0.43 unable to open existing SVG files
by H.Fagard
Hi all,
I have downloaded and installed yesterday Inkscape 0.43 (MacOS X version).
It launches fine, but if I try to open a SVG file, either created
with the former version of Inkscape or with Adobe Illustrator, I get
an error message saying:
"Failed to load the requested file /Users/hf/..."
although the file preview is displayed properly in the open dialog.
I have then tried to create a new file with Inkscape 0.43, quit
Inkscape, re-launch it, and tried to re-open the file Inkscape 0.43
had just created: same result, failed to load the file.
Fortunately I had kept my former version of Inkscape so I could revert to it.

Teeny tiny print
by Edward Hume
OK, I'm an old guy. But Inkscape 0.43-1 for Windows32 does not use my
system's fontsize definitions for its menubars and menus. Instead, I
get this really tiny type.
This is a usability issue. In Windows, we have been able to set our
own fontsizes systematically. Inkscape should follow the system. When
you young guys hit 50, you'll want larger type, too.

From Inkscape to Flash
by Tobias Eitel ... unterwegs ...
Hi everyone,
the FAQ states that "you can export graphics from
Inkscape to use it in Flash". Which is the recommended
file format?
I am planning to do a very very simple animation,
basically just some self drawn shapes moving over the
screen. The idea is to draw the backgrounds and moving
objects in inkscape and then export to flash. Are
there any reports of successfully using inkscape for
that?
T.E.

RE: [Inkscape-user] Cut off digits after decimal point automatically?
by Dave Holmes
That's a good point you raise about throwing out zeros first because
they are not significant digits.
It would be interesting to see a script that compressed the image by
removing extra digits as Henning suggested, but also allowed you to
determine how much loss you were willing to accept. With the range of
compression options such as:
- lossless
where it only throws out zeros
eg. .75000000 >> .75, 143.23123576 >> 143.23123576
- lots of loss
rounds all coordinates to nearest whole number, all opacity values to
two decimal digits (so the percentage is a whole number)
eg. .75000000 >> .75, 143.23123576 >> 143
- somewhere in between
allows a user to specify how many digits to round off
eg. .750 >> .75, 143.23123576 >> 143.231
I'm sure it would be possible to further optimize the compression by
doing things like changing path names to shorter values, remove
whitespace, convert styles to a style sheet, etc.

It seems like the numbers like 0.75000000 would be better candidates for
throwing out digits (as those zeroes are not significant).
For paths, throwing out the fractional part of all coordinates is likely
to cause visible distortions.

How to select
by Hago Ziegler
Hi,
if I have 5 objects, one over the other, partly transparent, and the
lowest is not larger, but even smaller than the other ones.
What is the most simple way to select the lowest object?
Until now, if I didn't put them all on different layers, I always lowered
the other objects, but that's a lot of work and sometimes everything gets
mixed up.
So, is there a smarter way?

Inkscape Announces 0.43 Release :: http://www.inkscape.org :: Draw Freely.
by Jon Phillips
Inkscape Announces 0.43 Release :: http://www.inkscape.org
Inkscape 0.43 is now available thanks to the work of many developers and
the sponsorship of Google's Summer of Code program which sponsored four
students to work on features for Inkscape. The main new features in this
release are:
* Connectors: Objects can be connected using auto-routing lines.
* Inkboard Collaborative Editing: You can connect to other Inkscape
users over a network and edit a shared document.
* Pressure and Tilt Sensitivity: The calligraphy tool may now use a
tablet pen with pressure and tilt support.
* Better Node Editing: You can now drag, bend, and stretch a Bezier
curve by any point and not only by a node.
* New Extensions: There are now extensions for envelope distortion,
whirling, and adding nodes.
* SVG Compliance: There is now additional support for the viewBox
element improving SVG compatibility.
* There is an online book, "A Guide to Inkscape", available at
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.php, which has been
updated to cover the 0.43 features.
Currently the Inkscape community is working on the next release which
will focus on stability and closing bugs. The next release will add an
outline viewing mode, a plan towards SVG Tiny compliance, a fill and
stroke interface to the bottom toolbar, and more application
refinements.
Inkscape is open to all types of contributions by people with all
different skill levels from around the world. We need translators, web
designers, people to help answer questions, and developers to help us
reach our goal of SVG compliance. Visit Inkscape.org and come help us
Draw Freely.
Download Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X packages:

About Inkscape
Inkscape is an open source drawing tool that uses the World Wide Web
Consortium's (W3C) scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported
SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha
blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape
supports Creative Commons' metadata, node-editing, layers, complex path
operations, text-on-path, text-in-shape, and SVG XML editing. It also
imports several formats like EPS, <nowiki>PostScript</nowiki>, JPEG,
PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based
formats.
Inkscape's main motivation is to provide the Open Source community with
a fully W3C compliant XML, SVG, and CSS2 drawing tool. Additional work
includes conversion of the codebase from <nowiki>C/Gtk</nowiki> to
<nowiki>C++/Gtkmm</nowiki>, emphasizing a lightweight core with powerful
features added through an extension mechanism, and the establishment of
a friendly, open, community-oriented development process.

Some difficulties with the new version of Inkscape
by Hago Ziegler
Hi,
since I downloaded a new version yesterday I can't use the node tools in
the tool-bar anymore.
I tried another download today - the same.
I still have an older version from oct. 26, there everything works
perfectly - like normally :-)
Further I get a little mistake-window on every shutdown of the program:
after I shut down Inkscape it tells me, that Inkscape has to be shut down
- funny somehow.
To illusrate my problem, I put some screenshots to:
