Inkscape static 686 rpm install on two FC3 installations
by Asif Lodhi
Hi,
I downloaded the static 686-specific rpm from sourceforge and
installed it on my FC3 which doesn't have any devel libs etc.
installed - I chose "personal desktop" setting when I installed FC3.
The installed inkscape is working perfectly well on this one.
However, I installed the same static 686-specific rpm on another FC3
installation with a few more things (MySQL, PostGreSQL, Apache, etc)
installed and there I can't get it to run. It emits an error that
some-lib.so is needed. Why don't I get the same error on the other
FC3 installation? What has a static rpm to do with an .so lib?
Please help.

Also, please alert the inkscape-user list when the new builds are
available, as many people there appear to have been bitten by the
small fonts issue and are awaiting resolution.

EPS font problems
by David Soukal
Hello!!
It's been some time since I asked for help here... Inkscape, that I use
daily, has grown and improved tremendously since!! Thanks guys!!
I have the following small problem: I am creating a lot of figures for
my thesis in Inkscape. I generate my plots in Matlab and use Inkscape to
fine tune the result and to add annotations. Since I am using PSFrag to
get the final annotations in LaTeX, I am exporting my graphics into EPS
format. My problem is that it seems as if the font information in my EPS
has been incorrectly coded. Let me be more specific.
I am using the font Verdana for my text. I would create, say, a vertical
arrow and I want to have a text whose center is aligned with the arrow.
I do that in Inkscape and everything looks as it should. However, in the
exported EPS, the text is slightly off the center. The reason is that
the font is different and hence the size of the text is different.
The net result is that the annotation is slightly off in the final PDF
file. First I thought that PSFrag's interpreter of PS format is broken:
I thought it cannot find either the font description in the EPS or it
cannot find the font itself (to get the dimension of the text). However,
Scribus and Konqueror have the same problem: they lack the information
about the font and use some default.
The EPS file, however, does contain the font info. But in this
compicated format
/newlatin1font {findfont dup length dict copy dup /Encoding
ISOLatin1Encoding put definefont} def
/Verdana-ISOLatin1 /Verdana newlatin1font
the references to this font look like
/Verdana-ISOLatin1 findfont
however, previous versions of Inkscape would create simply
/Verdana findfont.
Is there something I can do? Does this mean that Scribus & Konqueror do
not respect the standard?
There's workaround using PSFrag: I align the left side of the text with
the arrow and then tell PSFrag to center the text in the final PDF.
While this works OK, the problem is that the EPS does not really bear
any information about the alignment itself.. so I suspect I'll forget
when I look at the figure later :)
THANK YOU for any insight!

where is Print direct ? - unable to print
by Michal Žeravík
Hi all,
anyone got print working in 0.43?
It was working only with Print Direct to | lp before for me.
When I Print now, only 10% of graphics will be printed
and format is moved out of paper. Confusing...

Registration marks for printing
by Ben Powers
Hello!
I need to know if Inkscape is able to produce registration marks from
several channels on a drawing.
What I mean is that I have a drawing with 3 channels (white black and
grey), each with their own dimensions, but overlapping, black on grey
on white. I need to print the grey image on a white paper, and then
the black image on top of that. The method I'm using is photo-
emulsion printing.
In photo emulsion printing, one coats a screen in a light-sensitive
emulsion, then exposes that screen to light with the image (in
opaque) in between the light source and the screen. The areas where
the light reaches the emulsion become hard, and the unexposed regions
wash out, creating a negative of the image, which is then printed
much like any other silkscreen print.
In my image, I need to place both channels on one screen, and then
register them on the page using registration marks in the corners.
Can inkscape do this?
Blessed Be,

Large SVG won't export to PNG--need some help
by Benjamin Orchard
I have a largish (7+ MB) file (high-res: 7200x7200 px). When I try to
export this file the program crashes very consistently. I have tried
this on several machines, and so I am forced to consider the _very_ ugly
possibility that I will have to recreate this from scratch.
This would go fairly quickly, but we are talking about a rather complex
document here that I just don't want to redo. I have vacuumed the defs,
but that didn't help. If anyone has any idea about the best aproach to
healing files, I would greatly appreciate it. I have also checked that
the computers in question will export other files, and they do that just
fine.
As a semi-side note, one of the times this happened, it also corrupted
the svg quite nastily (when I opened it in a text-editor, it was
completely garbled), and I had to recreate the file from a somewhat
dated backup. I now keep *much* better backups, but this is getting to
be a real issue.
I even tried opening said file in GIMP (which will open svgs), but this
crashed the GIMP!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brightness
by Christopher Ellison
I have an image downloaded from openclipart. Is there a way to change the
brightness of the entire image in inkscape? I would like to do this so that
I can use the image as a watermark.
Thanks.

Re: [Inkscape-user] A nicer look for Inkscape/MacOS X: easy to implement
by Michael Moore
> I have followed Ben Powers' advice to change the interface aspect

I'd like this. I usually use Inkscape on my Linux computer, but I'm
trying to get my wife to use it more, on the Mac. Having the nicer
looking theme on the Gimp helped her make the transition more easily.
I've never actually been successfully building GTK on OSX, and don't
have developer tools on her machine, so I don't know that I can
actually help on this, but I would definitely cheer for it. :-)
Thanks,
