First, I'd like to apologize to Bulia Byak for getting huffy about his earlier post on this topic -- it was dumb of me to interpret it in such a negative way. This issue has been the subject of three bug reports on the Sourceforge bug tracker: 1014460 1071596 1082762 Wolfiq's patch, which caused rotation of PS/EPS output when the width was greater than the height, has caused problems for dlehn, Jan, Erik Jonsson, and me. I think the fact that people keep reporting it as a bug -- on Sourceforge, and here on the mailing list -- indicates that there's a serious problem because of the patch. Although the patch produces the behavior that was expected by someone like wolfiq, who intentionally did File>New>...landscape, the behavior seemed incorrect and mysterious to the rest of us, who had been using Inkscape to produce small figures for inclusion in LaTeX documents. I've written a patch for the patch, which is intended to provide the behavior that Wolfiq wants, while fixing the problem for the rest of us. The patch is given at the end of this e-mail. I would like to emphasize that the original patch produces a real showstopper bug for those of us who needed to produce output that was wider that it was tall -- right now there is no way whatsoever to produce the correct (wide) PS/EPS output with inkscape. In the long term, the right solution would probably be to add a portrait/landscape bit to the SVG file. - The bit should be set to landscape if the user creates the file using File>New>...landscape. - There should be a way to control the bit using the GUI. - The rotation should also apply to bitmap printing, not just PS/EPS. - The Print and Save As dialogs should probably also allow the rotation to be turned on or off. However, my C++ and GTK skills probably are not up to the task of making these changes. Exporting/printing independent layers with Inkscape 0.4?

I have designed exhibition plans using Inkscape's new "layers" feature - editing is done in composed picture, but exports/prints are usually needed only from chosen independent layer(s). The design process goes well with Inkscape, but I have not found out how to print/export layers independently. Is it not possible, or did I miss something? Thanks, Jukka

pixel sizes

Hi to all, I'm very happy with Inkscape's features, but missing one: How can I switch view to pixel 1:1? When I import image e.g. 200x100px, I can't see it 1:1. Would be very useful for web design development. thanx anyway :) Michal

Grid and adjustment

Sorry if "adjustment" is not the word here, I'm translating from Spanish. If not, I refer to the magic that snaps the cursor to the grid when resizing an object, or creating a new one, for example. The issue is the following: in a previous version (.38), I used to switch the grid on and off with "#" (vry, very handy) and with the grid, also I was switching on and off the "adjustment". This way, I could work always with the grid & snap, but when wanted to draw freely I just switched with "#". Now, with "#" the only thing that goes on and off is the grid, but not the "adjustment" (it adjusts to nothing, because the grid is not drew, but it still adjusts). This is very annoying to me, because to be able to work freely and back, and need to go the config, change the settings, and then again to go back. Is this intended or a bug? Page splits

I'm not really a heavy user but I love Inkscape. I have a friend I mentioned Inkscape to and while we were having a look at it he asked if there was a way to split an svg document in pages. Inkscape 0.40 - error importing AI files

When I am importing .AI files this error message appears: ** (inkscape:9542): CRITICAL **: file document.cpp: line 511 (void sp_document_set_uri(SPDocument*, const gchar*)): assertion `document != NULL' failed Pleas help, how can I solve it? I have thousand .AI files which I could open in 0.39. Is downgrade only one solution? (OS: Gentoo unstable, same expirience with self compiled inkscape 0.40cvs and 0.40 stable in Slackware current) Thanks Martin Grohman

Is the rotation meant to be a temporary thing until landscape mode is better supported in Inkscape, or is it meant to be something that would be a permanent behavior of Inkscape? I also don't understand what workaround I can use if I don't want the rotation. It seems as though there is no possible way to generate postscript output that is *not* rotated. On the other hand, for someone who *wants* his postscript to print sideways, because there is no other way to fit it on the page, there is a clear workaround: use Inkscape to rotate the picture.

I came across this bug report earlier, but it didn't seem relevant to me; it seemed to have something to do with explicitly choosing landscape mode in a menu, which I did not do. 2. Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but to me, your suggestion that I submit my patch comes off as brusque and dismissive. This is inkscape-user, not inkscape-devel.
