But any measure tool would work "after the fact", by clicking on some
points in the drawing and measuring them. Is that not so?

Ah, that I added it long ago. Try dragging with Ctrl+Alt in Node tool.

A measure tool in the sense of what the GIMP has, yes. But for
precision and numerical entry (very important), you have to select
the actual nodes. That is, this should work from the node tool, not be
another tool. Select 2 nodes of 1 segment, read the distance (= lenght
in case of a straight line), see it's not what you want, enter desired
value ... that's the kind of workflow I'm about.
Actualy, wether the nodes are the ends of one segment or not isn't
important, linear distance could always be measured and changed
(moving the nodes in a colinear fashion). There should just be a
way to make one node stay in place or to move both by the same amount
(could be just likw with Align and Distribute).
> Ah, that I added it long ago. Try dragging with Ctrl+Alt in Node tool.
Cool, thanks. One has to be carful, otherwise it jumps around, though.

I'm afraid I don't have a Windows key on my keyboard. (IBM Model M)
Am I missing a (m)any other features by not having alt+drag. All of a
sudden I'm left wondering. Is there an easy way to change the key
bindings in Inkscape?

So, what you need is not really a separate tool, but a way to see and
enter numeric coords for nodes, first. For that we have an RFE. Then
we can build on that to measure distances and angles.

You can use the Pen tool for most of this (though not all):

But keeping angles at a node fixed will in most cases turn straight
line segments into curves as you drag it. Is this what you want?

That's realy only good for when you actualy create the segments.
After the fact it's not precise enough.

Nope. Say you have a parallelogram and want to keep the angle of the
left side, but don't care about the angle of the upper line. With this
option (however triggered ui-wise), you could move the upper left node
only colinear (congruent was the wrong term) to the left segment.
A real world example i've had is a letter V and tweaking the hight of
the right end of it. The 2 nodes have to be moved colinear to the sides
of the right arm of the V to keep all angles the same.

Bug Organizer person needed
by Bryce Harrington
For the 0.44 release, we will be making an attempt to close critical
bugs in the bug tracker. However, first those bugs need to be
prioritized.
We have a system for prioritizing bugs, and it's pretty straightforward
to do, even by someone with minimal technical experience. Thus this
makes an excellent task for someone who wants to contribute to Inkscape
but haven't found other tasks they're comfortable doing.
Basically, you go through the bug tracker and review bugs set to
priority 5 (the default). If it involves a crash, data loss, or other
serious issues, mark it critical (9). Otherwise, mark it 6 if it looks
important, or 3 if it looks like a lower priority issue.
If you're interested in helping in this area, contact me either on IRC
or by email, and I can set up your access and help you get started!
Thanks,
Bryce

layer icons
by Jakub Steiner
Howdy.
I'm very pleased by the introduction of a layer window. Will help
greatly to manage more complex artwork.
I noticed however the button icons are quite poor in doing what they
should - being easier to distinguish than text labels. They all include
the rectangle signifying "layer". But the fact that this element appears
on evey single one of them makes it nothing but visual noise.
I suggest simplifying those icons to the core of what they are trying to
say. Use distinguishable silhouettes, color. An image is worth more than
my poor writing:
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/stuff/visual-noise.png
Having said all that, I don't think the metaphor for delete you see on
the mockup is particularly strong.
cheers

scripting with inkscape
by Cornel Ghiban
Hi,
Is there a manual for scripting inkscape with python?
Tried to find it but nothing so far.
Also can this be done:
Having a lot of (small) eps files, open each one in turn, copy/extract
all objects to a master document at a certain position, close file
etc, and finaly save master document?
Thanks,
