Simplify inkscape transforms

Hi there, I'm new to this list which I found after failing to get onto inkscapeforum.com (which seems to be dead). I've been looking at inkscape/svg for a while now and I'm considering using it in application development using Python/Javascript. I find inkscape very useful for setting up the graphics and editing them but it leaves translation and other transforms in place on groups etc. after you move them about. This has two issues: i) It slows things down as the transforms must be applied every time the svg is presented even though they always yield the same result. ii) It makes it hard for code manipulating the SVG DOM because the transformations add a layer of obfuscation. Furthermore, browser implementations (chrome & firefox) seem to be buggy regarding SMIL animations on paths if these transforms are left in - they honour the transforms for the path itself but do not honour them for the associated animation posititions. I need to simplify these transforms out of the SVG. To rephrase: I create a rectangle in Inkscape and move it around - the x and y attributes update as expected. I stick a text object over the rectangle and group them together. Now I move the group and I get a "transform = translate(188.98349, -58.129834)" attribute associated with the group rather than the x,y positions being updated as I want. I need to be able to click a button (or set a preference) so that these static transforms (which accumulate) are applied to the attributes and then removed such that the svg is left in a simpler but graphically identical state. Is there some 'standard' or known way to achieve this simplification that I am missing? I will happily RTFM if pointed in the right direction - 'I've tried googling to no avail. Hi all, Peter 'Cafuego' Lieverdink has patched a compiler bug that was preventing Inkscape for building for older Ubuntu versions. https://launchpad.net/~cafuego/+archive/inkscape >From the notes: PPA description This PPA contains daily automated Inkscape builds. These builds are generated directly from the Inkscape trunk on Launchpad and may contain bugs. Use this PPA to test Inkscape. If you need a stable version, please install Inkscape from the main Ubuntu repositories. Changes to the Inkscape source trigger a compiler bug on the i386 version of Ubuntu 10.04 ("Lucid") and 10.10 ("Maverick"), so Lucid and Maverick packages in this repository are built with a patched C compiler. Note that recent changes to Inkscape mean that the latest version can no longer be built on an unmodified 10.04 LTS ("Lucid") system. This PPA now contains backported versions of the pixman and cairo packages, which are required to run Inkscape trunk on Lucid. Please be aware that these system libraries will be installed from this PPA and that these versions have not been extensively tested with other Ubuntu applications that might use them. On Lucid, xulrunner-1.9 conflicts with this PPA. Paths joining two objects and three paths to one node.

Hello, I have two questions: 1) Is there a way to join two objects using a path so that when I move the objects, the path's endpoints get dragged around? I frequently draw planar graphs and this ability would be useful. 2) I suspect there's some vector-graphics theory reason why it's impossible, but is it possible to have three paths emerge from one node? Is there an aesthetic way to fake it if there isn't? Thanks for any hints/answers/tutorials anybody can provide, John B. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Things in the existing list that I am strongly in favor of are these: 1. ISSUE-2354: Consider adding a 'inverse' value to clip-rule 2. ISSUE-2355: Consider allowing the 'clip' property to reference any element, not just 'clipPath' 3. Shared paths. I would also like the ability to reference a "group object (<g>) inside a clipPath definition. Inkscape already supports this feature but firefox and others don't support it because the SVG 1.1 specification does not require it. The SVG 1.1 specification states: "SVG supports the following clipping/masking features: clipping paths, which uses any combination of 'path', 'text' and basics shapes...". Unfortunately this definition excludes "<g>" elements. I added some more rules for TEXT and TSPAN elements. PATHS, LINES, POLYLINES, & POLYGONS: -transform coordinates of all points -do not transform line thickness CIRCLES & ELLIPSES -transform center point and radii -do not transform line thickness RECTANGLES -transform location of corners -transform the radii of any rounded corners -do not transform line thickness TEXT & TSPAN -transform absolute positioning attributes ("x" & "y"). -do not transform relative positioning attributes ("dx" & "dy"). -do not scale font size -do not scale letter spacing, word spacing, etc. Perhaps a transform attribute could have multiple flags which would allow some flexibility for text handling. e.g. there should be a choice of: a) scaling everything (the only option we have today) b) scaling everything except line thickness c) scaling everything except line thickness and text d) scaling everything except text It is important that the choice be applied to each transformation separately. Scaling via an explicit "transform" attribute and zooming via a user interface are two completely different things and should be treated as such. Personally I am not excited about having line thickness stay the same size when a user is zooming in and out of a drawing. Zooming out too far would cause elements to overlap. Hi, I've been tasked by the SVG Working group to summarize scaling issues in SVG. What I mean by scaling issues, is things that one perhaps doesn't want scaled when zooming in or out on a drawing. An example would be a non-scaling line width for technical drawings (this has already been accepted for inclusion into SVG 2.0). Inkscape doesn't have any zoom independent features (except for outline mode) but it does include options for when objects are scaled or moved: 1. Scaling stroke width when scaling an object. 2. Scaling rectangle corners with scaling rectangles. 3. Scaling/moving gradients when objects with gradients are moved. 4. Scaling/moving patterns when objects with patters are moved. These would be candidates for non-scaling while zooming. Are there any other cases where non-scaling would while zooming would be of interest? Thanks, Tav

Inkscape presentation flashing object effect (Jessyink / Sozi ...)

Dear list, I am looking to create a presentation using an(y) inkscape plugin, so far I have tried Jessyink and just found Sozi. What I am looking for in particular is to be able to create a /flashing/ effect on appearance, so that when the object first appears, it should flash X times in Y seconds after which it just stays. This is to draw attention to the newly appeared object on a large image. How does one create such a flashing effect on appearance, can this be done with any of the plugins mentioned or others, or maybe it can be directly done in inkscape? Thanks! -- Johnny

HI is there a way to limit, or set, the size a image imports into inkscape (both 0.48 & 0.47)? if a image is created in a graphics program at 300dpi and a size of 6" X 6" it seems to import into inkscape around the 22" X 22" size is there a way to import at the 6" X 6" is was saved as? of course the size will change but is there a way to import at the size it was saved at or set a size to import to Thanks Gaz

Inkscape closes when opening Layers dialog

Hi, I was wondering if someone could help. Im running Ubuntu 11.10 64bit and Inkscape 0.48.2 r9819 (Jul 11 2011). When I open inkscape and try to open the layers dialog, either using the keyboard shortcut (Shift + Ctrl + L) or going to the menu and clicking Layer -> Layers inkscape immediately closes. Running inkscape from the terminal gives the following error: inkscape: symbol lookup error: inkscape: undefined symbol: _ZN3Gtk14TreeViewColumn14get_first_cellEv Could anyone point me in the right direction to solve this please? I like what I see in JessyInk. What I would like to do is attach a short sound tag to each level. I would like something that would play and then exit. I could go to an html page and have it exit after a certain period of seconds but that seems kind of kludgy. Automatically create book covers from Inkscape templates?

Hi all, We at FLOSS Manuals would like to use Inkscape to automatically create PDF images for use as book covers by manipulating a template SVG file. The question is if Inkscape has the needed features and if we know how to use them. Here's an example of what a final book cover would ideally look like: http://tuukka.iki.fi/tmp/example-cover.png The ideal work flow would include an artist downloading an initial template made by a programmer who understands how Inkscape handles layers, flowed text etc. in the SVG level. The artist could modify the template in Inkscape and add it to a template collection. When a book is published, the user would choose a template from the collection and a script would fill in the book name, author, book logo and convert the SVG to PDF. In addition, the script would need to modify the width of the spine (the middle part in the example image) based on the number of pages in the book. Has anyone done anything like this before? Would it be feasible? One specific question would be if it's possible to somehow scale the font size of the book name to meet the specified page width. Contrary to the original subject of this thread, AFAICT the issue does _not_ affect the shape tools (rectangle, ellipse/circle, star/polygon, spiral). ~suv

Hello all Users, I was wondering if anyone was effected by this small bug(if you can call it one): https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171500 Basically it means that if you switch from one tool to another before pressing enter, the shape/path drawn is destroyed. I don't know if it is intentional or not but I am interested in fixing it. Precision of document size.

I want to create a document of 6.125 x 9.25 inches. However the tab for Document properties won't let me insert 6.125, only 6.12. I can use 6.13 for now. But I wonder if there is a setting for three decimal places somewhere? Web pages can be produced in svg by Inkscape. I would like to provide such a page with a video on it. I can use the linking feature to go to e.g. Youtube. The problem is the return path. Hey All, I just realized that apparently my brain was not working right a week and a half ago when announcing everywhere else, I forgot to notify the user list! I apologize greatly! After 5 months of bug fixing and vacation delays out of our control, the Inkscape Community is proud to announce that Inkscape 0.48.2 is out. This is our second bug fix release for 0.48 and it contains over 60 bug fixes to improve stability and functionality on all platforms. Icon Set - 16x16 px - good for laptops

Hi all, for those interested here is a svg file with inskape iconset optimized for 16x16 px, specially useful if you're using a laptop with less resolution. to install the file copy it to "/usr/share/inkscape/icons/" in linux. or "c;/programs/inkscape/share/icons/" in windows. to change the icons size goto: file - inkscape preferences- interface and choose smaller for all toolbars. In Inkscape one can arrive at CMYK-equivalent colors but only if one of the four CMYK factors is zero. Is there any of the standard Inkscape palettes that contains only colors that are convertible to CMYK without significant color shift? interpolation issue in Inkscape

Hi Inkscape community, I have an issue with unwanted / inferior looking interpolation in scaled Inkscape PNG exports. In the case at hand I have a pixel art image that has been converted to SVG using 40px x 40px vector squares for each pixel (whether or not Inkscape is the right tool for playing with pixel art is *not* the question here ;-) ). When such an image is scaled down a little and exported as PNG, it shows some poor interpolation artefacts. These artefacts are less obvious or not present in the actual Inkscape display, but very visible after export. Here is an illustriation of the problem: http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/769/inkscapeinterpolation.png (Please view at original size first to prevent additional interpolation.) Please note that some of these interpolations do not seem to make sense, e.g. using bright grey in the brown / dark red hair of the character. I am very aware that Inkscape may not be the weapon of choice for this kind of operation. Still, my questions: - Is there any way to prevent Inkscape from interpolation / anti-aliasing upon exporting such an image? - If this is an interpolation issue: why does Inkscape use such inappropriate colors? - Shall I file a bug? :) Any hint will be appreciated. Hello! I'm interested in using Inkscape with a stylus on a touch screen and I'm heavily influenced and inspired by articles I've read about Máirín Duffy's use of a Thinkpad x61 to create illustrations for Red Hat: http://blog.linuxgrrl.com/2009/11/08/fedora-12-rocks-on-tablets/ http://mairin.duffy.usesthis.com/ I'm not sure what I would do with Inkscape exactly, maybe make a webcomic as I hinted about here: http://www.webcomicalliance.com/helpful-hints/mac-vs-pc-the-webcomics-editi… . For now, I just want to doodle a bit. Anyway, following Máirín's lead, I guess I'm thinking about buying a Thinkpad X Series Convertible Tablet. As of this writing the model that's available is the X220, but I'm not sure how well it works with Linux and Inkscape. Lenovo doesn't ship the device with Linux pre-installed: http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/xtablet-series/index.html I'm open to other hardware suggestions. On the market right now there's an HP EliteBook 2760p Tablet PC and a Dell Latitude XT3 Tablet PC as well. Basicially, I'm looking for something that will run Linux and Inkscape and let me draw on the screen itself rather than using a Cintiq. Is this a common hardware setup for Inkscape users? Can anyone recommend what device I should buy? I've been using Linux on the desktop for five years (usually something Red Hat-based) but never on a laptop. Thanks! Phil

I know this isn't a very scientific method, but still :-) I'd import the color map to inkscape or GIMP and use the gamut warning to "mask" out of gamut colors. then capture the "masked" palette, then re-create the palette using the captured values. CMYK-Safe colors depend on the output CMYK profile, so it's probably impossible to have a generic "safe" palette without using a specific profile as starting point. I'm pretty sure this isn't the best way to do it (there has to be a programatic way to do it using RGB and CMYK profiles to compile a palette, but I don't know how to do it). IIrc the program Swatchbooker allows to choose profiles to "convert" palettes, but I could never make it work. hth, Gez

I know that Google and perhaps others try to analyze the text in PDF files for purposes of SEO. Does the same hold true for svg? Imprting book cover.

I want to display a book cover. It is currently in pdf form but I can save it in any of a number of other formats. When I saved it in svg (from Scribus) the file was huge and the image was distorted. so that is out. That leaves PDF or a variety of bitmap choices. I am thinking of png or tiff. I am having no luck flowing text into a text frame. Instead I will just create an ordinary rectangle as a shape, highlight both and try flowing into a shape.
