NEW: Unsetting paint and painting clones
by bulia byak
New in CVS:
* Unsetting paint and painting clones: Both Fill and Stroke tabs
of the Fill&Stroke dialog have a new mode button, "Unset paint" (with
a question mark icon). Pressing this button removes the fill or stroke
property from the style of selected objects, which has the visible
effect of painting them black. The usefulness of this is that clones
of such an object can redefine the unset fill or stroke, which means
you can have clones painted differently from their original and from
each other. Just use the Fill&Stroke dialog on a clone to assign it
any kind of fill or stroke paint (flat color, gradient, etc.).
Moreover, you can unset paint on some of the objects in a group, clone
the group, and paint the clone; only those objects with unset paint
will accept the paint, while others will retain their original paint.

Inkscape for AI users: a revert war :)
by bulia byak
Recently the wiki user Kwixson has significantly expanded and
rewritten the "Inkscape for AI users" document on our wiki. Some of
his edits seemed strange to me, and I proposed my variants.
Unfortunately we could not reach a consensus, so after several mutual
reverts we decided to post here and ask for the help and judgement
from the community.
The latest revision with our extensive comments is here:
http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?IllustratorUsers
Below I briefly list the things I disagree with.
0. To begin, I really appreciate the input on this document from the
user who obviously knows AI well. This is some kind of expertise which
I personally lack, so I would not be able to write such a document all
by myself. Obviously it must be written from an AI user's point of
view and use AI terminology and concepts.
1. However, Kwixson's approach seems to go further than that. He
apparently wants this document to describe _only_ those things which
you can do in Illustrator, and describe them exactly _the same way_ as
one would do them in Illustrator, even if Inkscape offers more
convenient methods. I think this is wrong.
2. With Kwixson's approach, Inkscape would always seem inferior to AI,
because you can't win just by copying. You can't be a better
Illustrator than Illustrator, you need to be different to be better.
And indeed Kwixson's text has a generally condescending tone and
phrases like "is much less responsive", "is not as intuitive" etc. We
need to be honest about Inkscape's weaknesses, but these judgements
were often not based on any real weaknesses.
3. After all, who is this document for? Those who like AI the way it
is will never switch, so it seems stupid to target them in such a
document. I think we need to target those who are used to AI but are
looking for something different and better. And therefore we must
stress our strengths and differences, explaining them in a way which
is easy to understand for AI users.
Now on to specific examples.
A. Kwixson has removed my mention of keyboard accessibility, in
particular keys for screen-pixel-sized transformations, claiming this
is not important. I've seen this attitude before from other AI users;
they tend to dismiss this because they don't have it. Those who are
really using Inkscape (or Xara, where I got the idea from, though by
now Inkscape's keyboard is superior even to Xara) will disagree.
B. In the section on shapes, Kwixson has removed my explanation of the
difference between a shape and a path and the unique features that
shapes offer. Instead he inserted an advice to do Ctrl+Shift+C
(convert to path) as soon as you created a shape, to be able to
node-edit it! This is because AI does not have shapes as such,
treating everything as paths. I think this is plain stupid. Inkscape's
shapes are clearly superior to those of any other program I know, and
we must present them as such.
C. In the section on Node tool, Kwixson provided some very cumbersome
descriptions of how to convert a segment from curve to straight line
and how to continue a path. When I proposed much simpler and more
straightforward ways to do the same, he insisted that his descriptions
closely match the way AI does this and therefore must stay. Once
again, I don't see why one should go through all this when there's a
much simpler way. Disclaimer on this point: I cannot even claim to
completely understand Kwixson's descriptions, so I may have missed
something important in them. Please anyone who knows AI's path
editing, review these paragraphs and let us know what you think.
Any feedback will be appreciated. I'm crossposting this to the user list too.

bug report, sorry: 100% CPU with text, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V
by Ralf Stephan
[Apologies for reporting here but sourceforge will not let me post
with lynx-2.8.4 (can someone tell them?)---it says something like
wrong filename for upload but I did not give any.]
Here goes:
Self-built on PPC. Start up clean. Click text, click canvas, type a
few keys, then type Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V: voila 100% CPU.
Chosing Paste from menu works as usual.
Thanks for it all,

Conversion to pdf
by unknown@example.com
Hello,
Just discovered Inkscape and I like it. Great work.
I designed a flyer and want to send it to some people so they can print the
flyer. I always did this in OpenOffice.org Draw and exported the flyer as pdf,
so everybody could easily open it.
Now I've used Inkscape to make my flyer and want to do the same. I wanted to
open the flyer in Draw and use the functionality to save it as pdf but that
won't work.
Alse the standard svg and eps won't work.
Maybe an idea to implement in the next version of Inkscape. Export to pdf.
But for now..
Is there an other way to create pdf from the flyer I created in Inkscape? I used
some jpg's and text in the flyer.
Thanks,
Marcel

NEW: more gradient stuff
by bulia byak
Some improvements since the last announcement:
- All tools that were previously able to click to select (namely node,
shapes, and gradient tools), can now do Shift+click (add to selection)
and Alt+click (select under) exactly as the Selector tool.
- Dragging a gradient handle with Ctrl+Shift will scale the entire
linear or radial gradient around its center.
- Gradient handles for each gradient are connected by blue lines for
fill gradient and yellow lines for stroke gradient.
- In gradient tool, instead of dragging, you can double-click an
object to create a new gradient centered within the object's bounding
box. If you have several objects selected, or if your selected object
is behind another one, you can double-click with Ctrl to create
gradients on selected object(s) without changing selection.
- The selected gradient handle will intercept any color/opacity
setting commands and apply them to the corresponding stop(s) of its
gradient(s). This means that at least two-stop gradients can be
completely edited without ever opening the Gradient Editor dialog. In
particular, you can use these methods to change the color of the
selected handle:
+ Dropper tool (for example, to blend a radial gradient onto
background, select its outer handle and pick the background color with
the dropper).
+ Paste style (if the pasted style contains both fill and
stroke style, the stop will take the fill style).
+ Fill and stroke dialog [this does not quite work yet because
the dialog switches to gradient button and won't let you edit the
color]
- Double-clicking any gradient handle will open the Gradient Editor
dialog with that handle's gradient loaded and the corresponding stop
selected in the list.
- Before, the actual direction of the linear gradient was not always
perpendicular to the line connecting it handles if the bounding box of
the object was not a square. This is now fixed, though the fix only
works for new gradients that you create (i.e. gradients in old files
are not affected).
In other news, Richard Hughes' text layout rewrite appears to have
reduced the memory consumption on a text-heavy document by about 20%,
and rendering is faster by the same percentage. Hooray! :)

Which is strange because he was being enthusiastic about it as well...
I think Ink is a fine short name for Inkscape. Much less awkward than
IS.
That's my 2c worth.

autopackage
by wayne
Just installed inkscape 0.41 with autopackage. When I open it, I get a message
saying that one or more extensions failed to load. When I close that window,
I get another message saying that Inkscape encountered an internal error and
will close.
In the command line, this is what appears:
SCIM: im_module_init
free(): invalid pointer 0x9453670!
free(): invalid pointer 0x9453650!
Emergency save activated!
Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now.
Do I have to uninstall SCIM? How do I get around this?
Thanks,
Wayne

Inkscape for Adobe Illustrator users

I like Adobe Illustrator. However, it is not feasible to create a cooperative
open-source project (see: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CostumeShop/ ) which
relies on an expensive piece of proprietary software. That is why I was
initially interested in Inkscape. Now that I have become more familiar with it,
I have grown to like it for its own sake. :)

That is an important and useful difference. It should be restored.

Paths and shapes are different. Adobe Illustrator users need to know that they
are different, and what makes each useful in a specific context. This
explanation should be restored.

This is stupid. The goal of this section of the document is not to slavishly
mimic the procedures of Illustrator. The goal of this section of the document
is to show how the Illustrator user how to achieve the same (or similar)
*result* in the simplest and most straightforward way possible.
