Ruler LPE improper behavior after doc unit change

Hi Friends, This is coming from a report on Inkscape Community forum: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=567.0 Even though the member marked it fixed, I'm not sure the fix was really an appropriate fix. Short version The user couldn't get the Ruler LPE to work properly. In the topic, you can see screenshots from the user's file and also when I tested using their file. Their SVG file is also attached, in case someone wants to test. But here's link for convenience: https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=567.0;a… The user was able to make the LPE function properly by changing the Scale factor to 1.0. However, I suspect that will result in some other unwanted change (either a different page size than is set, or a DPI different from 96....or something?). At first, I was confused, and I thought there might be a problem with the scale factor, because I thought a new doc should start with scale factor = 1.0. But now the user reports that it did originally start with mm units and scale factor 1.0. When they changed to px, Inkscape correctly changed the scale factor. So now, I think that points to the LPE not liking the unit change very much. Could someone who understands this better than me, have a look at that please? Does there need to be a bug report? Completely disable snap to cusp

Hello all, I am attempting to do precise vector modification and I keep getting "snap to cusp" sort of thing happening which is *not* what I want. How do I completely disable this? I seem to recall trying to figure this out a long time ago and not being successful, and it's super irritating :) I can see where I can change the snap delay but that's not adequate. I would prefer if it was a checkbox to enable/disable snapping? I am comfortable with editing a preferences file in the CLI if necessary. Thanks, Chris

Align objects side by side with fixed spacing

Hi everyone, I have e.g. 100 objects of the varying size. How can I get them all next to each other, with equal gaps? (For example, no gap.) I've found one way to sort of attain this this result: start with them all further apart than needed, then iteratively scale each object ob by a small amount and "make horizontal/vertical gaps between objects equal" - until the desired gap is needed. But of course that's very slow. Does anyone know a proper/easier way to do this? Best, Christoph

command-line tools for JessyInk

Hi everyone, On a few occasions when I needed a pdf document, I have been unable to export JessyInk presentations using the usual procedure due to Inkscape freezing when opening the Firefox-exported files. I ended up writing a little Python module and command-line tool to directly export the slides from the command line. Some of you may find it useful, especially when you have a deadline a few hours way and Inkscape suddenly chokes on your presentation ;) It supports JessyInk effects and views and exports each slide+effect/view as a separate svg file. These can then be converted directly with Inkscape on the command line to the format of your choice (e.g. with "inkscape -A ..."). Because it uses Inkscape to render the final slides, the slides appear exactly as designed in Inkscape. The script also includes functionality (via various subcommands) to extract, embed or deduplicate images, scrub sodipodi:absref attributes and unused defs, deduplicate markers[1], etc. The list will likely continue to grow. There is also a ji2pdf wrapper script to generate a pdf presentation from the JessyInk svg file. ji2pdf depends on pdfunite from poppler but could easily be changed to use another method to join resulting slides (e.g. imagemagick). There's also a wrapper script based on PhantomJS in the source archive but I haven't used it since writing ji2pdf. For an up-to-date list of features, check the help message on the project page[2]. Packages are available on Arch Linux (via the AUR[3] and my repos[4]). If any of the Inkscape or JessyInk devs are reading this, thanks for all your work! can't stop uninstall for 0.92.0

Hi Friends, While trying to help someone with a problem in a forum, I needed to uninstall 0.92.0, 64-bit, exe installer on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit (and then to install 0.92.1). There was something unusual happening during the uninstall that I had not seen before, and I wasn't sure if I was choosing the right options, so I wanted to cancel the uninstall, until I could investigate the unusual things. But I found there was no way to. Both the Cancel button and Back button, as well as the X Close Window button (top-right corner) are all grayed out the whole time. I even tried Alt + F4, to kill the window. It did kill the Programs and Features window, but not the uninstall dialog. Before I could get out the Task Manager to try and kill the process, the uninstall was finished. Even then, the only available button was Finish. Cancel and Back were still grayed out, as well as the X Close button. Tried Alt + F4 again, but there was no way out of this uninstall. Later, eventually I figured out what caused the unusual things that I saw, and realized they were not a problem after all. But I still think it should be possible to stop the uninstall, just like you can stop the installation process. Searching LP did not turn up any previous report, although as usual, sometimes I don't find the right search words, or I don't recognize technical language, or sometimes the report is buried under a title that doesn't predict it would be there. So should this need a bug report? Or is there some reason why the uninstallation can't be stopped? Thank you very much :-) brynn

how to ID a 7z version from Inkscape window?

Hi Friends, Trying to help someone in a forum, I was trying to figure out whether the version of Inkscape which would open on double-clicking an SVG file had been installed via EXE installer, and which one wasn't technically installed, but was from an unpacked 7z download. I wanted to know which one was associated with SVG files. As far as I can tell, the About screens are identical. Is there some way to know which version you're using? I tried searching LP, but couldn't find some good search terms. So how to tell which 64-bit version version you have open, if you have both 64-bit exe installed and 7z onboard and unpacked? But I remember a facility where one could create a push button by entering about four parameters and this push button would address another entity using I think a URL address. I have a huge interest in Python and Django and have build almost all the websites using them. 0.92.1 macOS unofficial test build

Hi all, I (with lots of help from su_v) have been working on getting the macOS DMG build working again with a view to having an official DMG ready for the future 0.92.2 release. The current _unofficial_ test build of 0.92.1 is available here: https://inkscape.org/en/~tghs/★inkscape-0921-tghs_2-x11-107-x86_64dmg Included in this build is a new feature to automatically set the recommended XQuartz configuration. You'll be prompted about this on launch if you've got XQuartz running in its default configuration. This used to have to be set manually, as documented here: https://inkscape.org/en/download/mac-os/. Any feedback is welcome. Since it's a test build, please don't file any bugs; reply in this thread, or contact me directly by email. repeated crashes on gradient mesh

Hi Friends, I'm working on a fairly small, fairly simple file with a fairly simple gradient mesh. It's a somewhat high zoom, and maybe I should scale it so I can work at 100%. But I'm not sure if that should matter. Anyway, it keeps crashing (taking out all open Inkscape files with it) when I try to move one particular node. 8 times in a row now. https://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/2nd-av-ani.svg I'm attempting to use the gradient mesh to ultimately make an animation of a light passing through an endless knot (see it in the hidden first layer). On the canvas, I've indicated 2 places where I have 3 mesh nodes on top of each other (to facilitate the light going around the corners with a trailing glow). It's the top node of the left-most stack of nodes. Steps to reproduce. Try to drag the top node of the left-most stack of nodes. Since the 3 nodes are stacked up, I need to move the top 2 off of the 3rd, to be able to select it individually. Whenever I try to drag the top one - BAM! Crash. There are no errors or message boxes. Just bam. (A backup was saved in the first crash.) Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, Inkscape 0.92. If you want me to upgrade to 0.92.1, I can. It's just I'm not aware the mesh was changed in the upgrade (so it seems like it wouldn't matter). Any kind of logs or files I can get for you? I don't know how to use the command line or terminal. But if you tell me what to do, I should be able to do it. Would you like a bug report? Thank you very much, brynn

Movable Chain

I'd like to create a movable chain of sorts... I'm not sure how or if this is possible with inkscape (0.91)... There seems to be lots of tutorials that show how to create a chain using Pattern along Path, the problem is, once the chain is created that's the end of the tutorial. I need to go a step further and actually move/manipulate the chain without deforming the links or changing the length of the chain. Maybe the "Pattern along Path" examples are completely wrong for what I want to do. To put it another way, take a real physical chain... 10' long, sitting on the floor. I can move the chain around, pull on one end, push the chain in the middle, shape it into an S curve, form a circle with the chain, etc. All the while, the individual links are exactly how they started -- they haven't been stretched or bent or deformed in any way. And while the actual length of the chain can very a little bit it's limited by how much slack there is in the individual links. Now, I want to do the same kind of thing in inkscape. I want to create a line long enough to hold exactly 60 circles, 20px in diameter with 5px space between each circle. Then, and this is the important part, I want move and reshape this "chain" around the canvas, just like I can do with a path composed of lots of nodes. But, I don't want the circles to change shape. The space between the circles can change a *little bit*, but should be limited... like the links in a real chain. I'm very new to both vector graphics and inkscape, so I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do is easy, difficult or impossible. I would appreciate some enlightenment.

inkscape 92.1 screwing up svg

HI, I am trying out inkscape 92 and downloaded 92.1 for windows 10 I just spent over an hour manually tracing a file I was hoping to use on my digital cutter - but it seem inkscape has changed the svg lines to an image - as useful as a chocolate fireguard or teapot - and I don't now how it did it but effing annoying!!!! Steps I did I loaded in an image with the design on I manually traced the outline, using black stroke for cutting and red stroke for any folding (non cut) lines I moved the traced lines to a new layer above the current one turned off the eye on the cut lines layer moved the actual image to the centre of the page locked the image layer opened the eye on the cut line layer selected the svg lines and at the bottom of the screen it say it's an image if I go into view>outline my svg lines show and a whwite square with a X - so it HAS changed it to an image so that was a waste of couple of hours as I now have to start all over again. and it WON'T be using inkscape 92!!! in fact inkscape 92 might well be dumped off the system as it's useless if it convert svg lines to images for no reason. NOT IMPRESSED and before anyone asks, I cannot use trace bitmap as that gives double lines and I need single lines and inkscape does not have a centre line trace. Gaz

maximized window extends beyond screen area 0.92 (bug?)

Hi Friends, I almost posted a bug report on this, but on 2nd thought, maybe it should be discussed whether it's a bug or not. I'm not sure if this is going to be an Inkscape bug, or something about Windows os. But I've never seen this in any other program, and I never noticed this in Inkscape before 0.92. When the Inkscape window is maximized, a small strip of all 4 edges of the window extend past the edge of the screen. Screenshot: https://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/ss/inkswin.jpg It particulary is a problem for the bottom edge for me. That's because I keep my taskbar auto-hidden. So if my mouse strays to the bottom, the taskbar comes up, and then I can't even see the status bar at all. Then I have to wait for it to go back down. So for example, if I want to use the zoom field and spinbox in the bottom-left corner, it's really hard to do. If I want to use the Style Indicator in the bottom-left, you can see that the bottom of almost half of "Stroke:" is beyond the edge. And "Fill:" is overlapping the palette scrollbar. Compare that to the....I guess it's called restore size window. You can see that all of "Stroke:" is showing, and there's even some space below that, like a buffer, before the edge of the window. In the maximized window, you see the toolbar buttons and snap control bar buttons are justified to the edge of the screen, with no space between them and the screen. But in the restore size, you can see there's a buffer there, before the edge of the window. The top, left and right edges don't cause me any touble. But the bottom edge is problematic. Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and this is a 15 inch laptop screen, non-touch, lcd, 1366 x 768 resolution. Should be reported? Thanks, brynn

Inability to update a Windows installation

On the Inkscape download/windows/ page it says 'exe and msi installers are equivalent but not compatible (i.e. one can not update the installation of the other)'. This seems to imply, for example, that a new msi installer can update a previous msi installation. However, when I try to install using the msi installer, I get a message saying 'Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue', and the existing version needs to be removed before installing the new version. This happened before for 0.91-x64.msi -> 0.92.0-x64.msi and has just happened again for 0.92.0-x64.msi -> 0.92.1-x64.msi. This is under Windows 7. Is this behaviour expected? - Robert

Hi there, Given an SVG that seems bounded to 100x100 which looks small when embedding into a Web page, how do I alter the SVG from Inkscape to make it take 100% of the space? editing gradient mesh on fill vs stroke

Hi Friends, I was just about to make a bug report, because it looked like as soon as I applied a gradient mesh to a stroke, it would break the mesh I had just applied on the fill (and vice versa). But at the last minute before I posted, I noticed some buttons on the control bar that I had not noticed before. Why do we have to click a special button to be able to edit the mesh? Why can't we just select the object and edit, like with everything else in Inkscape? There must be some reason? I see that by clicking both buttons, and leaving them engaged, we have normal expected behavior. But I'm still curious why it's made like this. Also, I wonder if having both buttons enabled should be the default? Thanks for comments, brynn

This is a pre-release for the upcoming stable bugfix release 0.92.1. Barring any last minute issues, 0.92.1 will be identical to the above tarball except for the version number. We'll let things settle for a few days and hopefully finalize the release this weekend. == Translations == Translation work is done. Please hold off on further updates until we're ready to start work on 0.92.2. == Future Releases == 0.92.2-targeted bugfixing work can begin on the 0.92.x branch once the 0.92.1 tarball's been cut, probably this weekend. A schedule will be established at that time as well, targeting a 0.92.2 release in April. A 0.92.3 release sometime around July seems likely. I'm hoping to continue with subsequent point releases on a roughly 2-3 month interval, so users can depend on the 0.92 series as a 'long term stable' (LTS) product. Assistance with testing is invaluable and I hope many people will join in following the trunk codebase; however, I know that building Inkscape can be a challenge, and we lack nightly builds on a few platforms, so I may attempt some form of interim snapshot preview release this summer to enable some broader testing before we're too far through 0.93's development cycle. gradient mesh on stroke and fill are opposite

Hi Friends, I want to put a mesh gradient on both the fill and stroke of an object. All the nodes of the fill, and all of the stroke are the same color (a medium shade on the stroke and lighter shade for the fill. The only thing that changes is the opacity or alpha. Wherever the nodes of the fill have higher opacity, I want the nodes of the stroke to have lower opacity. So let's say for example (using a linear gradient as an example) the fill goes from 10% on right end, to 30% on the left end. Then on the stroke, I want 30% on the right end and 10% on the left. Hhmm, there seems to be a bug (or something). I'll make a separate message for that. But my question is: What do you all think is the most efficient way to accomplish this? Can it only be done manually, or is there some extension or maybe even filter which can accomplish it a little faster? Maybe a blend mode? Thanks for comments :-) brynn

Wow! Thank you so much! I did not expect such a quick turnaround. I got one other response privately as well so it will likely end up being a nuanced hybrid of the two. Seriously, I was thinking it would have taken days and this was super fast! I literally can't thank you enough! Can I also ask if you're replying from a specific mailing list? Hi, Brynn! Thanks for staying with this isue! So do you mean that the 9.1 release will work on OSX 10.12? Website says 10.7-10.10, so I figured it wouldn't work... I'll have to wait on following up with MacPorts my laptop was lifted from my bag yesterday! So, I'll have to deal with insurance, etc and it'll be at least week or so before I have my a laptop again. Bit of a shock, but life does do this every now and then:-} Great news that there could be an official release! That would be superb! So, I'll hang in there (here?) and I guess I'll get Inkscape to work at some point! But I'm very glad the community and forum is working well, makes things a lot easier! Hello Lars, Very much like you, I am new to the list (albeit not entirely new to Inkscape itself). If Inkscape allows for user scripting, however, which I am not sure if it does, (Edit) I had to google and I found a blog post titled "Inkscape extensions by non developers, for non developers. A primer". The post explains it is possible. To avoid breaking the url across lines, I decided to shorten it, so see https://goo.gl/Fr2Mre to read how non-developers like you and me could create an extension. It's a bit intimidating to think about it, but maybe it could be done by non-developers, I don't know.) then an ordinary user could write a script (or extension) and make the process automatized. Providing that the part you want to edit is selected, the extension would need to: a) create new layer and name it "1st temporary (layer)", b) move currently selection to the newly created temp layer, c) create another layer and name it for example "2nd temp (layer)", d) reverse the selection, e) move new selection (i.e. all but those in the 1st temp layer) to the second temp layer, f) lock and g) hide the 2nd temp layer, This way we would be able to select and edit the parts from "1st temp layer" only, as you suggested. Inkscape does not see Times New Roma font

Hello, I am running Inkscape 0.48 on Ubuntu 14.04.1 (Elementary OS Freya), and I have installed Microsoft Core and New fonts. Now it happens that Inkscape can see them all but Times New Roman, and I cannot see way. Any ideas? Regards, Rafael

Try copying the ttf file for the font into the hidden .fonts folder in your home folder. This usually works well for me on Ubuntu based distros. GSoC Text Help (you don't need to be a developer to help with this)

Hey All, So, I'm looking to complete the application for this year's GSoC (Google Summer of Code, for those unfamiliar). Unlike previous years, they actually want our application hosted with them as opposed to a link to what we want in our wiki. It supports markdown, which is awesome, but when I go to pull what we have and put it in a text editor that counts characters, we're at 2035 characters when we need to be at 1500. Again, this is with the relevant markup which unfortunately counts against us. The source I speak of (for those with a wiki account is): http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=SOC_Application_Template&acti… Is there anyone with the time and inclination to help keep the substance while cutting down on the fat? (It looks lean to me as a start, but as you can tell by this email, brevity isn't normally a strong point for me) Our application needs to be complete by the 9th and this is one piece of it that I could really use a hand on due to my obligations for SCALE which are overlapping right now. I don't know that the main text itself that we host needs to be cut down as much as we should start a second copy that is intended for brevity, with shorturls and all that to help too. Edit particular part of SVG only

Hi, Say an SVG file has a chair. The chair is composed of several parts. It has a back, legs, etc. Is there any way to isolate one part of the chair only (one object? one vector section? sorry I do not know the correct term or word for it) and edit it isolated from all the other parts, say in its own window? Indeed you can select a particular part of the chair and edit it with all the other parts near it.. but I am wondering if you can completely isolate it, say in it's own edit window, to focus only on it, zoom in on it, etc. As a newbie, this may be something everyone knows how to do. Apologies if it's easy and I just missed how to do it. The idea is I want to focus on certain parts of the drawing and ignore the rest. And, if this feature doesn't exist in the standard program as it is, would such an idea be possible with an extension?

Inkscape 0.92.x stable daily PPA

For testers on Ubuntu, I've created a new automated PPA that builds snapshots of the current stable branch, 0.92.x: https://code.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/ubuntu/stable-daily Note that while these snapshots are of the stable tree, the packages aren't official releases, so there is some chance of bugs, and things can change. This PPA is intended to make it more convenient for folks to test our stable tree and help us ensure the point releases are high quality. I've only tested the Trusty package, so ymmv on other ubuntu releases but I expect they should all work as well as the official point releases. Bryce

Hello list! I am completely new to the list and to Inkscape, so apologies for some very basic questions. I had some trouble installing via terminal, but finally it seems it worked. However – I just can’t find the actual app! I assume it is called Inkscape and should be located in the Applications folder. Searching my computer doesn’t turn up any file called Inkscape. I feel like I may have missed a really basic trick:-) Any help seriously appreciated! Thank you Girilal Baars Sweden

0.91.1 pre0 available for testing

Hi everyone, the Inkscape 0.91.1 release is scheduled for ~ mid February (schedule may change!). For testing purposes, Bryce Harrington and Eduard Braun have made the pre0 (beta) prerelease source code and 7z Windows packages available on the Inkscape website at (scroll down to bottom of page): https://inkscape.org/en/download/development-versions/ This prerelease version introduces an automatic fix (which can be deactivated via command line argument) for some of the line-height problems encountered in Inkscape 0.92. It also fixes some crashes, untranslatable strings and typos, and adds a couple of translations. svg to emf conversion is still buggy

Hello Converting an svg to emf still seems to be buggy (I just tried inkscape-0.92.x-15325-win32.7z <http://download.tuxfamily.org/inkscape/win32/inkscape-0.92.x-15325-win32.7z> ). Attached you'll find the input svg and the result emf. This is a screenshot of the resultig emf file using "save as emf": As you can see there are white borders on the right and the bottom of the image. And no: most of the time the width of the bordes is not the same in x and y direction. Is there any way to get better results? Or do you know any freeware to crop emfs (without pixelating)? issues with Arrange > Polar Coordinates

Hi Friends, I was just answering a forum question about creating a clockface, and I used the Polar Coordinates dialog. I found that if I draw a circle, then type out the numbers, then choose Object's Rotational Center and First Circle (or 2nd), then select all, then click Arrange, all the numbers are placed at 3 o'clock. I found that if I move the circle before clicking arrange, it makes the feature function properly. Should I make a bug report? Or is this already a known issue? I searched LP without finding any similar report. But often I might not know the proper terminology (and recently I found the wiki was being used for bug reports (for gradient mesh)) so I just ask before I make a bug report, just in case. I'm on Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, Inkscape 0.92, 64-bit. Another issue, which is a little bit nit-picky, but still important, imo. For some time, I couldn't figure out what object was being referred to in "Object's bounding box" and "Object's rotational center". Is it the object I am drawing (such as a clock face)? It can't mean the circle, because further below in the dialog, it says "circle" (and if it meant circle, it would have said 'Circle's rotational center'). But after a lot of clicking around and trial and error, it seems it refers to the numbers on the clock face example. If that's the case, it should be "Objects' bounding box" and "Objects' rotational center". If they had been properly written, I would have understood at once that the objects in question are the numbers (or whatever objects are being arranged around the circle). Should I make a bug report about that? Thanks for your help :-) brynn

Hi everyone, Tav has published his polyfill for mesh gradients! (A polyfill is a piece of javascript code that supplies functions to browsers that they are lacking. They are usually used, if a web designer/developer wants to use some cool new feature, that doesn't work in some browsers, or doesn't work in older browser versions.) Settings as command-line options?

Dear fellow Inkscapists, thanks to the "Larger" option for icon sizes in the 0.92 version, more of the icons are now usable on my laptop's high-DPI display. Using an external monitor, that makes them too large of course, and changing the setting means starting Inkscape, going into the preferences, and restarting. Since everything else works fine, I didn't want to try compiling with GTK3 enabled since it's marked "experimental". But can I give these these icon size preferences as an option when starting Inkscape? Then I could just start a different script depending on what monitor I'm using. Of course it would be ideal if that's already an option, since then I could eventually switch to a binary distribution. But I don't mind compiling it myself either, if it's something I can add in myself. Does somebody know how this could work? Best, Christoph

Data-visualization extension ?

Dear all, I know I should be sending this to the dev list, but I'm not a member and I'm feeling lazy. In Illustrator there's a tool to import data in a spreadsheet, and create basic charts from that. It's very handy for people who do data-visualization. I would think that Inkscape is just as good as Illustrator for tweaking existing svg charts (colors, text, layout, etc.). But due to the lack of this tool Inkscape currently requires an extra step to create the charts with another application (e.g. the R project for statistical computing). I looked at tutorials to create extensions. I think that the logic could be quite easily implemented (i.e. calculating scales, displaying the shapes). But there doesn't seem to be a spreadsheet widget for the UI, which makes it a no-go if users can't input a few simple numbers manually. Any idea how difficult it would be to create this extension ? Fill between strokes

I've been trying to figure out how to use the 'Fill between strokes' path effect in 0.92 but I can't figure out what sequence of operations to use, or what the 'Link to path' and 'Select original' buttons are supposed to do. I've searched for instructions or tutorials without finding anything that matches what I'm seeing in 0.92. Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you. - Robert

Question on text colors of info boxes ...

Dear listmembers, I am quite happy with Inkscape (V 0.91 on openSUSE 42.1 with kde) with one single exception I could not find a solution for until now: Whenever I move the mouse - curser over an icon say on the left upright bar with different symbols (for example the selection icon) a help text is displayed. Unfortunately this text is white on a light gray background: long text short answer: one can hardly read what is shown in the box. Could any kind soul shed light on this and (maybe ...) tell me how to fix this problem? traceback from Interpolate extension

Hi Friends, Trying to use the Interpolate extension, I'm getting an error, including Traceback, and no results. But neither of the 2 original objects have a stroke at all. When I searched Launchpad, I found this report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1586568. It seems to be related to stroke width, but as I said, there are no strokes in this case. Inkscape 0.92 stable, 64-bit, exe installer, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit. Shall I add a Comment to that bug report, or is this different? If it's the same thing, how can I make use of the file which suv provided? Thank you very much, brynn
