Some of you may be familiar with our Inkscape-created webcomic, "The Greys". It's now been adopted by our town council's quarterly magazine, "Aylesbury Town Matters", which goes out to over 29,000 local households. The first appearance of the comic is in the issue that's being delivered this week, and we were fortunate enough to get the space for a short article as well. We made sure to plug Inkscape in the article, and if you want to read it there's a low-res PDF of the page available to download, plus the original comic at our site (though it helps if you're familiar with the architecture of Aylesbury to really appreciate it). Inkscape on Windows 7 pro 64 bit - very slow, unusable.

Hello, I am posting on behalf of a friend who is stuck on Win7 pro (64 bit I think). He installed the latest Inkscape (as of about Jan 2011) and he cannot use it at all. His laptop is pretty powerful with min 2gigs of RAM; hell, it makes my desktop look like a block of wood! It's very slow to draw, to drag around or zoom. There are no advanced filters, or anything complex, being used - even a blank file with a single line in it cannot be edited. I am asking if there are any windows "tips" for using Inkscape? Is there some kind of "XP mode" or some advice re 64bit/32bit or maybe some graphic driver tips? Perhaps there are known clashes with other fancy windows software - like a colour enhancer (he has some kind of thing that makes his colours brighter on his laptop). Anyone have a clue what I could suggest to him? Thanks, \d

Convert to eps in command line without embed or link prompt

Hi all, I'm wondering if is there any command or parameter that I can set on Inkscape to perform a conversion automatically. For example, if you do *inkscape -E image.eps image.jpg*, then a window appears and ask you if you want to embed or link the image. However, I need to do this conversion for a batch of images; and I need an automatic way of setting the option: embed or link. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks, adin

Can't start on Win7

I was using an older version of Inkscape (not sure which one), and couldn't start it: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)." I upgraded to latest version (0.48.0) after an uninstall. I deleted all user preferences too. I am getting the same error. I checked in my AppData/Roaming/inkscape, and all I have in there are empty folders. What do I need to do to get this working?

Importing paths from OneNote to Inkscape via clipboard

Hi, I use Microsoft OneNote to take notes with my tablet, sometimes I need to modify the sketches - and there's no better tool than Inkscape for that. Simply selecting the paths in OneNote and pasting them into Inkscape works as expected. The problem is that the resulting objects have a great number of nodes, so it becomes very difficult to apply any further transformations. Even on a reasonably fast machine, scaling an object takes a while. I made a short video, to illustrate what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOcE7C4_NN8 The workarounds I found are: - press Ctrl+L multiple times to simplify the paths (Inkscape will freeze, but if you're patient - it comes back eventually). Don't be too greedy, if you Simplify multiple times without waiting for Inkscape to update the rendered image - it will crash. - save OneNote's image to a bitmap, then trace the bitmap with Inkscape. This produces objects that have a relatively sane number of nodes, but this operation takes more time and involves the use of other tools- it is not as convenient as copy/pasting. Taking notes directly in Inkscape does not produce good results. There is a delay between the stroke of the pen and the appearance of the stroke on the screen - so I don't see what I'm writing. Apparently, this short-timed lack of feedback is sufficient to make me hate my own handwriting. So, this boils down to 2 questions: 1. can someone suggest a better approach to migrating sketches from OneNote to Inkscape? 2. is there something I can change in my Inkscape habits in order to be able to take notes directly in Inkscape? Illustrator files.

I have a vector file that was originally made in Illustrator. I downloaded it as a zip file. When I unzipped it the file had an .eps suffix. GV can view it. Converted to pdf acrobat reader can view it. Inkscape only gets a black background. Is there a way to manipulate this image in inkscape? divots in bevels

In trying to do a minimal amount of glitz for a button with the beveling filter, it comes out with a bit of a divot. The result is at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11615635/lump.png Something to do with the house/home shape? Any way to cajole it into not doing that?

cutting a sharp hole through a blurred object

I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this, but my inkscape skills aren't too strong. I have a drawing that at the lowest level has an irregular glow. It's a freehand path-based polygon with a heavy blur on it. The blur is all alpha. On top of this is path-based, alpha=1 object; nothing special. I need to knockout an interior region of this to an alpha of zero. It's easy to knockout the alpha=1 object with path difference. However, I can't figure out how to cut a hole in the underlying glow-producing path. It's easy enough to do the path difference, but this actually cuts a hole in the glow-producing path which then blurs into the interior, the part I want to be alpha=0. What I'd like to do is kinda multiply the alpha channel of two paths/groups. The (incorrect) approximation of this is to take the png that I produce at the end and map a particular color to the alpha channel. This doesn't handle the anti-aliased edges correctly. Any suggestions?
