Selected objects sometimes don't respond to arrow keys

I'm using an 0.47 nightly from 06 Sep on Ubuntu Jaunty Linux. I've been using Inkscape (0.46) for about 8 months now for a variety of random web graphics. I'm not an art professional by any means. Anyway: in the nightly, while it's fixed some chronic crashes from 0.46, has itself a couple of quirks. One that is particularly annoying is this: I select some objects/paths, and then do something - maybe set clipping, or group, or change color; it's not completely consistent or at least it seems that way. After an operation like that, my stuff apparently remains selected (according to the UI), but subsequent attempts to use the arrow keys to move the elements around have no effect. I have to de-select and reselect the elements and then of course the arrow keys move them around just fine. I'm wondering if this may have something to do with layers, or something else about the application with which I'm not very familiar. One reliable way to make the effect happen is this: draw a rectangle, type "s" to switch to the "select" tool, and then go to the "fill & stroke* box and set "blur" to something bigger than zero. After that, the rectangle will be blurry and apparently selected, but the arrow keys won't do anything (for me anyway). -- Turtle, turtle, on the ground, Pink and shiny, turn around.

Easiest Linux Distro for inkscape 46

Since my Slackware system appears inhospitable for Inkscape despite my best efforts I want to put up another distro on its own partition just for Inkscape. My immediate target is Inkscape 46 since anything newer will probably not be easily installed. All other factors considered equal I prefer an rpm based distro. Compiling 46

When I try to compile Inkscape 46 I run into the usual lib problems. I downloaded the latest versions per the urls on the Inkscape install page but that doesn't work. I downloaded earlier versions and ran ldconfig but that didn't help. For the following products which exact versions do I need? I was successful in loading libsigc++-2.2.3. The rest don't work: gdkmm-2.4 glibmm-2.4 gtkmm-2.4 I use Slackware 13 which was just released. I installed the Boehm thingamabob (Bone Collector?). -- John Culleton

Copy/Paste to Inkscape under Mac Leopard

Hello, For school i had to change from Windows to Mac. One of the problems I run unto is that i can't copy paste for example text from a word document (cmd+v) to Inkscape (ctrl+v, X11 based). That is the problem it is installed, I can use it in other programs, but not in inkscape, it is in .ttf format, but I do not know what it is about one .ttf showing in the font list and another .ttf not showing up in that list. Bibi

I thought all the ttf fonts not showing up was cleared up in an earlier version. I was trying to use this font in the build Inkscape 0.47pre1, built Jul 3 2009, and it will not show up. Can any one shed light on what may be happening? It also does not show up in Inkscape 0.46, built Apr 1 2008 Those of use with personal die cutting machines are really lost when we cannot use the perfect font! I know it is silly but with over 17,000 fonts, we really find the perfect one and really want to use it. Thanks Bibi

snapping of guides + node editing questions

hello, one of my great latest discoveries in inkscape is the Snapping tool (or settings). however, i have a question about snapping a guide to an object/object's node - is it possible? according to the settings (Ctrl+Shift+D -> Snap) it looks like it is, but whenever i drag a guide from the ruler part of the screen, no snapping happens. what am i doing wrong? or is it a bug? also, my second point of interest is the node editing. one of the features i miss the most is the shortening of distance of two randomly selected nodes. in case you know Blender, after selecting vertices and pressing S to scale, their distance shortens/lengthens according to mouse movement. is there in inkscape any way of performing similar actions? thanks for any answer, -Adam

There are a couple of .svg "renderers" for blender (and I think they were probably the scripts you are talking about). I have only played with one of them very briefly. Seemed to work okay, but I can't remember what it was called, and I seem to remember it being kinda buggy, it was probably a year ago that I tried this. Other than that, I can't help you much. But yes, what little I did do was interesting. Blender also had, or used to have, a feature that would export a UV map as an .svg file. One thing that I have found interesting to do is to make some text (or whatever) in Inkscape, import it into Blender, and then apply a lattice modifier to it. You can deform text into some interesting shapes (and it works better than the Inkscape node sculpting thing), then render a .png file in Blender and then import that back into Inkscape and run trace bitmap on it. Blender does have it's own built in text capability, but I find it a lot easer to work with text in Inkscape, then import it into Blender for "3D-ifying". Another neat trick is to make a sort of "sheet" with text cut out of it, then import that into Blender, so you have a large surface with a text shaped hole in the middle. You can then animate a light shining through that hole using the halo feature available with Blender's lighting options. This creates a really cool backlit text effect. I have also just started to experiment with using Blender's "hooks" feature to animate imported Inkscape .svg files. "phantom" objects in .svg files

I am just curious: When you delete an object from your .svg file, does it actually get rid of the associated XML, or just not display it any more? I do a lot of stuff in Inkscape and then import the .svg into Blender for extrusion, etc. I find that sometimes I get "extra" objects in Blender when I do this, i.e., the object that was deleted. ...and I am just wondering where these objects come from...

text-decoration and overline-position / overline-thickness

Folks; SVG 1.1 provides the @overline-position and @overline-thickness attributes (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/fonts.html#FontDescriptions) and @text-decoration="overline" (http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG/text.html#TextDecorationProperties). I can't figure out how to apply such text decorations (in particular, overline) to text in Inkscape, and I'm finding that some rendering engines don't know how to display them. As a test, if one takes opens the file @ http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/images/text/textdecoration01.svg in Firefox 3.5, the text decorations aren't applied. They are rendered in Safari 4 and Chrome 2. So what's the *real* status of text decorations in SVG? Thanks in advance for your help, Bob

Slow performance on 4.5 MB file

Inkscape users, I have an Inkscape file that is about 4.5 megabytes in size. It is essentially an A4 size comic book page. One layer contains the orginal scanned pencils, which were in PNG format. The next layer are flat colours, no gradients, just simple paths with colour fills. The top layer is the inks, which were almost all created with the calligraphy pen. This seems to be where the problem is. Even just locking/unlocking the layer causes Inkscape to pause for many seconds, maybe 10 or so. My computer is by no means the latest, but it should handle these file sizes alright. I use GIMP and Photoshop on larger file sizes without any noticeable slowdown. (My computer is a 2.8GHz dual processor, with 2 GB RAM, running Ubuntu 9.04). Is it normal for a collection of paths created with the calligraphy pen to be this bulky and slow a system down? I tried removing the original scan images to try and reduce the file size, but it has not helped. Is there something I'm doing inefficiently or wrong, or is it just that complicated paths can't help but soak up lots of memory. Any advice would be much appreciated. -- Dave M G

( like the logo, http://inkscape.org/images/inkscape_button.svg ) After some search, I haven't found pages that clear say how I can use logo, and where the official location it is. Graphic Tablet not able to 'grab' objects

I'm running yesterday's SVN build, but the same behavior I had now for over a year: With the graphics tablet (wacom graphire 4), when using the pen in "Screen" mode (or "Window" mode, both have the same results - only "Disabled" shows the normal behavior), I can use the pen to draw lines and move nodes (F2), but once I switch to move objects (F1), a click on an object does not select it, only double or multiple times tapping on it sometimes selects it for me to move it around. at the same time i can do the selecting and moving with the normal mouse as it was before. So clearly something is off from the behavior in XInput in Screen mode, at least it seems the clicks (which are the taps on the tablet) are interpreted differently. Still, in all other modes (F2 'Node' mode, draw circles, squares etc.) the tablet in Screen mode works as expected. Any ideas? -- cheers, Alex

Inkscape and 2D Vector animation via Python.

Hi, Apropos to nothing much, here is some info about a Python 2D animation API I recently released: It's called "Things" and uses Inkscape as an "extended IDE" for drawing the frames and graphics that you then animate with the API. It uses python-cairo and rsvg and a bit of xml (urgh) under the hood, but you only have to deal with simple things like tweens and frames and properties to do the animations. The animations can be played in a window or exported frame by frame out to png or svg files. This lets you create Ajax throbbers and animated images by taking those files into some other process like imagemagick. You could also import the files into other software; like Blender or video apps. With Things you can: 1. Contain Things in other Things. Example: a bird flying -- the wings moving on a tween would be inside the Bird Thing which would in-turn be tweening along a path across the screen. 2. Follow paths. 3. Clip Things to any path. 4. Animate size, position, alpha, rotation and tint. 5. Detect the mouse -- buttons, drag/drop etc. 6. Display frames from 'loops' which you draw (each frame of) in Inkscape. 7. Draw any graphics that python-cairo is capable of. Including pango text, gradients, paths, images, etc. So, the idea is to use Inkscape for the visual design and Things for the animation thereof. Once this is done, you could distribute your "thingum" script, or use the export feature to take the animation to other places. If you visit the links in my sig, you will find the code, help for the API and a PDF tutorial. It's been written on *buntu GNU/Linux and it's probably best to try it on same. There are a few dependencies, but nothing you can't apt-get. The script will (I hope) help you locate what you need -- just run one of the demo "thingums". It's early days, and there will be bugs, but it's quite nice to see it actually working. Enjoy!
