Hi, I have been using Inkscape the last 2 years for my professional work. I use it mainly for scientific illustrations. So first of all I'd like to congratulate the Inkscape team for their great and important role in the open source community. Inkscape is for my type of work the best -and only- alternative for expensive software like CordelDraw. I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and GNOME. I'm using inkscape mostly for schematical purposes: flow charts, electrical or scientific diagrams, etc... Since I'm new to this group, I don't really know the etiquette, but I'll start with my whishlist. Sorry about the length of the list... (Please feel free to comment) * Multiple pages. * Printing: I have issues with it. I cannot set the type of paper for my printer, and the result is often a bad layout. * GRID snapping is a little nightmare for my kind of work. Right now, Inkscape has "snap nodes" and "snap bounding boxes". Both of them are not suitable for me. Suppose you draw an object with irregular shapes (e.g. a group of polygons and text). There should be a modus: "move by reference point". The reference is snapped on the grid, and when moving, the destination of the object is by snapping the reference point ONLY. If you move the object on a grid of say 10px, the object should ONLY move in steps of 10px without exception! As it is now, objects snap on any of the irregular shapes inside it (e.g. text, irregular polygons, etc..) and when you draw schematics, you don't want that. Furthermore, there should be a way to do "Snap to bounding boxes" with snapping to the CENTER of a thick line, NOT to the OUTSIDE of the thick line! Example: enable "snap nodes" and "snap bounding boxes". Draw a circle. The vertices will nicely align on the grid, that's how I want it. Now scale the circle by dragging the handles. Now, the circle will be completely off-grid. * Symbols: being able to make template symbols and insert them in your drawing. The symbols should have a reference point (see snapping), and parameterizable text would be great. The instances should be LINKS to the symbols, so if you edit a symbol, it should change all references. Associated features if you right-click on an instance: "edit template", "edit as new template", "make group object copy" * Being able to use objects from another .svg with a link. This way, we can make libraries of symbols. * Arrows: arrow heads should change color by changing the color of the arrow. * Swap arrows: a button to swap the beginning/end arrows. Would be very useful! * Styles: a custom list of styles Fill+Outline+Text font you can click on to set an object style. Also, double click on a style to set it as 'default'. Today, I have to click around in that dialog too often. * Fill and Outline paint swatches: list of default colors. Standard color lists, like web colors, pantone, etc... * Bug in the software today: exchanging objects across files via the clipboard does not work. * Dialog boxes: you should be able to save their layout! Now I have to open and position them every time I open a file * Dialog boxes: share dialog boxes for different files. I use the program in the same way as we use "GIMP": different open files, and floating dialogs. However, if I click on a dialog box, Inkscape immediately selects another open file, because the dialogs seems to be 'linked' with the document windows. * Text dialog: it seems to be different (not dockable) than the other dialog boxes. I wonder why... That's all for now... Hello, I'm a user of Inkscape, mainly on Windows and very (very) rarely on Xubuntu and Ubuntu. I checked in SVN for the SVG Tango icons and found the file, which I studied carefully. N.B.: I'll give here my "user" point of view, which reflects my taste and my rationale. Please, forgive me if this message isn't always "nice"... it's not meant to be aggressive, it's just that tastes in icons/applications is a passionate thing - so I'm allowed to tell my mind with passion on the matter :-) Well, re. the proposed Tango icon set for Inkscape... I do NOT want to be "forced" to test the Tango icons - let alone to be forced to use them. I hate the Tango icons. :-) The main reasons are: - they are unreadable, "undecodable". I do not need to use a magnifying glass to "decode" the current (non Tango) icon set, the icons are "sharp" and "clear". Compared to them, the Tango icons are... "wtf?... which icon is that...?" I do not want to lose time wondering each time I need to click on an icon (and it happens quite a lot in Inkscape, because I don't use the shortcuts or F-keys). Honestly, I hardly *see* the Tango icons. - they belong to the Linux world. I know they are supposed to be suitable to multi-platform applications, but in the real reality, this isn't the case, and they say "Linux", they say GTK or KDE. As I said before, I use Inkscape on Windows. Why would I need "Linux-like" icons which clash so badly with any Windows (or, I guess, Mac) theme and which I cannot decode anyway? - I do not use any other "free" software which uses the Tango icon set, such as The Gimp or..., so I don't care about "being used" to seeing such or such icons. - I believe each application can have its own style, its own icons. I hate the "applications on a platform must all look alike" concept, it's sterile, it's boring, it's dull. So, my user opinion is: if the Linux users are masochists and want to have Tango style icons for Inkscape, fine, give them a GUI to switch to Tango icons. Me, as a user of Inkscape on Windows, I just want clear, sharp, and decodable icons - just like the current icons! I pray you, Inkscape developers, please, keep the current default set as the default! Thanks! (and again... no personal attack here :-)

Hi there! I want to introduce Inkscape to the SENA <http://www.sena.edu.co/portal>office here in Cartagena de Indias <http://www.flickr.com/photos/mariedoucet/sets/72157611795508388/>. The SENA is the national service for training people in several trades. The goal is to convince them to try Inkscape and use it as the program of choice for graphic design courses. I have got technical info and examples, now I need all your Inkscape success stories from everywhere -specially on developing countries and Latin America- about Inkscape achievements and use in working, running business and being involved in big events or campaigns. By the way, a database of succes stories should be built.

Apologize if there is an all too obvious solution at hand... In trying to use Inkscape to draw (say) chemical formula/s... I cannot find a way to make text into subscripts... usually found in the text menu of (say), (ahem) Adobe Illustrator... am I missing something here? Thanks much. Henry

performance when working with many nodes

Hi, I've been using Inkscape to trace bitmaps and noticed that performance is somewhat erratic when working with a path containing thousands of nodes. When initially selecting the path with the node editing tool it draws all the nodes with their appropriate little icon, this takes an age. The other time seems to be when you select a large number of nodes, it draws all the nodes in their selected colour. When I zoom or otherwise force a redraw performance is much better. I'm not sure how the code is structured, but it seems to be optimized for small numbers of nodes being worked with at one time. Would it be possible to only redraw individual node icons when this will take less time than it would take to redraw the whole window. Of course, knowing apriori which is going to be quicker is difficult so maybe a simple test of (say) 100 nodes changing state. -- Sam http://samason.me.uk/

dxf input - subversion build

I am evaluating dxf input... found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/293940 and can find the dxf_import files mentioned in the install but there is no .dxf option in the import file formats list... is anyone else doing that successfully?

Is it just me or...

I've been using Inkscape (seemingly forever) for all my schematic drawings, and find it works extremely well for me. However there is one thing I find really annoying. Often I'll pick up a small object to copy - a connecting 'blob' for example - what then happens is that as soon as I move to where I want to place the object the pointer turns into a fist totally obscuring the place I want to copy to. This is because I *always* want to put the object on top of another - crossing lines, in this case. I have to just do the copy somewhere near, then try and position it relying on 'snap to grid' to line it up properly. Alternatively I have zoom in massively so that the object in now larger than the fist and I can see it again. For my purposes it would be far better if the pointer either stayed as a pointer all the time (with the hot-spot at the tip) or if it had to change, for it to become fine cross-hairs. Disabled may LPEs

We've moved them to an 'experimental' section, where we can improve them to later enable them again. If you are using LPEs that are now gone, please let us know, so we know on which LPEs to work! Tango icons as default set.

Since the Tango icon set for inkscape seems to be pretty complete and revised, I'd like to propose making it the default set in SVN (of course mantaining the current set as an alternative for people who preferes it). I know it is already possible to test the set easily, but I think that making it the default set will force users (of the development versions) to test it and will be a good opportunity to see if the general consensus is to leave it or roll back to the current set. It may be helpful to discover some bugs, too. What do you think?

Don't quite understand tweak tool

Inkscape users, I've recently discovered the the tweak tool, and it's been a real help in shaping objects and pen strokes. However, it has a side effect I can't quite understand. If I'm working on one end of an object, the vertices on the other end of the object will get shifted and move around to undesired positions. It seems like the Tweak tool is trying to preserve the volume of the shape, so if I pull the bottom side down, the top side will also shift down somewhat. I looked up information about the Tweak tool on the web, and it seemed that the "Fidelity" setting was the one that controlled the overall influence over the shape. But, despite what I've read, whether I set it to 0 or to 100, I still get this overall distorting of the shape. Ideally, I want to just move around vertices within the area defined by the size of the brush, or immediately adjacent. I don't want to see influence over the whole object. Is there a way I can contain the Tweak tool to localize it's influence more? I hope my descriptions and questions are clear. Any advice would be much appreciated. -- Dave M G

Copying or Duplicating Selected Nodes

Hi, Is is possible to copy or duplicate selected nodes and not the whole object-path? Sometimes I only want part of a path copied. To do this, I have to duplicate the entire path and delete the nodes I don't want. Beveled strokes?

Hi, I would like to know if there's a chance to incorporate the feature "beveled strokes" into Inkscape sometime in the not-too-distant future. (I'm not sure if SVG supports this, though). Years ago, when I was still using Windows, I had Canvas 7 installed, that had this feature, and I really liked what one can do with that. Dialog boxes...

Hi, What do you guys think of following issues? (I have posted it on Launchpad): I usually work with many different files open at the same time. Everytime I open inkscape, I have to re-open and re-position my dialog boxes. This is very cumbersome... -> Would there be a way to remember the positions and states of the dialog boxes? Both for floating and docked dialogs? Furthermore: I discovered this problem when working with many open documents. I use the program in the same way as we use "GIMP": different open files, and floating dialogs. The idea is that if I open a second document, I can use the dialog boxes which are already on my screen. If I raise another document (e.g. click on the taskbar), the dialog boxes should remain where they are, and I can use the same dialog boxes for a different document. This does not work now: * when opening different files by launching inkscape by clicking in the file browser ("Nautilus"), the different open files do not share the same dialogs. This is unwanted! * when opening different files by opening the file within inkscape, there is this bug: 1. Open a drawing "A.svg" 2. Open some dialogs (e.g. line style) using "floating" dialogs. 3. Open another drawing "B.svg" by File->Open . The file "B.svg" is raised on top, the dialogs remain (OK) 4. Click on an object in this drawing 5. Now click on the line style dialog. Immediately, "A.svg" raises!! This is unwanted behaviour! Cheers, Roeland.

Cannot open svg files

I am using the latest build on Win XP and every time I preview or try to open an svg file Inkscape crashes with an 'internal error'. If I try and import an svg, Inkscape crashes with no error, it just closes itself. Inkscape and good causes

Hey all, I decided to pass this along as it is in the same basic spirit of open source with the attitude of doing something for a cause greater than one's self (our global community). Recently there was a contest held on DeviantART to promote breast cancer awareness and early prevention that was sponsored by DeviantART, MGM (yes, the studio), and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. With over 1,400 submissions spanning all kinds of art forms imaginable, the Grand Prize Winner chosen was by one of our Inkscapers on DA (and yes she used Inkscape for this), Loraine A. Baird, aka QuicheLoraine. Drawing problem

I want to learn to use Inkscape in conjunction with Scribus to put out a newsletter. I want to create a box to go around a photograph and then import it into Scribus. In Inkscape, I click on the rectangle tool and drag as instructed, and nothing seems to happen. Then I scroll the window, and find that I've drawn a box below the desktop or canvas or whatever it's called. How can I cause the program to draw the box where I click and drag? I uninstalled the program and downloaded and installed it again, but the same thing happens in the second installation. Joe Ward
