Win 2000 menu font colour

I'm seeing white menu font for Inkscape installed on Windows 2000. This makes Inkscape pretty much unusable when that font occurs on a white background. When installed on Windows XP from the same install kit the font colour is black and everything works well. Rev 0.45.1 Mar 21 2007 Thanks for any pointers Mike

Is there a way to take a self-intersecting path or set of paths and dice them up into regions that can be filled? For instance if you draw a sketchy grid, with a set of wavy vertical and wavy horizontal lines, and you want to fill in the squares between the lines with different colors. If not, it seems like this could be a nice script to have. --bb

Hi iamnowhere, Assuming the background design is vectors, not bitmap or image, you need to select all the elements of it, and Object>Group. Then Object > Pattern > Object to Pattern Type your text and convert it: Path > Object to Path Right click on it and choose "fill" then fill with Pattern. Honestly for this job GIMP would probably be better suited IMHO Cedric

How do I color lettering with an image?

I don't know if I worded the subject line accurately so let me describe what I am trying to do... I want to create lettering (for example, "God bless the USA") which has black stroke paint and white fill. Then, I would like to take an American flag, put it in the background and ONLY have the flag's colors show through the lettering (so it looks like the letters are the colors of the flag). Does that make any sense? So, how do I do it? wacom tablet settings

i'm using a graphire 3 wacom tablet on opensuse 10.2. The mouse and pen work, but the program doesn't see the tablet so i can set pressure and such. does the wacom driver for opensuse and inkscape not allow for such settings to be made? does the pressure setting operate automatically, thin lines - light pressure, thick lines - heavy pressure? or am i just stuck with it being operational at all? dwain -- Dwain Alford P.O. Node Handles Invisible after Shape Creation?

Trying to modify some shapes I made with the pen tool, I noticed that the node handles do not show up after the shape has been created. They do show up while drawing the shape, but once it is closed they seem to be invisible. Is this intentional? I found that you can hold shift and change the shape of the lines, or just grab the lines themselves and strech them like rubber bands, similar to the way they behave in Flash (but not the same). Sometimes though, I would really like to see those handles, so I don't have to guess where they are, and can really fine tune my curves. Hi - I've taken the plunge to all open source, and I'm thrilled with Inkscape except for one maddening thing - I've been using icewm for a window manager, and it clashes horribly with (among other things) alt-clicking in Inkscape. Understandably, this makes working with Inkscape incredibly difficult. Any advice out there on a good window manager to use with Inkscape? I know I can use ratpoison, but then I have the annoyance of trying to use ratpoison with Gimp. I've already searched the list archives and other resources, but I'm hoping that someone out there has solved this problem already, so I won't have to spend days testing out window managers myself. getting started

Can someone on this list help me get started with Inkscape. I have release 0.43. I really like the program's drawing functionalities; however, so far I have not been able to figure out how to create and use .svg files (which I understand is the program's main file type). I draw cartoons and, no matter how good the program is, it is of no use to me if I cannot figure out how to share the stuff I create and post to websites, etc. So far I have figured how to create a basic .svg file and also I've manage to import a .bmp into MS Powerpoint. I created the .bmp by 'exporting to .bmp'. But I cannot just 'copy and paste' images that I create into other programs. Why is this? Win2000TS menu font is white

I installed Inkscape 0.45.1 built Mar 21 2007 in WinXP and it is fabulous :) Thank you. I installed the same version on a Win2000 Terminal Server and while it works OK - I have difficulty with menu text because it appears white instead of black. It makes all text which appears on a white background invisible. I couldn't find any options for setting the Inkscape menu font color. I experimented with different Windows color schemes but no luck. How can I get the menu fonts to appear black? Thanks for any pointers Mike

Create favicon.ico

I created an SVG file in Inkscape and it looks as I would expect it to, regardless of scale. I export it to PNG so that I can then convert it to ICO using The GIMP. The problem is that the exported PNG file is very pixelated and doesn't look near as good as the SVG file. I'm new to Inkscape so I'm probably just not exporting it correctly. Hello Everyone, Because of Inkscape, I started drawing an online comic. I'm now working on a bigger project with this excellent program and I need to use some of the advanced features in the effects menu. I'm running Inkscape 0.45 on OS X 10.4.9. I've followed the instruction on the Inkscape wiki <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/CompilingMacOsX#pyXML> on how to install pyXML and it seems to have installed without any problems. However, when I try to use the effects menu, I still get the error: "|The inkex.py module requires PyXML. Gradient Dialog Box

I was going to post a feature request, but it seemed to similar to bug #1507665 (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1507665&group_id=9…) So I thought I would post here first, rather than get myself deleted. I would really like to see some better control over gradient creation in Inkscape. Currently it is possible to make cool gradients, but the dialog is cumbersome, and anti-intuitive. I would love to see colored sliders, as in the attached screenshot from Photoshop's gradient editor so that I can micro-manage every aspect of how my gradients look visually, with instant feedback. Right now it is difficult to get the offsets right, and if you are working with a gradient with a lot of similar colors (say, trying to simulate some shiny metal), it is difficult to select the correct stop (for me anyway). I was very confused by buliabyak's comment that the "'gradient dialog box' is no longer needed," since we would now be able to "edit [it] all on [the] canvas". In Inkscape 0.45.1 I can edit the end points of a gradient on the canvas, which is a neat trick, but I don't see how you would edit any of the stops in between those without the dialog. If this kind of functionality is in the roadmap, I will humbly step back, for I am no coder (in C#/GTK anyway) just a lowly web designer.

Perspective Effect - Format autodetect failed

Hi, I'm getting a warning dialog every time I use the Perspective effect. The effect *does* work, but only after I click OK on the dialog box. This is happening on my Ubuntu Edgy box, but not on my XP installation at work. While I can live with the dialog box popping up, I'd like to create another screencast which includes the perspective effect, but it doesn't look so hot when Inkscape throws a warning dialog up everytime I use it. Any clues as to what it might be? Or how I can avoid it? Here's the warning message - which usually appears 4 times with slightly different numbers at the front: ** (inkscape:5984): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG.

Font creation with Inkscape: Exporting groups to independent SVGs?

Hello, I've been using Inkscape to design a font. I've used it in a few designs through the old manual-copy-and-arrange mode, but I'd like to convert it to a TTF so that it can be used normally in text. I am aware that Inkscape can't do this, but I see that FontForge can import SVGs. I've tried it and the SVG import seems to work well. My question is: does anyone know of an easy way to export all the glyphs from my SVG file into separate SVGs? I suppose it shouldn't be too hard to do with a Python script, but I don't think I have the skill to do it myself. As a marginal note, is anyone doing fontwork with Inkscape? Has anyone tips or experiences to share? Save Dialog

I don't know how difficult this would be to achieve but IMHO it would be a useful addition if it is possible... I have a large number of documents in subfolders inside a main folder. Each subfolder name is 16-17 characters long and when a document with a new ID is created, it needs a new subfolder. I use the 'Create Folder' button which works fine and allows me to name it correctly, but it then returns me to the folder list which is very large and I then have to find the new folder. Is it possible to automatically enter the newly created folder, that is why the folder is created after all? This may seem a long way to handle this but there is a good reason for doing so :-) I am using WinXP and Inkscape 0.45-1 and since I discovered Inkscape, I rarely use Gimp any more, this is a phenomenal piece of software and kudos goes to all who have helped create it! Perspective Effect generating warning message dialog

When I execute the Effects->Perspective command, it pops up a dialog box with several warning messages. Once I close the dialog box, the result looks fine ( the effect works). I downloaded the 0.45-1 source and compiled it tonight to double-check and it still gives the warning messages. I'm running it on Ubuntu Edgy. Here's the warning messages that come up. Note: Each time the numbers change but the number of warnings remains consistent: ** (inkscape:5984): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG. ** (inkscape:5986): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG. ** (inkscape:5988): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG. ** (inkscape:5990): WARNING **: Format autodetect failed. The file is being opened as SVG. I'm running a slightly older version of 0.45 on my windows xp machine at work and it executes the effect without any dialogs or warnings. Here at home, I was running a nightly build (autopackage version) from about the 13th of March and it consistently gave me these warning messages as well. I am running Beryl here at home, but I've switched to Metacity and it demonstrates the same behaviour. Any clues? Thanks, Richard

Now that I got everything sorted out (thanks to all who replied!), I figure I might as well post to the list how I automated Inkscape SVG exporting under Windows+cygwin, perhaps it will save someone else some time in the future. I use GNU "make" to build my documents, and here are the relevant bits of the Makefile: ------ INKSCAPE=d:/portable_apps/inkscape/inkscape.exe SRCDIR=$(shell cygpath -d -m `pwd`) %.pdf: %.svg $(INKSCAPE) -f $(SRCDIR)/$< -A $(SRCDIR)/$@ # list of PDFs to build from SVGs: all: foo.pdf bar.pdf baz.pdf ------ The first stumbling block was that inkscape requires full paths to the original file and the destination file. The second stumbling block was how to translate them for inkscape, which does not like cygwin's /cygdrive/c/... notation. Drawing a path with Mass

I really like the effect of "Mass" on the Caligraphy tool, and I'd love to see the feature on Pencil tool also. Until then (hint) does anyone have any clever tricks to help me freehand draw a smooth path? The best I've thought of (and it's not very good) is to use the Caligraphy tool freehand draw a closed shape, tediously place objects to fill it, then "union" them to create one solid shape that I can apply a stroke to. I really don't think you can use the pencil tool practically with a tablet. command-line export on Windows: no file generated

I am using Inkscape 0.45 on Windows XP SP2. I am using the *.7z version (not the installer executable) that I unpacked to a regular directory. I try to export some *.svg Inkscape images to PDF on the command-line, using: <path to my inkscape>\inkscape.exe foo.svg -A foo.pdf >From the FAQ I understand I won't see any console output on Windows because Inkscape is built as a GUI app. That's fine, but no file is generated either: inkscape runs, quietly exits, *and there is no foo.pdf* in the current directory. Same thing if I use -e option to try to generate a PNG, or any other format I have tried. Needless to say, I tried and I can export the images manually from within Inkscape no problem. Am I missing something? Also, the FAQ mentions that you can build a console version of Inkscape, so that you get console output. Does anyone know of any pre-built binaries anywhere? I suspect that maybe Inkscape wants to print out an error or warning for some reason, to tell me why it cannot export the image, but cannot (just grasping at straws). I've got a ton of Inkscape pics in my thesis, and it's a serious pain to have to export them all manually... (Aside: one annoying bug/lacking feature in this regard: when you select *.PDF filetype in the Save/Save a copy dialog, or any other format, the extension in the filename entry field is not automatically changed; you have to go edit it manually... argh....) -- Maciej Kalisiak mac [at] dgp.toronto.edu http://www.dgp.toronto.edu/~mac

Currently, if there is an instance of inkscape running, and I double click an SVG file from the window manager, it opens a new instance of inkscape. Is it possible, somehow, to instruct Windows, or Inkscape, to only allow one instance of inkscape to run and open the file in it? Second question: can the GTK file open dialog be made to remember the last location a file was opened in, or at least be set to a default location other than the application folder? thanks, Michael

A few questions about colours

All, 1) I need to get the colour used in some text for other lines of text, but for some reason the eye dropper is not very efficient there. What do I do wrong? I sometimes workaround copying the text and then changing it, but using the same colour often means the font and size are different (still easier to find the right font than test the colours in the Palette). 2) When importing SVGs into Scribus, I often need the colours to be defined in the CMYK space. Does the colour space change automatically? In Scribus, you can define a colour in a colour space and then set it in RGB or CMYK or HSL... 3) Sometimes in a specific project it is needed to use a small set of colours (eg corporate look and feel). Is there a way to push a colour in a subset (small palette) in order to find it easily? 4) Also I need to grab colours from bitmap files which I import temporarily as background in order to build the shapes on top. How can I use the eye dropping tool to grab the colour on the bitmap? I do not seem to be able to do it (if there's a problem between the keyboard and the chair be merciful) At the moment I just keep my image editor open and take a mental note of the RGB hex value.... it's good for the neurones but is there another way? Additive color mixing of transparent objects?

Hi Can someone clarify the mixing of colors of transparent objects for me? Is it possible to use additive mixing of transparent objects. Im not sure if I use the correct terminology, but I mean like mixing colored light and not colored paint, so that a green transparent object overlaying a red one will be yellow and not brownish? Or do this exceed the SVG format? The mixing seem to be somewhere in between the two possibilites? Patterns from Inkscape into the GIMP

I've been creating "Patterns" in Inkscape, but when I open the SVG file in The GIMP, the patterns are not visible. I wondered if anyone knows why this is or if there is anything I should be doing to the pattern first, before trying to open in the GIMP. My aim is infact to turn my image into a JPG eventually, but I seem to lose quality if I export as Bitmap first.Any suggestions?Thanks, Anna

Bryce, I was wondering about something similar today regarding the calligraphy tool vs the other path tools (freehand and bezier). Some details to stimulate the local production, "about.local.svg" is the competition for choice of local Splash[1]. I folloied the translation of Inkscape 0,45, I found not this very motivated. Hello, I have a SVG file created with adobe illustrator. This file has embedded fonts (svg format). Is it possible to create a eps file with embedded fonts with inkscape. When I try to save as eps and chooce embedded fonts inkscape crashs with a runtime exception. ciao
