towards a less confusing/congested Objects dialog (auto-expanding layers/groups, hide HL column)

Hi Friends, I'm just having my first look at the new Objects dialog in 0.92pre2(beta) on Windows 7, 64-bit, sp1 (exe installer). I was about to submit a wishlist item on Launchpad, but I think it might be more useful to have more of a discussion, because there's a good chance I don't understand all the issues. First, thanks developers for this awesome feature. For the most part, I LOVE it!! I notice that whenever I select an object, (when the Objects dialog is open), the layer where the object resides is expanded, whether I want to edit the object or not. If the selected object is a group, the group is expanded as well. So just looking around the canvas at a couple of objects, the dialog is already scrolling. I find it quite confusing with everything expanded. And this is still a relatively small file, with 4 layers and 25 to 30 objects. Of course I realize the purpose of this new dialog is to help make things less confusing. But I just mean the visual appearance is confusing. I can understand how this automatic expanding of layers can be helpful. But how can Inkscape know why I've selected an object? For example, when I'm helping someone in the forum, I'm not planning to edit the file at all - just look at it. I wonder if it would work to make the automatic expanding optional (in Inkscape Prefs)? Or, I wonder if there would be any way to make it so that whenever you select an object in a different layer from the last selected object, the layer of the last selected object is collapsed, and the layer of the new selected object is expanded. Could that work? Different from expanding layers, I see the HL column, with all those tiny red color chips represent the highlight color for the path outline. If the user has disabled the path outline, could this column be hidden? Thanks for comments :-) brynn

Hi Friends, I've just downloaded 0.92pre2(beta) 64-bit for Windows (exe installer) so I could dabble around to potentially submit something for the About Screen Contest. When I enabled the Pen/Bezier tool for the first time, it was automatically in BSplinePath mode. I suggest, for both the sanity of new users and the sanity of people who regularly help new users, that in the stable version it should instead be automatically set to Regular Bezier mode (or whatever the user had been using previously....although I don't think the tool mode is part of preferences.xml). I know that you probably want to promote interesting new features, but I'm afraid this would be seen as more of an annoyance, than promoting the new feature. This is one of the reasons that so many people are hestitant to upgrade their computer programs. Because the new versions *always* work differently, and people have to waste time trying to restore their program's previous behavior (or make their program look like it used to) (or sometimes they have to actually learn new things to be able to keep using it). Please don't make Inkscape upgrades more annoying than fun, and find a better way to promote new features. Maybe something like a What's New page on the website -- that's not the same thing as Release Notes, and only covers new features. I'd be glad to help write such a page. Or maybe *do* use the Release Notes page, and make a link from inside Inkscape to it....like maybe in the File menu or Help menu, have a What's New item. I'm sure there could be several options to promote new features without risking annoying users. And by the way developers, thanks for all the cool new features! HSL tab in 0.92pre2(beta)

Hi Friends, There seems to be some drastic changes in the HSL tab of the Fill and Stroke dialog. I've looked through the Release Notes page, but I don't see any info. Did I just not see it? These are my questions: The top bar used have colors from red on the left to red on the right, and every other color in between. And if you wanted precision, you could use the numbers from 0 to 255 to set the color. But now, the top bar is something else entirely. It goes from white on the left, to some 2nd color in the middle (red) to some 3rd color on the right (aqua). But *none* of those 3 colors are the color of the object (which I initially set from the palette along the bottom). If I slide the bar, it doesn't change the color I set to white, the 2nd color or the 3rd color. It sets some other odd colors. How can I adjust the color now - especially if I don't want to use the palette to start with? There's now a new 5th bar at the bottom, under the Alpha bar. It goes from white on the left, to the middle color, which is not the color of the object, back to white on the right. Adjusting that bar seems to have no effect on the color of the object at all. Changing the number value doesn't do anything either. What is it for? The bars on the HSL tab used to be labeled, like the bars are still labeled on the RGB and CMYK tabs. If they were labeled, it might at least give me a clue. Thanks for your help :-) brynn

looking for a forum host

Hi Friends, As some of you know, a small committee has been investigating the possibility of creating a new "official" Inkscape forum. All along, we've been pretty much expecting that OSUOSL would host it for us (since they already host our website and wiki). However, after an initial request (nearly 6 weeks ago), an updated request (~10 days later), and a 3rd contact (which was just last week) we still have no response from them. Assuming they would notify us, even if the answer is 'no', we think they are probably still working on it, and have not made a decision yet. But we're starting to think the answer might well be 'no', and we're starting to research about other ways to host this forum. So we want to tap the resources of the whole community, and ask if anyone knows of any either open-source-friendly webhost besides OSUOSL, or maybe some kind of program which might pay hosting fees for an open source project (in the event we can't find a free host). Note that the so-called "free webhosting" sites would probably not be acceptable, since they usually accomplish making it free, by loading the site up with advertising. One idea which might be feasible, is setting up some kind of crowd funding, to create the capital for some kind of money-market fund or something like a trust, whose income would pay the monthly fee. The reason why it's such a big "might" is because it would take some time for this fund to reach the point where it could cover the fees (and we hope to get the forum online much sooner than that would take). I've offered, and I'm sure a lot of people in the community might volunteer to pay or help to pay the fees. But that puts us in a similar situation which we're trying to remedy with this effort (i.e. a single owner potentially disappearing). I would consider this to be a last resort. Has anyone heard of any webhost that might meet our needs; or maybe some kind of program which would pay the hosting fees? Thank you very much, brynn (for the committee)

Placement of render extension output

Hi all, I'm using the render/latex extension and the output is usually placed at some position of the drawing area pretty far from the image. I would like to know: i. If there is a way to shrink the drawing area so that it just fits the image without extending "infinitely". ii. If there is a way to control the position of the output of render extensions. iii. measure curved lines for pap or scatter

Hi Friends, Lately I've been attempting to use the Scatter extension to create a pattern along path type of effect, on curved lines. I use Scatter because it creates very little distortion while pap creates a lot of distortion around even mild curves. But there is something about the Scatter extension that doesn't work so well, and that's the offsets. Maybe it's because they are curves, that sometimes the normal offset behaves more like tangential, and vice versa. In any case, I'm trying to come up with some way to use it more effectively on curved lines, and I thought, if only there were some way to measure the curved lines, I could set the size of the pattern units, so patterned path perfectly fits the path (in whole pattern units). Of course I could make the calculations on something like a circle, because either I can remember the formula or look it up. I don't know any easy way to measure randomly curved paths in Inkscape. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who has run into this problem. I wonder if anyone has found any effective approach to this problem? I'd appreciate if you could share any tips! Making Screen Units and SVG Units the same

People, When I create a new image, I get a page that, in Landscape mode, is 800 units wide and 600 units high. I know that the origin for the SVG y-axis is at the top-left of the screen and the positive direction is down and the reverse is the case for the Inkscape y-axis and I am not concerned for this exercise about printed output. I just want the absolute units on the screen to correspond to the absolute units in the SVG file that Inkscape produces - is this possible? (I couldn't find anything in the program or Googling . .) Hello Henry, We have an Inkscape User mailing list that is a great place to ask about questions like this, I went ahead and CC'd it here. It is a great place for finding info on using Inkscape. I think that your problem here is probably related to the origin. Inkscape was designed with a Print mindset, putting the axis in the bottom left corner instead of a computer graphics mindset where it is in the upper left corner. SVG doesn't match that. So that means that Inkscape is translating the positions from the GUI to the SVG document. Good luck! As a reward for my effort, you have taken artwork which does not belong to you, and in addition you removed my editor priviledges. I cannot trust, or work with you again. Transparency bug with clipping ?

Dear all, I'm working on a poster (which needs to be delivered tomorrow...), and when attempting to export it as pdf I realized that some transparency was lost. After quite some time spent trying to figure it out, it turns out that it's most likely because of clipping. Transparent objects in a clipped group loose their transparency when exported, while they keep it if their group is not clipped (e.g. when I ungroup the clipped group). Please see the file attached. Try to export it as pdf, with all defaults. You should see that the circles on the main map at the top are transparent, while those who belong to a group that was clipped (for instance in the zoomed map of Europe at the top, or in both maps at the bottom). This looks a lot like a bug to me. Do you know how I can fix that ? I need the clipped version of the map of course, the other one won't fit in my layout... Thank you in advance for your help. Reporting Inkscape crash - howto?

Hi, I'm on Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit and Inkscape is very crashy. I even moved to the stable PPA packages and it's the same. Could someone point me to where I can best make a bug report? Problem/Bug with printerdialog (win64)

The printerdialog in Inkscape always give me 'Letter' as papersize, but my printer uses 'A4'. I think the printerdialog should use the default settings from printer properties. Any chance to change the default papersize in printerdialog?

PDF to AI/DXF/AI/EMF/PLT - use PSTOEDIT

I need to convert from one cantankerous program to another. For output I have only PDF. For input I have a range of options - AI/DXF/AI/EMF/PLT. Inkscape has DXF both via built in and also the BetterDXF plugin. It can also do SVG of course which can then be converted again to AI potentially with pstoedit. Inkscape has commandline options for batch processing but not for DXF AFAIK. It tok me a while to figure that out. DXF export is support but via GUI. Anyway, the simplest thing is to use pstoedit rather than Inkscape for this task. I'm just putting this out there on the hope that this gets picked up by Google when people are searching for converting vector files for free because at the moment Inkscape is coming up as a suggestion in many search results and I ended up taking a lot of time trying to figure out how to write a batch file when at the end of the day I should have been using pstoedit. AI worked better since DXF will need to you tell it the scale (i.e. mm or cm). Successful command for me was: .\pstoedit input.pdf -f plot-ai out.ai Hope this helps someone out there

new forum and committee

Hi Friends, I just realized I forgot to post this on the user list (posted to dev list few days ago). In case someone doesn't know. Because InkscapeForum.com's admin has all but abandoned the forum, the Inkscape Board voted to form a committee to evaluate the possibility of an official forum (https://sourceforge.net/p/inkscape/mailman/message/35137071/). (Look for short News item, in inkscape.org soon.) They asked me to chair it, and I agreed. Because InkscapeForum.com could disappear at any time (for all we know) I posted a topic on Inkscape Community, where anyone/everyone can discuss what features they would like to see in a new official forum. http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=355.0 If anyone doesn't want to register a new account (I understand, I have sooo many passwords) they could use either the Contact form (in the menu bar near top of page), or email, and I'll post their comments for them. After 1 week or so more discussion time, or until the discussion fades away, the committee with start its work. If anyone is interested in participating on the committee, please let me know what email address you'd like to use. extension grid crashing (make bug report?)

Hi Friends, I'm trying to use Extensions menu > Render > Grids > Isometric, but it keeps crashing Inkscape. It's always when I'm using the Live Preview. Sometimes it crashes when I uncheck the preview (which I think might be a known bug for many extensions). But it's crashing otherwise as well. When I try to adjust the the variables, while Live Preview is on, usually the crash happens while I'm trying to change the 3rd value. Error messages : First there's that one that's something about Runtime and some "unusual way". Then it's the message box that shows where the backup was saved. I've searched LP for existing reports, but didn't find anything. But because I don't usually have very good luck with searching, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a report about this. Otherwise, I guess I should make one? This is on Windows 7, 64-bit and Inkscape 0.91, 32-bit, exe installer. I suspect it probably also happens in the 64-bit version. I'll test it right after post this. It's happening in brand new blank files, with nothing else but the preview, on the canvas. If it's not already reported, is there any other kind of documentation I should provide? Thank you very much, brynn PS - Oh, interesting! Doesn't seem to be happening in the 64-bit version! TA :-)

Why does Inkscape require dbus?

Hi all, I just found out Inkscape has a dependency on dbus, and as a guy trying to minimize dbus use and eventually kick it off my computer, I have to ask why it's needed by Inkscape. Inkscape is a translator back and forth between an enhanced SVG XML and a hand drawing. What need is there for dbus? I have an interesting use case senario for Inkscape. I like to be able to print/display text from a specific field from the embeded EXIF data in an image.Has anyone ever done something like this, how did you achieve it?

I note that Inkscape fails to render guide colours when set via SVG editor. Would someone have a try, edit a sodipodi: guide color attribute value, and confirm if it is just me with this issue. Thanks. -u

New video feature: Measure over Items

Hi to all. Here is my last video about meassuring items. Any way measure still works as usual, this is a plus on hover. I think his target is 0.93 because introduce some strings. Dont mark to merge because this last thing. I couldent put the music I want to this video, anyway undertones is the best substitute. R&R.

The latest version of guides... has been uloaded. It includes a feature for switching between operating modes. In addition to Custom mode the user can now select the Target operating mode. In target mode guides are drawn to a selection target, or to the page as the target. Target mode can be used to draw perpendicular guides only. Enjoy! -u
