A question about the Perfect bound cover extension.

This extension is unique in the world of Open Source Software. There is one parameter that is unclear. If one specifies the cover thickness, which in turns changes the spine width, does that number represent the thickness of one side of the spine or both sides? There are choices for PPI, caliper, width, bond weight and so on. But it is not clear whether this assumes that the number entered is for one side of the cover or both sides. For example 360 Digital Books (now owned by Whitlock) provides an number of 0.034 in their spine formula, which represents both sides of the spine. What does the Inkscape extension expect in that parameter, one side or both? The true answer will be added to my updated version of the book referenced below, where I recommend the Inkscape cover template for use with Scribus designed covers. A cover designed exclusively in Inkscape will still need the above question answered. Why don't I just write a book on an Inkscape designed cover? Patience little grasshopper. That is my next project. Inkscape lacks the ability to produce a PDF document with inherent CMYK color model, and also lacks the ability to produce a PDF X/1-a:2001 formatted document as required by many printers, particularly in the USA. Scribus can do both of these, but lacks a built-in Perfect Bound facility like Inkscape. So my current recommendation is to start in Inkscape and finish in Scribus. SVG XML re-write malformation

Community, I am having an issue with Inkscape rendering SVG image differently based on the way the SVG is written out. I start with a simple base case where text is positioned within the drawing and save the file via Inkscape using Inkscape's default file type. I then use PoswerShell to parse the SVG file via XML parser and re-save the SVG file. I did not add, delete, or modify the contents of the file. The only thing that did change was how the elements are pretty printed to the file. The same XML components are there and in the same order. But instead of having a separate line for say each attribute, the attributes would all be on the same line. When Inkscape's reloads the SVG file, I see the alignment of the objects are off. Because the image is saved as an XML document, I would not expect the rendered out come different soley based on line returns in the file between attributes and elements. I wanted to report this to the community at large and see if there is a better workaround than what I found. Below is the simple PowerShell script that opens and saves the SVG file to test with. $path = "C:\Calendar\test.svg"; $xml = [XML](Get-Content $path); $ns = @{dns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"}; $xml.Save($path); I do not believe at this time the issue is with PowerShell, but merely the layout of the XML results in different behavior, though the content is still the same. My workaround consists of saving the SVG image not as default format, but as plain SVG format. While this works, I then forfeit many advantages of using Inkscape, mainly layers in my case. Remove rectangle

Hi folks New to inkscape -- thanks for this super tool! We are wanting to use inkscape for for making (online) lectures. Hope you will be patient with this somewhat non-standard usage :-) There are some other tools more suitable for this like jscribble and xournal however the handwriting with the calligraphy pen of inkscape is really outstanding. The only fly in the ointment is that rectangle in the center. Can I remove it? If not can I make it exactly as large as the screen? Thanks Rusi

Hi again, After some thought, I wonder if I might not have been very clear about continuing to participate in writing a release announcement. When I first submitted my draft, I did not realize that it was to be written for Inkscape users or artists. In addition to that, I didn't realize that the 3 referenced previous release announcements were NOT written for Inkscape users or artists. When Elisa Godoy de Castro Guerra says "all these documents are really code oriented" and "Actually the first sentences are all oriented to the code, who is not attractiv for designer people." I don't know what she means. And to be perfectly clear, I really have not the slightest idea what she means! As an Inkscape user and not a developer (or hacker or coder), I don't have any problem understanding the previous release announcements. So for those reasons, I don't think I have the necessary skills to write the release announcement for 0.91. I'm happy to contribute to the Inkscape community in whatever way I can. But for this, it seems I don't have the right skills. Perhaps these things have already been decided, but it seems like a reasonable point to make. Artists or designers make up only a portion of Inkscape users. As I participate in Inkscape forums, day in and day out, there are plenty of people who are asking for support, who do not come from and an artistic or designer background (maybe as much as half). So if the announcement is to target artists/designers, won't that leave out people from a lot of other professions or backgrounds or communities? Release Marketing

Hi All, I'm following up on Bryce's call for volunteers to help out with marketing. We need to have a release announcement prepared for Inkscape 0.91, and we're wanting to try having it prepared by someone who is not one of our developers this time. In case you're wondering why, it is one of the things taken away from Google's Mentor Summit this year. Simply, developers should not write things of that nature as they tend to be too critical of their own work. If you're interested in seeing what we've had in the past, I've linked what was posted to deviantART for 0.48 [1], 0.47 [2], 0.46 [3]. Please let us know if you want to have a go at it (or just respond with a draft). Worst case, if nobody takes it on, I have prepared a version of it following the same formula from the past couple releases. 1. Congratulations on what is simply an amazing build. I had my first voice-to-voice convo with Josh Andler today, and it was a kind of thrill for me. 2. I am happy to help in any way I can to spread the word on the new release in social media and elsewhere. 3. Josh explained how I could edit objects from the lovely new objects palette. I did not know that objects were clones, and so did not know to unlink from original in order to be able to ungroup/edit path. The hint simply says 'ungroup to edit', but that does not unlink the clone from the original, and so the node tool has no effect on ungrouped objects. Is there a way to make this more self-evident? Maybe not before the release, but perhaps in a future revision? Best, and congrats on a great release. John. file that opens in 3 seconds in Google Chrome takes 10 minutes in inkscape

Hi all, I wonder whether the file is formed in such a way that inkscape has a hard time with it? Google Chrome's file dialog can preview the file instantly and then renders it within 3 seconds, wheres Inkscape hangs for minutes when trying to preview it or to open it. What inkscape does successfully is, in a few minutes, to save it as PDF from the command line using the -A switch. Saving to PDF shrinks the file from the original 8 MB down to ~800 KB. As a PDF Inkscape has no problem previewing it instantly, and opening it within 20 seconds or so. It's the only way I managed to open the file with inkscape. Given that we generate this file ourselves from our own software ( github.com/acardona/CATMAID/), I would appreciate if someone could look at the SVG example file and let us know what would be best for Inkscape regarding formatting, choice of svg vs g elements, and styling. I'd like to recruit and organize a formal team to do marketing for Inkscape. This'll involve writing copy, planning announce strategies, notifying news sites, coordinating with parallel fundraising efforts, and more. We'll be organizing an online IRC meeting soon to coordinate these activities. Sound like fun? Ryan Lerch, Josh Andler, and myself are already signed on; we've been through the release announcement process before so we're old hands. View mode in Inkscape

Hi everyone, I have an idea: add a view mode in Inkscape. That means with one click, you will hide all menus and panels; another click, everything appears again. Easy come, easy go. This has some advantages: * Load time of Inkscape and Inkview are not so different. * Inkview is lack of feature. Especially zooming. * Easy to modify the svg, instead of viewing it in Inkview or in browers. * Personally, I would like to have a separate app to view it, rather than implement it into browsers. Autofill

Hi, I wonder if we could have a auto fill option. if the page is set to A4 we create a shape or text or whatever and then select it, then copy it and then have an option to paste as many copies as possible that will fit on the page size for users that don't have a page then maybe they could draw a rectangle the size they want and auto fill could be set to use that size. handy for labels with logos but also for repeat cuts of the same sized objects. Live Effects and Images

Hello, im member from a group of people interested in libre graphics called "Grafica Libre", one member ask me for a new effect. The request is for made triangulation delaunay from a image. I think could be ?easy made from extension -there is existing code- but i want to do from a LPE because: I want to put a KNOT in each extemium of a triangle -shared with continuous triangles- who act as modifier of the final result. The thread[1] give me a brunch of links but to me the one i like more is this[2] I want to put similar controls to the LPE + ability to touch triangles, maybe could remove knots -and triangles- The problem: I ask previusly by IRC about using images in LiveEffect for use in the perspective LPE with something as "original-src", i take a response about in IRC "not a good idea inkscape strore hacked versions of images like illustratos do", but this case is diferent, because only obtain data from the image. So there is a objection about this use? Finaly... There is a multiplataform image libray bundled in inkscape for c++ or python? Regards, Jabier. Libre Calendar 2015

Hello all, I am Jehan, a GIMP developer, and user of Free Software. Anyway, a small non-profit I manage, association LILA, is organizing for a month a calendar sale with several artists using Free Software. http://librecal2015.libreart.info/ The artists are: Patrick David, Aryeom Han, Henri Hebeisen, Gustavo Deveze and Brian Beck (2 photographers, 2 illustrators, a 3D graphics illustrator). All of them use Free Software for their work and all the artworks in the calendar will be released as Creative Common Attribution. A part of the sale profit will go to the artists, and we also want to donate to a selection of Free Software: GIMP, Blender, Inkscape and Scribus. Basically they are some of the main software for Libre Graphics, after all! So if I post here, that's first to promote the project. And second, I wanted to ask the Inkscape project maintainers if that would be possible to relay the funding? A blog post, or a news on the website, or relaying through social networks (I see Inkscape is on Twitter and G+), or any mix of these would be awesome. Hi there: I´ve found a mistake in the Spanish version 0.48.4 r9939 in the window Tiling. In the tab Simmetry at bottom where said *Altura, anchura* it must be* Anchura, altura*. They are changed in the translation to Spanish version. Regards Fernando Cuesta

about scaling patterns

Hi Friends, This isn't about a problem I'm having, although the question comes up in a project I'm working on. I'm just curious about this behavior of scaling patterns. If I apply a pattern fill to an object, and I scale that object with either Selection tool or Transform dialog, the pattern is scaled, along with the object. However, if I scale the object by moving nodes, the pattern stays the same size, and just gets different boundaries. So for example, I fill a square shaped, closed path with a pattern. Let's say it's 100 x 100 px. If I scale with Selection tool or Transform dialog, so that the square now is 60 x 60 px, the pattern is scaled proportionally smaller. But if I move the nodes inwards (by 20 px each way), so that the square is now 60 x 60 px, the pattern does not get scaled. Why doesn't the pattern get scaled, when nodes are moved, like it does when scaled with Selection tool or Transform dialog? And I do understand how to edit patterns with the Node tool. So that's not the issue. I just want to understand why one way of scaling, affects the pattern, and another way of scaling, does not affect the pattern. Is it possibly related to a bug? Or if this is expected behavior, I'm just curious why moving nodes doesn't cause the pattern to change. Can someone explain? (just for my curiosity) Thank you very much :-) brynn

OPERATIONS BOOLEAN WITH TRACKS

Hello there: I want to make the operation "D*ifference*" with two tracks. One of them is a group created with a clon in mosaic: one straight line 1 x 30 column and turned 6º. The other track is a square that it was converted into an object. If I apply the operation *Difference *the information bar says: one of the objects is not a track and it can't do the boolean operation I don't understand why there is an object different than a track. Oh, I see. I didn't realize it was a template. I thought that was just an example. Would it be possible to have Guides around the yellow square inside the gray square? It would make something to snap to, for a good alignment. I guess the user can unlock those, and add guides themselves. But since it's a template, it would be convenient if the guides were already in place.....if it's possible. Maybe not possible, since the guides would have to know where they belong, depending on the size they choose. Freedom from systemd

Hi all, On Debian Wheezy, a look at dependencies indicates that Inscape depends on dbus, via libgnomevfs2-0 and some other dependency routes. Modern dbus has been co-opted by systemd, which I, and a lot of other people, are refusing to put on their computers. What would it take to get rid of all direct and indirect dependencies on systemd? Dear Inkscape experts, I'm just testing the useful features of snapping but there are some points why I find the handling of this feature by Adobe products easier. Maybe you can help me with my problems (I'm using Inkscape-0.91pre2-1): 1) Snap of non-scaled contours I've disabled the scaling of contous. When I take a line with an arrow end and snap it to a path or anything the countour is scaled during the procedure and when I release the mouse button the countour scales back to the original but this also moves the snapped point. This is definately not a feature. Is there anyone whi discovered the same effect or is there maybe a workaround oder is it a bug? 2) Snap with alignment I'd like to scale one side of an rectangle and snap it to a boundary of another rectangle which has some distance. In Adobe Illustrator I can move over the path to be aligned to and now this path is included in the snapping selection. This is a very useful handling. Has someone an idea if this is possible or might been included in future versions? Knut

Getting Inkscape to work with a graphic tablet (XP-pen)

So I just bought this cheap pressure-sensitive graphic tablet for my home rig. It doesn't do all that the big league tablets (i.e. Wacom) can do - no tilt detection for example - but who needs that? it's the pressure that I care about. Anyway, it works admirably with Photoshop, Krita, and Blender, But I can't seem to get it to work with Inkscape. I can see it's recognized in the Input Devices dialog: tablet and pen are there. I enabled the pen and set it to use screen coordinates. moving the cursor works, no problem. But drawing doesn't. When I try to draw something - anything, pen, pencil, rectangle, circle - nothing happens. Well, not quite nothing. using the pen is supposed to be equivalent to a left click but it seems to invoke the right-click menu sometimes. Other times it seems to shift the view, zooming in and panning to the left. Yet other times it does nothing. Anybody got suggestions as for what I could try to do to fix it?
