Remove unecessary nodes from path

Hello, "Simplify path" has the disadvamtage that it cuts so many nodes away that the new path looks different. Is it possible to get a second version of that command which tries to remove as many nodes as possible without changing the shape? Fellow Scribus and Inkscape users, I've been pondering how people may be drawn more actively to open source software, and it has occurred to me that the approach to convert closed-source lifers with “human-friendly” messages is working quite well for the Ubuntu folks. Giants like Adobe and Redmond have long since forgotten that people are the goal, so the environment is ripe to reach discontented masses. Letting them know about our experiences could help. What do you all think about sharing testimonials about Inkscape and Scribus – talking about how these programs, along with The GIMP, have helped your studies, career, et cetera? Because Scribus and Inkscape are two of my favourite apps, I would be happy to receive, edit and process such testimonials and then turn them over to whomever would care to publish them (preferably Scribus and Inkscape site maintainers). Tracing comics

Hello, I have an image with relatively few colors (32) but only about eight of them are really used. It's a comic-style drawing, so there are many, large color areas. The rest of the colors is used to antialias between these 8 colors. When I try to trace this image with multi-scan/color, I get paths with a large number of nodes (roughly 6000 per color). These cannot be reduced because the colors immediately start to leak. One of the problems is a red blob at the bottom of the image. Without stacking, the result is not very good. With stacking, I get an insane red path behind all the rest of the image! Therefore, I'd like to discuss these optimizations: 1. First find out which color is used how often. Then for tracing, sort the colors from least to most used. This way, seldom used colors will only need small paths. Even better, if colors don't overlap (just do a simple bounding box check), handle them as one layer. 2. First, create one path which contains all the black parts of the image. Then, while looking for other colors, ignore the black pixels. Instead, while searching, simply go on as if the black pixel had the same color as the non-black pixel you just came from. Only remember the position of the last non-black pixel. When you hit the next non-black pixel, compare it with the last one. If they are equal, connect the two (as if there was no black between). If they are not, use the stored position as the border. Finally, after all colors have been traces, overlay the group with the black trace. This should give much better results for comics because the black lines cut the other colors into very many small areas. Maybe the "foreground" color should be configurable to allow to do the same with images which use white lines, etc. Regards, -- Aaron "Optimizer" Digulla a.k.a. Patches

Greetings, I have a HPphotosmart 1315 printer with XP. I only get the 115 meg print file no matter what way I save it.... Is there a patch yet or a work around.... this is a great program, but this large print spool bug is stopping this in it's tracks for me. Putting a bitmap into a shape?

Hi there! Is it possible to put a bitmap into a shape? What I try to do is, that I have a text. I transformed it into a shape and now I want to fill it with a bitmap. [Q] Inklscape on WinXP with Wacom Intuos 3 - slow!

Hi, I have a Wacom Intuos 3 Graphic Tablet, and I'm trying to use this with Inkscape on WindowsXp. And it is slow!I Movement of the cursor, without even moving anything, lags behind about 1 second. I noticed that I have the same problems with .43 and .44, and I'm sure it worked before on .43. I have once done an update of the wacom driver, but I'm not sure when my problems started related to the update time. Sadly I haven't used inkscape quite some time (it woas so painfully slow ;-) . BTW, my current driver version is 4.96-7. Does anyone know about these problem. And, preferably, what to do about it? Thinks, Ingo

Printing to different paper sizes (Win32, Inkscape .44)

Hiho, what is the best way to print a drawing to different paper sizes (A4, A1)? Say one has a drawing that was made for page size A4 (using the borders that inkscape draws when setting that pagesize in the document settings), and wants to print it on A1/A0 (or a .ps file with that size). Simply selecting a larger paper on the printer options doesn't work as expected - inkscape will not use the whole paper, but only a part of it that has the size A4. I could resize the whole drawing to match the new paper size, but re-doing so for every new print (or whenever the papersize changes) is a bit annoying, and sometimes inkscape messes it up. So is there some print-option that allows to "resize drawing to match paper size" or similiar? The question already came up some months ago on this list, but it seemed like noone knew a solution. The used version is 0.44 on Win32. Thanks a lot eph (sorry if this mailing shows up twice)

inkscape and version control/document management

Anyone using Inkscape with CVS or any other version control or document (CVS/Subversion) management system (WebDAV) on a regular basis? To rephrase I am wondering if anyone is checking their SVG documents into a version control system (VCS) of some kind? The reason I ask is I have noticed a trend of requests asking for various advanced Save and Undo features. The task seems like it would be better served by using a document manage system of some kind, and I suspect it may there may be users doing something similar already. I know Adobe includes WebDAV support to provide some basic document management. I also vaguely recall Gnome VFS can be built to include support for various file systems including ones like WebDAV but I do not know if anyone is secrectly using Inkscape with Gnome VFS and WebDAV enabled. I am hoping that if people are already using document management systems or more complicated options such as checking all their files into CVS then we might be able to discuss it here. Afterwards summarising it in the Wiki might help users make the most of the features Inkscape already has rather than attempting more awkward approaches involving undo histories or autosave features.
