A response said that this was fixed in the CVS. 1) Exactly what version is this fixed in? In gentoo (unmasked version) I am running .41-r1. 2) Could someone explain a little more about the kerning and how it relates to the drawings? Specifically, what do I need to do (and what should I not do) to get my drawings usable with psfrag. Thanks.

Rotating objects

In Inkscape, if you select more then one object and do a rotation transform, it rotates both objects as if they were one. For instance, if you have a horizontal line of squares and rotate them 90 degrees clockwise through the transform dialogue, you get a verticle line of squares. However, I want Inkscape to rotate some objects like it does with the "rotate 90 degrees" button. It is tiresome to select one object after another and rotate it 45 degrees or some other number that isn't a multiple of 90. Is there some way to turn off the "smooth" or "symmetrical" (I am thinking it is smooth), default which appears to occur when dragging a second handle out from a bezier shape node? It is exasperating. I just get a curve positioned the way I want, and need to do something on an adjacent curve, but when I drag out a handle..."sproinnnggggg" there goes my carefully positioned first curve, then I have to unlock the handles with "make corner", reposition my first curve (again), and then move on to the second curve. Also, a few times I have mistakenly made a handle where I didn't want one. Is there a way to "return" the handle to the node? I have just positioned it back as close to the node as possible, but it isn't quite the same and then if I want to move the node, I keep grabbing the handle by mistake. Why do things slow down so much when I zoom in on a curve? Up close, it seems to take forever to drag a node to a new position (and my designs aren't all that complex). A couple of times, I have moved something, but for some reason, the mouse doesn't "let go" of the node right a way when I release the mouse button. The next thing I know, the node I just so carefully moved is "sproiiinnngggg" way over where my mouse now is. The first one that comes to mind...and maybe there is already something like this and I ain't found it yet, is the object equivalent of text to path. In other words, take an object, or series of objects, and repeat it, either oriented "perpendicular" to the path at a given point (ala the text function), or oriented as it is to start, but repeated along the path. Either one with a user specified interval. Next would be perhaps some kind of sine wave function, with options for wavelength, amplitude, and various types of distortion, i.e. sawtooth (if you want to reverse it, just flip the object in the opposite direction), square wave, and "clipping" of the wave. It might also be possible to use a second wave to "cut" sections of the first wave or amplify them...not really sure what could be done with such a thing, but it might be useful. It also might be interesting to make the gradient tool work in conjunction with this "wave" tool, you could specify whether the gradient would start at the center of the wave's amplitude and fade in/out toward the center/edges. Maybe all of the above is possible with existing functions somehow or other...I am pretty new to Inkscape and have just begun to explore it's possibilites. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Checkerboard illusion would make a great inkscape sample

I saw this today in a blog post: http://web.mit.edu/persci/people/adelson/checkershadow_illusion.html It's obviously visually astonishing, and my first thought was that it would make a great sample in inkscape, although perhaps not distributed without permission. Unfortunately, I'm not yet able to make the basic perspective shapes in inkscape, much less the convincing visual illusion of shadow. If any expert inkscape user with good perspective-, alpha- and gradient-fu wanted to try this one, it would make a one humdinger of a tutorial. Thanks. I dunno what the deal was/is. I got it to work. First I had to "unflow" the text to frame (which seems to be the default), then text to path worked just fine! I did manage to solve my text to path problem...before seeing all the helpful replies, but thank you anyway, I appreciate it. I have already used Inkscape to create a very cool lookin' personal logo, which I then exported to Gimp and gussied up with some textures and bump mapping. I find the path tool in Inkscape to be easier to work with than that of Gimp, plus I can more easily scale what I have made. This program is incredible. Hello, I am not able to attend a svgopen.org in Enschede, yet have a paper, Introduction to the Open Clip Art Library and am scheduled to present this in Enschede as part of svgopen.org for 2005. Would anyone be willing to present the project on my behalf? I have the slides, paper, and talk all prepared, and it would just be a matter of schmoozing and talking with participants. If I can't find someone to do this, then I will have to remove the presentation and maybe paper from the conference...which I really don't want to do. I have downloaded InkScape 4.2 both the windows and linux versions. So far I really like it, very cool. But so far there is one feature that I just cannot seem to get to work: Text to Path. I draw the curve (bezier), I make some text, I select the text and the curve together with shift-click, I go up to the menu for text and select "text to path"...and absolutely nothing happens. I have read the insructions for this several times to see if I am missing something, but I am doing exactly what they tell me to do, and I get zip. This is one of the major reasons I was interested in this program. I get the same result with both win and linux versions. Halp! plotters and Inkscape

Hi. I just subscribed to the list, and so forgive me if I'm bringing up a settled topic. :o/ I was just wondering if Inkscape handles plotters. If not, what software (pref. open-source) do you guys use for running your plotters on Windows, Mac, and Linux? My wife uses a Roland plotter to cut vinyl and flock. Right now, the only app she has is Dr. Stika, which she says is crap. The only other package she knows of is Ultra-something, and it's like a thousand bucks. She manipulates the images in Illustrator and Photoshop, but needs better software to actually run the plotter. I was hoping that Inkscape supported this functionality, maybe with a plugin or third-party add-on. Is there any hope? Thank you, Shawn Milo

Inkscape 0.42 on Mac OS X

I can't seem to get Inkscape 0.42 to run on my PowerBook running Mac OS X 10.4.2. If I double-click on Inkscape to launch it, X11 starts up just fine, but Inkscape never starts. If I try to launch Inkscape after X11 is already running, the Inkscape icon appears briefly then disappears on my dock. Any ideas, anyone? Any help is appreciated. John Cradock kananga@...155...

I'm having problems adjusting the outline thickness in the Stroke Style window. Once I start changing the thickness, it jumps up high and won't go below 16pt. anymore while the default seems to be 1000 pt. This is too thick to be of any use for me. Install problem

I installed the static RPM for v 0.42 without any apparent problem, but when I try to run it I get the following error: inkscape: symbol lookup error: inkscape: undefined symbol: g_option_error_quark Version 0.41 runs without problems. I am using Mdk v 10.1. Has anyone else had similar problems? -- Bungee

As to a 'realistic' use...maybe it doesn't exist. The only nice reason for it that I had thought of was that I could rotate or do operations on any of clones rather than restricting my operations to the original (really my comment came from noticing how Geometer's Sketchpad handled clones). Granted, this isn't much of an 'advantage' especially since you can always find the original. However, if you are dealing with many clones, it might be easier just to work with whatever clone you wanted. Again, if the original and the clone are indistinguishable (meaning operations on either affect both), I think that this is more true to the idea of what a 'clone' is thought to be by most users. So if a realistic use case is established, I think it could be done with the functionality already in inkscape. Clone Tool and Feature Discussions

Hi, I'd like inquire about some features. The clone tool: First of all, it reminds me of Geometer's Sketchpad...a program I used while in high school to make complex geometric drawings. It would be nice if Inkscape implemented some features of Geometer's Sketchpad as, IMHO, it would make drawing easier. When I think of "clone", I think "indistinguishable." As a user, it doesn't make any sense that the original object has properties that the clone does not...namely, if I rotate the original object, then the clone will rotate...but if I rotate the clone, the original will not rotate. It seems the the current clone implementation is more like a "copycat" or "leader/follower" type relationship. It would be nice if Inkscape allowed for BOTH mechanisms: copycat and clone. When you do copycat, the copies will mimic the original, but the original will not mimic the copy. When you do clone, either object will mimic the other object since they are indistinguishable. --- Geometer's Sketchpad has a feature where you could add a "point". Let me give an example of how this was used: You create a circle. You add a "point" to the circle. This point is linked to the circle. If you move the cirlce, the point moves with the circle. Additionally, the point can be moved, but its movement is constrained to the circle. Suppose I make a smaller circle using the point as the origin. This smaller circle is now linked to the point. Thus, if I dragged the point along the bigger circle, I would also be dragging the smaller circle around the circle. This feature would be very nice to have. Suppose I made a curved line. I could add a point to the line, and then I could create another object using that point. Moving the point (along the curved line) would move the object that was created from the point. These 'points' are VERY powerful tools. ---- In Geometer's Sketchpad, one had the ability to clone-reflect an object about a line. Upon doing so, there would be two indistinguishably, linked objects. If you moved one object closer to the reflection line, then the other object would move closer to the reflection line. Notice, it didn't matter which object you chose to move. This would be a VERY NICE feature in Inkscape...and I think it is pretty clear how useful it could be. --- Often, I find that I want to rotate many different objects about the same point...but not necessary all at once. This means, that I need strict placement of the roatation point---as any difference is usually noticable. When dragging the cursor, the coordinates are show in the status bar, but is it possible to exactly specify the coordinates? --- Geometer's Sketchpad also allowed you to draw perpendicular lines....or draw bisecting angles....or make a midpoint between two points. I believe these will be taken care of when Inkscape implements snapping to objects (please correct me if I am wrong). Corel Draw currently supports this. You can snap to the center of an object, the midpoint of a line, to a quadrant, and to a node. Anyway, this is a wonderful program. Inkscape 0.42 release

This weekend the Inkscape 0.42 release was branched and tagged, and packages posted. Congrats to everyone that participated in this release! With CVS now tagged and branched, this means we are past the hard freeze. The codebase is now open for commits. Regarding CVS access: If you need access, the rule is that you must have two patches accepted. I know a *lot* of people had patches accepted, so there's probably a fair number of you who qualify. If this describes you, please email your SourceForge ID to me or another admin. (Note that you can continue using the patch tracker if you prefer, the CVS access is given for your convenience.) Our final step to complete the release is to get word out about the release. Rejon is creating and distributing release announcements, but I would also like to strongly encourage others to send out word. Please help us get word out about Inkscape 0.42. Tell people about the nifty new features it has; show off examples of the cool things you're able to do with it; write articles about it in some of the online news sites; find new mailing lists or websites to send our announcement; demo it at LUG's or other OSS gatherings; help friends or family members install it. Looking further forward, I think there is a general concensus that we want to get 0.43 out more quickly than 0.42. This is mainly to give the SoC students a chance to participate in an open source project's full release cycle. We're hoping that 0.43 can be done on the order of a month or two. Bryce
