No, I used the ellipse/circle tool and followed the instructions step by step (starting at the upper left corner and draging to the lower right corner within the ststed pixel range) . I've even tried doing the step using a circle and the nodes are still off. I've attached a screen capture for you to see. How did you draw your ellipse? My guess is that you drew a circle, rotated it, and then squeezed it. This is the only way that I can think of to get the nodes at other than 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. Rotating the circle will rotate the ellipse handles to a different orientation. Kidscape (suggestion)

Greetings Among all the good things I found in Inkscape one is that it's very easy to use. But more important it looks easy, so even my 12 years brother took a chance to try drawing vec toons on it with some amount of success (he never did with Corel). This leaded me to think that an Inkscape version for kids (5+) would be a great project. Some changes would be neccessary, such as changing the GUI to make it more more children-friendly (vector eds, like most apps, usually resemble ATMs) by fitting children's tastes, you know, and also removing most complicated features and options. Now, why taking the task? 1) Inkscape would be the first vec ed doing it AFAIK 2) Coming generations would probably try it prior to any other vec ed, thus getting more familiar with it, thus spreading Inkscape 3) It could give Inkscape very good advertising and lots of great chances 4) It would be a great service I translate for some kid orgs so I know where this project could find audience and fit nicely. It's I pity I can't work on it because I have little or no skills on coding and alike stuff at all. My wife is using a Genius Pensketch 12x9 tablet with inkscape and gimp. It's far more affordable than a wacom with similar specifications (resolution, pressure levels, etc). It only lacks the tilt function and the eraser in the pen, but if you're looking for a large tablet for a fraction of the price of a Wacom, imo this is a great choice. It works under linux (not out of the box, but there is a step-by-step tutorial in Ubuntu Forums). You can see what she's doing with that tablet in www.flickr.com/photos/superdd Oh, and btw, someone asked about Cintiq support under linux. Jimmac just bought one and got it to work under linux without problems (there's an installing guide in his blog). Those things are great, but wow, they aren't cheap. :-)

New to Inkscape. Going through tutorials. Stuck on Step 2c of Can of Soup tutorial. Nodes are not at the horizontal or vertical axis and so I can't split the ellipse across the horizontal plane. No Inkscape window in MacOS 10.5.2

I have installed Inkscape-0.45.1-2-UNIVERSAL into Mac OS 10.5.2 with Xquartz 2.1.3. I can NOT get the menu bar or the window. I only get the part of the menu bar that reads "inkscape." Has anyone seen this behavior? Can someone give me direction on how to troubleshoot my installation? PowerMac G5 with 1.5 Gb of memory. TIA Oscar

Save As EPS Brings up Printer Interface

Hi, I've been poking around the site and can't find anything regarding the following oddity. When I moved to Fedora 8 and installed inkscape, I found that whenever I try to save as an eps file, the printer window would come up. This does not happen under windows and has not happened to me before under FC4. Has anyone else found this issue? I'm presuming I'm missing a package somewhere or there is a misconfiguration. Does anyone have any suggestions? inkscape gallery [48 hours later...]

i'm here to inform you about the inkscape gallery's two days in the "official world"... I didnt' receive feedback about my previous mail, but i didn't ask for this, i was only giving news indeed. Now i would like the inkscape user's list to come back talking about inkscape gallery (i will label it just IG starting from now...). I learned so much in the few days in this list and i think the improvements we provided are mostly related to the speeches we had here and i would like to thank you again, even if i cannot do this for each user personally, this is my way to tell how precious was your help. But this is done, we're online now and we have to debate about the present and the future of IG... I would like to see many of you posting drawings, cause we're registering many visitors from all the world and we are really happy about this, but we have still a few (i'm giving a special thank to those ones...)users and drawings on the website. I mean, i know i have to be patient...nothing happens just in one day, but i'd like to involve many of you in this moment, because we have to start thinking about the future of IG and we'd like this list, and anyone interested in, to have a leading role in the development. As you may know we are a small company and i love to say that this is just one of the opensource project we are planning... but obviously, we can't do this without help, and mainly this is not a closed project, this is a work done in the inkscape and opensource software growing purpose. And more, this is done to give the best place to share knowledge, drawing skills, tricks, projects for everyone who uses inkscape. IG is just at the beginning , i keep working adding features, (see this: http://inkscapegallery.net/en/node/142 for the comment notification feature) and fixing some stuffs, trying to enhance IG knowledge and google visibility. We could imagine many improvements, now we have two test environments, and someone already made something. Patrick wrote the code for the licenses validation that is another important improvement in IG and i like to thank him in this list, 'cause he's young but really skilled and he deserves our congratulations. We bought the .com, .it and .org inkscapegallery domains too, and they will work in one or maybe two days. So, i will like you to be the leader in the inkscapegallery growing process and in its future development. My work will be the organization, maybe the supervision (i'm still trying to figure out why didn't i seriously study english...) but you will be the one in charge...if you'd like to. external CSS

I've done some digging, and I saw external CSS support was already planned for two consecutives 'google summer of code', though it is still not possible using them in inkscape, be it classes or even getting them to display properly. I've attached three files, one being the original file with the style attributes inline, it shows quite well in inkscape, the other two being a css file and a svg file with references to this css file. When I open the latter, only a black shield is displayed, as no style information is loaded. Additionally to getting inkscape to at least display the SVG correctly, I'm still pondering on how to implement the creation of the file in inkscape, there should be some possibility to apply a certain style (defined in a css file) to a path, so I wouldn't have to change the SVG file later to apply all styles. At the moment, it would suffice to get Inkscape to display the files correctly, as I still do some tidy-up with the resulting SVG files, so I can also replace the style commands with the correct class definitions... -- cheers, Alex

This is a pre-release, i will inform only the inkscape's communities about that and then, maybe day 28 (it's the nois3lab birthday..) we'll go trying to involve a bigger amount of interested or just curious users and some web magazines, large community websites etc...etc... We'd like you to share this good new everywhere you want, we also need you to spread the inkscape gallery knowledge to let it grows fast. I'm really grateful for the contributions i've received here in the inkscape's user list, i know that many of the last improvements i made were coming from suggestion and even critiques you gave to me. Hello again, i'm sorry i couldn't keep you updated about the inkscape gallery developement but the days i spent here on the list were really useful and i had a work a lot to do what these speeches suggested me to do. I would like to keep track of what happened in the days when we talked about inkscape gallery in various threads in this list that maybe caused troubles to the user who didn't want to read thousands of mail. So: when i came here for the first time inkscape gallery was a project for an inkscape made drawings gallery on the web in an advanced state but still not completely grown. There were a narrowed layout, a bunch of features but it needed content organization and a couple of improvements in both layout stuffs and features. Many of you gave impressions, suggestions even critiques and this was exactly what i needed to come back working to make inkscape gallery better. So what i did in these days? 1)When i left the list i announced the svg upload and the user picture features were added. But then i realized that we needed to work on the content organization, to decrease the scrolling need, to make lighter pages to not overload the cms and the webserver and to decrease the amount of javascripts that were going to slowdown all the site navigation. If you go now to see inkscape gallery you will see: 2)a splash page, bilingual with two main access links, giving you two ways to start using inkscape gallery; 3)"quickstart" and "enter the website". 4)You find a sort of "user guide" with many useful information (i hope...) in pdf linked in a RTFM! button. 5)You don't see the button menu in the splash page but you may show it just by clicking on the + icon in the main menu area. This feature is being used in most of the site sections, to avoid long page scrolling where we thought that the buttons menu was not necessary. 6)We have new blocks called "pop" in some sections. They are showing the most viewed images in the last days. 7)We have a list of avatars (not yet, really...but the tool is there), and we'd like to launch the website with an avatar contest too. You may add your pictures (inkscape made!) to attend to this contest. You may vote on images to make us easy to choose which to include. (we will use all of them in the first stage!). 8)If you see the artists section you have a shortened version of the user profile page. This is meant to hide empty fields and to keep the section meaningful. Please use the "who am i" description field when you create account, cause i think it's nice to have an short user description. I'm not saying that is perfect now, i have a long list of fixes and improvements still pending, i will put this online in the forum. This is the time when we'll look around for someone who'll help us in maintaining and improving the website. We are good in webdesign and we know drupal quite well, but we aren't php developers, and this is what will give us the chance to significantly improve inkscape gallery in the future. Pixel font in Inkscape 45.1

Hi, I'm attempting to user a TrueType pixel font called SuperText which can be found at: http://www.dafont.com/supertext.font …but Inkscape is unable to display it and resorts to changing the font to BitStream Vera Sans instead. Now I've managed to get other pixel font to display nice and crispy like Pixel Arial 11( http:// www.dafont.com/pixel-arial-11.font ) and others some of which I've needed to convert with FontForge to truetype font. So the question is why does SuperText not render even though it's truetype? Thanks, Linus

Hi! My laptop has a 1280x800 screen, and a regular gnome environment (regular Ubuntu 7.10 installation). I have two panel, one at the top of my screen and the other at bottom (tasklist). The problem is, that inkscape has a file menu, a global toolbar, and a tool's toolbar, and the tools' icon(the vertical one at the left). Overall, the inkscape windows is heigher as available screen (so screen_height - (top_panel+bottom+panel)). So when i want to maximize inkscape, it does not do anything. It could be wider (horizontally), but pressing the maximize button cause losing the left and right windows border (about 3-4px), and nothing else. I think that 1280x800 is fairly common resolution amongst the 15,4" laptops. Is it a known problem? Or better it is dependent of the window manager? (i will try on xp too, in the next days). The inkscape 0.45 does not suffer this, because, there was fewer tool (no 3D tool for example). If I undock the icon bar (at the left), it maximizes correctly. Tried searching on launchpad, but didnt find a bugreport about this problem, but Im remembering discussing this problem in the past (having inkscape problems on small resolution). Do somebody remember such a discussion, or bugreport? Best regards, Khiraly

fonts disappear in OSX

I am using OS 10.4.11, Inkscape .45. I started working on a file and used a specific font. Then I discovered that my effects are not working, so I had to download a newer build of Inkscape from http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/ along with the python packages. I reinstalled Inkscape and got the effects working, but when I opened my old file, the fonts have changed to something generic, and I cant get them to go back to what they were! I rolled back to the older version on Inkscape, but that did not fix the problem. All my previous work with that font got messed up (I still have the original files in hopes of getting this to work.) Does anyone know how to get my fonts to work again? 2nd part of the question: And if I get new fonts, how do I add them to Inkscape running on OSX? I also installed Blender on my mac recently... I am still trying to remember everything I did since the last time it worked. I'm going to convert my fonts when I get home tonight, but in the meanwhile I would be more than happy to do anything I can to help figure out why the fonts worked in the past and not any more. I have more files with that font, which I have not touched for at least a month. Also would it be helpful if I did a clear reinstall of Inkscape to last year's build? Is there anything else on my system besides the Inkscape.app which needs to be removed for a clean uninstall? The reason I ask is because every time I dragged and dropped Inkscape.app into the trashbin and then installed another Inkscape dmg, it seemed to remember my previous settings, such as "Open recent" would show all the recent docs I worked on. OK, I did a little research and there's no wonder you never heard of it: it is a mac specific thing. To get a brief overview of font management on OS X (which I've always thought to be very well designed) you can skim over this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25251 http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn2024.html The Font Suitcase thing is a format dating back from OS 9 (the original Macintosh system, before it was unixified). This is a weird format, in which the whole font is stored in the resource fork and nothing is stored in the data fork. As a result the file appears to be 0 bytes: $ ll Curlz\ MT -rwxrwxr-x@ 1 root admin 0 Apr 7 2004 Curlz MT nor do they have a file extension. The font information however is just regular true type. OS X (i.e. the unixified version) does not ship with these fonts now (I'm not even sure it ever shipped with some) but supports them for backward- compatibility's sake. The only app I know that ships with such fonts is.... you guessed it: MICROSOFT Office. Well you can't ask them to be good players on a platform which is competing with them, for sure. I don't expect support to appear in Pango anytime soon since the format is deprecated. Anyway, it seems perfectly safe to convert those to regular TTF, no information is lost: it just moves it from the resource fork to the data fork. It just means each user has to do it. PS: I would be curious to know which format Office 2008 uses for its font on OS X. Does someone have info on this? PPS: you may see some work on font suitcases in Pango, but this is not (AFAIK) related to this particular format. It is probably related to the new font suitcase format introduced with OS X, which has the dfont extension and is kind of the contrary: everything is in the data fork and the resource fork is empty of font information. This makes working with this format easier. But it is at the same time quite new so support is not yet perfect. Modifying Inkscape source code in order to modify context menu

Hello, I am modifying Inkscape source code, in order to add a new option in context menu, but I have a problem because there are many classes and it's difficult to understand the whole functionality from all of them.... To the point: I've developed several extensions in python (.inx and .py files) to draw custom elements. But I would like to add the functionality to modify these elements in a easy way. Then whenever someone selects one of them and clicks the right button, shows up the contex menu with an option to modify the properties of the curernt element. So I don't know wheter there is any function to show the same dialog of the extensions with the elements properties I have selected or I must code new dialogs in c++ through gtk. Hello Inkscape users, I am brand new in this forum, actually this is my first post. I dont know if this is the right place to ask my doubt. Well, I am developping a small app using Java & Inkscape. I am loading SVG documents made through Inkscape tool right on a JSVGCanvas. Roughly speaking, the main issue is that i would like to change the mouse cursor to the hand_cursor one, every time someone passes through a subelement defined within the SVG. To the point, is there any special attribute where to define the type of cursor you want within the SVG document. effects in Ubuntu

Hello, I have a problem with extensions in Ubuntu. I am compiling the source in ubuntu because I would like to do a modification. The problem is that I add my files .inx and .py in the directory /inkscape-0.45.1/share/extensions/ but when I open inkscape I can't see them. It works fine in windows, I don't know if I must do something else in order to it works out in Ubuntu. Thanks for your help. SVG and the Web

Hi, I just finished my first web design <http://home.arcor.de/ccyrny/> in Inkscape that incorporates SVG. The only problem: IE 6 doesn't support it, and I'm not sure about IE 7 (I am using Linux/Firefox). My question: Does it make sense to keep the SVG (since the web site is for clients)? I really love the look, but I'm especially very disappointed with IE (basically the old story). I would be glad if someone could give me some feedback on how my page looks (so far, only the entrance page to my site) in their browser. I would also appreciate feedback/experience by other members on the list on the use of SVG for web sites. How to integrate Inkscape dialogs into an only window?

Greetings I'm new to using Inkscape. I've noticed that dialogs and other floating stuff (e.g. the layer dialog) are open in different windows, so it gets uncomfortable switching from window to window. Maybe I've not made proper configuration. How can I get dialogs to be integrated with the main window. Help would be appreciated. TIA, Jim The way I create gradients so that the gimp can use them involves these steps (not really all that necessary though you could just put the svg file in the gimp user gradient directory): 1. Open or create inkscape document with the object that has the gradient you want or made. 1a. If you open document with object that has gradient you want then follow step 2 if you just created the object with gradient then just delete object and save as plain svg. 2. Copy object with gradient into a new document and delete the object save as plain svg. 3. Open svg document with text editor and delete everything betwen </def></svg> tags 4. Save as whateveryounamedit.svg 5. Place in personal gimp gradient folder 6. Open gimp and you will see in the gradients a gradient with an id from the document, duplicate and rename the gradient and it will be a .ggr which you can just drop into any document or just resuse in the gimp. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Never miss a thing. I have some PNG files that I want to convert into gradients for gimp. I've read that you can export SVG files from inkscape and gimp will read them. The gradients are way too complicated to use gimp's gradient editor and are color from end to end. When I try to create a gradient from a PNG file in inkscape and export to SVG, gimp picks up two black fading to transparent gradients. I think I've read all the documentation and have googled this to death over the past couple days. Can this be done, and if so, can someone please point me toward instructions on how to do it. Bug: Inkscape or GIMP?

inkscape gallery update

I wanted to keep you update about the inkscape gallery project. Don'know why but it seems harder than we expected to find people to debug and populate the web-site, i'm doing this here in the international community and in the italian one too. We need more people to stress the web-site to be sure about it, and we need images to make it beautiful when it will be online at http://www.inkscapegallery.net. And i'd like the international community to partecipate cause i had to write so many words in english and i'm fearing that i did terrible mistakes cause i'm from italy and..you know...we're not so smart in multilanguage. I tried to handle this heavy task, i hope you will not be disgusted by my tv-serial based english :-[ I added new features to inkscape gallery, like an advanced search to search for licenses or users, now i'm working on the rss feeds and i provided personal users feed at the moment. We have another big project about inkscape gallery and i will soon entroduce to you. Converting SVG to PDF: No export filename given and no filename hint

I'm trying to convert svg to pdf. "inkscape -A stack.pdf stack.svg" works, but the resulting image has a lot of empty space. I tried adding -D but that gives me "WARNING **: No export filename given and no filename hint. Nothing exported." Any help? FWIW I was able to use -D successfully in the past when converting svg to png files.... Thanks, Yang
