Does anyone know how to do this? Inkscape thrashed my user account? Probably not, but...

For the record, I don't think Inkscape *did* thrash my user account, but the problem occurred while I was using it and I thought it would be foolish not to mention it... on the off-chance that there was a connection. I was running the 200510151203 autopackage developer's build. I had selected a bunch of text and pressed the Alt+I key combination to make it italic. Immeditely on doing that, Inkscape disappeared (no error message, nothing). I also noticed that the wallpaper I'd set up on my account disappeared, and I couldn't load any new applications, nor could I exit my session. (In other words, the mouse could move around but it couldn't actually do anything else). I had to ctrl+alt+backspace to restart X, then I rebooted. After that, I was unable to log in to my user account -- after entering in my password, the login prompt would disappear, it would try to load something, then it would boot me back out to the login prompt. I logged into my root account and tried to figure out what happened. I have no idea what happened, to be honest, but it appears as though all user accounts were good and messed up by that crash. Creating a new user account from root and trying to log into that caused the same reaction. That last bit is why I'm pretty sure Inkscape didn't do anything. I was running it in my user account, which means that it shouldn't have touched anything anywhere else, right? So it's more likely that something else occurred when I hit that key combination, and it's only coincidental. Still, I wanted to mention it just in case... Christopher B. Wright (wrightc@...537...)
