Thanks, this helps a little. But the rectangle is only an example, the drawing I'm working on is more complicated. Take for instance the map of Europe, with all coutries painted in a different color. The path-segments on each border belong to two paths, around the two bordering countries. Now if I want to edit that border, I would like to edit only one path. Is that possible? Or do I have to draw each border twice? Thanks for the help. A easy method that works for me: 1 select the two nodes you want to join and break the path (shift+B) 2 select one of the corner nodes, then use ctrl+A to select all nodes... and as you can see, only the four nodes of one half side are selected. 3 use the node-tool button "Join selected endnodes with a new segment" with these nodes selected. End nodes that were open now are joined by a segment 4 Proceed at the same way with the other half square 5 use the selection tool to select the both square-subpaths, then break apart the path (Ctrl+Shif+K). In addition to my previous answer (to personal mail, in Dutch) which covered 'node operations', you could also just duplicate the object and set the width of both the original and the duplicate to half of their origanal widths. My certificate-maker program

Hi all, You might be interested in what I did with Inkscape, YAML, and a couple hundred lines of Pthon... I teach a troubleshooting course, and a client asked for certificates of completion for all the client's students. So here's what I did: I used Inkscape to make the certificate, complete with a nice triple-line border. Everywhere that needed something specific, such as venue (for example "ABC Corp in Indianapolis, IN"), I put @variablename@...95... Most of those variables, such as venue and date range, were per-course, but the student name was per-student. I saved this Inscape file uncompressed for easy parsing. To drive the run, I used a YAML file something like what you see below my sig. I think if you look at the YAML file you can pretty much envision the Python program. The Python program looped through the YAML graduates list, and for each one: * For each key in tokens, replaced @tokenkey@ with the token's value in the Inscape file * Wrote the SVG result to an output file in run_info['output_dir'] * Converted that SVG file to a PDF My client was delighted both with the quality of the result and the speed with which I did it. Because of its native text format and its ability to do complex graphics, Inkscape provides the ideal bridge between data and graphics. Thank you for giving us Inkscape. It could also be something strange with the names of the files? Perhaps they are hidden from view by explorer? Or perhaps there are strange characters in the name that prevent them from showing up? Try changing the "view" of the folder between "list" and "icon" display...? disappearing files

Hi Everybody I am relatively inexperienced with inkscape, but so far I find it very intuitive and love the behavior of the program. I also saw Martin Owens' video and am very impressed about the ease of use. It is really good as is, but one additional feature I can think of may be to spread out the elements to a specified width / height with equal distances between each other as an optional step after the alignment. But again it is great as is. I do have one question. I'm not sure if this is specific to my computer, but when I save a file in svg it does not matter if the plain of the inkscape version, I don't see the file neither in qgis (where I want to use the file) nor in explorer or gimp. After I close and reopen inkscape, the file is there and intact. But still no other program seems to be able to see the file. I would be very thankful if someone could please get me on the right track. Thanks for your time Jake

Jake, I just realised what you described initially is not what I originally thought apologies for the confusion!! As I understand it, you'd like to distribute each object with a specified width? I'd have to say, there's been more than once I've actually wanted that feature too. I think the only way I can think of doing that right now is to actually calculate the distances using the xy coordinates and width of the objects - there might be a script add on somewhere though, perhaps others on the list know of this feature then.. Hi Jake, You can actually do this already in the "Align and Distribute pane". The "Distribute" part will put either an equal distance between objects' center, between the objects, or between the objects' outer or inner edges. Select all the objects you want to be distributed and choose one of the options :) Attached is a screenshot from my inkscape installation. If you don't have these in the Align and Distribute pane, perhaps your version of Inkscape is not current :) In terms of the file not showing up, I'm afraid I've never encountered that problem so perhaps someone else in the mailing list has..? -Chris

Inkscape issue

Hope I'm sending this to the right people. I create all my work with Inkscape and it has worked great until my last drawing. I always "save as" my documents to png's for online viewing, but the last png is missing artwork on some layers!? I've never had a corrupt document in Inkscape either. In response to your questions, I removed the cafuego PPA from Ubuntu software sources, Then installed Inkscape trunk 0.48.3.1 r9886 from Ubuntu software center. Knotter error messages still result but Inkscape is working properly. ( perhaps there is still some reference to knotter in the install/uninstall script?) Today's Inkscape update resulted in an error on my laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. If no one else can corroborate problems with today's Ubuntu Software Center Inkscape update then I won't post it on Launchpad. It's entirely possible that it's my specific installation of Inkscape, given the recent problem with outsets/insets after installing nightly build/uninstalling/reinstalling from Ubuntu ppa. (That problem went away sometime during the past week.) What auxiliary programs are needed?

I already have a fairly complete stock of publishing-related programs. So is there a list somewhere of the got-to haves for full Inkscape use? For example is Ghostscript necessary to create pdf files etc.? However, when I move the path filled with the rotation, it reverts to the non-rotated version. I'm attaching it here. Why is Inkscape doing it? Is it a bug? Handy use for Inkscape.

Given some blank forms from my doctor to fill out (pdf files) I found Inkscape to be very handy. I locked the original layer and used a new "text" layer to do the inserts. Outset/Inset problems - bug or not?

I have Ubuntu 12.04 and Inkscape 0.48+devel r12347 Two weeks ago I installed the nightly build from Inkscape, then decided against it and uninstalled/reinstalled Inkscape from Ubuntu software center. Since then the outset/inset function has generated incorrect results for some shapes. Tips: How to Invoke One Inkscape Extension from Another + Other stuff I learned when writing the extension

Hi all, here are some tips you can use from my experience on working on an inkscape extension: 1. Calling one extension from another: -------------------------------------- This is the recipe I used in Python to call one extension from another: import subprocess def id_arg(my_id): return '--id=' + my_id with_perspective_applied_text = subprocess.check_output( ['python', '/usr/share/inkscape/extensions/perspective.py', id_arg(main_path_id()), id_arg(pers_e.get_path_id()), pers_e.calc_out_fn() ] ) main_path_id() and pers_e.get_path_id() are the IDs passed to the extension as selections and pers_e.calc_out_fn() contains the path to where the intermediate SVG was written. This can be done securely by doing: temp_dir = tempfile.mkdtemp() def temp_svg_fn(basename): global temp_dir return join(temp_dir, basename + '.svg') 2. Output from inkex.Effect to a file. ------------------------------------------ The following class that inherits from inkex.Effect writes to a temporary file instead of to STDOUT.
