New Tutorial: Making Icons with Inkscape

"Howdy-Ho, Vector-eenos," When I First started using Inkscape a few months ago, I searched for a tutorial that would help me understand how to accomplish something with Inkscape, a practical tutorial. Maybe I didn't search hard enough, but I found very few of them at the beginner level. When I start to learn something new, I like to have a goal in mind, so I have something to work towards. Well as luck (or God ;) would have it, an opportunity surfaced for me, I was invited to contribute an icon to the pool of candidates for the Ardour free DAW (http://ardour.org) "This is my chance to write a tutorial at the same time, so others could benefit from my learning experience", was the thought. So I snapped some screenshots, fired up vim, and lo and behold, here I am writing this letter. Website re-design contest on deviantART!

Hey all! The inkscape deviantART community is holding a contest for a makeover to the Inkscape website (http://www.inkscape.org). All of the details (which I will post below as well) can can be found at: http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/journal/6322909/ ---begin dA announcement--- Hey there fellow Inkscapers! Many of us have seen Inkscape evolve from back in the days of Sodi Podi into the powerful program that we currently know it as. Unfortunately the website has not quite followed along at the same pace. ;) Which brings us to the next official inkscapers contest, a makeover for the website! Basics: *The goal is to show off what inkscape can do when put to use in the area of Web Design. *You will need to make a new Header, Footer, and CSS to replace the existing ones. *Upload a preview image & 7z/zip/tar file of your submission to your gallery or scraps on deviantART and post a link below. Rules: *All submissions must be standards compliant (XHTML 1.0 Transitional & CSS) and render the same across all browsers (within reason of course). *Any images that you create for it need to be done 100% in Inkscape. We will require any original SVG files to use in case something needs to be tweaked down the road, and also to allow us to potentially serve up SVGs for the browsers that support it. *It must be a very clean and professional design. *It must include the Inkscape logo in the site header. *Any submissions using copyrighted materials (unless appropriately licensed for our use) or offensive/inappropriate content will automatically be disqualified. *Have fun! Deadline: *September 15, 2005 Prize: *Having your design be our new look and feel for the website... and of course credit for your work. Judging: *Preliminary judging will be done by the Inkscape community on deviantART, when we have an official “Top 3”, the judging will then be turned over to the inkscape developers for final judging. CMYK-colour

Dear readers of this list, I try to create a CMYK-colour with Inkscape 0.42 on a Debian Sarge System. However, if I use the CMYK-tab in the filling dialog, I can not enter colours like 5 % C, 50 % M, 75 % and 5 % K, the number always change upon entering the fourth value such that one value is 0 %. Of course I do not get the colour I want. It seems that you can only CMYK colours were one out of the four percentages is zero. Is the CMYK-colour tab working for other users as it should, or is this a bug encountered by others, too? Yours sincerely Tobias Hilbricht

Announcing Inkscape Testers community

Hi all, As discussed a few weeks ago, we'd like to form a new community focused on testing of Inkscape. If you are interested in helping Inkscape in ways other than coding, this may be the place for you. Thanks to rejon's fix to wiki, we now have a place to collect information related to testing of Inkscape: http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?TestingInkscape An inkscape-tester mailing list is also available for you: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/inkscape-tester There are many ways to test inkscape. Already, many people have contributed greatly to inkscape by simply reporting issues they discover during ordinary use. The Inkscape Tester community will seek to push beyond this by doing more aggressive, focused testing. Our community's goals will include the following long term goals: * Show that Inkscape is fully SVG compliant with all SVG specifications. * Give developers confidence that if bugs are introduced to the codebase, they will be identified and reported to them swiftly. * Ensure Inkscape's files can be loaded into all other compliant SVG software, that Inkscape runs equally well on all platforms, and that Inkscape can be used easily with a range of other open source desktop applications. * Prove that Inkscape's usability is best in class. * Track Inkscape's performance and help motivate its improvement to become the fastest, lightest weight, and most efficient drawing application available. These are ambitious goals, but through testing we can help pave the way for them to be achieved. Gradient fills not exported to postscript or EPS?

Hey-ho, I exported some diagrams to postscript, then converted these to PDF with ps2pdf under Linux. (very easy, and works well). But I noticed that anything with a gradient fill loses the fill completely. I figured that perhaps the PDF was borken, but even just firing up ghostscript (gv file.ps) shows the same result. I didn't use any transparency in my gradient stops. If you want to test for yourself, create a document with a simple gradient filled shape. Export to PS or EPS, then view this (or convert to PDF and load the sucker into acrosplat.) You'll get an empty shape! text-to-path not working

I'm using Inkscape 0.42 / WinXP and I can't get the text-to-path tool to work. I downloaded some text-to-path example svg files and I can see the result, but I can't do it myself. Any ideas? Thanks.

arrows on paths -> setting colour ?
