Just an absolute newbie running Inkscape 0.48.2 in a well working, really beautiful, vintage declared but loved computer (2.1 GHz PowerPC G5 & Mac OS X.5.8). To get Previews from the Open Clip Art Library*, it is needed to be registered at the openclipart.org site and fill up the user account data in the Inkscape Preferences**? * File > Import from Open Clip... ** Import/Export > Open Clip Art Library Username & Password. Meassure improvements, Speed and Phantom mode

Hi to all. A just commit a new feature in meassure tool, allowing compare two measures, creating greyed version of current meassure in a temporary way. Based in a comment on original code I could improve the response of the tool. Also want to make numeric inputs for start and end point, thinking add it as a modifier for the knots instead puting them on the toolbar. Export areas to a PDF from the command line?

Hi All, I use Inkscape in conjunction with the Sozi extension to create slides, and I'm fairly happy with this setup. However, my student often request the slides in PDF format. Sozi works with me drawing rectangles which are then marked to become individual slides. I have created a home-brewed python script that locates these rectangles, and I then run inkscape -f myslides.svg --export-id=rect_id --export-dpi=300 --export-png=rect_id.png from the command line for each identified rectangle. This gives me a png file for each slide, which I can then join in a PDF that I can distribute to my students. The problem with this approach is that I export each slide to a PNG, which is really sad because then everything is rasterized. I'd much rather export each slide to a PDF, but I cannot seem to make that work from the command line. Does anybody have a trick I can apply? Thanks Søren

"sharing gradients" include stops?

Hi Friends, I'm just working in gradients....well really for the first time since 0.91. And I'm not sure if I'm seeing a problem, or if I just don't understand something. I've searched LP, but I sometimes I don't understand the info in the reports. Plus, my search skills aren't that great either. I have Prevent Sharing Gradients checked in Inkscape Preferences. Steps to reproduce: -- draw a rectangle -- apply flat color -- click F/S dialog > Fill tab > Linear gradient -- switch to Gradient tool -- adjust beginning and ending stops' positions, color and/or opacity -- duplicate the rectangle -- add extra stops to the gradient in the duplicate rectangle -- switch back to Selection tool to move it over and notice that the F/S shows 2 of the same gradient -- switch back to Gradient tool, select the original rectangle and notice that stops were also added to that gradient I've repeated the steps around 10 times. Twice, a 2nd gradient was created. But all the other times, stops were added to the gradient in the original rectangle, and the F/S dialog showed 2 of the same gradient (as if it was shared gradient). I don't know why it works differently sometimes. I'm also not sure if stops being added to the gradient in the original rectangle makes it a "shared definition". I think it does. To me, the moment the rectangle is duplicated, and 2nd gradient should show up in the F/S dialog. I've attached a test file, where I've repeated the steps at least 8 times (although only the result of the last test is showing there) (the other tests were in a different file). Every single time I take the next step, which is to apply a color/opacity to one of the new stops in the gradient in the duplicated rectangle, the seemingly shared gradient splits into 2. So eventually it gets to the correct place. But I think it should get there the moment the object with the gradient is duplicated. Is there some reason why it shouldn't? This is happening on Windows 7, 64-bit; Inkscape 0.91, 32-bit, exe installer. And I'll test in 0.91, 64-bit.... Yes, I have the same result in 64-bit, which was 7z version. I could also test in 0.48.5. Oh, and I just downloaded a dev version for another problem. I'll try there.... Yes, same thing there too, which is Inkscape-14574.7z which 0.91.1, 64-bit for Windows. Is this already reported? Or is there some reason why this is correct behavior? Thank you very much :-) brynn

Inkscape on Mac OSX 10.10.5 with 3 monitors

Hi Everyone, I wonder if I'm the only one with this problem: Inkscape won't run on MacOSX when I use more then one screen! XQuartz starts, but Inkscape doesn't follow. When I ask Mac to show me all windows, the Inkscape screen is among them, but if I click on it, it won't open. It gets even weirder: I also use Fontforge through XQuartz. That works! Now, if I first start FontForge and then Inkscape, I *do* get the see and click on the Inkscape window! Well, that is at least a work around. It would already good to know that I'm not the only one — just a reassurance that I'm maybe not totally crazy :D Thanks beofore hand! Maarten

snap, snap to: center, rotation center of groups

Hi Friends, Are we supposed to be able to snap, or snap to, the center or rotation center of groups? I can't seem to make it happen. I can snap to the centers of individual objects in the group, but not the center of the group. I tend to think of a group as a type of object. But maybe not? Thanks for any clarification :-) brynn

next/previous zoom survives closing/reopening file

Hi Friends, Yes, another weird question :-p. I've noticed that next/previous zoom survives after closing and reopening a file. To my simple way of thinking, next/previous zoom is similar to Undo/Redo. In both cases, Inkscape "remembers" what came before and what happened next. Why can't Undo/Redo survive closing and reopening the file? Wouldn't that be awesome?! Could someone give a simple, or very generalized explanation why Undo/Redo can't survive closing the file, but Next/Previous Zoom does? Thank you very much :-) brynn

question on merging PDF files

I'm using a laser engraver (at TechShop) to generate some tactile maps for a blind friend. The procedure is roughly as follows: - SketchUp - generate a 2D model - print views as PDF files - Illustrator - merge files into layers - engrave Layer 1 (raster) - cut out Layer 2 (vector) Although this works, I'd like to get away from Illustrator. TechShop has Inkscape loaded on the PC that runs the engraver and I think I should be able to do the merging in Inkscape, as well. However, I've never used Inkscape, so I'm clueless about how to approach the problem. If you think you can help, please send me a note (off-list) with your suggestions. can't join nodes in this file

Hi Friends, Attached is a file where I'm having a problem joining nodes. To the right of the large hexagon shape is a smaller hexagon made of disconnected segments. There I've snapped numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 to some nodes, so you know which ones I'm trying to join. I want to join nodes 1 and 2 with a new segment, and likewise, 3 and 4. But I can't seem to join them at all, in any way. None of the nodes of those segments will join to each other. I have no idea what the problem might be. If I draw new segments, they can be joined. But it would be nice if I didn't have to draw them again. (Although that's likely going to be my solution.) Most importantly, is it fixable? But 2nd, why, what's wrong with them? Thanks for your help, brynn PS -- Interesting....I had the thought to try Object to Path on them, in case they somehow aren't being recognized as paths. But what they aren't being recognized as, is objects! The status bar says "No objects to convert to path in the selection". That's a new one for me! They are a product of a path operation....difference, iirc. But that's never caused this problem for me, in the past. Anyway, TA :-)

guides by layer? or guide profiles?

Hi Friends, Would it be possible to have guides by layers? I mean, so that when you hide a layer, the guides for that layer are hidden. And a different layer can have different guides? Since layers are just special groups, I'm guessing it would not be possible. Because guides are a document property, they're made to be displayed across both groups and layers. I'm often wishing I could have distinct sets of guides. For example, on one layer, I have a large star or circle, with guides set up that center on the star or circle . So it's a set of radial guides. But on another layer, I might need guides in a rectangular arrangement. Without any way to have distinct sets of guides, when I make my guides visible, sometimes it's almost like a nightmare! For example, see attached a screenshot of a file I've been working on. And that's one of the more manageable files, as far as guides. (yes, I changed them to red) So I wonder if there could be such a thing as "guide profiles" or "guide sets".....that could be individually hidden or visible. (not that I could actually write an extension, but I might request one, if it's possible). Thanks for comments, brynn
