I'm not saying that vectors should never mix with bitmaps. I'm saying that, considering the current state of the tools, maybe it's not the best idea to replace a good bitmap manipulation program with a vector illustration program. In the future this distinction may be more subjective.

Hi, due to my Ubuntu upgrade yesterday, I'm actually not sure if my last post made it to the list, so here it is again. Here's a link to my latest attempt at using Inkscape for photo retouching: http://home.arcor.de/ccyrny/images/bild015_neg.nr.n15a._detail_4x.jpg For me, this is better than mere bitmap editing, due to the necessity to edit larger areas, where the clone brush doesn't work so well. The keys of the technique I used here are a) that the inserted vector shapes are slightly blurred, b) that they are semi-transparent, in order to blend better with the rest of the image. My work flow: a) Importing the photograph into Inkscape (as a PNG or TIFF). b) Drawing the vector shapes.This implies single-color fills as well as linear gradients where necessary.(Shapes where 'Stroke' is disabled are more flexible for retouching.) c) 'Select All'. d) Exporting the final image for fine-tuning into Gimp, CinePaint, Krita, or whatever (I'm working under Ubuntu Linux). e) Fine-tuning, final adjustment of color levels, advanced Unsharp Mask. combining complex paths (Ctrl + K); 0.47 freezes, 0.46 fine

Hello again, I opened a complex dxf-drawing (saved as pdf from SolidWorks). File A) combined 1700 objects with "Ctrl + K": Inkscape 0.46-->1sec; Inkscape 0.47-->80sec File B) combined 3000 objects with "Ctrl + K": Inkscape 0.46-->2sec; Inkscape 0.47-->freezes This really looks like a major bug. I am afraid with these kinds of complex drawings I´ll have to stick to 0.46 until it is fixed. Can anyone confirm this kind of behaviour? 0.47 too slow with complex drawings plus tablet

I have been using inkcape 0.46 professionally for technical illustration for quite a while now. Most of our linedrawings are based on 3D-Cad data. The model is saved from SolidWorks as a as a dxf-drawing (Well I save it as a pdf). Importing these complex models in Inkscape results in up to 50.000 single paths (objects). Working with 0.46 is almost on the limit, but in outline mode it runs ok. So far with 0.46 I did not notice any difference between speed when working with mouse or with a wacom tablet when working with these complex drawings. With 0.47 the behaviour when using a tablet really is worrying: a) Drawing a bezier curve with the pen tool is delayed; the canvas is not responding immediately with pen touch. b) I cannot add nodes with my tablet, by simply touching the path (Strg + Alt + click) c) text tool is not responding propperly Surprisingly with the mouse: a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47. with tablet: with small drawings a,b,c run smoothly with 0.47 (but not with complex drawings) A new user (using a tablet) would certainly be dissapointed about inkscape. Luckily I have started with 0.46 and don´t want to swapp inkcape with any other tool. Can anyone of you confirm this weird tabelt behaviour? If so, shouldn´t I post a bug about this? Screen, icons and themes

Hi, all. I was playing around with 'inkscapec.exe' because now I can see several output message that I had not idea. One of those is the following: (inkscape.exe:3660): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'object-visible'. The 'hicolor' theme was not found either, perhaps you need to install it. You can get a copy from: http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases I know nothing about GTK but, since I am a Windows developer I became curious of how can I change some elements of the Inkscape interface without recompile the software. I did a little search in the Inkscape.org WEB site but I didn't find anything. Someone could point me to a reference place? Thanks a lot, Alessandro Antonello

Problems with SVG

I'm not sure if it's my browsers (I'm certain it is) or the image itself (fairly certain it isn't), but I thought I'd ask for opinions. I made a real basic image[1] (just trying to get used to the controls) and decided to check it out in my favorite browser (and the other two I have installed). I was not happy with the results[2]-[4]. IE8 just tries to download the file! compiling 0.47 dependency hell

I am attempting to compile 0.47 on Slackware 13.0. I run configure then hit a snag: configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc I have downloaded the code from the URL mentioned above, it compiles fine. Then I try to compile Inkscape, and it still gives me the above error. I did "make uninstall" on the gc package and downloaded the exact 6.4 package. Compiled it...still no joy. Uninstalled that. Went to Slacky.eu and downloaded a precompiled gc 7.1 and installed that... Still getting the same error. What am I doing wrong? Is it looking for some sort of development headers? If so...whereinheck do I get those?

Issues with pdf output and rasterized effects.

Howdy Folks, I'm using 0.47 on OS X (10.5.8/Leopard). I've run into a problems trying to export PDFs. Here is a test file I'm working with: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test.svg If I save as a pdf with the following options: - Convert texts to paths (checked) - Rasterized filter effects (unchecked) - Resolution for rasterization (600 dpi) - Export area is drawing (unchecked) - Export area is page (checked) I produce the following pdf output: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test-not_rasterized.pdf which looks right, but eliminates the blurred elements. Next I try to save using the following options in order to preserve the blurred portion of the figure: If I save as a pdf with the following options: - Convert texts to paths (checked) - Rasterized filter effects (checked) - Resolution for rasterization (600 dpi) - Export area is drawing (unchecked) - Export area is page (checked) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1901170/Inkscape%20Tests/test-not_rasterized.pdf Basically checking "rasterize filtered effects". Some of the blurred elements look fine, but several components of the drawing disappear completely. Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong here? -- John M Harrold
