Hello everybody, you may think i've paid the "ugly lord"; this is exactly what makes people speak about you and what makes you proud of what you have done, but i didn't, he's genuine :-D It was funny to read but i worked hard this night and i would like to report what i've done "officially": Many asked for svgs in inkscape gallery and they were right, we needed and it was a missing feature. I'm sorry if i didn't realize quickly how reasonable and useful it was :-[ but: we have svg in inkscape gallery now, it's easy to use cause you only have to browse and find the file, then unpload it and you will see it as a link that let you left-click on it if you want to see it or right-click if you want to download. I think this is a good way to do this, isn't? For those who already posted images in inkscape gallery you simply have to edit your post and you'll find the svg_source fieldset with the browse button. After you uploaded click on the submit button and you've done. I made some css fixes, the "submitted" block in comments, for example, that nicu was missing, but it was just clearing (for the web developers) and it was at the bottom of the page. Many others little changes in comments to make them layout consistent, I followed nicu's suggestion again about the cc attributes explanation in the "content creation" skin, that i moved in the right column (i still have to theme it) to decrease the scrolling when submitting a drawing. For any better solution i will take a look, but this is quite good, i hope. Just a couple of words about general beliefs about inkscape gallery; i didn't expect everyone to love it, i liked to do something new and peppery (is this word tolerable?) and i think it is normal to have various reactions, not necessarily eager. This is about the layout i've designed, but i think inkscape gallery to be enough powerful as a software to be liked for the things it does and the features it provides. I just wanted to have feedback about the changes i've made to the text colors, i told you in a previous mail, i tried to find balance between readability, shine, keeping the image in a privileged status. Gradients Gimp and Inkscape

I'm trying to create SVG gradient files in inkscape that gimp can read. I'm importing a PNG file and then hitting "G" for the gradient select. Then I export to a SVG file. When gimp picks up this file, it has lost all it's color and looks like a black to transparent gradient. I've been through the doc's and have googled this for hours now. I'm new to inkscape, so I'm probably missing something obvious. Does anyone have any clues they can share? System: Suse Linux 10.2/32 Gimp 2.4 (With SVG enabled) Inkscape 0.45 TIA, Jim

Circles separating from gradient

I don't think my last message got posted b/c I wasn't signed up to the group yet so here it is again. In this file, why doesn't the gradient I put on the circle stay with the circle? If I move the circle, it moves, but the gradient stays pegged to the center of the page. Other pen "shapes" for caligraphy tool?

Is there a way to change the shape of the calligraphy tool "nib". I found the setting for capping the end (can't remember what it was called) to mimic a round tip (at the end of the strokes. What I was hoping to do was emulate a split or notched tip to get parallel strokes that respect the stroke weight and gravity. -Rob A

Fleshtones Palette

Hello again, well, i made some changes: i tried to follow suggestions about text colors and changed to a delicate ivory the pink ones , i've changed most of the purple titles and links to a vivid fucsia to avoid darkness in older monitor too. Honestly i can't tell you if this is an improvement but maybe i just need to get used to. I followed nicu suggestion about image size, this is what i've done: now the limit is at 1600x1600px, we had some problems with php timeout, but the hosting provider "diciannove" is our friend and they fixed right away. Nothing changed apparently but if you have a big screen you'll surely notice that the "test" image i posted takes all the screen window. I could use a landscape image to make it clearly visible, but what happens now is that if you have a 1600px wide monitor and you'll see the image (a 1600px wide image, clicking on the thumbnails or on the image in the full node view too) you will have the entire screen filled by the image powered by jquery thickbox. Pretty cool... ;-) Please give me feedback about the colour scheme changes, at this point you're the jury. :-) Da.

Woo-Hoo Thanks to Kurt I was able to pull together an extension. It is ungainly slow because of the whole "calling another instance of Inkscape" deal , but it does work. This provides an option of restacking the selected objects in a direction (left to right, right to left, top to bottom, or bottom to top) as well as the point of each object to compare (top left, bottom middle, etc). Attached are before and after samples, as well as the extension. It registers as "Effects->Modify Path->Restack" I am running on Inkscape 0.46dev+devel, built Apr 28 2007, so ymmv if running .45 -Rob A>

Hopefully, this time will work. I don't understand why the yahoo mail program deletes those lines. "behind fill" for outlines?

Hello all. There is a nice feature in Corel Draw, that I'd like to ask if it could be included in Inkscape. Or if already is there, please point me out how to use it. In CD, it is called "behind fill", and it is an option for outlines. You see, the outline "grows" both to the outside and to the inside of the given object. With "behind fill" turned on, we can only see the outside part of the outline, as if it were placed behind the object. One workaround for this is to duplicate the object, apply an outline, and put it behind the other object (without outline). Export/save custom shapes

Hello, This is probably a dumb question, but I couldn't find anything on google. I am always making the same shapes and copying them from an old drawing to a new one, etc. I would like to export each of my custom shapes into an individual inkscape svg file, and be able to use them when making new drawings. How can I do this? I tried putting just one shape in a new drawing and saving it, but it saves the whole drawing, I just want the shape. Thank you, Gabriel PS Does anyone also know how to create a sort of palette that contain all my shapes (if I can find a way to export them of course) so I can just click on one to add it without having to open them through the open dialog?

Inkscape textures

I've got an external texture made in the GIMP to be seamless. I import it into Inkscape and use it as a pattern. When I scale the object, but keep the pattern the same size, I sometimes notice at certain zooms or when scrolled to certain positions border lines, as if the pattern is not scaling uniformly or if there is some minor precision error where you can see a very fine border at some areas. This is not around all instances of the pattern in the object, but sometimes, just a single line in the middle of the object. Brian Vanderburg II

How to use path effects

I'm still using 0801181659 snapshot and I'm using the live path effects. Where have the settings for the path effects been moved to? I add an affect (test all three), but the options/pattern paste button/etc is no longer there, just a 'Remove' button. Is there some menu command to open the path effect settings for the specific effect (path along path in this case)? Brian Vanderburg II

Could someone tell me if inkscape has these features or if they are on a road map. If they are not on the road map maybe someone could enlighten me as to why they are not. Here is my list ... 1. A layer pallet with the following functionality. Here is a basic screen shot of how it might look: http://codebot.org/inkscape/layers.gif The explanation: Add a layer pallet. The pallet should allow you to visually see each layer with thumbnail previews of each layer, element, and group. The pallet should allow you to create and delete layers as well as group and ungroup items. It should allow you to change item visibility and perhaps item opacity. You should be able to drag items in the pallet to reorder them. You should also be able to optionally change the names for items if you so choose. 2. True docking windows for color mixer, fill and stroke, and layer pallet, The explanation: Allow more windows to be docked to the right/left/bottom side of the main window. Remember the docked layout between inkscape sessions and provide the ability to dock or undock those windows.

Inkscape filter effects causing crash

I'm using XP SP2 Inkscape 20080118 snapshop. When creating a filter effect for an object and connecting the filter to the fill color, activating the effect on the object causes Inkscape to close. I can connect the effect to the source graphic, but not the fill. The problem may also exist in other places of the filter effects. I sent this to both the user and dev lists because the last time I sent something to the dev list it didn't make it and I got a reply of some problem. It should make it to one of them. very small points, stars

I think the original thread was in the devel. forum, but just wanted to share my how to make a starry background trick. Rather than make a really small circle and clone it everywhere, just a draw messy scribbled line all over the area that needs stars, using the freehand tool. The kind of thing a toddler would give you to put on the fridge. Then set the line type to the most spaced out, smallest dashes, which are actually square (dash length = line width), so they look like little dots. Make the line white, on a black background you end up with little white points with a pleasing random distribution. Cheers -Terry

Hello, my name is Davide, i'm an inkscape user since i started playing with graphics, then it became a work. I started using inkscape for web-design too and then i had an idea after looking for inkscape resources on the internet. I've found many tutorials, some forums but i couldn't find what i expected for a vector graphic software: a web-site gallery, with the opportunity to publish your drawing inkscape made, so... so i did it and with my small company called nois3lab (http://www.nois3lab.it) decided to make the best we could to provide the inkscape's users community with a powerful web-site not only for self publishing of images but also to increase visibility for inkscape and for the users community too. Now we're almost ready to release it, we need someone to join us to fill the web-site with content (images for first) and to debug the web-site, making it comfortable even though we hope it already is. Actually there's a splash page on http://inkscapegallery.net to prepare users to the next release. We used drupal, cause it's open-source and cause we know it well, we tried to make it work the best it can. So, the development area is at http://test.inkscapegallery.net, if you'd like to, you can start to use it, posting your images, populating forums. We need 10 days of debugging and feedback, then we will move everything in http://www.inkscapegallery.net I know that inkscape.org already have a section called gallery, but i think that what inkscapegallery could be is quite different, we hope to give inkscape the best container for images created with it and the users the best place to submit their work. I hope that after the release we will collaborate with inkscape.org too, cause the primary goal of this web-site is to help inkscape knowledge growth, to give a place where to go to see what inkscape can do. I love inkscape.org cause it's full of documentation, resources, forums. Some of these will be in inkscapegallery to, but it is a gallery web-site for the most and we hope a great web-site gallery. Question: Is it a goal of an SVG website to use SVG text file or should we avoid it since it is not selectable in a browser. I'm referring to Nicu's example: http://svg.nicubunu.ro/ My paragraph text wasn't rendering like Nicu's so I figured that I could just write some text in the html document instead. I totally agree with Nicu. You inkscape users (and others of course) should start serving SVG on your webpages. Browser makers complain that there is no SVG content out there. I am sure they will more quickly develop their SVG support, once there is more SVG content out there. Wikipedia is a good example. They store their files in SVG format, but server PNG per default. They should enable SVG per default and just server PNG as a fallback. At least one third of the browsers out there can display SVG: Opera, Safari, Firefox. None of them is perfect, but more SVG content would definitely challenge them to complete their support. BTW: the Webkit people just added SVG fonts support to the developers version of Webkit/Safari. So, after Opera, the Adobe viewer and Batik, Safari will be the next browser implementing SVG fonts. A long, long time ago, Macromedia Freehand came with a plugin that exported your Freehand document to HTML. Basically, it turned all of the non-text graphics into a series of JPG's and the text was left as is in an HTML document. Here are two possible options that could make the use of SVG on the web less painful... 1)An Inkscape effect (or HTML export functionality) that generates PNG's (or separate SVG's) of all non-text graphics, then generates an HTML document that displays the graphics along with the original text. 2)An SVG-to-HTML program/script that creates separate SVG's for each non-text object in the original SVG document, then generates an HTML document that displays the new SVG graphics along with the original text. Personally, I would love to see Inkscape have the ability to export the document to a set of documents (HTML and associated PNG's and TXT's) that can be displayed as a web page. I can't help with that option, but I could try my hand at creating option 2 in Java. I haven't used my Java skills for over 2 years, so things will probably go a little slowly. If anybody has any ideas, suggestions or comments about such a program, please feel free to let me know. Heck... I might be taking the long way around for all I know. Using <Object> to scale SVG file

Hi, I'm new to Inkscape and SVG. I've just created my first Inkscape graphic and now want to include it in my web page. I've learned to use the tag to do this, and it works fine except for one thing. The graphic is too big, and Firefox is automatically generating scroll bars to view the entire image (which does not fit into the height and width specified in the object tag). Is there any way to scale an SVG image at render time, either by using options in the object tag or by some other means? I tried using the object tag's subtag to specify height and width parameters, but that didn't work. OSX 10.5 - XQuartz 2.1.2 release

The latest update for X11 on Leopard is out - see http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz here for the release details. This is greatly improved from the version that ships with 10.5 and is a recommended install. PDF import in 0.46 Ubuntu build

Thanks to Bryce Harrington for the 0.46 dev build. No problems at all getting this running on ubuntu 7.10. My only problem is with PDF import - it just doesn't exist. The package recommends installing a whole lot of things, including pstoedit, imagemagick, python-XML and more. I installed all those. The only one I couldn't install was sketch, which protests on installation because it says a newer version of skencil is already installed. I also tried installing libcairo2-1.5.4 from the hardy package. This required a new version of libc6 from hardy, which required an uninstall and upgrade of tzdata to the hardy package, plus libpixman. Then libcairo2-1.5.4 seemed to install fine, but still no joy in Inkscape. Any thoughts. i386 live CD version of gutsy (7.10). Just trying to figure this out for a friend. Main program running well. Thanks all for info on the SVG viewer topic. It never was the most convenient thing about SVGs (and anyway not Inkscape's fault) so I sort of did with it. Mac users - please check install help wiki entry

Hi, While helping a friend start the install process on a Mac today, I checked out the wiki to find nothing there about the Mac process. So I wrote my own section, including the X11 installation. Problem is, I don't have a Mac of my own, and I can't verify what I've written. I won't see my friend to finish the X11 part for several days, and even then I will only do one of the three alternatives for X11. Can Mac users check it out http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/InstallHelp here and please make any corrections? Can I encourage others to write entries there for different platforms, including the Autopackage method? If you've installed it before on a platform that isn't well explained, then please at least have a go. What a pity if people were turned off before even getting going! Sorry about the previous html version - somehow I had the wrong setting so when I copied and from the web page, it added html. This version should be fixed. I tried the Inkscape SVN snapshot - Ubuntu .deb's on Ubuntu 7.10, but I don't see an entry for importing or opening PDFs in the open or import menu. I see that on a recent Mac OS X PPC version though which is older.

Bryce, Thanks for the new .deb file! Unfortunately, some of the effects don't seem to work any more, specifically perspective and envelope. When I run perspective effect, I get a dialog that says the following... "Inkscape has received additional data from the script executed. The script did not return an error, but this may indicate the results will not be as expected." The dialog box also provides the following information... I too want to submit a splash screen. I will do it by the end of Sunday (i.e. Jan.06 23:59, GMT +2). I was planning to do it earlier but I kept postponing this. I hope I won't be too late (I interpreted the current deadline as 00:00 Sunday, i.e. the beginning of the day, rather than the end.)

Easily edit names

A lot of the names can be edited by right-clicking on an item, but some names can't be edited so easily, and even when this works, it is tedious when wanted to give meaningful names to many items. The XML editor could work, but would require a complete find-replace to replace the name. Instead it would be nice if there was a name manager that could show all the name used in a file, what type the name is (group, pattern, image id, etc), and even a preview of the time, and allow renaming it from there and making sure the new name is not used by something else. For example, the name linearGradient3313 doesn't mean much to me in a big file with many gradients. I'd rather name it to be more meaningful so if an item is to use the same gradient, I can more easily recognize it, esp. if it is similar to another gradient. The same goes with other things like patterns, etc, and it would be nice to have an easy-to-use name/id manager for them. p.s Not sure if this is the correct place to send this. Sorry if not. Inkscape and DXF files?

The school where I work has a laser cutter attached to a pc. The pc runs 'PC Design', outputing to the cutter. http://www.techsoftuk.co.uk/techsoft_software.htm As well as it's own propriety files, PC Design will accept dxf files to output to the cutter. I've tried importing dxf files created with Inkscape into PC Design, but they don't get rendered. Are the dxf files created by Inkscape's export non standard or otherwise 'funny'? Does anyone know of a 'workaround' for this problem, please? Jim Ford

Default Save Format

I am using the latest windows build of Inkscape (0801032322) but this has been happening for a while. I saved a document as a Cairo PDF which worked fine. Now my save format defaults to Cairo PDF instead of svg? I can see this would be useful to someone who wants a different default format but I expected the format to revert to svg. Curiously, if I open the pdf I saved and do Save As, it does revert to svg but if I open a new document and do Save As, it still reverts to pdf. If I save a document as svg and then try a new document, it does show svg so it is generally using 'last used'. I am not sure if this is a bug or a feature but if there is intent to make the save format persistent then shouldn't it have a setting somewhere to disable it? It seems counterintuitive as it currently is.
