Inkscape 1.4 beta2 =================== Inkscape 1.4 beta2 is now available for testing for all three supported operating systems (Linux, macOS, Windows)! Being a pre-release, this version is not intended for production use, but to help us smooth out any issues that should not show up in the actual release this summer. You can download it from: https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.4beta2/ New Features ------------ When testing, please try out the major upcoming features, such as: * Filter Gallery: it has never been so easy to find the best filter for your needs! This new dialog features previews, categories and search. * Modular grids & improved axonometric grids: set the grid angle by ratio for isometric designs and use modular grids to plan layouts and make icons! * Swatches dialog and palette file handling improved: quick access to dialog layout controls, search for colors, and open different palette file formats! * Unified font browser preview: when activated in the preferences, use it to quickly browse through your font collection. Try it out and give your feedback! * Customizable handles: Power users with CSS knowledge can now customize the styling and basic shape of all the handles! * Fast image clipping with the Shape Builder: raster graphics can now be clipped into multiple sections using the Shape Builder. * There's even more: new templates for folding booklets, a new icon theme, additional options in Ruler and Taper Stroke LPE, preview in Spray tool, many new command line options, updated translations and many bug fixes. If you're a translator, please revise your .po files. * Unified Font Browser updates: The "All fonts" label is now hidden, a new "Font Scaling Factor" slider is added to avoid font clipping. and the settings are now in the Interface > Window category, font filtering works better. * Build fixes: The extensions and lib2geom submodules now point to newer commits to fix build errors, building with Poppler newer than 24.05.0 now works, and the libsoup dependency is removed. * Dash icon theme: A new icon theme is included in this beta release. * PDF export fixes: PDF exports now only contains items visible on the page, and anchor (link) tags now have more accurate click areas. * Help menu update: The Help menu is updated to categorize the links and tutorials better. * New About Screen integrated: The contest winning image by Inkonic is now part of the release. * Other features and bugfixes: A number of UI alignment issues are fixed, some crashes have been fixed, the Export dialog UI has been adjusted for clarity, various page-related bugs have been fixed, the Spray tool is now faster, and several translations have been updated. We've received some excellent entries for the About Screen Contest! Community Voting is open now through April 21 (ends 23:59 UTC)! The topic for this years' contest was "Growth". Right tool for the job?

I'm hoping some experienced Inkscape users can confirm what I'm trying to do is a good fit for Inkscape - or not. I want to create control panels for electronic equipment which will be printed or laser-engraved. Mostly text, but some simple graphics, and svg output is needed, so my first thought was Inkscape was the right tool for the job. The problem I've been trying to overcome is in positioning text and graphics precisely where it needs to be. What I'd like is the to position text and graphic objects by center point and position them at specific X-Y locations on the drawing. For example, say I want to position a 1/4" diameter circle precisely over a hole that is located 2" in the X dimension and 1" in the Y dimension (i.e. XY coordinates 2", 1") from the lower left corner of the panel (which is 0",0"). While I've been able to manually subtract the radius or 1/8" and position my circle at 1.875", .875" - that method is more prone to error, especially when it has to be done dozens or hundreds of times. I've tried grids and guides and snapping but haven't found the combination that puts things exactly where I need them. So my question is, can Inkscape be configured to do what I want to do, and if so, how? I've read the manual and watched tutorials and while but haven't found what I need on my own and thought it would save a lot of time if I'd just explain what I would like in enough detail that more experienced users could offer an opinion. I know that Inkscape is very powerful and does many things well, but if this isn't one of them I'd rather find a tool that does than continue to be frustrated. Thanks in advance, Bob

New user input on tutorials

Hi Inkscape team,I am a new user to Inkscape and I have started working through the tutorials, and I have found that they are a little bit out of date, and give instruction that I think are no longer accurate. Since I have the unique perspective of a first time user, I am willing to propose edits to these tutorials if there was someone I could work with to oversee them so I don't make things worse. I am a recently retired engineer (Electronics/mechanical/manufacturing) so I am familiar with product development cycles and testing. I have also done a fair amount of technical writing. If I could get the tutorial in an editable form, like MS Word, I could do markups and forward to an editor for review and possible updates. ThanksDavid
